After suspending <a href="https://www.wionews.com/tags/ipl-2025" rel="dofollow">IPL 2025</a> for a week owing to escalating cross-border tensions between India and Pakistan, the <a href="https://www.wionews.com/tags/bcci" rel="dofollow">BCCI</a> announced its resumption with a <a href="https://www.wionews.com/sports/bcci-releases-ipl-2025-revised-schedule-tournament-to-restart-on-may-17-final-in-june-9062057" rel="dofollow">revised schedule</a>. Although unprecedented circumstances forced the Indian Cricket Board to halt the tournament midway, as the same goes for PCB for the Pakistan Super League (PSL), its resumption has sent the tournament logistics up for a toss. Former Australian seamer and two-time IPL winner Mitchell Johnson has slammed the BCCI for coercing foreign players to compete in the remainder of the tournament.
While IPL 2025 was supposed to end on May 25 earlier, the final date is now pushed back to the first week of June, complicating overseas players&rsquo; national and franchise commitments.

For instance, England and the West Indies will begin their white-ball series on May 29, the same day IPL 2025 playoffs get underway, and Australia and South Africa will face off in the WTC Final 2025 starting June 11 at the Lord&rsquo;s. What these two series have done is tie up players picked to play for their national teams to decide on abiding by their IPL commitments. Cricket South Africa (CSA) decided against extending WTC Final-bound players&rsquo; NOCs, and Cricket Australia and the ECB decided on the same line.
However, those not featuring in any of the international series are back in India for the completion of IPL 2025.&nbsp;
While IPL 2025 resumes (in India), the PCB also decided to resume their premier T20 tournament on the same date. Several reports suggested that not all players were willing to turn up for their respective franchise teams across both competitions but were forced to avoid financial repercussions.
&ldquo;While Cricket Australia has empowered players to make their own decisions, the weight of those choices can be heavy. Opting not to play could lead to disappointment or even professional and financial repercussions down the track, but prioritising safety is first and foremost,&rdquo; Johnson wrote in his column for The Western Australian, as quoted by the Indian Express.&nbsp;
&ldquo;If I had to make a call whether to head back to India and finish the tournament, it would be an easy decision. It&rsquo;s a no from me. Lives and safety are the most important thing, not paying cheques.
&ldquo;It&rsquo;s a personal decision. No one should be coerced or feel pressured into going back, even if the IPL and Pakistan Super League, which has also been halted, push hard for it. Both tournaments should just end now or consider moving, which then becomes a huge financial issue,&rdquo; Johnson wrote.
<h2>Logistical challenges</h2>
Although until Thursday (May 15) evening, all South African players were going to be part of IPL 2025 playoffs, CSA&rsquo;s final call broke that notion, asking all WTC-Final-bound players to leave the tournament midway for the summit clash against Australia.
Also, several Australian players picked for the WTC Final have opted out against featuring for the remainder of the tournament, including seamer Mitchell Starc.
&ldquo;With the IPL final now pushed back to June 3, just a week before the WTC final starts at Lord&rsquo;s, the impact on players&rsquo; preparation for what is supposedly Test cricket&rsquo;s showpiece match is another issue. South Africa appears to be taking a much harder line with their players than Australia, which is interesting given the financial ties between India and South Africa through the SA20 competition,&rdquo; Johnson added.

Having worked with Kohli in different capacities before, Shastri knows a thing or two more about the modern-day great. Detailing what Kohli said to him before going public with his call, Shastri revealed Virat was clear (in his head) about his decision, adding there was no two ways about it.&nbsp;Shastri continued that Kohli has no regrets about retiring from Tests and that he gave it all in this format.&nbsp;
Meanwhile, the batting genius made his Test debut in 2011 and went on to play 123 matches, scoring 9230 runs at an average above 46. He completed 30 centuries and seven double hundreds, besides breaking plenty of records as a batter and captain.&nbsp;

"I did speak to him about it [his announcement], I think a week before that, and his mind was very clear that he'd given us everything," Shastri said on The ICC Review.&nbsp;
"There were no regrets. There were one or two questions I asked, and that's a personal conversation which, you know, he mentioned very clearly, there were no doubts in his mind, which made me think, 'Yes, the time is right'. The mind has told his body that it's time to go.
"He doesn't have regrets. Ideally, everyone might want [him] to carry on. But then, he looks at the bigger picture. He feels he can contribute massively in the one-day game. There's a lot of franchise cricket left for him in his life. The reason I think he will not have regrets is because he gave his everything," Shastri continued.
<h2>He&rsquo;s dedicated, but burnout fear loomed</h2>
Shastri explained what it is like to be Virat Kohli.&nbsp;

"Individually, as a bowler, as a batsman, a player does his job, [and] then you sit back, " Shastri said. "But [with Kohli] when the team goes out, it's as if he has to take all the wickets, he has to take all the catches, he has to make all the decisions on the field.
"That much involvement, I would think there's going to be a burnout somewhere if he doesn't take a rest if he doesn't compartmentalise how much he wants to play across formats, there is bound to be a burnout. Well, it's happened now, and he's pulled out of Test cricket. Unfortunately, because I still think he could have played two [more] years, but he's the boss. If his mind tells him that is enough, it's enough,&rdquo; he continued.&nbsp;
Meanwhile, Kohli will continue to play the One-Dayers and franchise cricket for the Royal Challengers Bengaluru in the IPL.&nbsp;

Ex-India coach reveals chat with Virat Kohli before his Test retirement, says 'he has no regrets'

The selectors will pick the squad for the five-match Test series against England in the final week of May, with all eyes on the new Test captain.
Considering Virat Kohli has also announced his Test retirement, the Ajit Agarkar-led selection committee would be burdened to pick a balanced squad without two batting jewels for the tough UK tour.
"First of all, everyone is saying that Gill is the captain. Everyone is going in that direction. But there is a loud option in Jasprit Bumrah, and why do we forget about Ravindra Jadeja," Ashwin said during a chat with former Tamil Nadu opener Vidyut Sivaramakrishnan on his YouTube channel.&nbsp;
"If you are willing to go for a new person as captain, I would say why not make him [Gill] an understudy of an experienced guy for two years before handing him the job on a full-time basis,&rdquo; he continued.

Two players, barring the retired duo who are experienced and knowingly or unknowingly running for India&rsquo;s Test captaincy race, are Bumrah and Jadeja.
While Bumrah found success in three Tests he captained, Jadeja is yet to know what Test leadership feels like.

Per the latest report, Starc has informed DC about his decision, with the IPL side prepared to fight for their maiden IPL title without their top wicket-taker thus far this season.
A Times of India (TOI) report states that Starc was not part of DC&rsquo;s first training session at the Arun Jaitley Stadium on Thursday (May 15), while Sri Lankan seamer Dushmantha Chameera was the only overseas player present at the team practice. South African players, including Faf du Plessis and Tristan Stubbs, will rejoin the team soon, while team mentor Kevin Pietersen has landed in India, linking up with the squad on Friday.
Delhi will host Gujarat on Sunday at home, but will train at the franchise&rsquo;s training ground in Aerocity on Friday. GT also landed in the capital city on Thursday evening and is scheduled to begin practice for their first game this Sunday.
<h2>Changes in the MI squad</h2>
Due to national commitments, several English and South African players scheduled to feature for their countries, including Mumbai Indians&rsquo; overseas duo of Will Jacks and Ryan Rickelton, will not be part of the IPL 2025 Playoffs should MI qualify.&nbsp;
Cricket South Africa (CSA) confirmed that all WTC-Final-bound players playing in the cash-rich league must leave the tournament by May 25 to prepare for the summit clash against Australia starting June 11 at Lord&rsquo;s.
Rickelton, part of the Test squad for the WTC Final 2025, would be among the eight South African players who would link up with the Test squad. Per the latest report, MI have roped in England batter Jonny Bairstow and seamer Richard Gleeson as their replacements for the remainder of the season.&nbsp;
As England hosts West Indies for the white-ball series, starting with three ODIs on May 29, the same day IPL 2025 Playoffs get underway, Jacks will return home; although he landed in India following the tournament&rsquo;s resumption update.&nbsp;
Bairstow, his replacement, remained unsold at the mega auction in November last year and has not featured for England since June 2024. On the other hand, Gleeson, 37, made his IPL debut last season while playing for Chennai Super Kings.&nbsp;

Mitchell Starc opts out of remainder of IPL 2025 as Delhi Capitals resume training – Report

A court in Rio de Janeiro ordered the dismissal Thursday of Brazilian football federation head Ednaldo Rodrigues over suspicions that a signature in his employment contract was forged.
The decision marks a new blow to Brazilian football, which celebrated some rare good news just four days ago with the announcement that Real Madrid coach <a href="https://www.wionews.com/tags/carlo-ancelotti" rel="dofollow">Carlo Ancelotti</a> will take the reins of the national team later this month.

The Rio court said one of the signatories of Rodrigues's 2025 contract had been mentally unfit to sign, meaning there had been "possible forgery."
As a result, the judge ruled in a judgment consulted by AFP, the employment agreement between Rodrigues and the Brazilian Football Confederation (CBF) was "null" and void.
The judge also ordered that the federation hold new leadership elections.
The CBF's interim president, Fernando Jose Sarney, said in a statement that the federation would abide by the ruling and call elections "as soon as possible."
But Brazilian media reported that the body had also appealed the judge's ruling to the Supreme Court.
Neither the court nor the CBF were immediately available to confirm the reports.
Rodrigues, the first Black president of the CBF, told journalists at a FIFA meeting in Asuncion Thursday, ahead of the ruling, that he had "absolute certainty" the document was valid.
The 71-year-old had already been temporarily suspended in 2023 after a court found irregularities with his 2022 election, but was reinstated on orders of a Supreme Court judge after FIFA threatened sanctions against Brazilian football.
FIFA and the South American Football Confederation (CONMEBOL) had refused to accept Rodrigues's 2023 ouster, warning the CBF it could be barred from international competitions if it allowed external interference in its affairs.
Rodrigues had been leading negotiations to sign Real Madrid boss Ancelotti as coach, a bid that fell apart at the time.
Ancelotti, whom Rodrigues has hailed as the "greatest coach in history," was finally appointed to the job of Selecao coach on Monday.
In March, Rodrigues was unanimously reelected to his post until 2030, as the sole remaining candidate after former star forward Ronaldo pulled out of the running.
<h2><hl2>Allegations of buying support</hl2></h2>
Weeks later, however, Rodrigues found himself again in hot water following an investigation by Brazilian magazine Piaui into the workings of the CBF.
The article claimed Rodrigues bought the support of leaders of regional football federations towards his election by giving them a big salary boost.
The CBF had been hoping that landing Ancelotti, the most successful coach in European Cup history, would help turn the page on a bruising period for Brazil, still reeling from its historic 4-1 thrashing by Argentina in March.
The team's last coach, Dorival Junior, was sacked over that performance.
The record five-time World Cup winners are languishing in fourth place in the South American qualifying table for next year's tournament in the United States, Mexico and Canada.

Fresh woes for Brazil football as federation boss Ednaldo Rodrigues dismissed

<a href="https://www.wionews.com/tags/barcelona" rel="dofollow">Barcelona</a> coach <a href="https://www.wionews.com/tags/hansi-flick" rel="dofollow">Hansi Flick</a> said early Friday that the backbone of their <a href="https://www.wionews.com/sports/lamine-yamal-fermin-lopez-on-scoresheet-as-barcelona-seal-la-liga-crown-at-espanyol-9073562" rel="dofollow">La Liga triumph this season</a> was the "family" the club has become.
The German's team wrapped up their 28th Spanish title on Thursday night with a 2-0 win at Espanyol to complete a domestic treble, following Copa del Rey and Spanish Super Cup victories.
"I think the most important thing is... it's really fantastic that everyone at this club has their job and they're doing it with a lot of passion, a really good attitude and mentality, and everyone knows how important they are," Flick told reporters.
"This helps a lot to reach our goals, and of course, the players and the atmosphere in the dressing room, this is so great, I never had this before.
"Everyone really takes care of each other and... it's unique."

When Xavi Hernandez's Barca won the title at the RCDE Stadium, they were chased off the pitch by angry home fans who rushed towards them.
"On the pitch, it was clear we could not celebrate there... two years ago (there was trouble)," Flick continued.
"It's also about respect for the fans here, so, of course, we celebrated in the dressing room, fantastic, the players could do that, really good.
"Tomorrow I will stand a little bit in the background, and I also will enjoy it. When I see the people are happy and smiling, I will enjoy it."
Despite his joy at winning the league, Flick also thought about some negative moments during the season, including the shock death of club doctor Carles Minarro in March.
"Carles is now here," said Flick, pointing towards the ceiling.
"He (would be) very proud about our team, what (we) saw in the last couple of months, so we think about him always.
"(We don't) forget him, because he was a great part of our team and will always have a place in our hearts."

'Unique' Barcelona family key to La Liga title triumph: Hansi Flick

A stunning <a href="https://www.wionews.com/tags/lamine-yamal" rel="dofollow">Lamine Yamal</a> strike helped crown <a href="https://www.wionews.com/tags/barcelona" rel="dofollow">Barcelona</a> <a href="https://www.wionews.com/tags/la-liga" rel="dofollow">La Liga</a> champions with a 2-0 win at local rivals Espanyol on Thursday, with victory ensuring Real Madrid cannot catch them at the top of the table.&nbsp;Yamal's effort and Fermin Lopez's goal took Hansi Flick's side seven points clear of Los Blancos with two matches remaining, to clinch Barcelona's 28th title and complete a superb domestic treble.
Only the Champions League escaped an exciting young Barca side this season, as they won the league for the second time in six years, at Espanyol's ground again, just as in 2023.
Back then, celebrating Barca players were chased from the field by angry home supporters, but this time, Espanyol turned on the sprinklers to soak the jubilant visitors, who headed down the tunnel quickly.
Yamal opened the scoring after 53 minutes of a tense derby clash with a brilliant curling effort, before Lopez added another in the 95th minute to secure victory.
"It's time to celebrate," said Barca coach Flick, who said he would demand even more from his team next season.
"It's in our DNA (to want to learn), it's normal, and this is what I want from the players, that they always try to get better and they have this hunger, it's crucial."
Outside the stadium before the match, several Espanyol fans were hit by a car which drove into a big crowd, although none were seriously injured, and police said it appeared to be an accident.
Barcelona were seconds away from sealing their title triumph on Wednesday, but Real Madrid snatched a 95th-minute winner against Mallorca to delay the inevitable.
Flick's side started slowly in Cornella, with Espanyol, 16th, looking dangerous on the counter-attack and keen to secure their top-flight survival.
Wojciech Szczesny made a fine save to deny Javi Puado, who broke through on goal in Espanyol's best chance of the opening period.
Barca dominated the ball but failed to create any clear opportunities themselves in the first half.
<h2><hl2>Yamal breaks through</hl2></h2>
The Catalan giants have often blown teams away this season, approaching a century of goals in La Liga, but with the title on the line and a hostile crowd against them, they needed something special to break through.
That came from 17-year-old wing wizard Yamal, who zipped inside off the right flank and unleashed a rocket into the top corner from outside the box, in a replica of his goal for Spain against France in the Euro 2024 semi-finals.
It was the teenager's eighth La Liga strike of the season, but with goals in both matches against rivals Real and also in the visit to face Atletico Madrid, he has a penchant for the big occasion.
"I don't know what to say about Lamine, he scored an amazing goal, he's had an amazing season," said Lopez.
Barca's superb display in Sunday's Clasico, in which they beat their rivals 4-3 in a thrilling battle, effectively won them the title.
They still had to get it over the line against their neighbours, though, and that became easier when Leandro Cabrera was sent off for an elbow into Yamal's stomach.
Even though they had a player fewer, Espanyol pressured Barcelona heavily until Lopez drilled past Joan Garcia to end the hosts' resistance.
Espanyol fans pelted Barcelona players with bottles as they celebrated the goal, but as the league's youngest squad wrapped up a title that most believed was unlikely at best after Kylian Mbappe's arrival at last year's champions Real, they did not care.
"On the pitch, it was clear we could not celebrate there... two years ago (there was trouble)," Flick told reporters.
"It's also about respect for the fans here, so, of course, we celebrated in the dressing room, fantastic, the players could do that, really good.

Barca dominated the ball but failed to create any clear opportunities themselves in the first half. Yamal breaks through The Catalan giants have often blown teams away this season, approaching a century of goals in La Liga, but with the title on the line and a hostile crowd against them, they needed something special to break through. "Tomorrow I will stand a little bit in the background, and I also will enjoy it. When I see the people are happy and smiling, I will enjoy it." Barcelona beat Espanyol to win La Liga 2024/25, complete season with three trophies

Jasmine Paolini reached the Italian Open final on Thursday after ending Peyton Stearns' impressive run in the Rome tournament 7-5, 6-1.&nbsp;
Home hope and sixth seed Paolini became the third Italian woman to reach the Foro Italico final, and the first since her doubles partner Sara Errani was thumped by Serena Williams in 2014.
The 29-year-old will face one of Coco Gauff and China's Zheng Qinwen, who beat world number one Aryna Sabalenka on Wednesday night, with that contest the last match of the day on centre court.
"It's a dream of mine to get to the final here. It was a difficult start, thank goodness you were all here to give me a boost," Paolini said on court.
"I didn't have a great feeling at the beginning of the match but I'm really happy about how I managed to turn it around."
Paolini was favourite to get past unseeded Stearns but early on her American opponent showed why she got to her first 1000 series semi-final by knocking out a succession of big names including Naomi Osaka and fifth seed Madison Keys.
Paolini looked way off the pace when she lost the first three games of the match in surprisingly timid fashion, serving weakly and mishitting a host of simple shots.
But she slowly began to force herself back into the contest, putting pressure on Stearns to find shots with her serving and finding both more power and accuracy on her forehand.
Stearns' frustration was clear to see after being broken to allow Paolini to serve for the set, lashing her racket into her bag before giving herself a telling off in her seat.
And a break of serve in the third game of the second set deflated Stearns, whose fate was sealed two games later when Paolini took the third of three break points, roaring her joy to her delighted supporters in the centre court stands before comfortably seeing out the match.
Paolini could yet win both the singles and women's doubles tournaments, with her and Errani taking on Mirra Andreeva and Diana Shnaider in the semi-finals on Friday.

<h2 style="text-align: justify;">Paul eyes Sinner</h2>
Tommy Paul set up a potential semi-final in the men's tournament with Jannik Sinner after beating Hubert Hurkacz 7-6 (7/4), 6-3 to move into the last four in Rome.
American Paul come through a humdrum quarter-final to reach the Foro Italico semis, where he awaits one of Sinner or Casper Ruud, for the second straight year.&nbsp;
"I just feel comfortable out here and yeah I've been playing some good tennis this week," said Paul.
Sinner faces by the far the toughest test since his return from a three-month doping ban when he takes on sixth seed Ruud in the first of two evening matches on centre court.
The world number one is yet to drop a set on home clay but Ruud is on a hot streak and eyeing a second straight 1000 Masters triumph after breaking his duck in Madrid earlier this month.
Norwegian Ruud has won more matches on clay than any other player on the men's tour in the last five years and Sinner is still finding his feet after his suspension, accepted from the World Anti-Doping Agency for testing positive for traces of clostebol in March last year.
If Sinner gets through to the semis it will be the first time two Italian men have reached the last four of a Masters 1000 tournament since the series' creation 35 years ago, with Lorenzo Musetti facing Carlos Alcaraz on Friday.

Italian Open: Jasmine Paolini delights home crowd by reaching 'dream' final

Lewis Hamilton admitted Thursday that he had underestimated how difficult it would be for him to adapt to life with Ferrari after 12 years with Mercedes.&nbsp;
The 40-year-old seven-time world champion won six of his championships with the &lsquo;silver arrows&rsquo; before his sensational exit last year.&nbsp;
"I anticipated it would be very tough because I&rsquo;ve joined a team before and I came in with a really open mind.&nbsp;
"I just didn't know how tough it was going to be," he admitted at Imola ahead of this weekend's Emilia Romagna Grand Prix.
"I knew it was going to be challenging and it's as challenging as it could ever be on all fronts."
After six races this year, he is still seeking a first podium finish in a Grand Prix and is seventh in the drivers' title race behind Kimi Antonelli, the Italian teenager who replaced him at Mercedes.&nbsp;
Hamilton cut a low-key figure on arrival in the paddock at the Autodromo Enzo e Dino Ferrari, the team's home circuit, and conceded that "there&rsquo;s still a lot of work that needs to be done" if he is to revive his form.&nbsp;
"The championship?" he said. "There's still a long, long way to go. From all my years of experience, when you&rsquo;re over 100 points behind at this point in the season, with a car that's up against a car (McLaren) that is dominant, you have to assume that you're not necessarily fighting for a championship win.
"But things can turn around."
<h2>Stay vigilant</h2>
Hamilton trails series leader Oscar Piastri of McLaren by 90 points.
Ferrari plan to add an upgrade package to their car this weekend with a major one expected in Spain in two weeks' time, but Hamilton said he is unsure of their value or potential.
"At the moment, we don't know, but we want to get closer and we can't shut the door on any ideas. We have to keep our eyes and our heads up and stay vigilant.&nbsp;
"We have to push with the expectation and goal of winning, finding the tenths to turn things around. You have to believe it."
Teammate Charles Leclerc withdrew from his media duties on Thursday due to illness.
In a statement Ferrari confirmed that the Monegasque driver was out of sorts but was expected to be fit to drive on Friday.&nbsp;
"Charles is feeling unwell and will not be coming to the track today," it said.
"He will rest and focus on recovering and we expect him to be in the car tomorrow."
Leclerc's absence added to the Italian team's woes ahead of their first 'home' race of the season.
Ferrari, with marquee signing Hamilton struggling to shine, are already 152 points adrift of leaders McLaren in the constructors' championship after finishing last season only 14 points behind them.

After six races, they have only registered one podium finish &ndash; Leclerc taking third place at the Saudi Arabian Grand Prix in April &ndash; and one sprint victory, by Hamilton in China.
Leclerc is in his seventh year with Ferrari after joining from Sauber in 2018 and is widely thought to be one of the fastest drivers in the paddock, but without a car to match his talents.&nbsp;
He has won eight Grands Prix with Ferrari and claimed 44 podium finishes and 26 pole positions, but he has been unable to overcome the dominance of four-time champion Max Verstappen and Red Bull in the 'ground effect' era.

Mercurial Australian tennis player Nick Kyrgios will appear at the upcoming French Open for the first time since 2017, competing in the men's doubles alongside compatriot Jordan Thompson.&nbsp;
The 30-year-old ranked as high as 13 in the world in 2016 appeared on a list of competitors for Roland Garros, which runs from May 25 to June 8, seen by AFP on Thursday.

He was not going to play in Paris till Thompson's playing partner Max Purcell -- the duo won the US Open title last year -- was slapped with an 18 month doping ban in April.
Kyrgios teamed up with Thompson at the 2017 French Open, reaching the third round.
"After the stuff with Max Purcell, Jordan was looking for a partner and he asked me if I wanted to play," Kyrgios told The Canberra Times.
"We've played at the French Open before, so it'll be good to get out there and play with another fellow Aussie and have a bit of fun."
Kyrgios, Wimbledon singles finalist in 2022, has endured an injury-hit career and hardly played in 2023 and 2024.
He returned to the tour at the start of 2025, but last played in March, losing in the second round of the singles draw at the Miami Open.
His first round win against American qualifier Mackenzie McDonald was the world number 633's first tour-level victory since October 2022.
Kyrgios' last doubles match came at the Australian Open in January, when his partner Thanasi Kokkinakis was forced to retire injured in the first round.
Alongside Kokkinakis, Kyrgios won the doubles at the Australian Open three years ago.

French Open 2025: Aussie Nick Kyrgios set to play at Roland Garros first time since 2017, pairs up with Jordan Thompson for doubles

England's Test captain <a href="https://www.wionews.com/tags/ben-stokes" rel="dofollow">Ben Stokes</a> believes he is in his best ever physical condition and can dominate with bat and ball on his latest comeback from injury.&nbsp;The 33-year-old is set to return in a one-off Test against Zimbabwe in Nottingham next week.
Stokes has not played since tearing his hamstring in New Zealand in December.&nbsp;But having rushed back from a similar injury in the past, he has taken a longer period of downtime to get his recovery right.
"I've worked incredibly hard on all aspects of everything, from my cricket to fitness, and know I'm going to be in a position when I am back on the field to potentially be in physically the best possible shape I have been in," Stokes told Sky Sports."I feel great. Training and playing are completely different. No matter what you do at training, you cannot replicate the intensity your body is put through in a game.
"But in terms of my role as a player -- fourth seamer, batting at six -- trying to dominate every situation I find myself in, whether I've got a bat or a ball in my hand, is what I want to get back doing out on the field on the biggest stage.
"I know I've done it before and it's something I'm very, very confident in myself I can do."
After the clash against Zimbabwe, England face India in a five-match Test series.
Former New Zealand seamer Tim Southee will join the England coaching ranks for those matches and a five-game ODI series against the West Indies as a "specialist skills coach".
Following a short-term consultancy stint, Southee will resume playing duties in The Hundred for the Birmingham Phoenix.
He effectively replaces James Anderson as fast bowling consultant, with England's record wicket-taker set to resume his playing career with Lancashire this week, almost a year on from his farewell Test at Lord's.

Test Captain Ben Stokes determined to 'dominate' on England return

In the latest development surrounding India&rsquo;s five-match away Test series against England starting shortly after <a href="https://www.wionews.com/tags/ipl-2025" rel="dofollow">IPL 2025</a>, <a href="https://www.wionews.com/tags/gautam-gambhir" rel="dofollow">Team India head coach Gautam Gambhir</a> will lead the first batch of players and staff leaving for the UK on June 6. While the BCCI is working on the departure schedule of the Test squad (unannounced yet), the reports suggest that non-IPL-playoffs-bound players shall leave early.
Former India Test captain Rohit Sharma, alongside his longtime teammate and batting veteran Virat Kohli, retired from red-ball cricket just before the squad announcement, sending shockwaves down the cricket fraternity. Their departure meant BCCI selectors would struggle to assemble the best team for the England Tests this time.&nbsp;

Veteran England all-rounder Moeen Ali has pulled out of the Indian Premier League (IPL 2025) owing to personal reasons on Thursday (May 15). Playing for Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) in the IPL 2025, Ali will now miss the remaining two matches of IPL 2025 with KKR all but out of the Playoffs race. On the other hand, Sunil Narine and Andre Russell are back in the squad ahead of the two remaining matches of KKR.
<h2 class="MsoNormal" style="text-align: justify;">Moeen Ali opts out of IPL 2025</h2>
With the IPL 2025 set to resume on Saturday (May 17), Ali pulled out of the season in a blow for the franchise. He played in six matches in the IPL 2025, scalping six wickets while his best bowling figures were 23/2. The decision comes as a surprise for many despite him not being part of the white-ball series against the West Indies.
On the other hand, Sunil Narine and Andre Russell are back in the squad, having left India after the near-war situation between India and Pakistan. Narine was the stand-in skipper for the final few matches before the season was halted as Ajinkya Rahane was injured.
Narine has been impressive this season for KKR in IPL 2025. He has scored 215 runs with a best of 44 while scalping 10 wickets in 11 matches. Comparatively, Russell is not at his best in the IPL and faced criticism from senior players.
In 12 matches of IPL 2025, Russell has bagged eight wickets while scoring 167 runs for the defending champions.

As things stand, KKR need a near-miracle to reach the IPL Playoffs as their fate is not in their hands. KKR need to win both matches, expecting the other Mumbai Indians to lose their remaining matches as well. They will need Delhi to beat Mumbai in their head-to-head contest, hoping the former loses the remaining matches.
The above set of results will only see KKR finish level on points with Delhi Capitals, with Net Run Rate deciding the outcome for the final Playoff spot.

<a href="https://www.wionews.com/tags/erling-haaland" rel="dofollow">Erling Haaland</a> said <a href="https://www.wionews.com/tags/manchester-city" rel="dofollow">Manchester City</a> must deliver in the FA Cup final on Saturday to salvage something from a "horrific" season that saw them deposed as English champions for the first time in five years.
City face Crystal Palace at Wembley, aiming to avoid a first trophyless campaign since Pep Guardiola's debut season in charge in 2016/17.
Guardiola's men sit fourth in the Premier League, 18 points adrift of champions Liverpool, and in a battle just to secure a top-five finish and Champions League football next season in their final two league matches.
City were also dumped out of the Champions League before the last 16 for the first time in 12 years by Real Madrid in the play-off round.
"This season has been tough," Haaland told the BBC. "It is not nice to lose so many games. It is boring and not fun. That's why we need to finish well and get a trophy.
"It is a good habit to reach Wembley, and always important to win trophies. We have the FA Cup final to play for, and in a horrific season, we still managed to do this."
Haaland is set to start the final after making his comeback from a six-week injury layoff in last weekend's 0-0 draw at Southampton.
Ballon d'Or winner Rodri has missed most of the season with a serious knee injury, while City have been beset by fitness troubles for a series of key defenders.
But Haaland said that should offer no excuses to a club with the resources at City's disposal.
"Of course, we have had injuries throughout the season. But we should not search for excuses," added the Norwegian.
"Every single one of us hasn't been good enough and we haven't been at our best, so when you are not at your best, you aren't going to win games in this country because it's so hard."

With the IPL 2025 on hold due to the Indo-Pak war, international stars were forced to return back home. So far in 11 matches of the IPL 2025, David has scored 186 runs with a best of an unbeaten 50. He has an average of 93 while striking at 194. Interestingly, the next time steps on the field for RCB will be his 50th match in the IPL. <o:p></o:p>
On the other hand, RCB were also boosted by the return of Romario Shepherd and Liam Livingstone. However, the franchise is still sweating on the return of speedster Josh Hazlewood and Lungi Ngidi. Hazlewood is nursing a shoulder injury, while Ngidi&rsquo;s availability in the Playoffs is still doubtful due to him being named in the South African squad for the World Test Championship (WTC) final.

Star Sri Lankan batter Kusal Mendis has ditched the <a href="https://www.wionews.com/tags/psl-2025" rel="dofollow">Pakistan Super League (PSL)</a> for his maiden IPL stint, replacing Gujarat Titans&rsquo; Jos Buttler for the <a href="https://www.wionews.com/tags/ipl-2025" rel="dofollow">IPL 2025</a> Playoffs. England selectors named Buttler in the ODI squad for the home series against West Indies, which begins May 29 - the same day when the playoffs get underway, making him unavailable for the knockout games this season.
Last Friday (May 9), the BCCI suspended IPL 2025 for a week due to escalating tensions between India and Pakistan; likewise, the Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) also suspended PSL 2025, later trying to stage it outside the country, but failed.&nbsp;

Mendis was playing in the competition for Quetta Gladiators until last week but decided against returning (when PSL 2025 resumes on May 17) due to perceived safety concerns. Instead, he opted to accept GT&rsquo;s offer to play as a replacement for one of their top scorers this season, Buttler, in the IPL 2025 Playoffs.&nbsp;
For the record, Mendis never featured in the cash-rich league before, making it his debut season should he get a game.&nbsp;
<h2>Time to unleash Mendis</h2>
Although Gujarat Titans have two wicketkeeping options in their squads, Anuj Rawat and Kumar Khushagra, Mendis&rsquo; form could force them to replace an overseas top-order batter with another. Meanwhile, Mendis scored 143 runs in five contested PSL matches this season, striking at 168.

What is the latest on India&rsquo;s Test captaincy front? Have the selectors and the coach decided on <a href="https://www.wionews.com/tags/shubman-gill" rel="dofollow">Shubman Gill</a> as <a href="https://www.wionews.com/tags/rohit-sharma" rel="dofollow">Rohit Sharma</a>&rsquo;s replacement, or are they contemplating picking ace seamer <a href="https://www.wionews.com/tags/jasprit-bumrah" rel="dofollow">Jasprit Bumrah</a> as the new red-ball leader? Nothing seems to have been finalised yet.
Before it all came crashing down for India&rsquo;s Test Team following the BGT Down Under, premier quick Bumrah was to succeed Rohit in Tests. He had led the side in two matches against Australia, in Perth and Sydney, where Rohit remained absent for different reasons. Although India won the series opener at the Optus Stadium, their only win on the tour, Bumrah had to leave the final Test at the SCG due to a back issue, with them losing it inside three days.
Bumrah's fitness has been the management&rsquo;s ultimate worry, having already lost him for close to eight to ten months earlier. Even though India has found success in his absence, with the 2025 Champions Trophy triumph being the latest instance, they would need Bumrah on the England tour, especially after India&rsquo;s Test batting lost its two jewels in Rohit and Virat Kohli to Test retirements.

Also, considering the consensus that Bumrah must not play more than two Tests on the trot, the BCCI could find it tough to replace him with someone as the Test captain for just one game and then return to Bumrah whenever he returns. Avoiding such complications would be on the agenda when head coach Gautam Gambhir and Ajit Agarkar-led selection committee sit to pick the squad for the England Tests.&nbsp;
Per several reports, the BCCI selectors would unveil the new Test captain on May 23, probably announcing the Test squad alongside.
<h2>Why no Gill then?</h2>
If not Jasprit Bumrah, then why not Shubman Gill? What is stopping the BCCI selectors from picking the captain for the future?&nbsp;
It&rsquo;s because Gill has yet to crack the overseas Test code.&nbsp;
India&rsquo;s top-order batter moved places since the away West Indies&rsquo; Tests last year, dropping to number three. Although he has been a fantastic ODI batter since his debut, scoring runs for fun in all conditions, Gill has been a pale shadow of that in Tests, averaging just over 35 in 32 matches.&nbsp;
With India coming into this series on the back of two successive losses against New Zealand and Australia, conceding another Test series would be a disaster; also, knowing the selectors have a task at hand to pick a new-look batting order, burdening Gill with added responsibility would do no good.
Besides, barring these two, KL Rahul and Rishabh Pant are the remaining options India has.&nbsp;
Meanwhile, it remains to be seen who the selectors pick as India&rsquo;s next Test captain.&nbsp;

Though they earlier stated that the board decided against extending NOCs to its WTC Final-bound players, the latest report suggests that they have pushed back their preparation date for the summit clash against Australia at the Lord&rsquo;s starting June 11.&nbsp;

CSA had issued NOCs to all IPL-bound players till May 25 - the original date of the IPL final; however, following unprecedented circumstances that forced the BCCI to suspend the tournament, everything went up for a toss. Later, the Indian Board released a revised schedule, which sees IPL 2025 resuming on May 17 and ending on June 3. This schedule change has put plenty of boards and players in a tight spot over managing and honouring franchise and international cricket commitments.
As reported earlier, CSA's director of national teams and high performance, Enoch Nkwe, said, "It is an individual decision, obviously, to return or to play or continue.&nbsp;
&ldquo;One thing we've made clear, and we are finalising this with the IPL and the BCCI, is sticking to our original plan when it comes to the WTC preparations."
"May 26 is the latest for the Test guys to come back. The original plans don't change because the No. 1 priority is the WTC final. We've been engaging with them over the last day or two to make sure we're all on the same page."
<h2>Change in plan</h2>
It changed quickly. A West Australian report, also carried out by several leading publications, confirms that Nkwe stated a new date for South Africa&rsquo;s training date for the WTC Final.

However, he can still be part of the <a href="https://www.wionews.com/tags/delhi-capitals" rel="dofollow">Delhi Capitals (DC)</a> squad for the remainder of the tournament. In the latest development, as explained and confirmed by the Bangladesh Cricket Board (BCB), the board is working on managing Mustafizur's national and franchise cricket commitments.

Delhi roped in Mustafizur as Jake Fraser-McGurk&rsquo;s replacement for the remainder of the season. The BCB denied his participation by saying they never received any request for the No-Objection Certificate (NOC) required in this case. It put his IPL 2025 participation in jeopardy.

Per the latest report, the BCB continues to analyse the India-Pakistan cross-border situation, which forced the BCCI and the PCB to postpone their respective premier T20 tournaments. While the BCCI suspended IPL 2025 for a week owing to escalating tensions between both countries, the PCB tried staging the remainder of PSL 2025 outside of Pakistan in the UAE, only to face rejection from the Emirates Cricket Board (ECB).
Though both tournaments will resume shortly, the BCB finds itself in a tight spot over offering NOCs to the players playing across both leagues. A BCB source close to the information revealed they have no issues allowing Mustafizur to play in IPL 2025, but should that happen, they then have to offer NOCs to two other players, Rishad Hossain and Nahid Rana, who played in PSL 2025.
Given the board is conscious of making a rational decision here, they are also keen to avoid getting into an uncomfortable situation with their neighbouring boards &ndash; BCCI and PCB.
"We are not saying that we won't let Mustafizur play in the IPL for the Delhi Capitals, but at the same time, there is a thing called national commitment, and he needs to fulfil that," a BCB director said on request of anonymity.&nbsp;
"Along with that, if we had released him in that case, what would we have done with the two cricketers who took part in PSL, as they could have asked why we were not releasing them?
"We don't want to be in a position that allows any Board to point a finger at us," the source continued, as quoted by Cricbuzz.
<h2>How can he play in IPL 2025?</h2>
The latest report suggests that there are two possible scenarios.
Mustafizur could be released following the T20Is concluding on May 21 (Monday), and he could then link up with the DC team for the remainder of the IPL 2025 games. In another case, should Bangladesh release him after the first T20I (May 17), the left-armer would be available for DC&rsquo;s three league games, while the number could increase should DC qualify for the playoffs.&nbsp;
If they fail to progress further in the tournament, Mustafizur could re-link with the Bangladesh team for the away T20Is against Pakistan starting May 27.&nbsp; The BCB, however, awaits the government&rsquo;s directives regarding their tour of Pakistan.&nbsp;

Bologna ended a 51-year wait for a major trophy on Wednesday after winning the Italian Cup with a 1-0 victory over AC Milan, who slumped to yet another painful defeat in a horror season.
Dan Ndoye scored the goal in the 53rd minute, which gave Bologna a historic victory, their first honour since last winning the cup in 1974.

Bologna hadn't even been in a major tournament final since last winning the Italian Cup -- the second of their two domestic cup triumphs.
But coach Vincenzo Italiano has done a brilliant job since arriving to replace Thiago Motta at Bologna, who have won the Italian championship seven times but last did so in 1964.
"It was a tough match, but we won it for us, for the city and for the fans," said Ndoye to broadcaster Mediaset.
"We did everything right, we scored at the right moment and the worked like a true team."
Wednesday's victory was also Italiano's first major honour as a coach, as he lost three finals with his previous club Fiorentina, including the 2023 Italian Cup final.
Italiano was held aloft by his jubilant players as Bologna fans danced and cried in the Stadio Olimpico stands after seeing what many thought they'd never see.
"We deserved this, especially as we played great tonight. It was a fantastic performance," said Italiano.
"We've crowned an incredible year with the cup, which is what our fans deserved."
Milan were crowned European champions the same season they last won the cup in 2003, a different time for a club once owned by deceased former Italian prime minister Silvio Berlusconi.
Rivals Inter Milan are in the Champions League final and trying to retain their Serie A title, while Milan are in a battle to qualify for Europe after missing out on the cup.
Sergio Conceicao's team sit eighth in Serie A, three points behind Roma, who sit in the Conference League spot and host Milan on Sunday.
<h2><hl2>Bologna triumph</hl2></h2>
Just before kick-off, Bologna supporters unfurled a huge display honouring the players who won the cup in 1974 and provided colourful and enthusiastic backing for their team throughout a scrappy contest.
Santiago Castro had the first chance of the game for Bologna in the eighth minute but failed to get enough on a vicious inswinging cross to divert it past Mike Maignan, who was already committed in the Milan goal.
Bologna survived a huge scare moments later when Alex Jimenez got down the right and drilled in a low cross, which Sam Beukema diverted straight at his goalkeeper, Lukasz Skorupski, who was then lucky enough for Luka Jovic to smash the rebound right down his throat.
The match became a more tense affair after that, and it wasn't until Ndoye's winner that either team had another opportunity, the Switzerland attacker shimmying and lashing home after Riccardo Orsolini was tackled in the penalty area by Theo Hernandez.
Milan have been comeback specialists this season, including when beating Bologna 3-1 in the league last weekend.
But they only mustered up one other chance of note in the 71st minute, when substitute Santiago Gimenez's dreadful first touch effectively passed Hernandez's low cross to Skorupski.
Bologna successfully, if somewhat awkwardly, hacked away Milan's limp attempts to attack, and collapsed to the ground in exhaustion once referee Maurizio Mariani blew the final whistle.

Bologna end 51-year wait for glory with Italian Cup triumph over AC Milan

In a massive boost to the <a href="https://www.wionews.com/tags/royal-challengers-bangalore-rcb" rel="dofollow">Royal Challengers Bengaluru (RCB)</a>, the overseas duo of Romario Shepherd and Liam Livingstone has rejoined the franchise ahead of the <a href="https://www.wionews.com/tags/ipl-2025" rel="dofollow">IPL 2025</a> resumption on Saturday (May 17). With the tournament restarting following a nine-day suspension due to escalating tensions between India and Pakistan, the RCB receives this morale-pushing news amid foreign players' logistical concerns surrounding the international calendar.
Shepherd is among a handful of West Indies players who returned to India alongside the <a href="https://www.wionews.com/tags/kolkata-knight-riders" rel="dofollow">Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR)</a> duo of Andre Russell, Sunil Narine and their mentor, Dwayne Bravo. While Shepherd is part of West Indies&rsquo; white-ball squad for the away England series starting May 29 - the day IPL 2025 gets underway, Cricket West Indies (CWI) is yet to clarify if all those picked for the international series leave the IPL 2025 midway.
On the other hand, Livingstone has also rejoined the franchise, which sits in second place on the points table with 16 points from 11 contested matches. Liam&rsquo;s England teammate Jacob Bethell has already rejoined the team; though the rookie all-rounder is part of the England squad for the home series against WI, the ECB dropped Liam from both ODI and T20I squads.&nbsp;
Bethell will remain available for RCB&rsquo;s next two matches - against KKR and SunRisers Hyderabad (SRH) &ndash; but fly home before the Lucknow Super Giants (LSG) tie. Per the latest reports, the ECB and several other boards decided against extending NOCs to their players beyond the decided date earlier (May 25) to honour international commitments.
<h2>No words on the overseas pace duo</h2>
On the other hand, the RCB awaits confirmation on its overseas pace duo of <a href="https://www.wionews.com/tags/josh-hazlewood" rel="dofollow">Josh Hazlewood</a> and Lungi Ngidi.&nbsp;
Hazlewood is nursing a shoulder niggle he suffered earlier this month and would have missed the tournament anyway had it not been interrupted. Ngidi, who made his RCB debut against Chennai Super Kings (CSK) and is also part of South Africa&rsquo;s WTC Final squad against Australia, might remain available for just two matches before linking with the South Africa squad.
The WTC-bound South African players will leave the IPL by May 25.&nbsp;
Meanwhile, Phil Salt, who missed the last two games for the franchise due to illness, will remain available for the remainder of the tournament. He is part of the T20I squad against the West Indies, which begins June 6, three days after the IPL 2025 final.&nbsp;

<a href="https://www.wionews.com/tags/real-madrid" rel="dofollow">Real Madrid</a> snatched a last-gasp 2-1 win over Real Mallorca on Wednesday in La Liga to delay <a href="https://www.wionews.com/tags/barcelona" rel="dofollow">Barcelona</a>'s title celebrations.
Los Blancos cut the gap on the Catalan giants to four points ahead of Barcelona's visit to neighbours Espanyol on Thursday, where they can wrap up the title with a victory.
Trailing for much of the game after Martin Valjent's 11th-minute opener, two second-half goals for Madrid ensured their arch-rivals did not claim their 28th La Liga title just yet.
Madrid needed to win to deny Barca, and Kylian Mbappe's equaliser and Jacobo Ramon's 95th-minute strike allowed them to do just that.
Los Blancos' defeat by Barcelona on Sunday in the Clasico left the Catalans on the brink of the title, but Carlo Ancelotti's side showed fighting spirit in the final stages against Mallorca.
"The team played very well, it fought a lot, played with a lot of intensity, and it was a totally deserved victory," said Ancelotti.
"We are happy because we want to finish the season well, and this game didn't start well, but afterwards we did very well in all senses."
Madrid coach Ancelotti is departing to take charge of the Brazilian national team at the end of a disappointing season in the Spanish capital, and has two games left in his post.
The Italians' Madrid side, riddled with injury problems, were without Vinicius Junior and Rodrygo Goes among other star names as Mallorca visited the Santiago Bernabeu.
"Having 12 players injured is very strange, we were able to overcome the absences with a good attitude, individually and as a group," added Ancelotti.
The islanders, ninth, are hoping for European football for the first time since 2004 and put up a strong performance.
Madrid's 18-year-old striker Endrick, whom Ancelotti may call up for Brazil in the future, came close early on but Leo Roman tipped his effort away.
Mallorca took an early lead when Valjent received the ball on the right of the box in an ocean of space.
The defender took his shot early and beat Belgian goalkeeper Thibaut Courtois, making his 200th La Liga appearance.
Roman made a fine save to thwart England international Jude Bellingham as Madrid pushed for an equaliser.
The stopper, who also excelled for Mallorca in a recent narrow defeat at Barcelona, denied Mbappe and then Fede Valverde before the break.
Eventually, Mbappe found a breakthrough for Madrid after 68 minutes, with some superb footwork to escape three Mallorca players trying to shut him down, and he drilled past Roman.
It was Mbappe's 40th goal of a productive season on a personal level, although his team are set to end it without a major trophy and having been beaten four times by Barcelona across all competitions.
<h2><hl2>'Good for the academy'</hl2></h2>
Mateu Morey should have put Mallorca back ahead almost instantly after a Jacobo error, but Courtois denied him one-on-one.
Roman produced yet another fine save from Arda Guler's drive before Valjent headed Mbappe's effort off the line and to safety with the goalkeeper out of position.
It looked like, despite Madrid's efforts, they were not going to find a winner, but 20-year-old defender Jacobo lifted a dropping ball over Roman's head as the Mallorca defence hesitated.
Barcelona took 40 shots in their 1-0 win over Mallorca in April, and Madrid produced 39.
"Leo Roman had a great game," said his opposite number, Courtois.
"(Jacobo) was confident and in the end he scored that goal... it's very good for the youth academy, there are a lot of kids trying to get through.
"When they have to be there, they are, we Madrid fans have to be proud of the academy."

'Good for the academy' Mateu Morey should have put Mallorca back ahead almost instantly after a Jacobo error, but Courtois denied him one-on-one. "When they have to be there, they are, we Madrid fans have to be proud of the academy." Cricket South Africa (CSA) has reportedly retreated on its stand of early return for Indian Premier League (IPL 2025) bound players after a high-level conversation within the board. With South Africa participating in their maiden World Test Championship (WTC) final, CSA, South Africa's apex cricketing body, had demanded that players playing in the IPL 2025 return by Ma 26. However, with the IPL 2025 rescheduled, there was an interest from certain players to stay in India to complete the season. <o:p></o:p>
<h2 class="MsoNormal" style="text-align: justify;">CSA to retreat from policy?<o:p></o:p></h2>
"Yes, we want the Test players back on 26th, but hence I say the matter is getting finalised by higher-ups," Enoch Nkwe, the CSA Director of Cricket, clarified to Cricbuzz on Wednesday (May 14) morning. "(We) can't confirm yet until the matter is settled between the two governing bodies (CSA and BCCI)," the CSA official said. <o:p></o:p>
On Tuesday, CSA announced the squad for the WTC final against Australia, starting on June 20 at the iconic Lord&rsquo;s cricket ground. This squad includes several players representing IPL franchises and were set to return home on May 26 after completing the season. <o:p></o:p>
However, the India-Pakistan near-war situation saw the IPL extended by a week, meaning players had to make a decision to either return on the earlier deadline day of May 26 or seek an NOC from the board.

While CSA was first against the extension, it seems there has been a breakthrough in the conversation, and players will stay with their franchises if they vow to. <o:p></o:p>
If this is the case and any South African player plays in the IPL 2025 scheduled for June 3, they will have only one week to prepare for the WTC final, which starts on June 11 in London. The one week period will also include travel from India to South Africa and then to England.<o:p></o:p>
