South African city of Cape Town’s public transport system has been paralysed after a taxi strike began last week, which has since turned violent and led to the death of two people, said the police on Monday (August 7). Australia and the United Kingdom issued a travel warning about the potential danger of travelling to Cape Town.

<h2>About the recent violence</h2>

At least two people were allegedly shot dead in separate incidents during the taxi strike in Cape Town on Monday morning, said the police. The South African Police Service (SAPS) spokesperson, Brigadier Novela Potelwa, said that the first death occurred when a driver fired shots at a person who was allegedly pelting stones at the vehicles.&nbsp;

“An individual was shot dead and three others injured after a motorist was pelted with stones on Airport Approach Road. The driver responded to the attack by firing several shots,” said Potelwa, as quoted by News24. An investigation has been launched into the incident.&nbsp;

The police on Monday also found the body of a 28-year-old man who had been shot multiple times, said the local media report. Separately, a report by AFP citing local officials said that a police officer was shot dead in a vehicle while patrolling a township 20 kilometres southeast of Cape Town, on Friday night.&nbsp;

“(The) possibility that the attack is related to the ongoing taxi strike cannot be ruled out,” said the police, adding that the officers were “performing crime prevention patrols to quell taxi related incidents”.&nbsp;

According to reports, multiple vehicles have been set on fire and several roads have been blocked due to the protests, which have since left thousands of commuters stranded.

In a statement, the local officials said that two government vehicles had been set on fire and one had been hijacked. This was in addition to four other incidents of torching and stoning of private vehicles and shootings, on Monday, in “clear attempts to target City staff and infrastructure,” the statement added.

As many as 30 people have been arrested, as per local media reports.

<h2>What is the taxi strike about?</h2>

The drivers of the minibus taxis, the main mode of transport for millions of working-class South Africans, went on a strike last week after 15 minibuses were impounded last Tuesday.

The move was said to be in line with a new municipal by-law that allows the city to impound vehicles over offences such as driving without a license, not displaying registration plates or overloading.&nbsp;

The South African National Taxi Council (SANTACO), which called for the strike action, also claimed that around 6,000 vehicles had been impounded since the beginning of the year and said they were “left with no other option” due to “the frivolous impoundment operations run by government.”&nbsp;

Over the weekend, negotiations between SANTACO and the City of Cape Town over the recent taxi impoundments failed. The strikes are expected to go on till Wednesday (August 9).&nbsp;

The strike prevented as many as 456,020 learners and 17,449 staff members from getting to school on Monday, reported Cape Times. Several health facilities reportedly remained closed due to roadblocks and violence.&nbsp;

<h2>Australia and UK issue travel advisories</h2>

On Monday, the British High Commission in South Africa issued a notice on Facebook on the unrest, asking travellers to delay driving “to and from the airport until the route is cleared” as “GPS services could divert you into less secure areas or into ongoing protests”.&nbsp;

Similarly, the Australian government on its website said, “Ongoing taxi strikes in the Cape Town area have the potential to turn violent, potentially impacting multiple areas, including journeys to and from the airport.”

It also advised travellers to “exercise a high degree of caution in South Africa due to the high level of serious crime.”

In Australia's Queensland, Sikh students may soon once again be able to wear a Kirpan — a religious article — on campus. As per media reports, a court in the state on Thursday (August 3rd) overturned a law that had banned the religious symbol in schools.

<h2>Discrimination or not</h2>

In Australia, the Weapons Act bans individuals from carrying knives in public places, including school, unless they have a reasonable excuse.

Kamaljit Kaur Athwal, a Sikh woman, took the state government to court last year over the ban, which also included the knife-like 'Kirpan'. She claimed that the ban was discriminatory.

As per an Australian Broadcasting Corporation report, the Queensland Supreme Court ruled that "the ban is unconstitutional under the Racial Discrimination Act (RDA)."

While the initial court ruling had dismissed the claim that the law was discriminatory, the Thursday ruling found that "Carrying a kirpan as a symbol of a religious commitment would, at least ordinarily, constitute a use of the knife for a lawful purpose—namely, religious observance."

"To say that both Sikhs and non-Sikhs cannot practise their religion while wearing a knife ignores the fact that carrying a knife is only a feature of the religious observance of Sikhs."

As per news agency PTI, Bill Potts, of Potts Lawyers Queensland, said that the original legislation meant Sikhs "were not able to go to school, not able to go to effectively carry out their religion".

The overturning of the law gives freedom back to those practising the faith and is a "great step forward,"&nbsp;said Potts, adding, "This just simply means that they have the same freedoms that everybody else has and are not discriminated against by the state legislation."

<h2>What is a Kirpan?</h2>

A Kirpan is one of the five religious symbols that a practising Sikh is supposed to carry on their person at all times, as part of their faith. The other four religious symbols are Kes (hair), Karha (a steel wristband), Kangha (a wooden comb worn in a hair knot), Kaccherha (shorts or underwear).

Kirpan, the religious symbol which resembles a knife or a short sword, is part of the Sikh religious uniform and is prescribed by the religion's code of conduct. It is typically worn, sheathed and concealed beneath one's clothes.&nbsp;

Australia: Queensland Supreme Court overturns ban on carrying Sikh religious symbol 'Kirpan' in schools

China’s Ministry of Commerce said on Friday (August 4) that it will start dropping import restrictions on Australian barley from Saturday.&nbsp;

Anti-dumping and anti-subsidy tariffs on Australian barley were in place for the last three years, reported Reuters. The restrictions affected bilateral trade worth billions of dollars.

Earlier in April, both nations agreed to resolve their bilateral trade disputes, under which Canberra dropped a WTO case against Beijing while China agreed to review its import restrictions on Australian goods.&nbsp;

Apart from barley, there are a few remaining Australian goods, including wine, which still face heavy import duties in China.

"We have been clear that we expect a similar process to be followed to remove the duties on Australian wine," three Australian ministers said in a joint statement.

<h2>Experts also raise concerns</h2>

Experts say the decision by China would yield exciting results for the Australian barley market, as farmers expected more revenue but warn that farmers with malt-quality barley were likely to attract a premium over the risks involved.

"Market players who are going to be shipping barley to China may ask for a premium due to risks involved as there are going to be some concerns, if for example, China goes back on its decision," Rabobank senior grains analyst Dennis Voznesenski was quoted as saying by Reuters.

Grain Producers Australia CEO Colin Bettles appreciated the move, calling it a win for Chinese consumers and industry as well as local exporters.

<h2>Recent timeline of the Australia-China ties</h2>

The relationship between Australia and its largest trade partner China took a turn for the worse in 2020. It started with Australia's decision to initiate an inquiry into the origins of the COVID-19 virus, a move that Beijing perceived as provocative.

In response to Australia's call for an investigation, China enacted a series of retaliatory actions, including the imposition of anti-dumping duties on Australian wine and barley.

One of the notable measures taken by Beijing was the implementation of substantial tariffs, amounting to a staggering 80.5 per cent on Australian barley in May 2020.&nbsp;

In the face of these developments, Australia responded by formally lodging a complaint with the World Trade Organization (WTO) in December of the same year.&nbsp;

Nearly a week after an Australian military helicopter crashed in Queensland, unidentified human remains of the four crew members have been found, the authorities said Thursday (August 3).

The Australian defence force said more debris had been found, including the helicopter's cockpit, about 40 metres underwater.&nbsp;&nbsp;

“The debris field is consistent with a catastrophic, high impact,”&nbsp;Lt Gen Greg Bilton, the chief of joint operations said.&nbsp;

In what is being described as the worst cases of sex crimes against children in Australian history, a former childcare worker, on Tuesday (August 1) was charged with over 1,600 child sexual abuse offences, including rape, of 91 young girls. The 45-year-old man worked at nearly a dozen childcare centres in Brisbane, Sydney and overseas over a 15-year period.

<h2>About the case</h2>

The Australian Federal Police (AFP) said that the 45-year-old, childcare worker, who was employed at a dozen childcare centres between 2007 and 2022, was arrested in August last year after they discovered electronic devices with child abuse material of young girls while executing warrants at his home and other addresses.&nbsp;

Queensland police first located the alleged child abuse images and videos on the dark web in 2014. This led to a years-long joint investigation by the AFP, Queensland Police Service (QPS) and New South Wales Police Force (NSWPF).&nbsp;

Initially, the material found in 2014 was posted on an international victim identification database by the AFP but the officials received no leads.

It was not until 2022, that investigators were able to trace identifiable features in the background of a video to a Brisbane childcare centre, which was followed by inquiries at the centre in question.

During the search of the man’s Gold Coast home, the police also found devices supposedly containing nearly 4,000 images and videos allegedly shot by the man. The AFP executed a search warrant and arrested the man in Brisbane’s south-western suburbs.&nbsp;

<h2>Where and when?</h2>

According to the Australian police, the alleged offences took place in 10 childcare centres in Brisbane between 2007 to 2013, and 2018 to 2022; an overseas location in 2013 and 2014; and one centre in Sydney between 2014 and 2017.&nbsp;

While the accused, a Gold Coast native, has worked in other childcare centres, AFP could not immediately confirm the allegations at those locations.

<h2>Allegations against the man
&nbsp;</h2>

Speaking about the case, AFP assistant commissioner Justine Gough called the alleged offences “deeply distressing” and “unfathomable”. The charges, on Tuesday, were brought by law enforcement officials after a decades-long investigation.&nbsp;

The 45-year-old man – who police said passed background checks required for his job at all the centres and has childcare qualifications – committed sex crime offences against 91 girls, some&nbsp;as young as one year old.&nbsp;

The police also believe that he recorded himself with phones and cameras abusing all his victims. After the material was discovered, much of the subsequent investigation focused on identifying the alleged victims, said the AFP.&nbsp;

The law enforcement officials have been able to identify all 87 Australian children of the 91 victims, all of whom are from New South Wales (NSW) or Queensland, and have informed their parents.&nbsp;

QPS acting assistant commissioner Col Briggs, during the press conference, said an “extensive examination was launched to identify the children in the pictures” as soon as police were made aware of them.

However, four children remain unidentified and they are working with the international authorities on the alleged abuse by the man overseas.&nbsp;

“This is one of the most horrific child abuse cases that I’ve seen in nearly 40 years of policing,” said NSW state police assistant commissioner Michael Fitzgerald.&nbsp;

He added, “It’s beyond the realms of anyone’s imagination what this person did to these children.”

<h2>Charges against the accused</h2>

The 45-year-old has been charged with 1,623 child abuse charges, including 136 counts of rape and 110 counts of sexual intercourse with a child under 10, alleged to have taken place in Brisbane, Sydney and overseas between 2007 and 2022.&nbsp;

<h2>Operation Tenterfield&nbsp;</h2>

Operation Tenterfield, in part focussed on identifying the children in the alleged child abuse material recorded at childcare centres began in August 2022 with 35 members, said Gough, adding that it had been “complex” and required “highly skilled victim identification specialists”.&nbsp;

In September, last year, AFP coordinated a joint agency task force with the QPS at the Australian Centre to Counter Child Exploitation to review nearly 4,000 images and videos the man had allegedly created.&nbsp;

“Given there were so many alleged images and videos of children recorded over 15 years on the alleged offender’s devices, the process of identification took time, skill and determination,” said Gough.&nbsp;

He added, “While I am extremely proud of law enforcement’s persistence and their unwavering dedication to identify this alleged offender, and stop further abuse, this is chilling news.”

<h2>What now?</h2>

Some of the alleged victims are now over 18. The man, who has not been named, is scheduled to face Brisbane Magistrates Court on August 21.&nbsp;

Fitzgerald said the man would also face&nbsp;180&nbsp;child sex abuse charges against 23 victims aged one to five&nbsp;in NSW.&nbsp;“Once this man faces the AFP charges in Queensland, we will be seeking to extradite him to Sydney to face the full force of the law in NSW,” said state police assistant commissioner.&nbsp;

He also said that the NSW police has decided that it would not call a single victim witness to prosecute the case to save them from being re-traumatised.

A UNESCO heritage committee of scientific advisors has recommended that Australia's Great Barrier Reef be not placed on a list of world heritage sites that are in "danger".

A UNESCO heritage committee of scientific advisors has recommended that Australia's Great Barrier Reef be not placed on a list of world heritage sites that are in "danger". The committee, however, stressed that the 2,300-kilometre (1,243-mile) network of corals, the biggest in the world, remains under 'serious threat' from global heating and water pollution. The committee's decision might come as a relief for Australia which has been lobbying for years to keep the reef off the endangered list as it could lead to losing its heritage status - thereby heavily affecting the tourism business. Notably, the reef contributes over $4 billion to the Australian economy and supports some 64,000 jobs. Prior to COVID-19, over two million tourists visited the reef, located off Australia's northeast coast every year. PM Albanese acknowledges more need to be done "The draft decision cites 'significant progress' being made on climate change, water quality, and sustainable fishing – all putting the reef on a stronger and more sustainable path," said Prime Minister Anthony Albanese, reflecting on UNESCO's decision. Albanese, however, acknowledged that the decision did not put the reef or its future "in the clear". Albanese, who leads the centre-left Labor government in Canberra, said more steps were needed to maintain the status quo. His government has already pledged over $800 million to protect the reef, withdrawn funding for dams and denied permission to a coal mine that could have potentially affected the reef's water quality. It was last year in November that UNESCO suggested that the reef should be put on the danger list after frequent incidents of coral bleaching. Bleaching happens when the water warms too much, causing corals to expel the colourful algae living in their tissues and turn white. Also read | Fish in Australia's Great Barrier Reef are 'fading' in colour Experts argue that the olive branch extended by the UN committee is an opportunity for Australia to step up and perform its duty to save the reef. "UNESCO has kept the Australian and Queensland governments on probation. There's an opportunity for Australia to lift its game before it is required to provide a progress report...next year," said WWF-Australia Head of Oceans Richard Leck. 'Beyond anyone's imaginations...': Australian childcare worker charged with 1,623 child abuse offences

An Australian senate committee after investigating how foreign powers could use social media to interfere in the country has recommended a number of rules and restrictions for several platforms, including imposing a ban on Chinese messaging WeChat, on Tuesday (August 1). Months back, the Australian government said it would remove TikTok from all federal government-owned devices over security concerns.&nbsp;

<h2>Committee’s recommendation</h2>

The report released on Tuesday, along with a ban on WeChat, also consists of 17 other recommendations, including new transparency rules enforceable by fines.&nbsp;

The five-people committee led by Liberal Party Senator and shadow cyber security minister, James Paterson, also called for the ban on TikTok from federal government devices in Canberra to be extended to the devices of government contractors who also have access to Australian government data. This extended ban should also cover WeChat, according to the report.&nbsp;

Lawmakers have said they had been “particularly concerned” with the “unique national security risks” posed by companies like TikTok and WeChat “whose parent companies ByteDance and Tencent respectively, are irrefutably headquartered in and run from authoritarian countries like China”.

It also recommends the government should enforce a set of transparency rules for social media platforms which include, having an Australian presence,&nbsp;labelling state-affiliated media,&nbsp;disclosing content censorship,&nbsp;actions against accounts of elected officials, and government directions about content on their platforms.

If the social media platforms fail to meet the minimum transparency requirements or to abide by the rules, the companies should be fined and banned, as a last resort, at the discretion of the home affairs minister.

The committee also recommended that if the United States government forced ByteDance to divest its stake in TikTok, then the Australian government should also consider similar steps and ensure TikTok Australia is also separated from its China-based parent company.

Paterson told the Senate on Tuesday, how the health of social media networks directly affects the health of the country and foreign “authoritarian states know this”. The committee also recommended that Canberra help developing countries in the Indo-Pacific resist “malicious information operations” by authoritarian states.

“They (authoritarian states) do not permit free debate on their own social media platforms. They use ours as a vector for information operations to shape our decision-making in their national interest – at the expense of our own,” said Paterson, as quoted by The Guardian.&nbsp;

He also said that not all social media platforms are the same since the ability for a social media platform to be “weaponised” varies depending on the laws of the country where it is headquartered.

<h2>WeChat banned on certain Australian government devices</h2>

A report by Guardian Australia, back in April confirmed that the Chinese messaging app was banned in nearly a dozen federal departments, including the department of prime minister and cabinet, the department of foreign affairs and trade and so on.&nbsp;

The latest recommendations also did not face any pushback from the opposition Labor and the Greens parties but noted that while they were in favour of the proposed transparency framework a nationwide ban on certain apps would not be effective.&nbsp;

<h2>TikTok’s response to the report</h2>

Ella Woods-Joyce, TikTok’s director of public policy for Australia and New Zealand, said that while the company disagrees with some of the characterisations and statements about the Chinese video app, it welcomed that there was a nationwide ban recommended.&nbsp;

“We are also encouraged that recommendations largely appear to apply equally to all platforms,” said Woods-Joyce, on Tuesday, as quoted by The Guardian.&nbsp;

Former Australia skipper Ricky Ponting blasted the Aussie bowlers for not being able to capitalise with the new ball and letting England put pressure on them. Ponting's comment came at lunch on day 3 after England's opening batsmen made small work of the 12-run deficit.

"Australia have been a bit all over the place, to be honest. I think what it has highlighted throughout the series is when you've got the new ball in hand, you'd better be ready to start and bowl your best delivery. If you don't - as we saw today - there is a boundary off the first ball, then 13 off the first over and the pressure is suddenly on the bowlers. That's what England are trying to do and create. Australia haven't been ready," Ponting said.

England opener Zak Crawley in particular was severe on visiting bowlers as he hit another fifty in the series. During the commentary, former England skipper Nasser Hussain also took a cheeky dig at Ponting, saying the latter is about to just explode.&nbsp;

“I think Ricky Ponting is just about to explode,” Hussain laughed. “Everyone in world cricket knows where to bowl to Zak Crawley … you bowl fifth stump, back of a length. They bowled on his pads, they bowled both sides of the wicket. They got it wrong and now they’re playing catch-up cricket. You can have as many theories as you want, but you’ve got to bowl better,” added Hussain.

England, after bowling Australia out for 295 in the first innings, raced away to 389/9 in their second innings, thanks to fifties from Crawley (73), Joe Root (91) and Jonny Bairstow (78). Apart from them, Crawley's opening partner Ben Duckett and skipper Ben Stokes also scored 42 each as the home team scored runs at about five per over.

Australia, who currently lead five-Test series 2-1 and are looking to win their first Ashes in England in two decades, will have to bat out of their skin to win the Test and series over the last two days of the match.

During the commentary, former England skipper Nasser Hussain also took a cheeky dig at Ponting, saying the latter is about to just explode. Ashes 2023: Former skipper Ricky Ponting blasts Australian bowlers for 'not being ready' with new ball

The United States will help Australia to produce guided multiple-launch rocket systems by 2025, said the American Defense Secretary Lloyd Austin, on Saturday (July 29). The statement comes after the two-day Canberra-Washington meeting which focused on regional security and military cooperation where the officials also pledged to engage with China but also oppose it if needed.

<h2>US-Australia meetings in Brisbane</h2>

Austin and US Secretary of State Antony Blinken are in the Australian state of Queensland for the annual Australia-US ministerial dialogue (AUSMIN), with their Australian counterparts Defence Minister Richard Marles and Foreign Minister Penny Wong.&nbsp;

“We are pursuing several mutually beneficial initiatives with Australia's defence industry, and these include a commitment to help Australia produce guided multiple launch rocket systems...by 2025,” said Austin, during a press conference.&nbsp;

He added that Washington is also accelerating Canberra’s priority munitions through a streamlined acquisition process.&nbsp;

Similarly, Marles also said that Australia “hopes to see manufacturing of missiles commenced in Australia in two years’ time”. He added, “We are really pleased with the steps that we are taking in respect of establishing a guided weapons and explosive ordnance enterprise in this country.”&nbsp;

In line with this project, Australia will develop guided multiple-launch rocket systems, or GMLRS which the Pentagon chief said would help the US “sharpen our technological edge and strengthen our defence industrial base”.

This comes as Washington will help Canberra build a fledgling domestic missile industry nearly from the ground up while also securing a reliable pipeline for its own armed forces down the track.&nbsp;

There would also be an “increased tempo of visits from American nuclear-powered submarines to our waters” as a part of the agreement, said the Australian defence minister.&nbsp;

This also comes months after the two countries signed the AUKUS security treaty, a landmark military pact where Australia will develop its own nuclear-powered submarines, the progress of which was also discussed during the meetings that concluded on Saturday.

<h2>US about China and the Indo-Pacific</h2>

Meanwhile, Blinken spoke about how the “chief” among the high-profile talks with Australia was a shared commitment to a free and secure Indo-Pacific region.&nbsp;

“We’re doing that in part by engaging China, but also as necessary opposing its efforts to disrupt freedom of navigation overflight in the south and east China seas, to upend the status quo that’s preserved peace and stability across the Taiwan Straits, to pressure countries through economic coercion,” said Washington’s top diplomat.&nbsp;

After the two-day talks in Brisbane, Marles and Austin were set to travel to north Queensland for the Talisman Sabre war games where Australian and US military along with 11 other nations were to take part.&nbsp;

However, they have since been put on hold after an Australian military helicopter participating in the exercises <a href="https://www.wionews.com/world/queensland-military-helicopter-crash-four-missing-after-incident-620437">crashed into the ocean</a>, with at least four people onboard feared dead.

<h2>Washington-Canberra cooperation with India</h2>

The two countries also reaffirmed their commitment to enhance interoperability between the militaries of the Pacific through a range of exercises and welcomed Fiji, Indonesia, Papua New Guinea, and Tonga’s participation in the Talisman Sabre exercise for the first time.&nbsp;

Meanwhile, India, Singapore, Thailand, and the Philippines were also invited as inaugural observers, reported the Indian media, citing a fact sheet released by the US Department of Defence.&nbsp;

US will help Australia develop guided missiles by 2025; cooperate with India for Indo-Pacific security

The Australian Defence Force (ADF) helicopter crash off the coast of Queensland on Saturday left at least four persons presumed dead, according to the defence minister. The chopper was participating in the twice-yearly Talisman Sabre military drills between the United States and Australia.

Australia: Four feared dead following military helicopter crash

A military helicopter reportedly went down in the ocean off Hamilton Island. The crash occurred around 11 pm while the aircraft,&nbsp;carrying four individuals, was engaged in exercises with the Australian and US military.

Police said later that the debris from downed Australian military helicopter was later found.

The helicopter was partaking in Exercise Talisman Sabre. Recovery efforts have commenced, but it remains unclear whether the helicopter belonged to the Australian or American forces.

"As we speak to you now, the four aircrew are yet to be found," Defence Minister Richard Marles said after a nearly 12 hour overnight search, which is set to continue Saturday.

"The families of the four aircrew have been notified of this incident and our hopes and thoughts are very much with the aircrew and their families," he added.

<h2>Defence officials halt joint exercise involving international troops</h2>

Defence authorities declared a temporary halt to the Talisman Sabre exercise, involving troops from Japan, France, Germany, and South Korea. The exercise, spanning two weeks, aimed to assess extensive logistics, land combat, amphibious landings, and air operations. Concurrently, Australia is undertaking a substantial restructuring of its military forces, focusing on enhancing long-range strike capabilities to maintain distance from potential adversaries like China.

The current situation regarding casualties or injuries remains uncertain. Defence Minister Richard Marles and Chief of Defence Force Angus Campbell are expected to hold a media briefing at 8:30 am.

Nigeria produced the first major shock of the Women's World Cup as they stunned Australia 3-2 on Thursday to leave the co-hosts' tournament hopes on thin ice. Asisat Oshoala volleyed into an open goal in the 72nd minute to seal a deserved win for the Africans after Uchenna Kanu cancelled out Emily van Egmond's opener on the cusp of halftime and Osinachi Ohale nudged Nigeria ahead after the break.

Australia cut the deficit to one goal when Alanna Kennedy nodded home a header in the 10th minute of stoppage time but Nigeria rode out the final seconds to claim one of their finest wins in their ninth appearance at the global showpiece. The win in front of a huge crowd at Lang Park put Nigeria top of Group B level with Canada on four points but ahead on goal difference. The 11-time African champions play eliminated Ireland in their last group match.

Women's World Cup: MAJOR UPSET! Nigeria stun event co-hosts Australia 3-2

The behaviour of a large pod of nearly 100 long-finned pilot whales has baffled scientists. The whales were seen forming a heart shape before tragically stranding themselves on a remote beach in Western Australia (WA).&nbsp;

Drone footage captured this rare phenomenon as the whales tightly grouped together at Cheynes Beach, about 60&nbsp;km east of Albany before the tragic incident unfolded on Tuesday evening.&nbsp;

By the next morning, over 50 of the majestic creatures lay lifeless on the shore, leaving volunteers, government workers, and scientists scrambling to rescue the remaining 46.

<h2>"Unique" images</h2>

Reece Whitby, WA's environment minister, shared that researchers across Australia were baffled when they witnessed the unprecedented behaviour of the pod before the stranding. He called the images "unique" and said, "It is pretty incredible from a scientific basis in terms of learning about strandings."&nbsp;

Whitby said that the Department of Biodiversity Conservation and Attractions sought advice from other jurisdictions that had experienced similar events, but the consensus was "We have never seen this before."

Scientists baffled as pilot whales form a 'heart' before mass stranding in Australia

Travellers in Hong Kong's airport voiced support for <a href="https://www.wionews.com/world/hong-kong-leader-says-rule-of-law-being-damaged-citys-recovery-will-take-long-time-242574">pro-democracy demonstrators</a> on Tuesday, despite an overnight occupation of the international transit hub that saw tens of thousands of passengers stranded.

The airport, one of the busiest in the world, reopened on Tuesday morning but <a href="https://www.wionews.com/world/hong-kong-protest-us-urges-all-sides-to-refrain-from-violence-flight-operations-resume-after-unprecedented-closure-242560">hundreds of flights remained cancelled </a>and several hundred protesters returned for a fresh rally on Tuesday afternoon.

Monday's abrupt closure came 10 weeks into a crisis that has seen millions of people take to Hong Kong's streets in the biggest challenge to Chinese rule of the semi-autonomous city since its 1997 handover from Britain.

"It may affect me, but I still know what they are doing and I support them so it doesn't matter, said 27-year-old advertising worker Mag Mak, whose flight back home to Hong Kong from Dubai was delayed by five hours.

"I think the government is so rubbish and they don't have any response to the protesters," she added.

Frank Filser, 53, was struggling to reschedule a flight back to Germany to visit his father who has terminal cancer.

But he said he sympathised with the protesters despite the disruption.

"They fight for Hong Kong and that's their view," he said.

"Anytime I can go back to Germany, but what about the people who grew up here? This is their home."

Real estate worker Tibor, a long-term foreign resident of Hong Kong, was waiting at the terminal for a rescheduled flight after his journey on Monday was cancelled.&nbsp;

He said he understood the protests because "it's really frustrating to live in a society where your government is not really having a dialogue with their own people".

A wide cross-section of Hong Kong has taken to the streets in recent weeks to show their support for the pro-democracy movement and condemn the police response to protests, including rallies of elderly residents and civil servants.

But the movement has divided parts of the city, with small demonstrations in support of police and the government, and scuffles breaking out between pro-Beijing residents and protesters in some neighbourhoods.

Some passengers at the airport took a less forgiving view of the occupation.

The nationalistic Chinese tabloid the Global Times tweeted footage of one irate Australian passenger who confronted young demonstrators and told them to "go get a job".&nbsp;

Others told AFP they were angry at having their travel plans frustrated.

"I don't mind what they [the protesters] do but they made us five hours delayed," said 50-year-old Wing Au-Yeung, who had stopped off in the city to collect his aged mother before travelling to South Korea with his family.&nbsp;

In a momentous event, the world's largest release of baby seahorses into the wild took place in Sydney Harbour. The feat involved approximately 380 juvenile White seahorses that were carefully bred and nurtured in captivity.

The conservation operation was carried out by Sydney Institute of Marine Science.

<h2>When were seahorses released?&nbsp;&nbsp;</h2>

The seahorses were released at the Chowder Bay in Mosman on Tuesday, July 21.

The release was organised&nbsp;with the seahorses finding refuge in swimming nets and specially designed artificial habitats known as "seahorse hotels".&nbsp;

These structures, adorned with algae and sponges, were strategically chosen to provide the seahorses with the best chances of survival.

<h2>The Sydney Seahorse Project</h2>

The Sydney Seahorse Project came into being when the White's Seahorse species was officially recognised as the world's second endangered seahorse species in 2020.

The decline of these seahorses has been mainly attributed to the loss of their natural habitats, including sea grasses, soft corals, and algae along Australia's eastern coast.

The devastating effects of this loss were evident as once-thriving populations, like those in Port Stephens on the New South Wales mid-north coast, witnessed a drastic decline of 95 per cent or more in recent years.

<h2>Effort to save seahorses in Australia</h2>

The team members of the Sydney Seahorse Project, collected three pregnant male White's seahorses in January earlier this year. These seahorses found safety within the Sydney Institute of Marine Science aquarium, where they gave birth to the precious seahorse fry that were joyously released into Sydney Harbour.

Australia: Mesmerising seahorses released into 'seahorse hotels'

A large mysterious object that was found on a remote West Australian beach - initially thought by many to be a rocket debris from India's recent moon mission Chandrayaan-3 - has now been moved to a secret location. The origins of this object still remain unknown, however, it is widely believed to be debris from a space vehicle. India's space agency ISRO had earlier denied that it had any links to the object.

The Australian Space Agency said the cylindrical golden-coloured object is most likely a solid rocket motor casing, The Guardian reported.

<h2>Discovery of 'space object' on Australian beach</h2>

The 2.5 metres-tall object was found near Green Head, some 250 kilometres north of Perth on Saturday.

Initial theories suggested that it could be a part of a downed airliner. Police had placed a guarded cordon around the object due to fears of a potential public health risk.

On Wednesday, in a statement, the Australian police said that "Contrary to speculation, there is no evidence to support the theory that the object is connected in any way to a commercial aircraft."

"After extensive consultation with state and national agencies with expertise in maritime, aviation, defence and space industries, it is believed the object is related to a rocket system," they added.

<h2>What is the object exactly?</h2>

Experts are still working to identify the origins of the mysterious object. Reportedly, the Australian Space Agency has now taken over the task of identifying the object's origins.

"Due to the initial assessment of the object indicating it was space industry related, and could potentially be space debris, additional precautions were taken to ensure the object posed no danger to the community," said a police spokesman.

"All necessary measures have been taken to mitigate any potential hazards and the object is now safely contained and stored while the Australian Space Agency works to confirm its origin."

The Space Agency has speculated that it might be part of a foreign space vehicle.

Taking to Twitter, the agency said: "We are currently making enquiries related to this object located on a beach near Jurien Bay in Western Australia."

"The object could be from a foreign space launch vehicle and we are liaising with global counterparts who may be able to provide more information."

On social media too, netizens were quick to reach conclusions, with many drawing comparisons of the objects' appearance with the fuel cylinder that could have come from the third stage of India's Polar Satellite Launch Vehicle rocket (LVM3-M4 rocket) or the recently launched Chandrayaan-3.

While the debris has been confirmed as part of a rocket, the Indian Space Research Organisation (ISRO) chief, S Somanath, clarified that it cannot be definitively identified as Indian without further analysis. "We can't confirm it's ours unless we analyse it," S Somanath told BBC.

Mysterious object on Australia beach sent to secret location; India says no link to its space launch

The Australian state of Victoria pulled out of hosting the 2026 Commonwealth Games on Tuesday citing major cost blow-outs, leaving organisers "hugely disappointed" and scrambling to keep the multi-sport event alive. State Premier Daniel Andrews said the initial estimate of Aus$2 billion (US$1.36 billion) needed to hold the Games would more likely be around Aus$7 billion, which he called "well and truly too much".

"I've made a lot of difficult calls, a lot of very difficult decisions in this job. This is not one of them. Frankly, $7 billion for a sporting event, we are not doing that," he said at a news conference in Melbourne. "I will not take money out of hospitals and schools to host an event that is three times the cost estimated and budgeted for last year.

"The Games will not proceed in Victoria in 2026. We have informed Commonwealth Games authorities of our decision to seek to terminate the contract."

The decision to pull the pin throws a question mark over not just the 2026 event but the concept as a whole, analysts said, with fewer countries showing interest in recent times to take on a spectacle seen as losing its relevance.

The last Games in 2022 were held in Birmingham, but only after the English city stepped in to replace Durban in South Africa, which was stripped of hosting rights after a series of missed deadlines and financial problems.

The Commonwealth Games Federation insisted it remained "committed to finding a solution for the Games in 2026".

The event typically attracts more than 4,000 athletes from the 54 nations of the Commonwealth, almost all of them former territories of the British Empire.

The 2026 version -- featuring 20 sports and 26 disciplines -- was due to be held across five regional hubs, including Geelong, Ballarat, Bendigo, Gippsland and Shepparton, with each having its own athletes' village.

Andrews said his team had looked at cutting the number of hubs or even moving the Games to the Victoria state capital Melbourne but "none of those options stack up".

<h2>- 'Gross exaggeration' -</h2>

He refused to say how much it cost to terminate the agreement but insisted talks with the Commonwealth Games Federation were amicable.

However, the London-based Federation blasted the move as "hugely disappointing".

"We are disappointed that we were only given eight hours' notice and that no consideration was given to discussing the situation to jointly find solutions prior to this decision being reached by the government," it said in a statement.

A spokesman for British Prime Minister Rishi Sunak lamented a "disappointing outcome for both fans and athletes", but said talk of Britain stepping in to stage the event was "getting slightly ahead of ourselves".

"We hope that the Victoria state government, the Games federation and Commonwealth Games Australia will now work together to find a viable solution to hosting the event in 2026," the spokesman said.

Pressed on the possibility of a British bid, he added: "Obviously the UK has been honoured to host the Games twice in the past decade (Birmingham 2022 and Glasgow 2014) so we will see what comes out of those initial discussions."

CGF chief executive Katie Sadlier told Britain's Press Association: "The UK are fantastic hosts and we would be very open to having a conversation with them about it, if that's something they would be interested in doing."

Victoria was only awarded the contract 14 months ago as the exclusive bidder, with the Federation claiming the state had decided to include more sports, added an additional regional hub, and changed plans for venues.

These additional costs were "often against the advice of the Commonwealth Games Federation and Commonwealth Games Australia", it said, adding that it had received assurances that "sufficient funding was available to deliver the Victoria 2026 Commonwealth Games".

Commonwealth Games Australia president Ben Houston was equally scathing, claiming the new cost estimates were a "gross exaggeration".

But Tom Heenan, a lecturer in sport and Australian studies at Monash University, said it showed that hosting mega-events like the Commonwealth Games was not worth it.

"This venture was flawed from the start," he said. "Situating the Games in regional centres highlighted their declining global importance."

The Australian city of Brisbane in the state of Queensland will host the 2032 Summer Olympics.

Commonwealth Games in limbo as Australian state Victoria pulls out as 2026 host

England's Stuart Broad became just the fifth bowler to take 600 Test wickets, as Australia ended Wednesday's opening day of the fourth Test at Old Trafford on 299-8.

Marnus Labuschagne and Mitchell Marsh each made 51 after England captain Ben Stokes won the toss in a match the hosts must win to maintain their hopes of regaining the Ashes at 2-1 down with two to play.

Chris Woakes led England's pace attack with 4-52 in 18.5 overs while Broad took 2-68 in 14 en route to his landmark.

James Anderson was the only change to the England side that won the third Test at Headingley by three wickets.&nbsp;

On his Lancashire home ground a fortnight short of his 41st birthday, Anderson had a frustrating day.

England's all-time leading Test bowler with 688 wickets, had figures of 0-43 in 17 overs.

History is against England. No side has won a Test at Old Trafford after winning the toss and bowling.

Broad was aiming to heap further misery on David Warner, having already dismissed the Australia opener 17 times in Tests -- including twice for a total of just five runs at Headingley.

But from Wednesday's first ball, Warner thrashed a wide delivery from Broad for four.

Broad, however, moved to 599 Test wickets when he had Usman Khawaja, Australia's other opener, lbw for three.

<h2>Woakes strikes&nbsp;</h2>

Woakes struck next to end a second-wicket stand of 46 when he had Warner caught behind off an edged drive, following an assured 32.

The next delivery saw star batsman Steve Smith top-edge a pull off Woakes that just cleared Mark Wood at fine leg before going for four.

An increasingly confident Smith drove off-spinner Moeen Ali for a straight six.

Having made 41, on a ground where four years ago his double century helped seal a 185-run win over England, Smith was lbw to express quick Wood.

Head was struck on the helmet by a Wood bouncer early in his innings and again looked uncomfortable against the short ball.

But he battled through. Both Head and Labuschagne unfurled several fine drives.

Labuschagne, however, fell one ball after completing his fifty, lbw to Moeen -- the only specialist spinner on either side after Australia dropped Todd Murphy.

Australia were 187-4 at tea only to lose Head five balls after the resumption as Broad took his 600th Test wicket.

Left-hander Head had made 48 when he hooked at a Broad bouncer and Joe Root held a low catch as he ran in from the boundary at fine leg.

Marsh, who had marked his first Test since 2019 with a hundred at Headingley, again drove strongly and made England pay for any loose deliveries as he led the way during a partnership of 65 with fellow all-rounder Cameron Green.

Their stand was broken when the recalled Green was lbw to Woakes.

Australia's 254-6 became 255-7 when Jonny Bairstow, whose wicketkeeping has proved fallible this series, held a one-handed diving catch to remove Marsh from an outside edge off Woakes.&nbsp;

The crowd roared in celebration as Marsh departed after hitting seven fours and a six in a quickfire stay of 60 balls.

Alex Carey&nbsp;almost made it through to stumps but fell to the new ball, caught behind off Woakes trying to withdraw his bat.&nbsp;

Mitchell Starc was 23 not out at the close.

England have won 13 of their last 16 Tests at Old Trafford but have not enjoyed an Ashes victory at the Manchester ground since Ian Botham hit a celebrated hundred in 1981.

Honours even in fourth Ashes Test as Broad joins 600 club

Speculation and curiosity have surrounded a giant metal dome that washed up on Green Head Beach in Australia, approximately 250 kilometres&nbsp;north of Perth.

The object, resembling a cylindrical wreckage measuring around 2.5 metres in width and between 2.5&nbsp;metres&nbsp;and 3&nbsp;metres&nbsp;in length, has triggered a wave of excitement among the local residents.

While the debris has been confirmed as part of a rocket, the Indian Space Research Organisation (ISRO) chief, S Somanath, clarified that it cannot be definitively identified as Indian without further analysis.&nbsp;

"We can't confirm it's ours unless we analyse it," S Somanath told BBC.

<h2>Debunking initial speculations</h2>

Initially, there were suggestions that the <a href="https://www.wionews.com/trending/part-of-indian-rocket-mysterious-cylinder-washes-up-on-australian-beach-616535">mysterious object might be linked to India's recent Moon mission launch</a>. However, experts promptly dismissed this possibility, ruling out any connection to the country's latest space endeavours.

According to Somanath, ISRO cannot conclusively declare ownership of the metal dome until a thorough analysis is conducted. Determining its origin and affiliation will require careful examination and evaluation by experts in the field. Speculation and curiosity have surrounded a giant metal dome that washed up on Green Head Beach in Australia, approximately 250 kilometres north of Perth. The object, resembling a cylindrical wreckage measuring around 2.5 metres in width and between 2.5 metres and 3 metres in length, has triggered a wave of excitement among the local residents. While the debris has been confirmed as part of a rocket, the Indian Space Research Organisation (ISRO) chief, S Somanath, clarified that it cannot be definitively identified as Indian without further analysis. "We can't confirm it's ours unless we analyse it," S Somanath told BBC. Debunking initial speculations Initially, there were suggestions that the mysterious object might be linked to India's recent Moon mission launch. The outcome of this analysis will shed light on whether the wreckage is indeed Indian. Indian link 'uncertain': ISRO chief dispels rumours over rocket debris found on Australian beach

An Australian sailor who was rescued with his dog after more than two months unanchored in the Pacific Ocean arrived in Mexico on Tuesday. "I am so grateful. I'm alive," he said.

Tim Shaddock, who survived on raw fish and rainwater for weeks on his boat with dog 'Bella', was rescued by a tuna vessel.

He&nbsp;arrived at the Mexican port of Manzanillo on Tuesday, looking thin and feeble.

"To the captain and this fishing company that saved my life, I mean, what do you say? I'm just so grateful," news agency AFP quoted Shaddock as saying.

"I'm alive... I really didn't think I'd make it, you know? So thank you, thank you so much."&nbsp;

Shaddock, who as per Grupomar is 54 years old, had set off from Mexico's seaside city of La Paz in the month of April with his dog. He had planned to sail about 6,000 kilometres (3,700 miles) before dropping anchor in tropical French Polynesia.

But soon after they set off, they found themselves deserted after rough seas destroyed the vessel, which he described as a French Polynesian traditional boat named "Aloha Toa," and knocked out its electronics.

On Tuesday, Shaddock told reporters he was "feeling alright. A little better than I was."

He said his health was "pretty bad for a while, I was pretty hungry."&nbsp;

On being asked by reporters, Shaddock said that he did a lot of fishing during the voyage, especially after his provisions ran out.

However, he lost his cooking utensils, "so it was a lot of chewing of 'sushi'," he jokingly remarked and indicated how "skinny" he had become.

Shaddock recounted there were "many, many, many bad days" at sea, but also good ones.

"The fatigue is the hardest part, you're always fixing something," he said of the ordeal.

"I would try and find the happiness inside myself, and I found that a lot alone at sea. I would go in the water too, and just enjoy being in the water."

<h2>Shaddock praises&nbsp;dog Bella</h2>

Shaddock appreciated his dog Bella, who he said he had found in Mexico.

"She just kept following me onto the water," he said of adopting the dog after several failed attempts to get her another home.

"She's amazing. That dog is something else," he laughed. "I'm just grateful she's alive. She is a lot braver than I am."

He then said he was looking forward to meeting his family and friends and getting back to his home safely.

He would "probably not" head out to sea again in the near future, he admitted.

"I'll always be in the water," he said, though "I don't know how far out in the ocean I'll be."

For Grupomar boss Antonio Suarez, the rescue was proof that 'life is beautiful'.

"We were responsible for saving the life of a human being and the little dog that accompanied him," he told reporters.

"We have medical services on our vessels. He fell into good hands."
