Deepika to essay role of Laxmi, an acid attack survivor in her next movie

Sizzling diva and Padmavat actress Deepika Padukone is to play the role of Laxmi Agarwal, an acid attack survivor, in her next movie. Meghna Gulzar is the director of the film.

Deepika was last seen in Sanjay Leela Bansali's Padmavat. Meghna Gulzar, the director of the film says that she chose Deepika for the film as she fits into the role physically as well. She chose this theme for the story as she wanted to spread awareness for the subject in the society.

Meghna said to Mirror in an interview: “Using Laxmi’s story as a lens, we are attempting to explore these aspects and the consequences of acid-related violence in our society. This’s what makes this must-told story relevant. Awareness is the first step towards change.”

In an interview Deepika said to Mirror: “When I heard this story, I was deeply moved as it’s not just one of violence but of strength and courage, hope and victory. It made such an impact on me, that personally and creatively, I needed to go beyond and so the decision to turn producer.”

The plot revolves around an overwhelming story of Laxmi who unfortunately turned a victim of an acid attack at the age of 15. The culprits could burn her face and not her dreams. The girl summoned all her courage to lend her hand to acid attack survivors and leads a campaign to spread awareness for the same.
She was also honoured with the US State Department’s International Women of Courage Award in 2014 from the former First Lady of the United States, Michelle Obama.
