Given the board is conscious of making a rational decision here, they are also keen to avoid getting into an uncomfortable situation with their neighbouring boards &ndash; BCCI and PCB.

We don't want to change the person; rather, we want to change the system so that whoever comes in by following that system, corruption cannot come in, and we want to take steps so that we can make a permanent solution,” Mahmud added.

After months of discussions and observations following the 2023 World Cup debacle, the Bangladesh Cricket Board (BCB) named Najmul Hossain Shanto as the new captain in all three formats. Contrary to what the narrative was in the media as to why veteran Bangladesh batter Tamim Iqbal got dropped from the World Cup squad, with BCB officials claiming back injury to be the reason, Tamim, in his latest video uploaded on his Facebook page, revealed what went behind the scene, prompting him to request the selectors to drop him in the first place.

Though Tamim admits to feeling discomfort in his troubled back despite returning to the side for the New Zealand series (having played only one ODI – 2nd game), the left-handed batter revealed following a closed-door discussion with one of the top BCB officials that things fell apart between them.

Tamim said the official informed him that they were thinking of taking him to the World Cup (even knowing about his fitness) and asked him to play while managing his injury and workload. Tamim added the official said should he get picked in the first place, the Bangladesh batter should either sit out of the opener against Afghanistan or bat in the middle order, something he has never done on the international stage.

"A top-level official of the board who is involved with our cricket called me and told me that you will go to World Cup and we have to make you play by managing [your fitness]," Tamim said in the video posted on his Facebook page.

“He said, 'do one thing, you don't play the opening game against Afghanistan'. I told him, look there are still 10 to 12 days and in 12-13 days I will be in a good state so why I should not be playing? Then he said, 'If you play, we are planning to send you down the order.'”

"You have to understand I'm coming from which mindset. I played a good innings after a while (against New Zealand), and I was happy about it. But all of a sudden these kinds of words were not something that I could take," Tamim added.

Tamim said he expressed displeasure over this thought process, which made him uncomfortable on many grounds. The unclarity in the scheme of things in the lead-up to the World Cup caused unrest during the conversation, after which Tamim requested all parties concerned to keep him out of the World Cup.&nbsp;

"I am playing in the same position for the last 17 years and, I never batted at three or four. If I was batting at three or four and later my batting position was changed up and down, in that case, it could be adjusted. But I don't have any experience batting at three and four position. Certainly, I did not take it well. I was feeling that I am forced in a lot of areas willingly, like it is going well let's do something new [to irritate him]. That is what I was feeling."

Tamim is said to have conveyed his decision to step down as an ODI captain to Bangladesh Prime Minister on Thursday, following which he had extended discussions with BCB president Nazmul Hassan and cricket operations chairman Jalal Yunus at Hassan's residence.

In his statement, Tamim revealed his back injury forced him to take the call at this crucial juncture, adding he is available to deliver as the player whenever the team needs him but cannot commit on leading the side given the uncertain nature of his recurring injury.

"I believe injury is an issue. I took an injection [on July 28], but it is like a hit or miss. I have told them [the board] about the problem. I have always helped the team over everything else. So keeping that in mind, stepping down is the best possible decision. I want to give my best as a player whenever the opportunity comes. I have spoken to the prime minister, and she understood," Tamim said.

<h2>‘His call (to step down) came as a shock’</h2>

Speaking on Tamim’s decision, Jalal said it came as shock for all, but understanding the reality surrounding it, Jalal revealed Tamim will undergo rehabilitation during the Asia Cup and aim for a comeback for New Zealand series and the World Cup in October-November.

"He (Tamim) has been suffering from an injury in his L4 and L5 in his back," Jalal said.

"Tamim has been in treatment for almost a year. He went abroad, consulted several doctors. Recently, he consulted a doctor in London.

"The diagnosis was that his pain is generating from L4 and L5 discs. He was given two injections. The second injection, given on July 28, relieved him of pain. He has been advised to rest for two weeks, till August 11, after which he will resume his rehab. But he can only return to the nets in another two weeks. By that time, we are leaving for Asia Cup, on August 26.

"If he undergoes surgery, returning [soon] will be very difficult. He is unlikely to do that, so we are expecting him to return for the New Zealand series,” Jalal added. 
 
Tamim also echoed the exact words, saying, “I want to play the New Zealand series in the best possible shape. We could have rushed it for the Asia Cup, but we are opting against it. I am very hopeful that I will be available for the World Cup."

Bangladesh pacer Shohidul Islam has been suspended for 10 months after pleading guilty to breaching Article 2.1 of the ICC Anti-Doping CodeThe 27-year-old pacer has represented Bangladesh in one T20I. After admitting the offence, Shohidul has been suspended from all forms of cricket for 10 months. The 10-month suspension has been backdated to May 28, the day he admitted to the offence, meaning the Bangladesh pacer will be eligible to play on 28 March 2023.

Shohidul has played a solitary T20I for Bangladesh, where he picked up the wicket of Mohammad Rizwan in the third and final match of the series which Pakistan won 3-0. He has been part of Bangladesh`s travelling squads for series against New Zealand and South Africa but did not get any game time. He was also a part of the Bangladesh Test and T20I squad for the ongoing tour of the West Indies but missed out due to a side strain. Shohidul`s urine sample was positive for Clomifene, which is classified as a Specified Substance under WADA`s Prohibited List. It is prohibited both in-competition as well as out-of-competition.

Shohidul had provided the urine sample as a part of ICC`s out-of-competition testing programme. While handing out the suspension, the ICC confirmed that Shohidul had inadvertently ingested the prohibited substance in the form of medicine that he had been legitimately prescribed for therapeutic purposes. Shohidul also testified that he had no intention to use the prohibited substance for performance enhancement.

Bangladesh pacer Shohidul Islam has been suspended for 10 months after pleading guilty to breaching Article 2.1 of the ICC Anti-Doping CodeThe 27-year-old pacer has represented Bangladesh in one T20I. After admitting the offence, Shohidul has been suspended from all forms of cricket for 10 months. The 10-month suspension has been backdated to May 28, the day he admitted to the offence, meaning the Bangladesh pacer will be eligible to play on 28 March 2023. Shohidul has played a solitary T20I for Bangladesh, where he picked up the wicket of Mohammad Rizwan in the third and final match of the series which Pakistan won 3-0. He has been part of Bangladesh`s travelling squads for series against New Zealand and South Africa but did not get any game time. He was also a part of the Bangladesh Test and T20I squad for the ongoing tour of the West Indies but missed out due to a side strain. Shohidul`s urine sample was positive for Clomifene, which is classified as a Specified Substance under WADA`s Prohibited List. It is prohibited both in-competition as well as out-of-competition. Shohidul had provided the urine sample as a part of ICC`s out-of-competition testing programme. While handing out the suspension, the ICC confirmed that Shohidul had inadvertently ingested the prohibited substance in the form of medicine that he had been legitimately prescribed for therapeutic purposes. Shohidul also testified that he had no intention to use the prohibited substance for performance enhancement.
