There have been several conspiracy theories about the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation funding the Pirbright Institute. The foundation has provided two grants to Pirbright in 2013 and in 2016, for the development of a universal flu vaccine, to combat the effects of farm animals and viruses that have the potential to spread to humans. But it denied funding the development of Pirbright’s coronavirus vaccine for livestock.

In October 2019, just months ahead of the COVID-19 outbreak, Jhon Hopkins Centre for Health and Security, in collaboration with the World Economic Forum and the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation, organised a simulation called Event 201, which modelled an outbreak of a novel zoonotic coronavirus, transmitted from bats to pigs to people. Just months ahead of the COVID-19 pandemic in September 2019, the Gates Foundation bought a position in BioNTech. It invested $55 million in the biotech, with the potential for total funding to reach $100 million. BioNTech, along with Pfizer, became the first organisation to develop an mRNA vaccine for COVID-19.

The mail doesn't implicate any wrongdoing, but it adds to the pile of circumstantial evidence through its timing and participants that fuels conspiracy theories.

Social causes on Kyunki Saas Bhi Kabhi Bahu Thi

Not just on screen but off screen to,o Smriti Irani has been actively creating awareness about various social issues related to women. Recently, she walked the ramp at the Bombay Times Fashion Week. The actor, in a recent interview with Mumbai Mirror, said, "I've always believed that a saree is never limiting for a woman. It's graceful, carries a piece of our history, and exudes dignity. It doesn't confine a woman to a particular size or body type."

The show also addresses the body image issues that women in the country face.

"We took up the issue of ageing and body shaming because these are fundamental challenges women deal with every day. For me, as someone who has been part of the creative industry, it was important to highlight them. When we did Kyunki, we did not only address issues of body shaming and ageing, but also dealt with challenges that men face," the actor said.

For instance, if a false case is filed, can women stand up for such men? That is not something you would normally expect in a television show or film, as people often say we are not progressive enough. The fact that such progressive elements are now accepted not only on TV but also on OTT platforms speaks volumes. We have truly entered an era of fearlessness," Smriti added.

Kyunki Saas Bhi Kabhi Bahu Thi 2 airs on Star Plus at 10:30 pm.

Elon Musk was not at Donald Trump’s high-stakes White House tech dinner — but was it a snub or a skip? As Trump hosted Big Tech titans like Zuckerberg, Gates, Altman, Cook, and Pichai, speculation swirled around Musk’s absence. Meanwhile, a hot mic moment from Zuckerberg, Gates praising Warp Speed, and Google’s antitrust relief made headlines. Melania even declared, “Our future is no longer sci-fi — robots are here.” Was this dinner a political masterclass or a corporate power shuffle?

Bill Gates is backing a butter made up entirely from carbon, hydrogen and oxygen and facing backlash for it. The butter has been scientifically made in a lab without any milk products. A company named Savor, based in Batavia, Illinois, is behind the strange blend. It is generating online buzz for all the wrong reasons. People are slamming the artificial butter, asking why one would mix hydrogen, carbon and oxygen to create fat molecules and then add flavour and colour to make it taste like butter? The product is currently being tested at restaurants and is expected to be offered for sale in 2027. Savor described the butter as "Delightfully rich foods without animals, farmland, fertilisers, hormones, or antibiotics. These are real fats, not a substitute." Gates is promoting the butter for its potential to cut down on greenhouse gas emissions. Manufacturing this butter requires "zero agriculture" and causes "zero emissions." The company claims the butter looks, smells and tastes just like the real thing, with no palm oil. They are combining hydrogen, carbon and oxygen to create fat molecules, then manipulating that to taste like butter. Why do this when we already have butter?" Another person wrote that Savor doesn't seem to be solving a problem, but is undertaking a practice that would monopolise food production. However, artificial food items can have disastrous health effects. Health experts even pan margarine, a butter substitute made from vegetable oils.

A synthetic butter made by combining hydrogen, carbon and oxygen in a lab has raised eyebrows in the United States. Bill Gates is backing the product. He says it can cut down greenhouse gas emissions. However, the company has not mentioned anything about the effects of such butter on health.

The billionaire wrote in his blog, 'The idea of switching to lab-made fats and oils may seem strange at first. But their potential to significantly reduce our carbon footprint is immense." However, no one seems to be buying it. Celebrity chef Andrew Gruel wrote on X, "Disgusting. They are combining hydrogen, carbon and oxygen to create fat molecules, then manipulating that to taste like butter. Why do this when we already have butter?" Another person wrote that Savor doesn't seem to be solving a problem, but is undertaking a practice that would monopolise food production. Also Read: Who is winning the brain chip war? Not Musk, but a company backed by Jeff Bezos and Bill Gates "They're not trying to solve a food shortage. They're trying to engineer one… Once they own the source code for your food, they can alter it, gate it, and revoke access at will… The goal isn't to make butter without cows. The goal is to make humans without sovereignty," a user wrote, criticising the synthetic butter. Others think that it could feed poor countries if it is cheaper to produce.

However, the company hasn't mentioned anything about the effects of such butter on health.

Strained Ties with India

Pakistan’s bilateral trade with India has sharply declined, falling from USD 3 billion in 2018 to just USD 1.2 billion by 2024. Critical imports, including essential medicines, now face costly delays as they are rerouted through third countries due to strained diplomatic relations. The downturn in trade has further dampened investor confidence, with geopolitical tensions exacerbating an already fragile economic environment.

Former President Links Exit to Regime Change

Former Pakistani President Arif Alvi reacted strongly to the news, calling Microsoft’s decision “a troubling sign for our economic future.” In a detailed post on X (formerly Twitter), Alvi stated, “Pakistan now spirals in a whirlpool of uncertainty. There is increasing joblessness, our talent is migrating abroad, purchasing power has reduced, economic recovery in the ‘awami’ context feels like a distant & elusive dream.”

Alvi also recalled his February 2022 meeting with Microsoft co-founder Bill Gates, where they discussed potential investment in Pakistan. “I asked him directly, ‘Why isn’t Microsoft investing in Pakistan?’ He leaned in, sharing in confidence that he had just spoken with PM Imran Khan and arranged a call between the PM and Microsoft CEO Satya Nadella.” According to Alvi, Gates said a major announcement was planned within two months. However, “everything went rapidly downhill. Regime change upended those plans.”

Economic Indicators Reflect a Tough Climate

Microsoft’s exit comes at a time when Pakistan’s economy is under severe strain. The trade deficit for FY2024 reached USD 24.4 billion, while foreign exchange reserves fell to just USD 11.5 billion by mid-2025, directly impacting tech imports and investor sentiment.

Alvi argued that political dialogue is now essential. “Public opinion, as many know, reflects deep disillusionment with the current arrangement & the electoral process. Yet, a vast majority still believes that dialogue is the only way to navigate this crisis,” he said.

Microsoft’s departure marks a significant moment for Pakistan’s tech ecosystem and reflects broader concerns over its economic direction.
