With less than three days to go for the 2023 Women's World Cup Australia have called out FIFA on the massive World Cup gender pay gap. The Matildas have also called on more countries to strike collective bargaining agreements to make the women's game as big as it can be. The total prize pot for the Women's World Cup which starts on Thursday is 110 million US Dollars that's a 300 per cent increase from the 2019 tournament but still significantly lower than the 440 million prize pot for men in Qatar last year.

Tim Shaddock, an Australian sailor who was stranded in the Pacific Ocean with his dog and survived by only eating raw fish and drinking rainwater for months has been rescued and is in a stable condition, doctors said.

Velvet gloves: The soft power influence of the Communist Party of China

Casting doubt over a proposal to supply Ukraine with retired fighter jets, Australia on Thursday said the matter was “complicated". Kyiv earlier requested dozens of retired F-18 fighter jets from Canberra, saying it would significantly boost its air power against the Russian forces.

Australian Defence Minister Richard Marles said the discussions around the F-18 fighter jets were “going on”, but added they were much more difficult than any other form of military support.

While Australia on Wednesday ramped up its support for Ukraine on the sidelines of the NATO summit which concluded in Lithuania, it stopped short of making any promise on fighter jets. Australia announced that it will send an additional fleet of 30 armoured Bushmaster infantry vehicles at a cost of US$67 million to the war-battered nation.

The memoir, as per a BBC report, was released two weeks ago and it recounted Christophe Glasl's time as a member of the Special Operations Group (SOG).

What exactly was the book about?

As per BBC, the book recounted tales of murders, drug busts and also the response to the Port Arthur massacre which happens to be Australia's worst mass shooting.

On 28 April 1996, the perpetrator Martin Bryant opened fire on a crowd of people in a tourist complex some 100 km south of Hobart, Tasmania, killing 35 people and wounding 23 others.

The 'inaccuracies' in the book

As per the Victoria police, the author, Glasl, was not present in Port Arthur when the tragic incident took place. This has cast doubt on the former policeman's version of events.

Speaking to the Sydney Morning, a Victoria Police spokesperson said that only 10 Victorian SOG members went to Tasmania that day.

"To confirm, the former member was not part of the SOG deployment to Port Arthur nor was he even in Tasmania at the time," added the statement.

In a statement, the Victoria police said that one chapter which focuses on Glasl's "claimed involvement" in the "resolution" of the Port Arthur massacre was of particular concern.

What did the author say about these allegations?

As per The Australian newspaper, Glasl reportedly told the publisher that he was not in Tasmania on the day of the incident. He also said that he had always intended on it being a third-hand account.

The publisher Hachette Australia in its statement said that it has come to its attention that some of the book's content may be "inaccurate" and that due to this it has "taken the decision to withdraw this book from sale immediately" while a further review takes place.

While previously the publisher promoted the book as a "raw, behind-the-scenes look" at what went on in the special forces "where solidarity, camaraderie and loyalties were undermined by bullying, bastardisation, drug use, lies and betrayal", all mentions of the book have now been removed from the Hachette website.

Australia: 'Special Operations Group' memoir publisher takes it off market over false claims

Bella Macey, a 10-year-old kid from Australia, is suffering from complex regional pain syndrome (CRPS), often regarded as the “most painful condition” known to mankind. The rare and debilitating condition causes excruciating pain in her entire right leg when she moves or even when someone barely touches it.

The family of the girl said Bella was fine before their first overseas trip to Fiji after the pandemic. However, during the vacation, she developed a blister which later became infected and caused her foot to become inflamed, according to Australian media reports.

“It‘s all sharp, it’s burning, it’s tingly. It’s all sorts of different pain I never knew was possible," Bella was quoted as saying by A Current Affair.

“I can’t have a shower, I can’t have a bath. I can’t put (on) any sheets or anything on...even with a tissue, you can’t touch it with anything, otherwise, I will scream.”

Despite their best attempts, the family has been unable to find treatment for their kid in Australia. They are now planning to embark upon a painful trip to the US where Bella can receive treatment from the Spero Clinic, located in Fayetteville, Arkansas.

Rare chubby cheek rodents unexpectedly uncovered in Australia's Melbourne

Scientists uncovered the remains of the smallest extinct penguin species ever found which are said to have waddled their way around New Zealand around three million years ago. The study related to the findings was published, last month, in the Journal of Paleontology.

What did the scientists find?

The two fossils were discovered by Karl Raubenheimer in the three-million-year-old sediments in the southern Taranaki region of New Zealand’s North Island. According to the study, the fossilised skulls are said to belong to the newly discovered species, named Wilson’s little penguin (Eudyptula wilsonae).

The fossils were analysed by a team led by the Massey University of New Zealand and found that the nearly complete skulls belonged to an adult and a fledged juvenile who determined that they appear to be a part of the little penguin (Eudyptula minor) lineage.

The skulls are remarkably similar in both size and shape to little penguins which exist today and are the smallest living species of penguin. The researchers were unsure about how small the extinct penguins were since they did not find any other bones, however, the living penguins typically grow around 35 centimetres and weigh 0.9 kilograms.

What did the researchers say about the discovery?

In a statement, the researchers said that the findings help confirm the Zealandian origin of the little penguins as well as their presence during the Neogene period. Currently, little penguins and their four subspecies live across New Zealand, Australia and Tasmania but very little was known about their origins.

Scientists also wrote about how the recent findings have helped fill the gaps in this ecosystem’s history as well as provide insights into other extinct and living species from the country. “These newly discovered fossils show little penguins like kororā have been part of coastal ecosystems of Zealandia for at least three million years,” said Dr Daniel Thomas, a zoologist at Massey University in New Zealand, in a statement.

He added, “This is important when thinking about the origins of these penguins, the evolution of the seabird diversity of Aotearoa and the dynamic environment in which they live.” This comes as in June 2022, over 500 little penguins mysteriously washed up dead on beaches in New Zealand, reported Live Science.

While the researchers were unsure of what killed them, it was speculated that climate change may have played a role. It was also found that most of the dead seabirds were significantly underweight which had been attributed to the hotter ocean surface temperatures, caused by climate change, that might have driven the little penguins’ prey further away from their reach.

“The rising temperature means more species will find Aotearoa habitable, so it’s important to learn as much as we can about the species that lived here during the last warm-world phase,” said Dr Thomas.
Both Sydney Trains and the NSW government have extended their apologies for the widespread disruption caused by a peak-hour system shutdown on Thursday.

The incident occurred when a single staff member called in sick, resulting in significant delays and cancellations across multiple train lines, reported the Guardian.

Passengers were left stranded, stations became overcrowded, and even Town Hall Station had to be temporarily closed for safety reasons. While Sydney Trains rectified the staffing issue and arranged replacement buses, the incident highlights the need for improved contingency planning and staffing measures.

Indian spinner Ravichandran Ashwin is known for his no-holds-barred comments on a range of cricketing issues. Ashwin has now yet again come into the spotlight for his comments on the teams playing in Ashes 2023. Be it his sarcastic takes on the matches or his tweets, everything seems to be trending. This time, Ashwin’s sarcastic take on Jonny Bairstow’s contentious dismissal is in the news. Replying to one of his comments, an Indian journalist said that he didn’t agree with what the spinner said. In response, Ashwin’s reply has ignited a new debate.

Ravichandran Ashwin vs journalist

Ravichandran Ashwin had already given his take on Jonny Bairstow’s controversial dismissal. The 36-year-tweeted that a keeper would never have a dip at the stumps from that far out in a Test match unless he or his team has noticed a pattern of the batter leaving his crease after leaving a ball as Bairstow did. Ashwin also added that we must applaud the game smarts of the individual rather than skewing it toward unfair play or the spirit of the game.

It seems Ravichandran Ashwin’s comments didn’t go down well with journalist Rajdeep Sardesai, who took to Twitter and wrote, “Sorry to bang on about this but I do love the game. But to my friend Ashwin and all those who believe that Johnny Bairstow was fairly out, I have a simple question that would you be happy if you were given out in that way? That’s the real test. Ashes 2023: MCC criticises members amid Jonny Bairstow’s dismissal controversy

England’s most experienced right-arm pacer, James Anderson finally broke silence on his form. The 40-year-old has only picked up three wickets in the first two Tests of the Ashes 2023. While former cricketers like Michael Vaughan and Kevin Pietersen have said that he should be benched for the third Test, Anderson seems adamant about recovering from poor run of form in the Ashes. The English pacer added that he is not looking too far ahead into the future because of a bleak start in this Test series. Anderson made it clear that he’s just looking at the third Test and not focusing on his future in the longest format.

The Ashes have kept everyone hooked to their seats. The second Test between Australia and England at Lord’s was a nail-biting game. Chasing 371 in the fourth innings, England were bowled out for 327 on the final day. However, England captain Ben Stokes kept everyone's hopes high till he was at the crease. Stokes played a tremendous inning of 155 runs and reached his century with three back-to-back sixes off Cameron Green. While the England skipper may not have been able to take his team on the winning side, he has been earning praise for his brilliant knock. The latest addition to this list is former England captain Nasser Hussain.

England were in deep trouble when Ben Stokes came in to bat. It seemed like the batter was hoping to take the innings further by building a partnership with Jonny Bairstow. The England wicket-keeper's contentious stumping fired Stokes up. The England skipper was playing at 62 when Bairstow was declared out. After that, Stokes completed his century in just 21 balls. PwC sacks senior execs after tax scandal in Australia

Australia won the second Test by 43 runs at Lord's in London to go up 2-0 in the ongoing Ashes series against England. The home team were cruising along nicely when England skipper Ben Stokes was batting. The Three Lions, however, bundled out shortly after Stokes fell following a masterful 155. England's last pair of James Anderson and Josh Tongue, however, added 25 runs for the final wicket, delaying the inevitable for a while.

Stokes evoked the memories of his 2019 Headingley knock at Lord's as he reached his hundred with three back-to-back sixes off Cameron Green. Stokes turned on the heat in the game after Jonny Bairstow's controversial run-out on the final day and tore into the Australian attack. Stokes was on 62 off 126 balls when Bairstow departed and began the onslaught one over later with three fours off Green's over.

The England skipper again targeted Green in his next over as well and smoked him for first-ball four before hitting three consecutive sixes third ball onwards. Stokes took 22 off the over and reached his 100 as well, his 13th in the Tests. Apart from him, Ben Duckett scored 83 and was the first to fall on the final day on a team score of 177 after England started with 114/4 on the board from day 4.
