In shocking medical case, doctors were stunned to find a live worm, approximately 8cm long, inside a woman's brain. The worm's presence, possibly for up to two months, raises concerns about the transmission of infections from animals to humans.

Australia doctors make shocking discovery, find living worm inside woman's brain

A worm has been found living in a woman’s brain in Australia. It is the first case of its kind. The worm measured 8-centimetres long.

Worm found living in Australian woman’s brain in world-first case

Neurosurgeons in Australia have encountered something bizarre when they are treating a patient whose brain lives as a worm and that has been found. In a first a neurosurgeon in Canberra pulled an eight-centimeter-long parasitic roundworm alive from a woman's brain.

Live worm found in Australian woman's brain

In Australia, a medical case has left doctors and neurosurgeons flabbergasted as a 64-year-old woman was found to have a live parasitic roundworm living in her brain. What's more surprising is that the worm, called Ophidascaris robertsi, is usually found in snakes, pythons to be exact, and this is actually the first documented case of it being present in a human.

<h2>'Alive and wriggling'</h2>

In the Canberra hospital, neurosurgeon, Dr Hari Priya Bandi, pulled an 8 cm-long parasitic roundworm out of her patient's brain, prompting her to call her colleagues and exclaim, "Oh my God, you wouldn’t believe what I just found in this lady’s brain – and it’s alive and wriggling."

As per The Guardian, since late 2021, the woman had been suffering from various symptoms, including abdominal pain, diarrhoea, cough, fever, night sweats. More recently, by 2022, she started reporting symptoms like forgetfulness and depression.&nbsp;

Upon conducting an MRI scan, doctors revealed abnormalities in her brain that required surgery.&nbsp;It was during this surgery that neurosurgeons discovered the 8-cm-long roundworm inside her brain.&nbsp;The roundworm, usually found in pythons, had never been reported in humans before.&nbsp;

<h2>How did the roundworm enter her brain?</h2>

The woman, as per The Guardian, lives near an area inhabited by carpet pythons, which are hosts of this worm.

It is believed that she may have come into contact with the parasite through native grasses she collected from around a nearby lake for cooking. It's hypothesised that a python may have shed the parasite via its faeces, which may have contaminated the grass.

Since this was the first such case, the medical team involved in the case had to move carefully, as they suspected that the woman may have larvae. To kill the larvae, they administered medication that could have harmful side effects.&nbsp;

As per the doctors, the patient's recovery has been successful. The case has been documented in the September edition of the journal Emerging Infectious Diseases.

The case has highlighted the potential dangers of diseases and infections transferring from animals to humans. As per Dr Sanjaya Senanayake, there "have been about 30 new infections in the world in the last 30 years."

"This Ophidascaris infection does not transmit between people, so this patient's case won’t cause a pandemic like COVID-19 or Ebola. However, the snake and parasite are found in other parts of the world, so it is likely that other cases will be recognised in coming years in other countries," he added.

Three US Marines have been killed and several others seriously wounded after an Osprey aircraft crashed during military exercises in Australia.

3 US Marines killed in aircraft crash in Australia during training exercise

Australia's defence department said on Sunday (August 27) that a US military aircraft crashed on a remote island north of mainland Australia while it was taking part in war games. US officials have said that three US Marines were killed in the crash while 20 sustained injuries.

"There were a total of 23 personnel on board. Three have been confirmed deceased while five others were transported to Royal Darwin Hospital in a serious condition," a US Marines official said in a statement.

"At this critical early stage, our focus is on the incident response and ensuring the safety of those involved," the Defence Department said in a statement, adding that Australian soldiers were "not involved". &nbsp;

The crashed aircraft is an Osprey vertical takeoff aircraft.&nbsp;

An emergency services incident map for Northern Territory revealed that there was an "aircraft crash" on Melville Island. The island is about 60 kilometres (37 miles) north of mainland Australia.

The aircraft was participating in Predators Run exercises. It's a joint combat drill between the US and Australian military.

Ospreys aircraft is a&nbsp;tilt-rotor aircraft.&nbsp;It is a hybrid craft that has two engines on fixed wingtips. These allow the aircraft to land and take-off vertically. It travels much faster than a conventional helicopter.

The safety record of this type of aircraft has reportedly come into question following a series of fatal accidents.

In April 2000, 19 Marines were killed when an Osprey crashed during a training exercise in Arizona.&nbsp;

And three marines were killed in 2017 when an Osprey crashed after clipping the back of a transport ship while trying to land at sea off Australia's north coast.&nbsp;

In July this year, four Australians were killed after their Taipan helicopter crashed into sea during war games near Queensland.

Northern Australia has assumed greater importance in recent years as the US and Australia look to counter growing Chinese influence in the Asia-Pacific region.

Similar to Australia actually, when you look at their last four or five months, they've had a really good and strong - what we like to call - the engine room. And then they've got some good problems to solve through the middle order.

China deployed a swarm of surveillance satellites to spy on two significant military training operations involving the United States and Australia, Australian Broadcasting Corporation reported. During the recently concluded Exercise Talisman Sabre, China is said to have deployed hundreds of its satellites over Australia to gather intelligence.

Among these satellites was China's Shiyan 12-01, manoeuvring strategically beneath the equator to keep a watch on the joint war games between the US and Australia. Additionally, satellites like Shijian-17 and Shijian-23 were observed moving eastward to cover various zones where the military exercises took place.

Australia's Victoria state will pay A$380 million ($243 million) to Commonwealth Games organisers, Victoria Premier Daniel Andrews said on Saturday, after it withdrew as 2026 event host citing a projected cost blowout.

In July, Victoria pulled out of hosting the quadrennial multi-sport event, which was to have been held in four regional hubs, with Andrews saying costs could have ballooned to more than A$7 billion from a budgeted A$2.6 billion.

The decision has raised the possibility that the Games may not take place for the first time since being cancelled due to the Second World War.

Australian state to pay $243 million for withdrawing as 2026 Commonwealth Games host

Sweden scored either side of half-time to spoil Australia's party and claim third spot at the&nbsp;Women's&nbsp;World&nbsp;Cup&nbsp;with a 2-0 win in Brisbane on Saturday.

In front of a crowd of nearly 50,000, Sweden took the lead with a 30th-minute penalty by Fridolina Rolfo and doubled their advantage with a powerful strike from Kosovare Asllani just after the hour.

Ranked third in the&nbsp;world, this is the fourth time that Sweden have finished third at the tournament.

They fully deserved their win against the hosts, dominating the midfield and keeping talismanic Australian striker Sam Kerr relatively quiet.

Australia's other dangerous attacker, Mary Fowler, had a night to forget as she struggled physically against the size and power of the Swedish defenders.

By contrast, Sweden striker Stina Blackstenius caused havoc among the Australian defence during her 63 minutes on the pitch and had a hand in both goals.

The Swedes opened the match with far more intent than the Matildas and dominated for most of the first period.

Playing a bit like England in their 3-1 semi-final win over the Matildas on Wednesday, the Swedes slowed the ball down and controlled the midfield.

Australia only really looked dangerous on the transition and for much of the time they seemed to be chasing shadows, struggling to get any meaningful possession.

The Swedes had a golden chance to take the lead in the first 60 seconds when Blackstenius shot low across goal.

Australian goalkeeper Mackenzie Arnold, who had another excellent night, parried the ball away and Ellie Carpenter did well to clear from in front of an open goal.

The Matildas didn't have their first shot until the 24th minute when a Hayley Raso drive drew a good save from Sweden keeper Zecira Musovic.

But minutes later Sweden took the lead when VAR ruled that Clare Hunt had clipped Blackstenius's heel after yet another dangerous run into the box from the Swedish striker.

Australian coach Tony Gustavsson made an attacking change on the 60-minute mark, bringing on Emily van Egmond and Cortnee Vine, but it was Sweden who continued to control the match.

They went some way to silencing the sell-out crowd when Blackstenius laid a ball across goal for Asllani, who smashed a powerful strike past a diving Arnold.

It was their last contribution of the night as both were subbed almost immediately.

Australia tried desperately to breach the Swedish defence in the last 20 minutes with deep crosses into the box but Musovic was largely untroubled to keep a clean sheet.

Women's World Cup: Sweden take third place with 2-0 win over co-host Australia

A man from Australia has been handed a two-year good-behaviour bond after he mailed his faeces and urine to Hollywood celebrities Leonardo DiCaprio and Jared Leto. The incident, which took place in the state of Western Australia, came to light when one of the packages containing the waste ruptured, spilling its contents onto a postal worker. The man behind this act, Veronica Grey, sent a total of 23 parcels from various post offices in the region in the month of February&nbsp;2023.&nbsp;

The court proceedings, held in the town of Broome, revealed that Grey had sent the parcels with labels stating they contained "valentine confectionary." This eyebrow-raising act of mailing waste material was categorised as using a postal service to menace, harass, or cause offense, leading to Grey's guilty plea on five charges.

<h2>A journey across continents</h2>

Born in the Philippines and subsequently moving to the United States and Australia, Grey's unusual endeavour attracted attention not only for its shocking nature but also for the underlying motivations that surfaced during the legal proceedings.

<h2>Unconventional intentions</h2>

Defending his actions, Grey's lawyer asserted that the purpose behind the peculiar mailings was not to harass the Hollywood actors but rather to communicate his "passion for the environment."

This surprising defence highlighted the unconventional rationale that guided Grey's decisions, shedding light on a motive that diverged significantly from the assumed intent of harassment.

Further revelations emerged from a psychiatric report presented during the court proceedings. Grey's impulse control was shown to be influenced by a mental health condition, providing a glimpse into the complexities underlying his actions.

Magistrate Deen Potter, presiding over the case, emphasised the significant impact Grey's actions had on postal operations. The ruptured package not only led to an unsettling experience for the postal worker but also drew attention to the broader disruption caused by the unusual mailing campaign.

The culmination of these events led to the sentencing decision, with Grey receiving a two-year good-behaviour bond as a result of his unconventional and disruptive actions. The case serves as a reminder of the unforeseen consequences that can stem from seemingly outlandish acts and the legal outcomes that follow.

Court sentences Australian man who sent faeces, urine to Leonardo DiCaprio, Jared Leto

A 45-year-old Pakistani-origin man aboard a Malaysia Airlines flight has been charged for allegedly threatening to blow up the plane during a flight from Sydeny to Kuala Lumpur.&nbsp;

The accused, identified as Muhammad Arif, a resident of Canberra, was arrested by the airport authorities after&nbsp;Malaysia Airlines flight MH122 was forced to return to Sydney, three hours after the flight had taken off. According to&nbsp;&nbsp;Australian Federal Police (AFP), Arif claimed to have explosives on him which set panic among the plane passengers.&nbsp;

According to news agency AFP, Arif was&nbsp;charged with making a false statement about a threat to damage an aircraft and failing to comply with the cabin crew’s safety instructions. If convicted, he faces a maximum prison sentence of 10 years and a fine of over $7,300.&nbsp;

A mysterious tale of a family of five members in the small Australian town of Leongatha became a bit clearer after the Australian woman who cooked beef Wellington using lethal mushrooms, which has been linked to three deaths, told the police that it was an accident, on Monday (August 14).&nbsp;

<h2>What did the suspect&nbsp;say?</h2>

According to Australian media reports, Erin Patterson, who is not facing charges, provided a statement of events to police where she said she had used some dried mushrooms but did not know they were poisonous.&nbsp;

“I am now devastated to think that these mushrooms may have contributed to the illness suffered by my loved ones,” Erin said, as per Australian media reports. “I really want to repeat that I had absolutely no reason to hurt these people whom I loved,” she added.&nbsp;

However, her statement to the Victoria Police has not been publicly released, it has been reported by the Australian media. Erin reportedly admitted to lying to the officials about a food dehydrator that has since been seized by the police.&nbsp;

According to the 48-year-old, she was being questioned by her estranged husband about whether she had poisoned his parents and panicked and got rid of the dehydrator worried that she might lose custody of her children.&nbsp;

Last week, Australian detective Dean Thomas said that the investigation is likely to be lengthy due to the complexity of the case. “We presume at this stage it was mushrooms but it’s a complex investigation that I think will take some time,” said the police.&nbsp;

<h2>About the case</h2>

The incident took place on July 29, when Erin’s former in-laws Gail and Don Patterson stopped for lunch with their grandkids at her house. They were then joined by Gail’s sister Heather Wilkinson and her husband Ian Wilkinson. However, Erin’s estranged husband could not attend at the last minute.

Hours after the meal, all four guests took themselves to the local hospital with what they first believed was severe food poisoning. However, Heather (66), Gail (70), and Don (70) died soon after while Ian (68) is still fighting for his life awaiting a liver transplant.

Erin was identified as the suspect as she and her children were not affected by the meal. However, on Monday (August 14), the 48-year-old said that she too was hospitalised&nbsp;on July 31&nbsp;due to a stomach ache. In the hospital, Patterson allegedly received a saline drip and medication to guard against liver damage.

She reportedly said that the mushrooms used to prepare the meal were a mixture of store-bought button mushrooms and months-old dried mushrooms bought at an Asian grocery store in Melbourne.&nbsp;

The children were unharmed because they were scraped off since they did not like mushrooms, said the 48-year-old, as per media reports.&nbsp;

Australian PM Anthony Albanese to visit India to participate in G20 Leaders' Summit

Australian Prime Minister Anthony Albanese called on China on Saturday (August 12) to release Australian journalist Cheng Lei. Albanese said he was worried about Lei's condition. She has been behind bars for three years.

In a note dictated to Australian officials from her cell, Cheng Lei has described her bleak prison conditions. She said she misses trees and sunlight but "most of all I miss my children".

Cheng's partner Nick Coyle on Thursday shared the message with Australian news outlets and on the social media platform X.

PM Albanese said he was concerned about Cheng's welfare.

"I certainly am, and Cheng should be released. This is three years too long," he said.

"Cheng Lei is an Australian citizen. She is someone who does not deserve this treatment," he told reporters during a visit to Queensland.

The PM added that Australia had taken up the matter at the "highest levels" and would continue to do so "whenever Australia meets with &nbsp;China".

"It is important that her human rights as an Australian citizen be respected," the prime minister said. Albanese has been invited to visit China though no date has been set.&nbsp;

Albanese told journalists on Friday that &nbsp;Cheng's release would not be made a condition for his trip to go ahead, saying such visits "should not be transactional".

Cheng is a former anchor for Chinese state broadcaster CGTN. She has been detained since August 2020. She has been formally arrested in February 2021.

She was formally charged with "supplying state secrets overseas" but no further details have been given.

Her detention came at a time of difficult relations between Australia and China, raising speculation it was politically motivated.

China claimed on Friday that Cheng Lei's case was being handled "in strict accordance with the law", and that Cheng's legal rights were being fully protected.

"It is hoped that the Australian side will respect China's judicial sovereignty and refrain from any type of interference in the lawful handling of the case by Chinese judicial organs," a spokesperson told AFP in a written statement.&nbsp;

Cheng was tried last March behind closed doors, with even Australia's ambassador to China blocked from entering the court to observe proceedings.

The court deferred the verdict and Cheng's sentence, which could extend to life in prison.&nbsp;

Australia could be a testing ground for US hypersonic and other long-range precision weapons under the AUKUS pact, a top Pentagon official told AFP on Wednesday.

US Secretary of the Army Christine Wormuth said Australia's contribution to the three-way AUKUS agreement, which includes Britain, "doesn't always have to be dollars".

The pact was signed in late 2021 and is seen as a way of countering China's growing clout in the Asia-Pacific region.

Work under AUKUS has so far focused on supplying Australia with nuclear-powered submarines, a fleet capable of travelling stealthily over vast distances and striking foes at long range.

But the pact is increasingly focused on developing advanced capabilities such as long-range precision firing, artificial intelligence and hypersonic weapons.

Wormuth said Australia could be a proving ground for these weapons.

"One thing Australia has in spades is long distances and relatively unpopulated land," she told AFP in a telephone interview from Washington.

"A challenge for us in the United States when it comes to hypersonics or even some of our things like the precision strike missile -- which is not a hypersonic weapon but has very long ranges in some of its increments -- for us to find open spaces in the United States where we can actually test these weapons, it's a challenge."

"Australia obviously has a tremendous amount of territory where that testing is a little bit more doable -- so I think that's a unique thing, as an example, that the Australians bring to the table."

China has denounced the AUKUS pact as undermining peace in the region -- a charge that Washington, Canberra and London reject.

But critics have also asked whether it is truly cooperative, or whether the United States, because of its size and overwhelming military power, will dominate.

Wormuth said she expected the two smaller partners to pitch in and "have skin in this game -- and they do".

"The sense I got certainly from talking to senior Australian officials is they're not doing this to make us happy, they're not doing this just for fun," said the Pentagon official, who visited Australia last week for the Talisman Sabre multinational military exercise.

"They're doing this because they see it as in their own national interest in terms of being able to meet the different challenges that they see in the theatre."

<h2>'Prohibitively expensive'</h2>

Facing Russia's war in Europe, threats from North Korea and a more bellicose China, the United States has sought to bolster its defence alliances and put more advanced capabilities into the hands of allies like Australia, Ukraine and Taiwan.

For much of the Cold War, it was Washington's policy to be able to fight two major wars at once.

Wormuth admitted that today, budget constraints, US public opinion and the relative strength of Russia and China make such a doctrine impossible.

"I think there is a recognition that when you look at the size of our military, when you look at the size of the defence budget that the American taxpayer is willing to pay for, we... don't plan to fight more than one major war at a time," she said.

Instead, the United States hopes its alliance and nuclear arsenal will "discourage opportunistic aggression".

"Given the sophistication of the Russian military and the Chinese military today, to try to size our military to hypothetically handle two wars at a time would be prohibitively expensive".

Pentagon eyes missile testing role for Australia

A woman in Australia was fired from the company she had been working with for 18 years after her employers used keystroke technology to find out that she was not typing enough while working from home (WFH).

A woman in Australia was fired from the company she had been working with for 18 years after her employers used keystroke technology to find out that she was not typing enough while working from home (WFH). According to a report by 7News on Wednesday (August 9), the Fair Work Commission (FWC) rejected an unfair dismissal application by Suzie Cheikho, stating she was fired from Insurance Australia Group (IAG) for a valid reason of misconduct. The FWC's findings said that Cheikho was responsible for creating insurance documents, meeting regulatory timelines and monitoring WFH compliance among other roles. The findings added that she was fired from IAG on February 20 for missing deadlines and meetings, being absent and unaccountable, and failing to lodge a product disclosure statement which led to the industry regulator fining IAG. Woman claims she was targeted A month later, Cheikho claimed to the commission that her company had a "premeditated plan to remove her from the business and that she was targeted due to her mental health issues." However, the findings showed that the woman's dismissal did not come without warning. The 7News report said that Cheikho received a formal warning in November last year about her output, and she was put on a performance improvement plan. A detailed review of cyber activity carried out Cheikho was the subject of a detailed review of her cyber activity. The review took a look at how many times she pressed buttons on her keyboard on 49 working days from October to December last year. The review found out that she started late on 47 days, did not work her rostered hours for 44 days, finished early on 29 days and performed zero hours of work on four days. It also found on the days she did log on she had “very low keystroke activity” and recorded zero strokes over 117 hours in October, 143 hours in November, and 60 hours in December. According to FWC President Thomas Roberts, the evidence showed the woman was not working as she was required to do during her designated working hours while being monitored. Woman fired after her company uses tech to monitor her WFH performance: Report

Decades after a retired chicken farmer found curious bones in Australia's New South Wales, scientists have identified the remains as those belonging to an almost 250 million-year-old lizard-like species. With this, the mystery which has captivated scientists for years has finally come to an end.

<h2>A head-scratching mystery</h2>

The amazing discovery, as per experts, may "rewrite the evolution of amphibians in Australia," and prove that the nation was a "great place for animals to evolve and find refuge after mass extinctions".

As per a BBC report, scientists estimate that the "new" species of amphibians roamed Australia some 247 million years ago.

Based on the nearly complete skeleton, scientists estimate that the amphibian was approximately 1.5 metres (around 5 feet) long and had a salamander-shaped body.&nbsp;

The remarkable lizard-like amphibian is said to have survived not just one, but two mass-extinction events. It is part of the Temnospondyli family — which refers to resilient amphibians that survived two of the earth's five mass extinction event; including a series of volcanic eruptions that wiped off about 70-80 per cent of all dinosaurs around 66 million years ago.&nbsp;

As per experts, the amphibian which has been named Arenaepeton supinatus, latin for "sand creeper on its back" once lived in the freshwater lakes and streams of Sydney.

As per BBC, the find was serendipity. The farmer, Mihail Mihaildis, was attempting to fix a broken garden wall at his home in Umina, a suburb located around 86 kilometres from Sydney.&nbsp;

For this, he purchased a 1.6 tonne sandstone slab in which he ultimately found the immortalised outline of an unknown creature, this remarkable amphibian of the species Arenaepeton supinatus.&nbsp;The extraordinary find soon goes on full-time display at the Australian Museum.

Scientists identify 248 million-year-old lizard-like creature that survived what dinosaurs couldn't

Google in its submission to the Australian government has said publishers should be able to opt out of having their works mined by artificial intelligence (AI) and large language models (LLM). The search giant said copyright law should be amended so that generative AI systems are not&nbsp;allowed to scrape the internet and use anyone's work.&nbsp;

Previously, Google had called for a fair use exception for AI systems to the Australian government, but this is the first time it has floated the opt-out option for publishers, according to The Guardian.&nbsp;

It called Down Under lawmakers to promote "copyright systems that enable appropriate and fair use of copyrighted content to enable the training of AI models in Australia on a broad and diverse range of data, while supporting workable opt-outs for entities that prefer their data not to be trained in using AI systems”.

<h2>Google wants to protect publisher's rights</h2>

The company, however, has not said how such&nbsp;a system would work. Although, in a blog post released last month, Danielle Romain, Google's VP for Trust said the platform was looking to evolve with the emergence of AI to protect publishers' rights.

"As new technologies emerge, they present opportunities for the web community to evolve standards and protocols that support the web’s future development. One such community-developed web standard, robots.txt,&nbsp;was created nearly 30 years ago and has proven to be a simple and transparent way for web publishers to control how search engines crawl their content," the blog post read.&nbsp;&nbsp;

"We believe it’s time for the web and AI communities to explore additional machine-readable means for web publisher choice and control for emerging AI and research use cases," it added.&nbsp;

According to experts, copyright will become one of the bigger problems in the future as generative AI systems continue&nbsp;to expand their horizons.&nbsp;&nbsp;

It called Down Under lawmakers to promote "copyright systems that enable appropriate and fair use of copyrighted content to enable the training of AI models in Australia on a broad and diverse range of data, while supporting workable opt-outs for entities that prefer their data not to be trained in using AI systems”. Although, in a blog post released last month, Danielle Romain, Google's VP for Trust said the platform was looking to evolve with the emergence of AI to protect publishers' rights. "As new technologies emerge, they present opportunities for the web community to evolve standards and protocols that support the web’s future development. One such community-developed web standard, robots.txt, was created nearly 30 years ago and has proven to be a simple and transparent way for web publishers to control how search engines crawl their content," the blog post read. "We believe it’s time for the web and AI communities to explore additional machine-readable means for web publisher choice and control for emerging AI and research use cases," it added. According to experts, copyright will become one of the bigger problems in the future as generative AI systems continue to expand their horizons. Also read | AI that learns without human input? Scientists make a STUNNING discovery “The general rule is that you need millions of data points to be able to produce useful outcomes...which means that there’s going to be copying, which is prima facie a breach of a whole lot of people’s copyright," Dr Kayleen Manwaring, a senior lecturer at UNSW Law and Justice told the publication. Reports state the Australian government is busy chalking up a plan as part of its news media assistance programme so that AI cannot scrape sites off their content without paying any penny.
