Australia has become the first country in the world to legalise the use of psychedelics to treat some mental health conditions. Approved psychiatrists can now prescribe MDMA to those suffering post-traumatic stress disorder and magic mushrooms for some types of depression.

Australia becomes first Country to legalise magic mushrooms for mental health

Banned drugs like M-D-M-A, more commonly known as Ecstacy and magic mushrooms can be now used as a remedy for severe post traumatic stress disorder and depression cases. In a landmark judgment, the Australian government has legalised the usage of Ecstacy and psilocybin, an active component found in magic mushrooms to aid treatment resistant depression.

Talking to public broadcaster ABC on Friday, Australia's Industry and Science Minister Ed Husic characterised the move as "making tough calls" and prioritising "broader environmental things" while fighting inflation.

Budget constraints force Australia to abandon billion-dollar space satellite programme

Starting Saturday (July 1), Australia will become the world's first country to allow doctors to prescribe MDMA and magic mushrooms to treat psychiatric conditions such as depression and Post Trauma Stress Disorder (PTSD). Although the decision was taken in February earlier this year, it remains a controversial move.

Therapeutic Goods Administration (TGA), Australia's drug watchdog, approved the move, following a three-year process which included extensive consultation with experts.

For long, it has been believed that psychedelic drugs have the ability to treat mental health conditions.
The advocates hope that the drugs will be one day used for treating eating disorders, alcohol dependence and obsessive-compulsive disorder.

Australia: Kidnappers caught napping in car as hostages dial police after escaping

In an effort to cut down costs, Australia has scrapped what could have been a key part in the development of the country's space industry. The $700 million programme was set to launch four satellites between 2028 and 2033. However, budget repair is the current goal of the government. The federal budget of the year lays focus on relieving cost-of-living in the heat of rising inflation.

Star batsman Steve Smith's unbeaten 85 was the centrepiece of Australia's impressive 339-5 on the opening day of the second Test against England at Lord's on Wednesday.

But off-spinner Joe Root, better known as the number one-ranked batsman in Test cricket, took two wickets in four balls late in the day to check the progress of Ashes-holders Australia, 1-0 up in the five-match series after a thrilling two-wicket win at Edgbaston last week.

Australia were in command at 316-3, despite being sent into bat by England captain Ben Stokes in overcast conditions and on a green tinged-pitch that promised to aid his five-strong pace attack.

But dashing left-hander Travis Head, scoring at better than a run-a-ball, then charged down the pitch only to be beaten by a sharply turning Root delivery with Jonny Bairstow, whose wicketkeeping had proved fallible in Birmingham, completing an excellent stumping.

Head was out for 77 following a stand of 118 with Smith where England were given a taste of their own 'Bazball' medicine.

But three balls later, Australia's 316-4 became 316-5 when all-rounder Cameron Green fell for a duck, slicing Root to James Anderson at mid-off.

At stumps Root, the only spinner in the attack after England dropped Moeen Ali, had figures of 2-19 from eight overs.

Fast bowler Josh Tongue, recalled in place of Moeen, removed Australia left-handed openers Usman Khawaja and David Warner, who made a valuable 66, in a return of 2-88 in 18 overs.

But the day belonged to Australia, with No 3 Marnus Labuschagne, who made a useful 47, telling Sky Sports: "You're going to take that (total) when you get sent in on a wicket that we thought had a fair bit in it."

The match was briefly halted before the second over when two Just Stop Oil protesters ran out of the Grandstand and onto the outfield, sprinkling the environmental pressure group's trademark orange powder on the square but not on the pitch.

Bairstow grabbed one of the demonstrators and carried them off the playing surface, with the other apprehended by stewards.

A third demonstrator was tackled before making it onto the outfield, with the police making three arrests.

Pope injury scare

England's aggressive approach had come under scrutiny in Birmingham, but missing several chances was a bigger factor in their defeat.

On Wednesday, Stuart Broad looked to have dismissed Warner, then on 20, yet again in an Ashes clash, only for fourth slip Ollie Pope, who later went off injured with a shoulder injury, to drop a two-handed catch.

Warner cashed in with a 66-ball fifty completed when he pulled Tongue, in just his second Test, for six.

But off what became the last ball before lunch Tongue bowled Khawaja, playing no shot, to end a stand of 73.

Warner also fell to Tongue, bowled between bat and pad by a ball that cut back sharply off the pitch.

England for all Australia's playing and missing, did not help themselves by giving away 36 runs in extras, including 12 no-balls.

Smith stuck Stuart Broad through the covers for two fours off successive balls then successfully overturned a caught-behind decision off the next delivery on his way to a 102-ball fifty.

Stokes, who has been troubled by a longstanding knee injury, brought himself on but only bowled three wicketless overs.

Smith and Labuschagne, until recently the world's two top-ranked Test batsmen, had managed just 35 runs between them across four innings at Edgbaston.

But on Wednesday their century partnership was ended when Labuschagne was caught behind off an excellent delivery from Ollie Robinson to leave Australia 198-3.

Whales’ annual migration

As per local media reports, hundreds of marine mammals have been spotted off the coast in Sydney this month given their annual migration north from Antarctic waters to the Great Barrier Reef. Notably, the researchers have been stunned by the large number of humpbacks observed this season.

A wildlife scientist and whale expert at Australia’s Macquarie University, Vanessa Pirotta, said that there could be a number of factors contributing to the increased number of whales on the country’s coasts this season.

She also said that they are not 100 per cent sure what is driving this increase in whale numbers but said that their “population is recovering” and maybe there are favourable conditions in Antarctica this year.

Pirotta also said that it might be because of the El Nino weather pattern with warmer conditions there are more people on the beach and seeing more whales, adding that “It’s hard to say.”

This year around, up to 50,000 whales are expected to pass Australia’s east coast during their annual migration season. Additionally, given the rise in the number of humpback whales the country removed them from their threatened species list, last year.
Modi-Albanese share ‘chaat-jalebi’ bonhomie amid growing India-Australia ties

Beachgoers on K’gari (Fraser Island) in Queensland have been cautioned to prioritise their safety in the presence of Australia's wild dogs, known as dingoes. Recent incidents of dingo attacks have prompted authorities to issue a warning and provide guidelines on how to stay safe. The Queensland Department of Environment and Science shared videos capturing the alarming encounters with one video showing a dingo approaching a group of sunbathers on the island and biting a French tourist on the rear end on June 4.

Another video shows a dingo chasing a boy and a man along the beach. The same dingo had bitten a 7-year-old boy a few days earlier. These incidents raised concerns about the safety of beachgoers.

Euthanisation of the aggressive dingo

Due to the dingo's repeated aggressive behaviour and the perceived risk it posed to people, authorities made the decision to euthanise it on June 10. The dingo's interactions with humans were deemed to be of a "high risk" nature.

Another terrifying encounter

Despite the euthanisation, another dingo attack occurred a week later. A 10-year-old boy was grabbed on the shoulder near a campsite and dragged underwater. Thankfully, his 12-year-old sister intervened and saved him from further harm. The boy received treatment for puncture wounds, scratches, and bruises.

Concerningly, the same dingo was spotted near the camping area later, scavenging for buried food scraps in the sand.

Understanding the behaviour of dingoes

The Queensland Department of Environment and Science explained that dingoes when they lose their natural fear of humans and become accustomed to their presence, may exhibit aggressive behavior in their quest for food. To ensure safety in the presence of wild dogs, the Queensland government has provided guidelines. Also Read | Archaeologists unearth 4,000-year-old ‘Stonehenge’ burial ground in the Netherlands Another video shows a dingo chasing a boy and a man along the beach. The same dingo had bitten a 7-year-old boy a few days earlier. These incidents raised concerns about the safety of beachgoers. Euthanisation of the aggressive dingo Due to the dingo's repeated aggressive behaviour and the perceived risk it posed to people, authorities made the decision to euthanise it on June 10. The dingo's interactions with humans were deemed to be of a "high risk" nature. Another terrifying encounter Despite the euthanisation, another dingo attack occurred a week later. A 10-year-old boy was grabbed on the shoulder near a campsite and dragged underwater. Thankfully, his 12-year-old sister intervened and saved him from further harm. The boy received treatment for puncture wounds, scratches, and bruises. A dingo has been filmed biting a tourist in Australia. Understanding the behaviour of dingoes The Queensland Department of Environment and Science explained that dingoes when they lose their natural fear of humans and become accustomed to their presence, may exhibit aggressive behavior in their quest for food. To ensure safety in the presence of wild dogs, the Queensland government has provided guidelines. The authorities advised them to keep close to children. They urged everyone to always stay within arm's reach of children and young teenagers. Moreover, the officials also guided the tourists to travel in groups to enhance safety. A Russian diplomat in Canberra, Australia, is staging a sit-in protest on a piece of land near the Australian Parliament, where Moscow plans to build a new embassy. Australia dismissed Russia's lease for the land due to national security concerns, which Russia had held since 2008. The Australian police are monitoring the diplomat, but diplomatic immunity prevents his arrest. The Australian Prime Minister, Anthony Albanese, stated that the presence of the protesting diplomat does not pose a national security threat.

Russia has mounted a legal challenge to save the embassy it was planning to construct near the Australian Parliament House in Canberra. Moscow was seeking an injunction at the country's highest court on the grounds that the move was unconstitutional.

The footage, posted on Instagram, shows a drink being thrown at the customer, who retaliates by throwing food back at the employees. The incident, which took place at the Wynyard store, has ignited a debate about appropriate behaviour in fast-food establishments.

The viral video sparks controversy

The video, shared by Brown Cardigan on Instagram, quickly gained traction, amassing over 1.1 million views and 38,000 likes within a day.
Ricky Ponting was left dumbfounded on day 2 of the 1st Ashes Test being played at Edgbaston when English skipper Ben Stokes handed the ball to Harry Brook as first change. The change came when Broad had taken two wickets in two balls to leave Australia in a bit of a soup in the first session itself. Ponting's fellow commentator Michael Atherton, however, gave an epic reply to Ponting.

"This is Bazball, Ricky," said Atherton. Indeed it was, as was England's shocking declaration on day 1 after amassing 393/8 and Joe Root unbeaten on 118. England were ahead a bit with three wickets at lunch on day 2 which included Marnus Labuschagne, David Warner and Steve Smith. What happened after that was pure Test match batting.
Usman Khawaja dropped the anchor from the second session onwards and by the time the day came to an end he was this immoveable object with 126 runs to his name that too unbeaten. Australia finished that day on 311/5, trailing by just 83 runs after Khawaja added 81 runs with Travis Head (50), 72 runs with Cameron Green (38) and 91 unbeaten with Alex Carey (52 not out) for the fourth, fifth and sixth wicket, respectively.

It wasn't like that Khawaja's innings was without the glitch. He was beaten a couple times and was even bowled once after England took the new ball. Stuart Broad, however, had overstepped on the ball which managed to go past Khawaja's resilient defence. His favorite shot during his innings has been the pull, off which he scored 36 runs including eight of his 14 fours.

Having made his debut for Australia in 2011, Khawaja's career is divided in two parts: 2011-19 and from 2022 onwards.

The southpaw had scored 2,887 runs in 44 games at an average of 40.66 in the first part of his career. He had also scored eight hundreds from 2011-19. Australia dropped Khawaja after that before summoning him back in the side in 2022 for the Ashes Down Under.

Ever since making his comeback, Khawaja has not only resurrected his career but how. In 18 games he has played since that career-changing Test against England in Sydney where he scored twin hundreds, the left-hand batsman has scored 1,747 runs.

His 1,747 runs are the most by any batsman since 2022 - the second best being Joe Root with 1,591 runs. Khawaja's average since 2022 has been 69.88 against Root's 56.82. Khawaja has also scored seven hundreds since then with a highest score of 195.

The most important thing about Khawaja's resurgence been his ability to bat in different situations. After making his comeback, the batsman has travelled not much but to India and Pakistan - the countries famous for wreaking a few careers with trail by spin. Khawaja, however, has risen to the occasion - scoring three hundreds there - two in Pakistan and one in India. All in all, Khawaja's four hundreds out of his seven have come out of home - a record itself since 2022.

With three more days and four more Tests to go in the ongoing Ashes, it looks like Khawaja is ready to make full use of his purple patch. If he does that, Australia will definitely have a better chance at countering the Bazball and may be win their first Ashes in England since 2001.

The footage of the scuffle, filmed by the man's daughter, shows him smiling nervously as a few hits get exchanged between both sides. "My dad was just trying to make sure that kangaroo stopped getting frisky with that lady," his daughter wrote on TikTok while sharing the video. The video shows the kangaroo following a woman, which was when the man intervened in order to help her. When he reached out to stop the animal, the kangaroo stood up and started jumping and clawing at the man. The man can be seen defending himself when the animal continues to hop towards him and tries to kick him. Later, a young boy can be seen trying to help the man. Both of them try to walk away from the animal while it continues to follow. Finally, a zookeeper intervened and told the kangaroo, “Cut it out, cut it out, naughty boy,” while pointing at it, after which the animal calmed down and stopped fighting. Netizens react “Aussie lady saves the day with a point of the finger and a stern word,” one TikTok user commented. “The way he just stopped when he was called a naughty boy,” another user commented. “The birds (were) egging the kangaroo on saying fight the fight,” another TikTok user wrote. Park officials told PerthNow that the kangaroo “was just being playful. Sometimes the kangaroos act like that, but they are really just playing... it’s a natural thing.” “The more you encourage them, the more they will react,” park officials told PerthNow. "I just don't think the investor programme is on their radar at the moment - they might overhaul it down the track. In the meantime, I think they might just keep a small window open." Wang acknowledged that many people may not sympathise with their situation, but stressed that he believes that the small group of BIIP holders is not being treated fairly. "I know a lot of people won't sympathise with us - we're a small group of people...But we're not being treated fairly."
Australian lawmaker, Senator David Van from the opposition Liberal Party was suspended, on Thursday (June 15) by his party members after he was accused of sexual assault in the parliament House by a female colleague.
In a tearful address to the parliament, an independent senator Thorpe, on Thursday said that she had been subjected to “sexual comments”, followed and cornered in a stairwell, “inappropriately touched” and “propositioned” by “powerful men” and went to call the Australian parliament “not a safe place for women”.

This was a day after the independent senator accused Van of “sexually assaulting” her but was later reportedly forced to withdraw the remark under threat of parliamentary sanction. However, on Thursday, she reiterated the core of her allegations against her colleague and said that she acknowledges “sexual assault” would mean different things to different people and said she would speak about her experience but did not name Van or say when the incidents occurred.

“What I experienced was being followed, aggressively propositioned and inappropriately touched,” Thorpe told the Senate where her remarks are protected by parliamentary privilege, which means that these allegations would not invoke Australia’s severe defamation laws. However, the independent senator has said Van had engaged lawyers in the matter.

In 2021, as per AFP, Van was forced to move his parliamentary office away from Thorpe’s. However, the reason for this was not mentioned, while both senators have previously acknowledged that it did happen. Thorpe also spoke about how she was “afraid” of walking out of her office.

“I know there are others that have experienced similar things and have not come forward in the interest of their careers and in fear that they would be presented to the world by the media in the same way that I have been today,” said Thorpe.

After Thorpe’s speech, former senator Amanda Stoker from Van’s Liberal Party also accused him of “squeezing my bottom twice” at a party in 2020, as per local media reports. In a statement to the local media, Stoker also said that the alleged incident took place at an “informal social gathering in a parliamentary office”.

‘Scandalous’: Van about the allegations, suspension

In a statement published after Thorpe’s speech, Van denied the allegations calling them “scandalous” and “outrageous”. He also said that would “fully cooperate with the investigators and answer any questions that they may have of me and Senator Thorpe should do the same”.

He also went on to accuse the independent senator of “bringing the Senate into disrepute” and “cowering under the umbrella of parliamentary privilege”. However, Liberal Party leader Peter Dutton has since suspended Van after “further allegations” had been raised against him.

Notably, Van’s removal from the Liberal Party’s parliamentary caucus does not amount to his ouster from the parliament but rather he would now be an independent. Since 2021, Australian politics has witnessed several high-profile allegations of sexual assault and harassment inside the Parliament House.
