The NFL and four of its teams are donating $5 million to support Los Angeles communities impacted by the devastating wild fires that have killed at least 10 people and destroyed thousands of homes around the Southern California city.
The NFL said in a statement on Friday that its two Los Angeles teams, the Rams and Chargers, and their opponents in the wild card playoff round the Minnesota Vikings and Houston Texans, had pledged $1 million each which would be matched by the league's philanthropic arm the NFL Foundation.

Recipients of the funds include the Los Angeles Fire Department Foundation that benefits first responders from the city of Los Angeles and Los Angeles County and the American Red Cross, which provides services to those affected.
"We are heartbroken over the devastating losses experienced by so many in the Los Angeles area and inspired by the heroism of first responders and residents who have supported their neighbors," NFL Commissioner Roger Goodell said.
"The NFL family is committed to working with the Los Angeles Chargers and Los Angeles Rams to support their local communities in their time of need."
The NFL had already announced that the Rams' playoff game against the Vikings on Monday has been moved from SoFi Stadium to Arizona "in the interest of public safety."
<h2>The Texans host the Chargers on Saturday.</h2>
The NBA postponed the Los Angeles Lakers' home game against the Charlotte Hornets scheduled for Thursday and as of Friday the Lakers and Los Angeles Clippers were waiting to learn if their home games scheduled for Saturday would go ahead as planned as multiple fires continued to burn.
The Lakers trained at their practice facility on Friday, where coach JJ Redick confirmed his home was among the thousands destroyed in the Palisades fire, which has ripped through more than 20,000 acres.
"I'm not sure I've wept or wailed like that in several years," said Redick, who was emotional in speaking with reporters.
Redick, who was named coach of the Lakers in June, was living in a rented house with his wife, Chelsea and their two sons.
But despite his relatively short time there, Redick it was a blow to see the destruction of a community that had warmly embraced his family.
"It was not prepared for what I saw," Redick said of visiting Pacific Palisades after he returned home from the Lakers' road game at Dallas on Tuesday -- when the fire broke out.
<h2>'Complete devastation'&nbsp;</h2>
"It's complete devastation and destruction. I don't think you can ever prepare yourself for something like that. Our home is gone.
"Everything that we owned that was of any importance to us in almost 20 years together as a couple and 10 years of parenting was in that house," he added. "There's certain things that you can't replace, that will never be replaced."
Other sports figures were also among those grappling with the devastation.
Five-time Olympic swimming gold medallist Gary Hall Jr. said he evacuated his Pacific Palisades house taking only his dog, the insulin he uses to treat his diabetes, a painting of his grandfather and a religious artifact.
He was unable to return to the house to get his five gold, three silver and two bronze medals he won over the course of three Olympic Games in 1996, 2000 and 2004.
"I was getting pelted by embers on that first run," Hall said. "So I grabbed my dog and some dog food, and that was it," he told the Los Angeles Times.
Hall, who found refuge with family in San Diego, told the Times he was preparing for "a complete rebuild" of his life.

Sinner, initially cleared of charges relating to doping, could yet face a ban after the World Anti-Doping Agency (WADA) appealed the ruling at the Court of Arbitration for Sports (CAS). If the ruling goes against Sinner, he could be banned for at least two years, meaning he could miss up to eight Grand Slam tournaments.

It's been with me for quite a long time. But it is what it is. I'm here trying to prepare for the Grand Slam. Let's see how it goes."
The Italian won the Australian Open and the <a href="https://www.wionews.com/search?title=US+Open" rel="dofollow noopener" target="_blank">US Open</a> in 2024 but was in the headlines for all the wrong reasons. In March, Sinner tested positive for the steroid clostebol, a banned substance used to build muscle. However, he clarified that one of his team members used the substances on his own hand before treating him, thereby passing the substance through hand-to-hand contact. The team members were later fired by Sinner which saw him get into trouble.

<a href="https://www.wionews.com/search?title=Everton" rel="dofollow noopener" target="_blank">Everton</a> avoided <a href="https://www.wionews.com/search?title=FA+Cup" rel="dofollow noopener" target="_blank">FA Cup</a> embarrassment with a 2-0 victory against third tier Peterborough just hours after Sean Dyche was sacked by the struggling <a href="https://www.wionews.com/search?title=Premier+League" rel="dofollow noopener" target="_blank">Premier League</a> club on Thursday.
Dyche was axed less than four hours before the third round tie, with the club's new owners, the Friedkin Group, reportedly in talks with former Everton boss David Moyes about a return to Goodison Park.
Moyes is the bookmakers' favourite for the job of saving Everton from relegation, 12 years after he left for Manchester United.
The Scot, who managed Everton in a successful spell between 2002 and 2013, has been out of work since leaving West Ham at the end of last season.
The Toffees are once again battling to avoid relegation after winning just one of their past 11 games, with that sole success coming against lowly Wolves in December.
Everton have won only three times in 19 league matches this season and are languishing in 16th place, with only one point separating them from the relegation zone.
Dyche took charge at Everton in January 2023 and kept them in the top-flight despite numerous issues, including last season's points deduction for breaching Premier League rules on profit and sustainability.
Although the former Burnley boss maintained Everton's streak of being ever-present in English football's top-flight since 1954, their fans were unhappy with the team's dull style of play.
That made it especially painful when they failed to muster a single shot on target in Saturday's 1-0 defeat at Bournemouth and managed only two in their 2-0 loss to Nottingham Forest in the previous game.
Dyche was at the Everton training ground earlier on Thursday to say his goodbyes after the axe fell, while the matchday programme for the Peterborough game still contained his column.

<h2>Lifted the mood</h2>
Former Everton defender Leighton Baines, now the club's under-18s coach, and captain Seamus Coleman took charge against Peterborough, using the starting line-up selected by Dyche before his dismissal.
"It was a unique day in a lot of ways," Baines said. "It was just a little different. It is never nice when a manager loses his job but then everyone had to get on with their jobs as well.
"Winning a game is always a positive. I'm not too sure about what's next. Things moved so quickly today."
Peterborough's Cian Hayes' was inches away from giving them a shock first half lead when his low drive was cleared off the line by Jarrad Branthwaite.
But Beto finally lifted the mood among Everton's subdued fans in the 42nd minute as he took Harrison Armstrong's pass inside the area, rounded Peterborough keeper Nicholas Bilokapic and slotted into the empty net.
In a blow to Everton, on-loan Chelsea striker Armando Broja needed oxygen before being stretchered off with his right ankle heavily strapped.
There was no family affair for Everton defender Ashley Young, who came off the bench in the closing minutes, while his teenage son Tyler, who plays for Peterborough, remained an unused substitute.
But Branthwaite was fouled by Jadel Katongo in stoppage-time and Iliman Ndiaye converted the penalty as Everton made a winning start to life without Dyche.
Fulham powered to a 4-1 win over second tier Watford at Craven Cottage.
The Premier League side took the lead through Rodrigo Muniz's instinctive strike from Adama Traore's cross in the 26th minute.
Rocco Vata levelled for Watford with a superb blast from 25 yards in the 33rd minute.
Raul Jimenez's 49th minute penalty -- awarded for Ryan Porteous's foul on Traore -- restored Fulham's advantage.&nbsp;
Joachim Andersen's 65th minute volley effectively sealed the victory before Timothy Castagne headed in with five minutes left.
"The FA Cup is really important for us. It's a great competition, the only strange thing is to be playing on a Thursday night," Fulham boss Marco Silva said.
Cian Ashford's 19th minute goal gave Cardiff a 1-0 win at fellow Championship side Sheffield United.

FA Cup: Everton advance despite Sean Dyche dismissal; Fulham advance

<a href="https://www.wionews.com/search?title=Jude+Bellingham" rel="dofollow noopener" target="_blank">Jude Bellingham</a> and <a href="https://www.wionews.com/search?title=Rodrygo" rel="dofollow noopener" target="_blank">Rodrygo</a> struck to earn <a href="https://www.wionews.com/search?title=Real+Madrid" rel="dofollow noopener" target="_blank">Real Madrid</a> a 3-0 win over Real Mallorca on Thursday and set up a Spanish Super Cup final clash with rivals Barcelona.
Madrid have the chance to earn revenge for their heavy Clasico defeat in La Liga in October after Bellingham's clinical second-half strike sent them on their way to victory in Saudi Arabia.
Backed heavily by fans in Jeddah Madrid never looked like letting the advantage slip and a stoppage-time own goal by Martin Valjent secured their win, with Rodrygo Goes adding a late third from close range.
"It's always difficult to play against them, but we are ready, we're doing well and we want this (trophy)," Rodrygo told Movistar, before praising Bellingham, who scored his eighth goal in his last 10 games for Madrid.
"At the start of the season he was having trouble scoring, but he's always got his head up, training every day to improve and the result of his work is there," said Rodrygo.
Real Madrid made the early running against last season's Copa del Rey runners-up, with Lucas Vazquez and Rodrygo coming close in the opening stages.
Kylian Mbappe appealed for a penalty after going down under pressure from Dani Rodriguez but it would have been soft.
Jagoba Arrasate's Mallorca found their footing and did well to restrict the Spanish and European champions to no further clear chances in the first half.
Madrid lost Aurelien Tchouameni early in the second half after he hurt his head in a challenge with Cyle Larin, although he confirmed he was unharmed after the game.

<h2>Bellingham phenomenal</h2>
Madrid broke the deadlock in the 63rd minute through Bellingham after the post and Mallorca goalkeeper Dominik Greif kept Rodrygo and Mbappe at bay.
A blistering Madrid move bore fruit when Rodrygo's header from Vinicius Junior's cross hit the upright and Mbappe's effort was parried by the scrambling Greif.
Bellingham was in the right place at the right time to carefully slot home the rebound past defenders on the goal-line, continuing a stunning run of individual form in front of goal.
"Jude is a phenomenal player, he helps us win games all the time, with goals, assists, or just his work," said Tchouameni.
While Vinicius and Mbappe had a quiet night by their standards, they were both involved in the opener and Ancelotti said it showed the damage his side can do.
"When those up front activate, anything can happen," said Ancelotti.
"The four (forwards) are very dangerous, that's quite evident, everyone can see it, the quality they have."
Mallorca struggled to find a way back in and ended up contributing Madrid's second goal, when Valjent stretched to cut out a pass but slid the ball into his own goal.
Rodrygo wrapped up the win late on to set up a repeat of last season's final, won by Super Cup holders Madrid.
There was some pushing and shoving between both teams at the end, centred on a spat between Mallorca's Pablo Maffeo and Madrid defender Raul Asencio.
"It wasn't necessary to have a fight like that... in the end nothing happened, but neither team needed to do it," said Madrid coach Ancelotti.

Spanish Super Cup: Real Madrid defeat Mallorca to set up Clasico final

Legendary England bowler Steve Harmison has slammed the <a href="https://www.wionews.com/search?title=ICC" rel="dofollow noopener" target="_blank">International Cricket Council </a>(ICC) over the <a href="https://www.wionews.com/search?title=Sam+Konstas" rel="dofollow noopener" target="_blank">Sam Konstas</a>-<a href="https://www.wionews.com/search?title=Virat+Kohli" rel="dofollow noopener" target="_blank">Virat Kohli</a> row in the Boxing Day Test. In a heated exchange, Virat brushed Konstas&rsquo; shoulder on Day 1 of the Melbourne Test where the latter was on debut. The incident was reported to the match referee upon which Virat was handed one demerit point and 20 per cent match fees. <o:p></o:p>
<h2 class="MsoNormal" style="text-align: justify;">Harmison slams ICC<o:p></o:p></h2>
&ldquo; What happened with Kohli there &ndash; Kohli was bang out of order. Virat Kohli should have been banned for what he did. You know how much I love Virat Kohli and what he has done for the game, but there&rsquo;s a line, and you do not cross it,&rdquo; Harmison told the talkSPORT Cricket podcast.<o:p></o:p>
The incident took place during the opening session after India asked Australia to bat first, and debutant Konstas came out all guns blazing. He attacked from the word go, including taking on Jasprit Bumrah, and Kohli came towards him -- in between overs -- and shouldered the newcomer, receiving flak from the International Cricket Council (ICC) after the end of the day's play.<o:p></o:p>

According to Harmison, Virat should have been banned for at least one match and therefore should not have played in the SCG Test. However, no strict action was taken with the former India captain getting one demerit point. At least four demerit points are needed to trigger an automatic suspension. So Virat got away and was available for the SCG Test.&nbsp;<o:p></o:p>
Interestingly, after the SCG Test, Konstas admitted that he admired Virat and is a big fan of the India batter. The two could soon meet in the Champions Trophy if both make it to their respective national squads. <o:p></o:p>

LaLiga said it disagreed with the CSD's decision in a statement, adding that it was considering appealing.<o:p></o:p>
"The content of the resolution will be studied carefully to present the appropriate appeals, without prejudice to expressing its absolute disagreement with it," it said.<o:p></o:p>
The decision of the CSD, however, came in late as neither player was listed in the squad for the Spanish Super semifinal clash against Athletic Club. Heroics from Gavi and then Lamine Yamal saw Barcelona run out winners 2-0 to reach the final, which will be contested on Sunday.

Spanish playmaker Olmo was cleared to play again on a temporary basis before the game but the decision came too late for him or Pau Victor, in the same position, to feature against Copa del Rey winners Athletic.
Gavi put Barcelona ahead from close range after 17 minutes and teenage winger Yamal netted the second early after the break.
Spanish and European champions Real Madrid face cup runners-up Mallorca on Thursday in the second semi-final in Saudi Arabia, where the competition has been held for the past few years.
"Athletic are a very physical team that make you run a lot, we suffered above all towards the end, but we were able to play well and we're very happy," Yamal told Movistar.
The winger said Olmo and Victor were pleased to be allowed to play once more.
"In the end you're nervous when you can't play and when you get news like that, you're very happy," added Yamal.
Barca coach Hansi Flick hailed the decision from Spain's national sports council regarding Olmo and Victor.
"The whole club is very happy for this right decision," said Flick, hoping to win his first silverware at the helm of Barca.
"We wanted to show we are a team and we win also for them."
Barcelona, who qualified as La Liga runners-up, started brightly and Raphinha volleyed over from a fine Jules Kounde cross and forced Unai Simon into a good save with a free-kick.
It was no surprise when the Catalans broke the deadlock with Alejandro Balde cutting the ball back for Gavi, playing in Olmo's attacking midfield role, to turn home for his first goal since suffering a severe knee injury last season.
The 20-year-old pointed at an imaginary watch in his celebration, a nod to Olmo who regularly produces the same gesture after scoring.
At the other end Inaki Williams dallied on the ball too long as Athletic's best attacking move of the first half broke down.
Yamal, returning after an ankle problem, should have added Barcelona's second after Raphinha's shot was saved but the 17-year-old miscued an attempted lob.
Wojciech Szczesny, on his second start in goal for Barcelona, made a good save to keep Inaki Williams at bay before the break.

<h2>Sharp Yamal</h2>
Barcelona doubled their lead early in the second half when Gavi slipped in Yamal who finished with aplomb.
Veteran Polish forward Robert Lewandowski spurned a fine chance to add the third, firing off-target when well placed.
Athletic coach Ernesto Valverde, who was sacked as Barcelona boss after a defeat at the same stadium in 2020, brought on Nico Williams to try and turn the game around.
The Spain international, heavily linked with Barcelona in the summer, was not fit enough to start, but made a positive impact from the bench.
The winger set up Oscar de Marcos to strike but the Athletic defender had strayed just offside and the goal was ruled out.
Inaki Williams also had a goal ruled out for offside after Frenkie De Jong's poor back-pass took a slight deflection off Alvaro Djalo on its way to the Ghana international.
"It's a shame given all the effort... but we have good things ahead of us and we have to continue," said Inaki Williams.
Barcelona were able to book their place in Sunday's final, in which Olmo will be allowed to feature.
"We don't care (who we face in the final), it will be hard and we want to win it, which is the important thing, and go back home with the trophy," said Yamal.

Spanish Super Cup: Barcelona defeat Athletic Bilbao without Dani Olmo to reach final

Lucas Bergvall condemned <a href="https://www.wionews.com/search?title=Liverpool" rel="dofollow noopener" target="_blank">Liverpool</a> to only their second defeat this season as the teenager's late strike earned <a href="https://www.wionews.com/search?title=Tottenham" rel="dofollow noopener" target="_blank">Tottenham</a> a controversial 1-0 win in the <a href="https://www.wionews.com/search?title=League+Cup" rel="dofollow noopener" target="_blank">League Cup</a> semi-final first leg on Wednesday.
Bergvall struck with just four minutes left in north London, but Liverpool boss Arne Slot was furious that the Swede was still on the pitch to score his first goal for Tottenham.
Already on a yellow card, the 18-year-old had escaped a second booking moments earlier after tripping Kostas Tsimikas.
Tsimikas was out of position after the tackle when Bergvall scored from an attack that started on the left flank vacated by the Liverpool defender.
Tottenham's victory was a welcome tonic for Rodrigo Bentancur, who was taken to hospital after suffering a worrying injury.
Bentancur stooped to head a corner in the seventh minute and stayed on the ground after falling unchallenged.
His team-mates showed immediate concern and play was stopped as Bentancur received medical attention for nine minutes.
The 27-year-old was given oxygen through a mask during the treatment as a hush fell on the capacity crowd.
At half-time, Tottenham moved to ease fears over Uruguay star Bentancur, who only recently returned from a seven-game ban for using a racial slur about team-mate Son Heung-min.
"We can confirm Rodrigo is conscious, talking and will go to hospital for further checks," the club said in a statement on X during the half-time interval.
Responding to criticism of Tottenham's spluttering form and his attacking tactics, Tottenham boss Ange Postecoglou claimed earlier this term that he always wins a trophy in his second season.
The under-fire Australian could do with backing up that boast given Tottenham's poor form in the Premier League.
Tottenham last won a trophy when they lifted the League Cup in 2008 and the competition is shaping up as an opportunity to end that long silverware drought.
Liverpool won the League Cup last season in what proved to be Jurgen Klopp's last trophy.
Slot has taken Liverpool to the top of the Premier League and the Champions League since replacing Klopp, making this a rare flop from the Reds under the Dutchman.

<h2>Slot frustrated</h2>
It was Liverpool's first defeat in 24 games in all competitions since a 1-0 loss to Nottingham Forest in the league in September.
That was the only other loss endured by Slot this season and, following Sunday's disappointing 2-2 draw with lowly Manchester United, he is facing the first test of his prolonged honeymoon period on Merseyside.
The second leg at Anfield on February 6 will decide who advances to the final.
Newcastle won 2-0 at Arsenal in the first leg of the other semi-final on Tuesday.
Postecoglou had handed a debut to goalkeeper Antonin Kinsky, who replaced injured duo Guglielmo Vicario and Fraser Forster after signing from Slavia Prague in a &pound;12 million ($14 million) deal at the weekend.
With Liverpool well below their best, the 21-year-old Czech wasn't forced into action until late in the first half when he held on to Alexis Mac Allister's header.
Slot grew frustrated with Liverpool's miscues, gesticulating at his backroom staff after Cody Gakpo's shot was saved by Kinsky.
There was more angst for Slot when keeper Alisson Becker turned an ambitious turn inside his own area, allowing Bergvall to steal possession and start an attack that ended with Pedro Porro chipping just wide.
Slot sent on Trent Alexander-Arnold and he almost made an instant impact with a shot that was cleared off the line by Radu Dragusin.
Darwin Nunez, another of Slot's substitutes, was denied by a fine save from Kinsky.
Bergvall escaped a red card before snatching his priceless winner in the 86th minute.
Dominic Solanke showed impressive strength and determination to hold off Ibrahima Konate, laying a pass into the path of Bergvall, who slammed low past Alisson.
Kinsky made a superb stop to repel Nunez's agile back-flick in stoppage-time as Postecoglou finally enjoyed a night to savour.

Here's all you need to know about Indian men's cricket team schedule for 2025

Former Australia captain <a href="https://www.wionews.com/search?title=Michael+Clarke" rel="dofollow noopener" target="_blank">Michael Clarke</a> is in awe of <a href="https://www.wionews.com/search?title=Jasprit+Bumrah" rel="dofollow noopener" target="_blank">Jasprit Bumrah</a> after his Player of the Series performance in the recently concluded <a href="https://www.wionews.com/search?title=Border-Gavaskar+Trophy" rel="dofollow noopener" target="_blank">Border-Gavaskar Trophy</a>. Bumrah was at his fluent best in the series with 32 wickets in nine innings despite India losing the series 1-3. According to Clarke, Bumrah is the best all-format pace bowler at the moment as he continues to impress for India in both red-ball and white-ball cricket.
<h2 class="MsoNormal" style="text-align: justify;">Michael Clarke in awe of Bumrah</h2>
"The thing I've thought about Bumrah after the series finished and I was sitting and thinking about his performances, I actually think he's the best fast bowler ever across all three formats," Clarke told ESPN's Around The Wicket.
"I know a lot of great fast bowlers, Curtly Ambrose, Glenn McGrath, didn't get to play T20 cricket, so I'm not talking about those guys, but in regards to anyone who has played all three formats, I think he might be the best ever. He's actually that good in any conditions, that's what makes him great; any conditions, any format, this guy's a freak."
India lost the Sydney Test by six wickets thereby losing the series 3-1, however, had it not been for Bumrah and his heroics things could have been worse. The 31-year-old also led India on two occasions in the series, first leading India to a record 295-run win in Perth and then in the Sydney Test.
Bumrah&rsquo;s performance also helped India win the T20 World Cup in 2024 where they beat South Africa in the final.

While Bumrah&rsquo;s performance came as a great incentive for India, he did not participate in the final innings of the Sydney Test due to a back spasm. He is unlikely to play in the white-ball series against England starting later this month and could possibly play against Bangladesh in the Champions Trophy 2025. Bumrah has been a key asset to Team India in recent years, especially in the ICC tournaments.<o:p></o:p>

Former South Africa captain <a href="https://www.wionews.com/search?title=Graeme+Smith" rel="dofollow noopener" target="_blank">Graeme Smith</a> has reacted to the two-tier proposed structure in Test cricket as reports state that the <a href="https://www.wionews.com/search?title=ICC" rel="dofollow noopener" target="_blank">International Cricket Council</a> (ICC) could soon hold concrete talks. Speaking on Tuesday (Jan 7) at the <a href="https://www.wionews.com/search?title=SA20" rel="dofollow noopener" target="_blank">SA20</a> program, Smith reckoned implementing a promotion-relegation system could result in disparity. Recently, reports stated that the ICC, Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI), Cricket Australia (CA) and the England and Welsh Cricket Board (ECB) could hold meetings to discuss the two-tier Test structure.
<h2 class="MsoNormal" style="text-align: justify;">Smith reacts to new Test format</h2>
&ldquo;India are probably the best because they are commercially so reliable for the other nations. But where do you find the top three nations playing each other all the time? And you can only imagine in the next FTP cycle how that&rsquo;s been tied up in the background,&rdquo; Smith said during an appearance on Sky Cricket.
&ldquo; How does the ICC create a structure that&rsquo;s fair in the top three&rsquo;s eyes? I think what world cricket needs is South Africa to be strong, the West Indies to be strong, and Sri Lanka to improve. Otherwise, can you see a world where there are only three nations playing cricket in the future?&rdquo; he added.
According to the latest developments, a proposed system will see India, England, Australia, South Africa, Pakistan and Sri Lanka form the top tier, while Afghanistan, West Indies, Bangladesh, Zimbabwe and Ireland will form the second tier. The proposed plan includes a promotion and relegation format.

However, any implementation of the format will see a significant change in the ICC&rsquo;s Future Tour Program (FTP). This will also result in the low frequency of fixtures between top teams and non-established teams.
Currently, all teams compete under the same Test format where they compete for a place in the World Test Championship (WTC) final, held once in two years. However, the Premier League leaders are enjoying stability both on and off the field requiring Musk to splash a significant amount of cash to purchase the club. Elon Musk to buy Liverpool? "I can't comment on that. They'll raise the price," he told Times Radio. When pressed on whether his son would want to buy Liverpool, Musk added: "Oh, yes. But that doesn't mean he's buying it. <a href="https://www.wionews.com/search?title=newcastle" rel="dofollow noopener" target="_blank">Newcastle</a> took a giant stride towards the League Cup final as goals from <a href="https://www.wionews.com/search?title=Alexander+Isak" rel="dofollow noopener" target="_blank">Alexander Isak</a> and Anthony Gordon earned a 2-0 semi-final, first leg lead at Arsenal on Tuesday.
The Magpies have never previously won the competition and have had to wait since 1969 to celebrate any major trophy.
But in Isak they have the form striker in England right now and he rifled home the opener then helped tee up the second for Gordon.
<h2>Arsenal with task in hand</h2>
<a href="https://www.wionews.com/search?title=Arsenal" rel="dofollow noopener" target="_blank">Arsenal</a> have a mountain to climb when the sides meet for the second leg on February 5 if they are to progress to meet either Tottenham or Liverpool in the final.
"It's massive. it's a great result but it's only the first half," said Isak after Newcastle's seventh consecutive win and first at the Emirates since 2010.
"If we don't go through then this has no meaning."
The importance of silverware to both clubs was reflected in the line-ups as Mikel Arteta and Eddie Howe named their strongest available teams.
Arteta has brought Arsenal back into contention for Premier League titles in recent seasons, but his only trophy in charge of the Gunners came five years ago by lifting the FA Cup in the early months of his reign.
The home side were able to welcome back Kai Havertz, Martin Odegaard and Gabriel Martinelli from the side that started Saturday's 1-1 draw at Brighton.
But Arsenal's lack of a lethal striker like Isak proved the difference between the sides.
Arsenal had the majority of the ball and the chances but failed to make them count.
"That was the biggest difference in the game. In every other aspect, we were the better team," said Arteta on his side's wasted chances.
"I have full belief. I have seen my team playing against them. I believe we can do it!"
Martinelli came closest when he raced onto Leandro Trossard's pass and smashed against the post.
Moments later came the sucker punch. Arsenal, so renowned for their own set-piece threat, allowed a long free-kick into their box to fall at the feet of Isak who fired in off the underside of the bar.
The Swede's 14th goal in his last 15 games took him to 50 in a Newcastle shirt -- doing so in five fewer matches than it took the club's record goalscorer Alan Shearer.
Isak had a major role to play in what could be a decisive second goal in the tie just after the break.
This time the Newcastle striker's quick feet allowed him to get a shot off that was parried by David Raya into the path of the onrushing Gordon to fire in the rebound.
Arsenal should still have made their mammoth task for the return leg in Tyneside next month a more manageable one.

Havertz somehow miscued a header wide with the goal gaping to cut the arrears.
Howe replaced Isak and Gordon as Newcastle were happy to just to protect their lead in a 5-5-0 formation for the final 20 minutes.
Arsenal, though, lacked the guile to break them down without the injured Bukayo Saka to seemingly extend their wait for Arteta's revolution to deliver another trophy.
