A pair of Sir Winston Churchill’s velvet slippers have fetched nearly £40,000 at an auction. The footwear went for sale on Tuesday afternoon for the first time in more than 20 years.

The luxury slippers are embroidered with the wartime leader’s initials. They were put up for auction alongside a large brandy glass that also belonged to the former prime minister.

Dating back to the 1950s, the slippers, which are 29cm long and embroidered in raised gold thread with the initials WSC, were expected to fetch between £10,000 and £15,000. They, however, sold for a whopping £39,040 when including the buyer’s premium.

They were purchased by a private UK collector.

Meanwhile, the 21cm brandy glass, expected to sell for £7,000-£10,000, fetched £18,300 including the buyer’s premium.

The current owner bought the slippers and brandy balloon in 1998 and previously said he would be sad to see them go.

The items were sold by Bellmans auctioneers, based in Wisborough Green, West Sussex.

"Churchill painted it for Roosevelt ... And so it signifies not just their friendship but also the special relationship between Britain and America. The other factor is that Churchill considered his North African views to be a cut above all his other paintings." &nbsp;

Churchill, who took up painting in his forties, first visited Morocco in 1935 and painted around 45 pictures of the country, according to Christie's. &nbsp;

"The record for a (Churchill) painting at auction is 1.8 million pounds, and likely interested buyers will probably come from the U.K. and the United States," Orchard said. &nbsp;

"But there's a much greater global interest, particularly in Churchill. And so we could see Middle Eastern interest, obviously, because of the subject matter as well as interest from the Far East." &nbsp;

The painting is leading Christie’s Modern British Art Evening Sale on March 1, where other works on offer include a portrait of socialite Doris Delevingne by John Lavery. &nbsp;

A sheep has been bought for 350,000 guineas (£367,500 or&nbsp;490,651$)&nbsp;at an auction -- believed to be the most expensive sheep to have ever been sold.

The sheep, Pedigree Texel ram lamb Double Diamond, was sold to three farmers at the Scottish National Texel Sale in Lanark on Thursday.

Texels are a highly sought after rare breed that originated on the small island of Texel, off the coast of the Netherlands. They regularly sell for five-figure sums.

Jeff Aiken, one of three breeders who joined forces to pay the highest price ever commanded by a sheep, said. “Every once in a while something special comes along and yesterday an extra special Texel turned up. Everyone wanted a piece of it.”

He had already agreed with another breeder to bid jointly for Double Diamond, but as the significance of the Scottish national Texel sale became clear in the leadup to the event, a third breeder joined in.

"He was just an outstanding animal, backed up by all the best genetics. There was about seven or eight people who really, really wanted him and that’s what led to the price," he said.

The lamb was sold by Charlie Boden and family from their Sportsmans flock in Cheshire.

Until the sale, the previous record for a sheep sold at auction stood at just over £230,000, set in 2009.

"It was an iconic moment in the history of sport," said Caitlin Donovan, head of handbag and sneaker sales at Christie's -- which is organizing the auction with Stadium Goods.

These sneakers are signed by the legend himself and are estimated to sell for between $650,000 and $850,000, making it the most expensive sports shoe. This record is currently held by another Air Jordan that was sold by Sotheby's in May for $560,000.&nbsp;

The other pairs of sneakers could notch up a high price too. Like the Nike Air Ship set that Jordan wore at the early part of his rookie season with the Chicago Bulls in 1984. They could fetch up to $550,000.

Air Jordan 7 Olympic, the sneakers worn by NBA legend during the gold medal game against Croatia at the 1992 Barcelona Games, which the USA "Dream Team" won, is listed between $50,000-$70,000.

Instead the lack of major partners revealed how the powerful role of Petrobras in the so-called "pre-salt polygon," along with complicated development terms and expensive signing fees discourage interest, even among majors with large purchasing power, in one of the world's biggest proven oil reserves.

Exxon and Petrobras did not respond to requests for comment.

CNOOC and CNPC did not immediately respond to e-mails sent outside&nbsp;business&nbsp;hours.

Differences emerge

Much remains unclear as to why the talks did not bear fruit.

One source said the Petrobras and Exxon disagreed over the way billions of dollars would be paid to the Brazilian firm in compensation for prior investments. Others cited differences over how much to invest in platforms to ramp up production.

Exxon was interested in taking over operations at the field, a non-starter for Petrobras, according to one of the sources.

All sources agreed that the complicated nature of the TOR auction played a major role in keeping the talks from reaching the finish line. This has been confirmed by Brazilian authorities to explain why the country failed to catch money from foreign oil companies.

"It's an awful system," Economy Minister Paulo Guedes said on Thursday. "You have to go through many layers of negotiations just to get to the oil."

Due to an agreement signed between Petrobras and the Brazilian government in 2010, the state firm already has rights to develop up to 5 billion barrels of oil in the TOR area. The Wednesday auction concerned oil in the TOR area in excess of what Petrobras had already been promised.

As a result, any winning member of a consortium would have needed to bang out a complex deal reconciling itself with the existing claims of Petrobras in the region. Brazil's government would then have needed to approve the deal.

In the end, the state-run company was nearly alone in submitting minimum bids for two of the four areas in the TOR bidding round, which officials hoped would cement Brazil's ascendance as Latin America's undisputed oil powerhouse.
