The contest turned down the clock from 2005 when Australia had narrowly lost the Edgbaston contest by two runs in another thriller. The defeat for the hosts was also their third since Ben Stokes took over the reins in June 2022.

Match referee Andy Pycroft, after the match, which Australia won by two wickets, reprimanded both teams. As per the International Cricket Council (ICC) rules, players get docked 20 per cent of their match fee for each over short. The teams were found two overs short after considering the allowance time to complete the overs.

After taking the docked points into account, England stand at minus two while Australia stand at 10 after getting 12 points for their win in the current WTC cycle.&nbsp;

While England's Bazball approach entertained one and all throughout the contest and kept viewers at the edge of their seat, English captain Ben Stokes' first-innings declaration became a talking point after they went down by two wickets on Tuesday evening. While one can point fingers at England's declaration, they did miss a chance to not dismiss Australia early in their first essay after reducing them to 220 for 5. Also, England should have ideally set a target beyond 300 but Cummins & Co. did well to dismiss them for 273. <h2>Bairstow not surprised by Stokes’ decision</h2>

"I'm sure there are many decisions that Ben has made that have probably taken commentators and some people by surprise. It was no surprise to us. You'll all be aware that a 20-minute slot for any opening pair is something that's not very nice and can be a bit niggly," Bairstow said.

While the decision came as a surprise to many, England continued to impress despite a poor second session where they lost Harry Brook and skipper Stokes in no time.

"It was a decision that Ben and Brendon [McCullum] made in conjunction with the bowlers. It's a shot to nothing, isn't it? You can walk off and there might be an unbelievable ball in there - there might be a loose shot or whatever.

"But we'll come back tomorrow with a ball that's four overs old, a fresh bowling attack and a team that are really looking forward to the challenge."

With England at 124/3 at the break, it was Joe Root who took the anchor role despite losing wickets consistently at the other end. Harry Brook (32) and skipper Ben Stokes (1) soon followed which put the hosts on the back foot. Bairstow (78) would then join Root as they stitched a 121-run stand for the sixth wicket. Root scored his 30th Test hundred and remained unbeaten on 118 at the end of the day.

England did their best to breach the defence of Warner and Khawaja but did not succeed in the four overs at the end of Day 1 before stumps. Australia ended the day at 14/0 and still trail by 379 runs in the first innings.

The joy was short-lived as the Baggy Greens then made a good comeback as returning Josh Hazlewood was on the money after he scalped Ben Duckett (12) on the fourth ball of the fourth over. Crawley then partnered Ollie Pope for the next hour and so as he brought up his ninth Test fifty in the 19th over. His 61-run innings came to an end on the last ball of the first session as England ended at 125/3 after 27.1 overs.

Crawley along with Pope stitched a partnership of 70 runs for the second wicket as they gave the Aussies a hard time before their mini comeback.

<h2>England look for redemption</h2>

Having lost the Ashes 0-4 Down Under in 2021-22, England will be out for redemption as they try to get the better of the Aussies. England have not won the Ashes since 2-15 and will to end their drought of the Ashes, where they also won the ODI and the T20 World Cup. They will have history on their side as the Ashes has not been won by a host nation for more than a decade.

The last time the Ashes was won by an away team was in 2011 while the last time Australia won the Ashes on English soil was in 2001. Currently, England are also enjoying a purple patch of form having won 11 matches in their last 13 matches under the captaincy of Ben Stokes, who took over as the skipper in June 2022.&nbsp;

<h2>Stokes declares himself fit</h2>

"The last three days have been really good for my confidence," Stokes said at his pre-match press conference.

"I've bowled every day so far and been able to run in with more intensity day by day. I've got myself in a real good place to be able to bowl."

England are in the final stage of their preparations for the Ashes which has seen big names return to side in the form of Ollie Robinson and James Anderson. The duo missed the only Test match against Ireland at the start of the month but will now take their place in the team. While Stokes could still bowl, the management will make sure he is not over-utilised as there are four more Test matches still to be played in the Ashes.

"David Saker has come in and mentioned something to me last week in Scotland, saying, 'If you're still bowling by the fourth or fifth Test, we've done something right.'

"I definitely feel in a better place than I did in Wellington and even before that. Obviously every time I am out on the field, that [bowling an important spell] is what I want to do, but my body was stopping me from doing that,” added Stokes.

<h2>Stokes ready for impact?</h2>

Stokes has been consistently struggling with injuries which saw him miss the majority of the Indian Premier League (IPL) season. He left the IPL camp of Championship winning side Chennai Super Kings (CSK) early to prepare for the Ashes. Interestingly despite playing in the only Test against Ireland, he did not had to stretch his muscle and ended up winning the contest without batting bowling, or keeping gloves.

On the flip side, England have started playing mind games as they announced their Playing XI for the first Test on Wednesday, June 14. Moeen Ali and Stuart Broad both have been included in the team while Mark Wood has missed out on a place in the Playing XI.

The all-rounder, however, has admitted that he wouldn't have done so if Ben Stokes and Brendon McCullum were not the captain and coach of the England Test team.

"Probably not, no," said Moeen in response to the question when asked if he would have considered picking up the red ball again, had it not been Stokes who had asked him, reported cricket news website ESPNCricinfo.

Ali also revealed that he thought it was a joke when Stokes first asked him to play in the Ashes and he had replied with a 'lol.' Ali, however, wasn't aware of Leach's diagnosis at the time, said the report.

"Just the fact that it's the Ashes and it's such a big series and the exciting cricket the guys have been playing," Moeen explained. "It's a kind of era I'd have loved when I was playing. It's the Ashes: to be part of it would be amazing.

"When I retired, I was done and that was the end of playing. But the unfortunate injury to Leachy meant I got a message and a call from Stokesy and Baz and Keysy (Rob Key). So let's see what happens," added Ali.

Moeen, however, made it clear that he doesn't look at this comeback as a career and more like a free hit where he's not playing for his spot.

"I don't look at it like a Test career. It is a free hit. I'm not playing for my spot. There's no pressure, really. There is pressure of the occasion and the game, but I spoke to Baz and he said he's not bothered about how I perform, which is quite nice.

"As an individual, I want to do well and contribute to winning games. All the things I ever wanted to do in Test cricket I'm going to try to do in these games. It could be dangerous, it could be not so dangerous. We'll see," said Ali.

The all-rounder also elaborated on how Stokes has told him to be just himself and be on the aggressive side with the ball as well.

"I spoke to Stokesy about how he talked to batters and he just said, 'It would be perfect for you and the way you play'. "It is exciting, but to me, the jury is out at the moment. Does [Bazball] hold up under scrutiny against a really good bowling attack in maybe challenging conditions?” Waugh added. Ponting echoes Waugh’s words Two great Australian captains, Waugh and Ricky Ponting, share the same thought as both believe England might win most matches with that approach, they will still fall short on a few occasions, and chances of that happening against the Aussies are higher. "There is no doubt it won't work all the time, but I think with [coach Brendon] McCullum and [captain Ben] Stokes they will have the courage to go through with it," Waugh said. "They can't chop and change. Have they got a backup plan? I'm not sure. That might find them out." Meanwhile, Ponting said, "I've got a few thoughts on what I'd be doing if I was an Australian fast bowler," Ponting said. "I think the reason the way England have played for the last couple of years is with this series in mind. The swashbuckling all-rounder has led England to 11 wins from 13 Tests since being appointed captain alongside coach Brendon McCullum last year.

Next week the skipper, who starred in the drawn 2109 Ashes series, will lead his men in the first Test against arch-rivals Australia at Edgbaston.

England have achieved their recent striking success playing an aggressive style of cricket dubbed "Bazball" in reference to McCullum's nickname.

Doubts persist over whether such an approach can succeed against Australia but Stokes is determined to produce a memorable series that can be compared with the 1981 and 2005 Ashes contests, which made all-rounders Ian Botham and Andrew Flintoff huge stars.

"I've seen what it's like when you get those moments that really ignite an audience and even create something that goes beyond cricket," Stokes wrote in a column for the Players' Tribune.

"Flintoff in 05, Beefy (Botham) in 81 -- magical events that capture the public imagination and show what cricket can be all about.

"Moments that even people who aren't normally into cricket stick on the telly for because it's so exciting and you feel like you're part of something that you may never get to see again."

Stokes, who has won the 50-over World Cup and Twenty20 World Cup, reiterated his desire for the Test side to play without fear, even though he stressed his hatred of defeat.

"Just because I say it's all right to fail, it doesn't mean I'm fine with losing," he said. "I hate&nbsp;losing.&nbsp;

"But there's a bigger picture. You have to understand that the only&nbsp;way you ever succeed is by having that liberty to really give it a proper go."

The global growth of T20 franchise leagues, which offer players the chance to earn huge sums of money in much less time than when on international duty, has left many fans fearing for the future of five-day Test cricket.

"I really want boards across the world to get their heads around this, which they seem to be having a hard time doing.&nbsp;

"Rather than fight against it, we need to embrace it. Yes, we may lose a few talented players along the way, but the best way to keep Test cricket alive and at the pinnacle of the sport is to work harder to show players something that excites them and inspires them."

England Test captain Ben Stokes has assured fans that there's nothing to worry about regarding his knee and he fully plans to bowl in the upcoming Ashes series against Australia at home. Stokes's left knee has been a topic of discussions as the all-rounder has had to manage it for years and his recent catch in the one-off Test against Ireland put him in a bit of pain.

Speaking on the catch which he took at short fine leg to dismiss Ireland's Curtis Campher, Stokes, at the post-match presentation, said, "I actually didn't pick it (ball) up, and I actually landed quite awkwardly on it (knee). My weight went on the inside of my knee, like I hyper-extended."

The English captain was in discomfort after the catch and didn't bowl in the match, which England won by 10 wickets. He, however, had bowled before the start of play on day 3 and said he was 'happy with where I was.'

"I bowled this morning - the first time I'd bowled since being back from India, so it would have been about four weeks actually," said Stokes. "I got through that and was really happy with where I was. So no, nothing (for England fans) to worry about."

Stokes further elaborated after the match, "I was really happy with how I bowled (before play). I bowled for about 20 minutes and I got through that really well. Obviously I have got time to build up before I push back into flat out, but I just landed quite awkwardly when I took that catch."

While the knee certainly has been a pain point for Stokes, he said that his discomfort after the catch was more of because of age and he twisted it in a strange way.

"I didn't quite see it so had to adjust myself and landed on my left leg and it twisted in a really strange way. It was fine, I just don't know what really happened. It was one of those things - but I am 32 tomorrow so that probably explains it," added the English skipper.

Stokes was also asked whether he'd sit out at any point during the course of the Ashes if he'd not able to bowl to which replied in a firm no.

"No, of course not. That's not even something we've even spoken about because I'm fully prepared to be bowling at Edgbaston," reassured the ace all-rounder. The iconic five-Test series between England and Australia is set to start from June 16.

"We've been very clear with the ground-staff around England about what type of wickets we want and they've been very responsive to us, which is good," Stokes said on Sky Sports on Tuesday.

Stokes has spoken frequently of his willingness to lose in pursuit of victory.
