Australian Senator Lidia Thorpe has claimed that she was sexually assaulted in the Parliament house by fellow senator David Van, who has denied the allegations. Thorpe also added that the building was "not a safe place" for women to work.

The Australian government will cancel a lease held by the Russian Federation for its second embassy in the country right next to the Parliament House. Prime Minister Anthony Albanese said Thursday morning that the lease would be cancelled due to national security concerns, and a bill has been introduced in&nbsp;the parliament regarding the same. The bill reportedly has bipartisan support, and the prime minister expects it to pass both chambers of the parliament in a day itself.

“Today, the government will introduce legislation to terminate the Russian Federation's lease for a proposed diplomatic presence just next to Parliament House. We anticipate this legislation will pass both the House of Representatives and the Senate this morning," Albanese was quoted as saying by the Australian media.

"We're acting quickly to ensure the leased site does not become a formal diplomatic presence," the prime minister added.

<h2>Why the bill has been introduced?</h2>

The bill has been introduced in an effort to circumvent a recent Federal Court ruling that declared an eviction order by the National Capital Authority unlawful, thus paving the way for Russia to erect a sovereign structure in the close vicinity of the Parliament House.&nbsp;

The decision to introduce the bill was made during a meeting of the government's national security committee at the end of last month, and Home Affairs Minister Clare O'Neil is set to present it today to enforce the cancellation of the lease.&nbsp;

According to Albanese, this action is deemed crucial to safeguard Australia's national security interests, an aspect that the government takes seriously. Minister O'Neil echoed this sentiment in parliament, stating that the lease termination would not have any impact on the existing Russian embassy in the Australian Capital Territory (ACT). "This action is absolutely necessary to protect Australia's national security interests — something that this parliament and our government will never shy away from," Ms O'Neil told the parliament.

<h2>Bill expected to pass both chambers of parliament</h2>

Remarkably, the bill was swiftly introduced and passed through the House of Representatives in just four and a half minutes. However, it still requires approval from the Senate to become law. Shadow Defence Minister Andrew Hastie expressed his support for the bill, emphasising the potential risk it poses to national interests based on security advice.

Australia introduces bill to kill Russia’s plans of building embassy right next to parliament

At least 10 people died and 25 were injured after a chartered bus carrying wedding guests rolled off a ramp at a roundabout in the Hunter region in Australia's New South Wales (NSW) state, police said on Monday.

10 dead, 25 injured as bus carrying wedding guests rolls over in Australian wine region

A wedding party bus crashed in the Hunter wine region north of Sydney, Australia in which 10 people were killed. The police on Monday said that after the fatal accident, the 58-year-old driver was arrested.

In the images shown on television, the light-coloured coach appeared laying on its side after it overturned late Sunday night. The bus was carrying guests from a wedding at a local winery.

A dozen emergency workers, donning high visibility yellow vests, reached the site of the accident and the coloured lights of their vehicles flashed in the foggy night. The death toll may increase as 25 people were rushed to hospital, in which two of them were airlifted by helicopter from the crash site, stated Acting Assistant Commissioner Tracy Chapman.

The bus remains to be righted and the deceased are still inside, she stated, hinting at the possibility of some people being trapped underneath. She added that the police are not aware of the involvement of any children.

<h2>Driver arrested</h2>

The coach driver had to go through mandatory testing at the hospital before he was held at a police station in nearby Cessnock, said the police officer while speaking to reporters at the scene.

"He's under arrest. He's been the driver of a motor vehicle collision where there have been fatal injuries and there will be charges pending," she added.&nbsp;

Police said&nbsp;that the 58-year-old man has been charged with 10 offences related to dangerous or negligent driving "occasioning death". The driver was denied bail ahead of a court hearing at nearby Cessnock on Tuesday.&nbsp;

The passengers had participated in a wedding together, stated the officer, and were probably heading to their accommodation post festivities. “No other vehicle appeared to have been involved in the crash,” she stated.

<h2>'Cruel and sad'</h2>

Australian Prime Minister Anthony Albanese stated that weddings are supposed to be the happiest of times for family and friends.

"For a joyous day like that in a beautiful place to end with such terrible loss of life and injury is so cruel and sad, and so unfair," he stated in Canberra.

"People hire a bus for weddings in order to keep their guests safe, and that just adds to the unimaginable nature of this tragedy," the prime minister added.

Australia: Ten killed in wedding bus crash, driver charged with 10 counts of dangerous driving

Australia skipper Pat Cummins isn't willing to pick out which ICC trophy he likes the most - the 2015 ODI WC, T20 WC in 2021 or the WTC Final 2023. "It's probably like trying to pick your favourite kid," he said in response to the question after winning the WTC Final against India.

The skipper, who became one of the four players in history to win all the ICC trophies along with Steve Smith, David Warner and Mitchell Starc, was sure that Test cricket is the pinnacle for them.

"They all feel a little bit different," said Cummins about the trophies. "We were just talking about that. No doubt Test matches for us are our favourite format. It's the biggest challenge I think in every way. This competition pitting up against everyone in the world, it has got to be right up there," he added.

The skipper also praised his team for having won everywhere in the world including an away victory each in Pakistan, India and Sri Lanka.

"I think that's one of the most satisfying bits," he said. "Obviously the win here, but to make it to the final, you have got to win everywhere in the world. I think this cycle was 20 Test matches. I think we might have only lost three or four out of the 20. The boys were fantastic the whole way through. We adapted well and that's what makes it so satisfying," Cummins added further.&nbsp;

With Australia set to face England in five days' time for the iconic Ashes Test series, Cummins said they are going to savour this victory for a bit before they move on the next series.

"It's been an amazing two years," he said. "We've had this final in the diary for a while. It's been something that we had been building up for, so it is something we are going to savour. I know we have got a big series but we can worry about that in a couple of days' time.

"You only get a few of these moments in your career where you can sit back, acknowledge a pretty special achievement and that's one of these times," said Cummins.

WTC Final: Australia skipper Pat Cummins opens up on 'pretty special achievement'

Australia's most-read&nbsp;newspaper&nbsp;apologised for its coverage of a massacre two centuries ago in which it campaigned against prosecuting colonists who slaughtered dozens of Indigenous people, saying "truth is an essential force for reconciliation".

Though&nbsp;Australia's history since European arrival in 1788 is replete with colonial violence against the original inhabitants, the Myall Creek massacre of June 10, 1838, is seen as a turning point because of its brutality and the fact it sparked the first criminal charges for settler violence against First Nations people.

About 28 sheltering Indigenous women, children and elderly men were decapitated with swords or stomped to death by horses, their bodies later burned, while one woman was kept to be raped over the following days, according to historians.

But the Sydney Morning Herald, in an editorial posted at the top of its website on Friday, said it had "failed dismally" at the time by publishing articles calling for the attackers to be spared prosecution and, once found guilty, spared the death penalty.

"Today's generation is not responsible for the sins of earlier ones, yet we can help heal old harms nonetheless," the Nine Entertainment-owned paper said. "The capacity to recognise a past wrong is a sign of a strong future."

The unusual editorial reflects a mood of atonement that is building in&nbsp;Australia&nbsp;as the government plans a referendum, expected between October and December, on whether to change the constitution to include an Indigenous advisory body to parliament.

Most polls suggest the country will vote in favour of the change, although the lead is narrowing as opponents, including the federal opposition, warn it would divide&nbsp;Australians.

The Herald, which gets the most website visits of any&nbsp;Australian news outlet, according to industry data, invoked the referendum in its editorial to mark the 185th anniversary of the massacre for which seven people were ultimately found guilty of murder and hanged.

"As&nbsp;Australia&nbsp;prepares for a referendum on constitutional recognition for Indigenous&nbsp; Australians later this year, the nation is thinking deeply about what reconciliation looks like in 2023," it said. "So too is the Herald."

Australia on Thursday announced that a national ban will be imposed on Nazi symbols as part of their attempt to crack down on far-right groups.

Due to the ban on Nazi symbols, people held guilty of publicly displaying SS symbols or the swastika will be punished with up to a year in prison.

The new laws, however, will not cover the Nazi salute. In many states, Nazi symbols have already been banned but the new rule means they won't be permitted anywhere, said the government.

The step was taken in the wake of a resurgence in far-right activity.

In March, a bunch of neo-Nazis participated in a rally in Melbourne which was hosted by Kellie-Jay Keen-Minshull, who is well-known for strongly opposing transgender rights and performed Nazi salutes on the Victorian Parliament's steps.

Keen-Minshull denied having any connection to the group. The event led to a political backlash with increasing calls for more efforts to tackle displays of Nazi regalia.

"There is no place in Australia for symbols that glorify the horrors of the Holocaust," said Attorney General Mark Dreyfus, announcing the new legislation.

"We will no longer allow people to profit from the display and sale of items which celebrate the Nazis," he further stated. “The ban includes the trade and public display of flags, armbands, T-shirts, insignia and the publication of symbols online promoting Nazi ideology,” said Dreyfus.

Even after the ban, public display&nbsp;of the Nazi's SS symbols and swastika for educational, literary, academic, artistic, journalistic or scientific purposes will be permitted.

Similar bans were already announced by Victoria and Queensland earlier this year. The ban was drafted carefully to ensure that the display of the swastika for religious purposes is excluded, because of its spiritual significance.

Australia's Anti-Defamation Commission Chairman Dvir Abramovich described the move as a "profound moment that represents the culmination of a six-year personal campaign".

The recent appearance of neo-Nazis on the streets of Australia took Holocaust survivors "back to their darkest days", Abramovich said, while speaking to the BBC.

The Australian unit of Dell Technologies Inc was found guilty of misleading the customers about the prices, and discounts on its add-on monitors on its official website, said Australia's competition regulator on Tuesday.

As per reports, the customers who chose to purchase a personal computer system were given the option by Dell Australia in the name of a lucrative offer to bundle a compatible monitor at a discounted, or a 'strikethrough' price.

The company suggested to the clients that it would be much cheaper to buy the monitor in a bundle rather than separately.

"Dell Australia admitted that the monitors were not sold for the 'strikethrough' price for most of the relevant time and, in some cases, the add-on price shown was more expensive than if the monitor was bought on a stand-alone basis," the Australian Competition and Consumer Commission (ACCC) said in a filing.

As India gear up to face Australia in the second World Test Championship (WTC) Final, starting June 7th at the Oval in London, Dravid addressed the media and said while winning will be the icing on the cake, the fans and supporters must cherish the journey in this cycle. India tasted tremendous success in the latest WTC Cycle (from 2021 to 2023), including beating some top teams like Australia at home and even drawing the away five-match series against England 2-2. Though they remained unbeaten at home in Tests, India’s only low point in this cycle came during the away Test series against South Africa in 2021/22, where despite winning the first game, they lost the three-match series 2-1.

Once branded "Australia's worst female serial killer" Kathleen Folbigg, who has spent 20 years in jail for murdering her four children, has been pardoned. As per BBC, the woman was pardoned after new evidence suggested that she in fact did not kill her infant children.

Folbigg was convicted by a jury for the deaths of Caleb, Patrick, Sarah, and Laura over a period of ten years.&nbsp;

However, a recent investigation revealed that scientists believe the children may have died from natural causes.&nbsp;

<h2>Miscarriage of justice</h2>

This case has been widely regarded as a grave miscarriage of justice in Australia.&nbsp;Throughout the ordeal, Folbigg has consistently maintained her innocence.&nbsp;

In 2003, the mother of four was sentenced to 25 years in prison for the murders of three children and the manslaughter of her first son, Caleb.&nbsp;

The children, ranging in age from 19 days to 19 months, died suddenly between 1989 and 1999. Prosecutors at the time alleged that she had suffocated them.&nbsp;

<h2>Previous appeals</h2>

On 24 October 2003, Folbigg was sentenced to forty years' imprisonment with a non-parole period of thirty years.

An appeal in 2005 reduced her sentence to thirty years imprisonment with a non-parole period of twenty-five years.

However, the appeal and a 2019 inquiry did not find sufficient grounds to question her guilt and heavily relied on circumstantial evidence from her original trial.&nbsp;

<h2>The new evidence</h2>

This pardon follows a long-standing campaign advocating for the woman's release, which was sparked by a team of immunologists discovering a genetic mutation shared by her daughters that could cause sudden cardiac death.&nbsp;

The recent inquiry, led by a retired judge and former state chief justice Tom Bathurst, prompted prosecutors to acknowledge that advances in genetic research on gene mutations had altered their understanding of the children's deaths.&nbsp;

Additionally, evidence surfaced indicating that her sons possessed a different genetic mutation associated with sudden-onset epilepsy in mice.

On Monday, the New South Wales Attorney General, Michael Daley, announced that Bathurst had concluded that there was reasonable doubt about Folbigg's guilt in each case.&nbsp;

As per Guardian, Bathurst told the attorney general that he had reached "a firm view that there was reasonable doubt as to the guilt of Ms Folbigg for each of the offences for which she was originally tried".

Consequently, the governor of New South Wales signed a full pardon, ordering Folbigg's immediate release from prison.

However, the pardon does not erase Folbigg's convictions. Her supporters on Monday reportedly began calling for "very, very significant" compensation for her.

A decision about Folbigg's convictions would be made by the Court of Criminal Appeal if Bathurst decides to refer the case to them.&nbsp;

Australian Prime Minister Anthony Albanese on Friday called for greater engagement between the United States and China, saying a breakdown in dialogue between the superpowers could have devastating consequences for the world.

Shangrila-La Dialogue: Australia PM says breakdown in US-China relations would be devastating

After a lengthy and contentious trial, Ben Roberts-Smith, a highly decorated Australian soldier, suffered a significant defeat in a defamation case against major newspapers.&nbsp;

The case revolved around serious allegations of murder, domestic violence, witness intimidation, and war crimes. Roberts-Smith, a former member of Australia's esteemed Special Air Service regiment, took legal action against three newspapers that published reports in 2018 accusing him of involvement in the killing of six unarmed prisoners in Afghanistan.

Australia's military engagement in Afghanistan spanned two decades, during which approximately 39,000 troops were deployed as part of US and NATO-led operations against the Taliban and other militant groups. As returning veterans came back home, the actions of some soldiers came under scrutiny.

Justice Anthony Beskano, presiding over the case, ultimately ruled that the majority of the allegations made by the newspapers were "substantially true" and dismissed the case.&nbsp;The verdict was widely regarded as a significant win for media freedom in Australia.

Before the trial, Roberts-Smith had gained widespread recognition as one of Australia's most celebrated and distinguished living soldiers. He had received the Victoria Cross, the highest military honour in the country, for his remarkable bravery during a mission in Afghanistan where his unit was searching for a senior Taliban commander.&nbsp;

Roberts-Smith had even been personally acknowledged by Queen Elizabeth II, and his image was prominently displayed in the Australian War Memorial in Canberra.

However, the newspapers involved in the case, including The Age, The Sydney Morning Herald, and The Canberra Times, alleged that Roberts-Smith's esteemed public persona concealed a history of criminal conduct.&nbsp;

They reported instances where Roberts-Smith allegedly kicked an unarmed Afghan civilian off a cliff and ordered subordinates to shoot him. He was also accused of participating in the machine-gunning of a man with a prosthetic leg, which he purportedly brought back to Australia and used as a drinking vessel with fellow soldiers.&nbsp;

Furthermore, he faced allegations of domestic violence against a woman in a Canberra hotel and engaging in a campaign of bullying against a fellow soldier. Justice Beskano clarified that while not all the allegations were completely proven, some were deemed substantially true.

The defamation trial became one of the longest and most protracted in Australia's history, with 40 witnesses testifying and presenting distressing evidence concerning the conduct of Australia's special forces.

The estimated legal costs incurred by the media outlets involved soared to around US$16 million, making it one of the country's costliest defamation cases. The media's legal representatives indicated their intention to seek indemnity costs from Roberts-Smith at a later stage.

In 2020, an internal military investigation concluded that special forces personnel had unlawfully killed 39 Afghan civilians and prisoners. The investigation uncovered disturbing allegations of summary executions, competitions over body counts, and torture carried out by Australian forces.

Under mounting pressure, the Australian government appointed a Special Investigator to examine whether current and former soldiers should face criminal charges. This process has already resulted in one individual in his 40s being charged with "one count of War Crime-Murder," marking the first time a serving or former member of the Australian Defence Force faces such charges.

Reports suggest that Ben Roberts-Smith is among those who remain under investigation by the Office of the Special Investigator.

After a lengthy and contentious trial, Ben Roberts-Smith, a highly decorated Australian soldier, suffered a significant defeat in a defamation case against major newspapers.

After a lengthy and contentious trial, Ben Roberts-Smith, a highly decorated Australian soldier, suffered a significant defeat in a defamation case against major newspapers. Justice Anthony Beskano, presiding over the case, ultimately ruled that the majority of the allegations made by the newspapers were "substantially true" and dismissed the case. The verdict was widely regarded as a significant win for media freedom in Australia. He had received the Victoria Cross, the highest military honour in the country, for his remarkable bravery during a mission in Afghanistan where his unit was searching for a senior Taliban commander. Roberts-Smith had even been personally acknowledged by Queen Elizabeth II, and his image was prominently displayed in the Australian War Memorial in Canberra. They reported instances where Roberts-Smith allegedly kicked an unarmed Afghan civilian off a cliff and ordered subordinates to shoot him. He was also accused of participating in the machine-gunning of a man with a prosthetic leg, which he purportedly brought back to Australia and used as a drinking vessel with fellow soldiers. Furthermore, he faced allegations of domestic violence against a woman in a Canberra hotel and engaging in a campaign of bullying against a fellow soldier. Justice Beskano clarified that while not all the allegations were completely proven, some were deemed substantially true. Highly-decorated Australian soldier loses case against media giants amidst grave war crimes allegations

One of Australia's most decorated soldiers has lost a defamation case against some newspapers. Along with that, the judge in Sydney has found that the Victoria Cross a drawn Ben Roberts-Smith murdered unarmed civilians in Afghanistan. The judgment came after a year-long trial but it is not a criminal finding of guilt rather it is a determination on the Civil standard of the balance of probabilities. The trial and the findings uncovered several horrific incidents which involved the decorated soldier.

Scientists have discovered one of Australia's first long-distance walkers,&nbsp;a 250kg marsupial with "heeled hands" that explored the continent's parched interior 3.5 million years ago.

Flinders University palaeontologists used 3D scanning to describe a new group of ancient marsupials called Ambulator - meaning walker or wanderer - for its distinctive leg and foot characteristics that allowed it to easily move large distances.

The classification is based on the finding of an incomplete skeleton in 2017 at the Kalamurina Sanctuary of the Australian Wildlife Conservancy in north-eastern South Australia.&nbsp;

According to Jacob van Zoelen, the study's primary author and a PhD student at Flinders University, the specimen, now known as Ambulator keanei, was unusual for the quantity of bones it contained that originated from a single species.

“What was really cool about this specimen is that the foot was encased in concretion, this rock that formed shortly after death,” he told The Guardian.

Soft tissue imprints inside the rock were revealed by CT scanning, providing researchers with knowledge into the nature of the animal's footpad.

Many huge contemporary herbivores, such as elephants and rhinoceroses, are digitigrades, which means they walk on the tips of their toes rather than their heels.

<h2>What are&nbsp;Ambulators?</h2>

Ambulator, on the other hand, was a plantigrade that walked with its heels on the ground to distribute weight, much like humans.

These adaptations occurred at a period when the Australian climate got drier and grasslands and open habitat increased.

“These animals were needing methods of evolving efficient locomotion,” Van Zoelen told the Guardian.

Ambulator is a member of the diprotodontids, a family of giant marsupial herbivores that played an important role in Australian ecosystems until the final species became extinct some 40,000 years ago.

Diprotodontids were an incredibly diverse family of animals, Van Zoelen said. “You’ve got ones that are capable of climbing … you have ones with insanely large cheekbones like Euryzygoma, you’ve got ones with really gnarly teeth.”

“The largest herbivores we have today are kangaroos, but some of these animals grew up to 2.7 tonnes,” he added.

The rhinoceros-sized Diprotodon, the biggest marsupial known to live, was one prominent diprotodontid.

Ambulator keanei was originally placed in the genus Zygomaturus, but researchers determined that "while the teeth are very similar, the skull is much more slender, with much smaller cheek muscles than Zygomaturus," according to Van Zoelen.

The findings have been published in the journal Royal Society Open Science.

A man in Australia escaped with his life after a saltwater crocodile attacked him at an exclusive resort in Queensland. Marcus McGowan, 51, was snorkelling when the predator attacked him from behind. However, he pulled its jaws off his head, suffering severe scratches. McGowan received immediate medical attention at a nearby island hospital. He is currently undergoing treatment at a hospital in Cairns. At the time of the incident, McGowan was in the water with a group of people about 28 km off Haggerstone Island near Cape York. "I thought it was a shark, but when I reached up, I realised it was a crocodile. I was able to lever its jaws open just far enough to get my head out," he told BBC. The crocodile, speculated to be a juvenile, returned from behind for another go. McGowan pushed it away but suffered a bit to his hand. Are crocodile attacks common in Australia? Crocodile attacks are rare in Australia. However, the number of attacks has increased in the last few months. They are common in Australia's tropical north. In February, rangers shot a 13.4 ft crocodile that attacked a man and ate his dog at a boat ramp in north Cairns. Since record-keeping began in 1985, this was the 13th fatal crocodile attack that happened in Queensland. Earlier in May, Australian authorities found the remains of a 65-year-old fisherman Kevin Darmody inside a 13.4 ft crocodile on the nearby Kennedy River. According to the environment department in Queensland, crocodiles in the open sea can be tough to locate as the predators can travel several miles every day. However, they guaranteed to probe the incident. The management programme in Queensland ensured the removal of 'problem crocodiles' from public areas to protect the public. The authorities euthanise the predator only in rare cases. Australia banned crocodile hunting in 1971. Since then, the crocodile population has bounced back. According to a report from Wired, there are around 100,000 saltwater crocodiles in northern Australia. Their average size is 20 ft, and their average weight is 1000 pounds. These 'salties' lurk in warm rivers, lagoons, and billabongs and feed on animals like pigs, water buffalos, and small sharks. In 2005, the Australian government rejected the plan to allow trophy hunting of saltwater crocodiles in northern Australia despite two fatal attacks on divers. International croc experts supported the proposal to legalise crocodile hunting. However, animal welfare organisations regarded it as cruel. (With inputs from agencies) WATCH WION LIVE HERE

A Melbourne nightclub in Australia has become the centre of a raging controversy after it brought live reptiles, including snakes and a baby crocodile, for its relaunch over the weekend. The club named Two Wrongs, located on Chapel Street in South Yarra, had a relaunch party to which several social media influencers were invited. The influencers could be seen holding snakes and baby crocodiles and posing for the cameras. Two Wrongs' Instagram page was flooded with pictures as the club attempted to drive its popularity. However, as soon as the images went viral, it brought severe online backlash as netizens slammed the club and influencers for putting the animals in harm's way. After the backlash, the images and videos of the reptiles vanished from the club's online media accounts. However, netizens managed to save the pictures and shamed the club and the influencers for their actions. "Use of animals as a promotional tool in an incredibly frightening environment for them is disgusting and cruel," one person wrote while another added, "Passing around animals in a bar is just cruel. Great rebrand." "Those poor animals would have been so frightened," a third commented, while one wrote, "This is ridiculous. Terrible environment for these animals." Since reptiles are sensitive to vibrations and loud music, it looks highly unlikely that proper permission was sought to display them at the club. George Purcell, an MP from the Animal Justice party, wrote a letter to the minister for environment, Ingrid Stitt and requested prompt action. “Animals have no place in nightclubs. The government and environment department must use this opportunity to send a strong message that animals are not props to be passed around for photo opportunities and ensure this never happens again," read her letter. <h2>Rare 6.0 magnitude earthquake hit Melbourne</h2>

In the year 2021, a rare 6.0 magnitude earthquake struck Melbourne causing damage to buildings.

The epicentre was near Mansfield, a rural town in the state of Victoria. The town is about 200 km northeast of Melbourne. The epicentre was at a depth of 10 km. An aftershock of intensity 4.0 was recorded. The earthquake was felt as far as Adelaide and Sydney.&nbsp;

Quakes are relatively unusual in Australia's populated east due to its position in the middle of the Indo-Australian Tectonic Plate, according to Geoscience Australia. The quake on Wednesday measured higher than the country's deadliest tremor, a 5.6 in Newcastle in 1989, which resulted in 13 deaths.

A 7.7 magnitude earthquake hit the southeast of the Loyalty Islands in the French territory of New Caledonia on May 19 and triggered tsunami warnings to nations in the South Pacific. The Pacific Tsunami Warning Centre (PTWC) issued warnings for Vanuatu and Fiji while Australia's meteorological agency issued a warning for Lord Howe Island off its east coast. A tsunami alert that was issued in New Caledonia was lifted later as per an official.&nbsp;

"Based on the preliminary earthquake parameters, hazardous tsunami waves are possible for coasts within 1,000 km (620 miles) of the earthquake epicentre," the Pacific Tsunami Warning Center said in a bulletin.

It advised residents in endangered coastal regions to exercise caution. In the city of Noumea in New Caledonia, a hotel receptionist told AFP she felt no shaking from the tremor.

The United States Geological Survey (USGS) reported that the earthquake occurred at a depth of roughly 24 miles or 38 km. According to New Zealand, the country was still determining if the earthquake put its coasts in danger from tsunamis.

Slavery is something that's considered a thing of the past. But in Australia, a couple has been accused of keeping a woman as slave. Chee Kit Chong, 44, and wife Angie Yeh Ling Liaw, 29 were presented in court in Melbourne. The couple has been charged with possessing a slave as well as using coercion and threats in order to force another person in servitude, according to several media reports.

Australian Federal Police raided the couple's home&nbsp;in October last year. They received a tip-off from a healthcare worker who reportedly noticed the&nbsp;human trafficking. It has been reported that the woman was kept as a slave in the couple's house in Point Cook for 10 months between January and October 2022.

The couple is currently on bail. On Thursday, they appeared in Magistrate's court in Melbourne via video conferencing.

Ms Liaw was represented by Payne Wu from Hiways Lawyers. Wu told the court that the firm was likely to provide representation for Mr Chong. However, he said that it needed more time to determine whether there was a conflict of interest.

The case was adjourned for further hearing.&nbsp;

<h2>Burden of evidence not on the woman</h2>

Commonwealth prosecutor Zoe Hough reportedly said that the victim was a vulnerable adult and that she would not be required to give evidence at a committal hearing.

The magistrate said that several witnesses, including hospital and medical staff, can be called in the upcoming committal hearing. This will likely be heard in September or October this year.

AFP reported that there has been an increase in reports of human trafficking and modern slavery. There were 294 reports recorded in the financial year 2021-22. In the previous year, 224 such cases were recorded.

"Everyone can play a role in stopping human trafficking. We encourage anyone who suspects human trafficking or sees something suspicious to report it," said Detective Superintendent Simone Butcher. She was quoted by AFP.

Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Wednesday (May 24) wrapped up his two-day visit to Australia. The trip's highlight was the 20,000-strong diaspora crowd that PM Modi addressed in Sydney alongside Australian PM Anthony Albanese and other politicians.&nbsp;

Despite US President Joe Biden cancelling his Australia visit which led to the shelving of the Quad summit, PM Modi was the only leader that did not alter his plans. He visited Australia after a short trip to Papua New Guinea and managed to strengthen relations between the two countries. Here are the five key takeaways from the visit:&nbsp;

<h2>India talks straight on Hindu temple vandalism in Australia</h2>

The recent incidents of attacks on Hindu temples in Australia had raised quite a few eyebrows in India. PM Modi, during wide-ranging talks with his Australian counterpart, raised the issue.&nbsp;

"Prime Minister Albanese and I have in the past discussed the issue of attacks on temples in Australia and activities of separatist elements. We discussed the matter today as well," said PM Modi.&nbsp;

"It is not acceptable to us that anyone hurt the friendly and cordial ties between India and Australia by their actions or ideology," he said.

In a presser,&nbsp;Foreign Secretary Vinay Mohan Kwatra, responding to WION's question about the attacks, reiterated that the Indian government had made its case clearly.&nbsp;&nbsp;

"The attack on the temples and activities of the other separatist elements were discussed by the two Prime Ministers earlier, and today also. From the discussions last time till this time, the progress is clearly reflected in the fact that PM Modi thanked PM Albanese for the action that the Govt of Australia has taken against these elements," said Kwatra.&nbsp;

<h2>Quad and China</h2>

Quad, an informal alliance between India, USA, Japan and Australia, was primarily formed to keep China in check in the Indo-Pacific. Despite Japan and USA missing from the action, India and Australia managed to hold a serious discussion on the issue.&nbsp;

"PM Albanese and I have discussed in Quad Summit, about the peace in the region. We have discussed issues in the Indo-Pacific region," said PM Modi.&nbsp;

Kwatra added that the two leaders "spoke about free, open, stable and prosperous Indo-Pacific"&nbsp;and how India and Australia could work together.&nbsp;The two sides signed off saying they wanted to amplify and harness the opportunities but also to take active steps to mitigate the challenges that arise in the region.

<h2>Trade relations</h2>

To significantly expand bilateral trade ties, the two PMs decided to focus on a Comprehensive Economic Cooperation Agreement (CECA).

"We are building a resilient and reliable supply chain. This will strengthen the business of both countries," said PM Modi.

The countries have already signed&nbsp;India-Australia Economic Cooperation and Trade Agreement (ECTA). PM Modi added that a&nbsp;"Migration and Mobility partnership" agreement had&nbsp;been reached between Australia and India&nbsp;which will facilitate the movement of skilled professionals.

<h2>Defence ties</h2>

PM Modi in his speech pointed out the increased military relations between the two nations. He referred to&nbsp;“AUSTRA HIND 22” - a bilateral training exercise that took place last year.&nbsp;

“The high degree of mutual trust between us has naturally translated into greater cooperation on defence and security matters. Our navies are participating in joint naval exercises. I am confident that there is merit in working together to realise the true potential in closer defence and security cooperation,” said Modi.&nbsp;

<h2>Opening of consulates in Bengaluru, Brisbane</h2>

The PM on Tuesday announced that New Delhi will soon open its consulate in Brisbane, fulfilling a long-pending demand by the Indian diaspora.&nbsp;

“A new Indian consulate will be opened soon in Brisbane,” he said.
