Former India Test vice-captain Ajinkya Rahane revealed that talks about joining the inaugural European T20 Premier League began on the same day he announced his international retirement. Rahane will represent Amsterdam Flames in the franchise league, which will be held in Ireland and the Netherlands from Aug 26 to Sep 20. Speaking to PTI in an interview arranged by the ETPL, Rahane said the opportunity came soon after his retirement and made him think about the next phase of his career. “When I announced my retirement, I think the same day this opportunity came up. I took a day to probably think through it. I have reached to international level with participation in Singapore National Age Group Championship earlier in March. There it was a wonderful exposure with the strong athletes. Also in the month of June, I was in Ahmedabad for my Junior Nationals. It was very tough as swimming is something where you need to focus on a lot of techniques which makes it one of the hardest sports.Last year, at the National School Games was one of my best milestones I have achieved because I broke the 13-year-old record with my personal best which was 2:24.Before joining Somaiya Sports Academy, I trained under Arjuna awardee and Olympic swimming coach Mr. Virdhawal Khade. Every morning 5 to 7.30 am I practice and then again in evening as per my schedule, sometimes alternately we have gym or maybe again swimming at Somaiya Sports Academy.
Can you talk about the technical aspects of your specific event which is 200m butterfly?
My event is kind of one of the most difficult event in the whole swimming. It's 200 meters butterfly in which you have to do 4 laps continuous which is very tiring and your muscles get fatigued. And for that event, I have trained for almost five to six years continuously. 2.17 seconds is the India best time and my time is 2.24. I have to reduce my timing and that's the main goal.During training, we have race-based training. we have pull, we have drills, and I have to work on that every single day to achieve my aim. Also, fly is a stroke that you have to work on a lot of techniques because if you are just ruining up your techniques, you might get DQ also. Also those little technique things like working on your turns, your starts, keep practicing, doing short rest workouts, checking up heart rates so that's the main whole criteria of fly swimming.
When you went to Singapore, you met with a lot of athletes of your age group, what were the similarities or the gaps you found and how being at Somaiya Sports Academy with the facilities and the coaches you have, those gaps are being bridged?
I have been to many foreign countries in swimming for training and I have seen their structure and Somaiya has a similar structure. As in, as a swimmer we just don't swim, we also need gym and strength training. When I was in France for training, we used to swim and they used to check our heart rate, they used to shoot our videos underwater to keep an eye on what kind of techniques are we doing. In gym training they check that what's the strength of your muscles and at what end are you lacking, or if you are not pulling properly and all that is here in Somaiya Sports Academy performance lab as well.
What is your goal or aspirations about yourself in the sport?
I'm aiming for the 2028 Olympics. The Chinese and Japanese girls of my age are doing way much better than us and if they can achieve such a good timing so we can do it. That's what my aim is - to represent India. India are set to face Sri Lanka in a two-Test series, with the first match beginning on Saturday (Aug 15) in Galle. With India currently fifth in the World Test Championship (WTC) standings and the next WTC final less than a year away, the Shubman Gill-led team will be looking for a series win. The Men in Blue are currently fifth in the World Test Championship standings with a 48.15 per cent points percentage, behind fourth-placed Bangladesh (58.33 per cent) and ahead of sixth-placed Sri Lanka (41.67 per cent), making the upcoming series crucial for both teams' qualification hopes. Bangladesh, however, have a tough schedule ahead, as they will first host the West Indies before travelling to Australia for a challenging series.
What happens if India win the Sri Lanka series?
India can win the series either 1-0 or 2-0, but if India win one Test and the other ends in a draw, they will collect 16 points from the series and their total will increase to 68 points, while their points percentage will rise to 51.51 per cent. Sri Lanka's points percentage would fall to 33.33 per cent in that scenario. A 2-0 win would give India the maximum possible boost, as the two victories would earn them 24 points, taking their total to 76 after 11 Tests. Their points percentage would increase to 57.58 per cent. Also Read - IPL 2027: Pandya to be pursued by CSK and KKR? India will look to improve their World Test Championship standing when they face Sri Lanka in a crucial two-Test series, with a clean sweep boosting their qualification hopes.

Hardik Pandya's future with Mumbai Indians hangs in the balance after the franchise missed the playoffs for two straight seasons under his captaincy, finishing near the bottom of the table in 2026. MI's post-season review is still underway, but speculation over a trade has only intensified, with the pre-auction window open until December. Chennai Super Kings have emerged as strong contenders, with Ravichandran Ashwin fuelling the buzz with his predictions. Whether Pandya stays or moves, his next destination could reshape IPL 2027's power balance significantly.
What does Ashwin think about Pandya's next team?
Speaking on his YouTube channel, Ashwin predicted five-time champions Chennai Super Kings (CSK), and three-time winner Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR), as the next possible teams for star all-rounder Hardik Pandya. Also Read - 'Recovery management and no prehab': Strength and conditioning expert shares reason behind injuries in Indian cricket“Don’t count out Hardik going to a franchise other than CSK or KKR. The talks are that CSK will give Dube and a pacer, while KKR gives away Cameron Green. What happens if Green decides to focus on the Ashes next year? If CSK give away Dube and one Indian pacer to get Hardik, they get strong but not invincible. However, if KKR get Hardik, they suddenly look very strong. KKR will become a lethal batting lineup with Hardik. These are teams with five, five and three titles, so MI have to think how they can ensure one of these teams doesn’t leapfrog them,” he added.
Why CSK and KKR make sense?
CSK recently parted ways with Stephan Fleming and with Dhoni on the sidelines more often than not, Pandya could provide much needed stability to a young team led by Ruturaj Gaikwad. Pandya can offer a solid base in the middle order while chipping in with overs and offering captaincy inputs as well.KKR, on the other hand, are looking for a new captain after Ajinkya Rahane's retirement. KKR have an all-rounder in Cam Green but he can very well choose national duty over IPL, leaving KKR hanging in balance for a genuine all-rounder.

Indian cricket team is currently going through a spate of injuries with the latest one being Jasprit Bumrah, who recently withdrew from upcoming Test series against Sri Lanka. Before him, Washington Sundar and Nitish Kumar Reddy had suffered injuries with B Sai Sudharsan in the squad subject to fitness. In the recent times, it has been observed that players are suffering from injuries more often despite the fitness being focused upon more than ever. The BCCI is also planning to bring more fitness standards to ensure the players remain injury free but the question remains - what is causing the injuries? Also Read - Women's Asia Cup 2026 schedule announced, India vs Pakistan on Sep 5WION spoke to sports strength and conditioning coach Jivesh Bali, who also played cricket for Punjab, about the injuries plaguing the Indian cricket and he pointed out less recovery time as the main reason for the injuries. Jivesh has experience working with athletes in events like Nepal Premier League, World Legends Pro T20 League, and is a certified cricket strength and conditioning training specialist.“If we talk about the injuries, there's nothing to talk about the fitness levels rather than it's about the recovery management. In India, the athletes are suffering from this work overload. The athletes nowadays are being over-trained by the coaches you can say or by the management or by the federation so the recovery is one thing that is the main issue in re-occurring those injuries which athletes are going through.”Bali also spoke about Jasprit Bumrah's case in particular to explain the workload being experienced by the players and said: "Bumrah was continuously playing all three formats, i.e., Test match, ODIs, T20Is before his first injury happened. And because of his packed schedule, there is no time between all those high intensity cricket formats, leaving him no time for the recovery."A single player being pushed to all the three formats leaves little time for recovery and there is so much load on the muscles, joints, complete body that it needs time to recover. And, there is no time for that hence athletes are going through the injuries."There is not a question about their fitness levels or the sports science because India has the world's top notch sports science setups now. The question is the recovery management - 'Are you giving them the proper duration to recover themselves from the high intensity cricket?' Whether it is 5-day, red ball cricket or the white ball cricket."
The BCCI is planning to include the 2K test and they already have the Bronco test. What is the difference if you could talk us about it?
If we talk about Bronco test, there was a drill earlier athletes used to do that was the shuttle run in which there is the distance between 40 meters and 80 meters and then you have to basically run high intensity. The athletes then change direction and have to run back to the cones and then again to the another level so basically this mimics the movements in cricket, such as running between the wicket. The same is being mimicked in the Bronco test in which one has to run between the wickets to and fro. You have to be agile enough to quickly change the direction and then come forward, come back to that position. Basically Bronco test is targeting the high intensity aerobic thing. As for 2K, it is for enhancing cardiovascular conditioning. It helps to get a better resting heart rate, which helps during the match.Bronco test is always a little bit a step higher than the 2k test for pacers, batters, fielders and for the spinners. I'll say both the tests, Bronco and 2K, are more or less equal.
You think that BCCI introducing these standardized Bronco test and 2K fitness test will help reduce the injuries?
These tests are working on the certain physical parameter that is the aerobic endurance and the high intensity. So to work on the injuries, they need to work on many other things like - a specific reason of why the athletes are getting injuries much more often.I was doing that research and realized that athletes are not working on their biomechanics - Just giving you an example, in case of an injury, the athlete goes to the physiotherapist, or to the doctor to get the injury treated. The other perspective which the athletes should be working on is - the prehab part. You know the rehab part, once the injury is done, then there is a rehab. The second perspective which is now booming nowadays is the prehab part to avoid the further more injury happening. For prehab - first is the regular testing of the athletes which includes workload monitoring of the athletes so the management is aware of any potential injuries in future. As for poor biomechanics, if a bowler is getting a recurring knee injuries if could be because of the wrong way of landing the front leg, hip rotation timing, or front foot striking. These all issues need to be monitored on a regular basis to prevent, for example, the knee injury I've talked about. That's the one part you can prevent the knee injuries. Plus, the calendar, the schedule of the BCCI is very much hectic for the athletes. If a single player is playing all the three formats and you are presenting your country at an international level, so it's always high intensity cricket. Then there is domestic cricket as well, then there is IPL as well which leaves no time of recovering. They should be getting the pool of athletes, pool of players who are specialized in the different formats. Whether it is five-day cricket or white-ball, they should be have a different 15 altogether, different 15 for the test cricket, for T20 different 15 and for the ODI cricket different 15.And plus one more thing, the body is not adapting to the like weather changes. The Indian team travels a lot whether it is in India or outside India as well. The body is not acclimatizing to the weather or the nutrition outside. It has to be taken in care of like the nutrition, the recovery management, the neuromuscular fatigue as well - Athletes need to be focusing on that as well and the sports science professionals also. The BCCI has to think about this thing first that they need not to force any player or should not involve every player to play all the three formats. This is one thing which can solve the injury part to some extent.
Also, you have worked with players across the globe of all age groups. How do foreign players or foreign cricket nations assess their players' fitness and what lessons do you think BCCI can take from them?
The athletes in the foreign countries know what they are training for, the purpose for their training. In India, we can say the athletes are just in sport specific training, they are mimicking the movements, but the actual science says if you want to do the sport specific thing, you can only train the physical parameters. One has to work on the physical parameters. If you are doing drills like mimicking the movements of the sport then it is just a waste of time. Instead of that, you should be focusing on the force development, energy transfer from lower body to upper body, your rotational skills, and your anti-rotational stability. All these efforts need to be trained not just the movements. You have to train the physical parameters, agility, reflexes, force development, energy transfers, speed, and power. These are the physical parameters which I like feel like the players in the different countries are working on rather than focusing on any of the other fancy drills. Also, their (foreign countries) recovery prospect is top notch. The performance is basically hard work minus your fatigue. In India, the places I have worked, I have worked with seven different including wrestlers, boxers, cyclists, track and field athletes, the cricketers as well, most of the athletes are over-training at their age. And, the injuries are also reoccurring because the competition in India is that much high that a single player wants to play as soon as possible or as soon as he completes his fitness test. Once the fitness test is cleared, you have the green signal, but those tissues need proper recovery as well and joints, tissues need to be progressively overloaded. It's not that you have gone through the injury, you have done the rehab part, you are back to sport and you are ready to play high intensity cricket. It takes time for these things.

Indian grandmaster R Praggnanandhaa continued his impressive run at the 2026 Saint Louis Rapid & Blitz, staying unbeaten and holding on to the sole lead heading into the tournament's final stretch. But the day wasn't without drama as a nerve-jangling pawn endgame against closest rival Javokhir Sindarov nearly cost him his advantage.
Praggnanandhaa gets out of bind with a win
Facing Sindarov, the reigning world championship challenger, Praggnanandhaa found himself staring at what looked like a completely lost pawn endgame. Rather than folding under pressure, the Indian dug in, refusing to concede and hunting for any practical chance the position could offer. His resolve, however, paid off. As the clock ticked down, Sindarov began to falter under time pressure and failed to find the precise sequence needed to convert his advantage. What should have been a full point for the Uzbek turned into a shared half-point, a result that could prove decisive by the time the tournament wraps up.It wasn't the first time this event that Sindarov has shown such resourcefulness under pressure, having escaped tough spots earlier in the week too. This time, though, the tables were turned, and it was Praggnanandhaa who benefited from his opponent's stumble.
Praggnanadhaa gets into the final day with lead
Despite the scare, Praggnanandhaa's overall performance across the week has been built on more than just survival instincts. His run has combined sharp tactical play, sound positional judgement and calm decision-making under pressure. Alongside his defensive heroics against Sindarov, he added further wins and a string of solid draws to remain unbeaten through the blitz rounds.Heading into the final day of action, Praggnanandhaa sits alone at the top of the standings. But with Sindarov, Wesley So and other elite contenders still within striking distance, the tournament remains far from decided. The concluding blitz rounds promise to be tense, with the Indian needing to hold his nerve one more time to seal the title.

Pressure built on FIFA president Gianni Infantino on Thursday over his cancelled plan to bring private finance into football's World Cup, with European governing body UEFA reiterating a threat to boycott tournaments. Pressure built on FIFA president Gianni Infantino on Thursday over his cancelled plan to bring private finance into football's World Cup, with European governing body UEFA reiterating a threat to boycott tournaments. The 56-year-old Swiss official has also been criticised by South American body CONMEBOL. But he did get backing from the Confederation of African Football (CAF). India vs Sri Lanka 3-day warm-up match: All you need to know

India Test captain Shubman Gill suffered a blow to his thumb during a net session on Thursday (Aug 6), just a day before the team’s warm-up game against Sri Lanka A. The setback comes at a time when India have been dealing with several injury concerns across both red-ball and white-ball cricket. India began preparations for the warm-up match and Test series after arriving in Sri Lanka on Tuesday, but Shubman Gill suffered a thumb injury during Thursday's practice and required medical attention. According to reports, the Indian captain was treated by the team’s medical staff before returning to the nets and continuing his practice. The injury is another concern for India, who have already faced several setbacks ahead of the Sri Lanka tour. Nitish Kumar Reddy and Harshit Rana were ruled out earlier, while injuries to Jasprit Bumrah, Sai Sudharsan and Washington Sundar have added to the team’s selection worries. Bumrah has been ruled out of the series, which has opened the door for Auqib Nabi to receive his first India call-up. Shubman Gill suffered a thumb injury ahead of the Sri Lanka A warm-up match, adding to India's growing injury concerns before the Test series.

Sundar is also unlikely to play in the opening Test after picking up a hamstring injury during the ODI series against England. Also Read - History! Former West Indies great sir Vivian Richards has stepped into the growing rift between West Indies coach Daren Sammy and pacer Alzarri Joseph, urging both to bury the hatchet. The controversy erupted after Joseph pulled out of the ongoing Pakistan Test series citing personal reasons, prompting Sammy to say he had "declined selection." Joseph hit back, calling the remark "controversial" and lacking context. Richards weighed in, insisting the coach's public comments "weren't really necessary" and stressing that the duo shared a strong bond during their St Lucia Kings days. The legend warned such fallouts can hurt careers and urged both to rebuild trust quickly.
Richards calls out Sammy's remarks on Alzaari Joseph
"This sometimes hampers guys’ professional careers, you know. Such statements, if it’s not true and stuff like that, a lot of things linger. The two had a great relationship when he was with the St Lucia franchise, so I’m not quite so certain why relations have gone a bit south. The relationship, I know, is much bigger than what we hear on the air so it would be of importance to try and rekindle that. We sometimes misstep at times and so long as we have a heart at times, knowing that sometimes the mistakes that we make, we can always put things together and get these guys going again," said Richards to local news outlet Antigua Observer."I would like to think that Alzarri, and this is just my opinion, would have made it clear as to exactly what the whole stuff was and how he felt and what he meant and I think there are two sides to the story. To get the coach saying – and to me it looks like he (was saying) – he (Alzarri) refused selection, and that’s pushing it in my opinion, it’s pushing it in a very big way. This was Pakistan's first away Test win in three years and first for Babar Azam since returning as Test captain, replacing Shan Masood. Under Babar, Pakistan have won nine out 12 away Tests, though mostly against West Indies, Bangladesh, Zimbabwe, and Sri Lanka, it is the best record for any captain to have led in 10 or more away Tests.

Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney has joined the growing list of Gianni Infantino's critics, saying he has no confidence in the FIFA chief's leadership. It is too late to save his dignity but it is not too late to save football. He should go. Now.”

The comments came after Infantino was forced to scrap his controversial plan to sell World Cup commercial stakes to private investors, following fierce pushback led by UEFA.

Ajinkya Rahane who recently announced his retirement from the international cricket, has credited former skipper Virat Kohli and coach Rai Shastri for changing the mindset inside the dressing room, especially overseas. With Shastri-Kohli at helm, India became the first team to win two consecutive Test series against Australia in Australia. Rahane took over captaincy in the second of those series as Kohli was on paternal leave after the first Test. Rahane led from the front with a sublime 112 at MCG in the second Test after the team was all out for 36 in the opening match, post which Kohli had gone home.
Rahane credits Kohli-Shastri for toughening up India
Speaking on Stick To Cricket Podcast after his retirement about who brought character to the dressing room, Rahane said: "When we started playing in our era, when MS (Dhoni) was going from Test cricket. He was still playing T20Is and ODIs as well but especially in Test cricket, I felt that Virat (Kohli) and Ravi (Shastri) were the guys who toughened up Indian cricket. Especially playing overseas cricket, going aggressive, going bold rather than being defensive and slightly reactive. I think we were always proactive.”
Rahane's numbers for India
Rahane bid adieu after playing 85 Tests, 90 ODIs, and 20 T20Is for India in which he scored 5,077 runs in red ball, 2,962 in 50-over, and 375 runs in the shortest format. His last series for India was and away Test tour of West Indies. Rahane, however, remains active in the domestic circuit in which he plays for Mumbai."Every single day, every innings, every opportunity I got to bat, the dream was always to wear the India cap. I lived by one simple rule – always put my country and my team ahead of myself. I played this game with complete honesty and I have always believed that if your intent is right, the game will always take care of you. Since the time I made my debut as a first-class cricketer, Indian cricket has grown tremendously and I feel so proud to have been a part of it over the last 20 years," he wrote in his retirement post.

Pakistan has clinched a rare away win in the second Test against the West Indies in Port of Spain on Wednesday (Aug 5). Led by opener Abdullah Shafique’s match-winning 160 in the first innings, a gritty 88 by captain Babar Azam, compounded by the spin threat from Sajid Khan and Ali Usman, Pakistan levelled the three-match series 1-1 with an eight-wicket win. Chasing a mere 75 in the final innings, Pakistan lost two wickets before Shafique and Babar cruised them to their first away win in three years. Beaten by 90 runs in the first Test, Pakistan made light work of the hosts, who were already in deep trouble overnight at 103 for six in the second innings, and later got dismissed for 117 half an hour into the start of the day's play. This win gave Pakistan a share of the series similarly to their last campaign in the Caribbean in 2021, when they bounced back after losing the first Test to win the second. Like how their past two tours ended in a 1-1 finish, their last meeting in Pakistan, for two Tests in Multan in January of 2025, also finished with the same scoreline. Also read| 'Dhoni Made Fleming Great': Panesar says ECB made the wrong choice for England Test coach The second Test, however, was a personal triumph for Shafique, who was not included in the original touring party and only flown in last week as a replacement for the injured Shan Masood. Meanwhile, this was also Pakistan's first Test victory at Queen's Park Oval since 1977, when captain Mushtaq Mohammad's all-round performance took his team to a series-levelling win in the fourth Test of a five-match series. England’s Ashes winner Monty Panesar has slammed the ECB’s choice of replacing Test coach Brendon McCullum with his compatriot Stephen Fleming. The ECB sacked McCullum days after Ben Stokes announced his shock Test retirement after the end of the third Test against New Zealand. While they handpicked Joe Root as the new Test captain, overlooking vice-captain Harry Brook for the role, Panesar feels the ECB rushed into naming Fleming as the new Test coach. The spinner, however, picked Michael Vaughan as the right man to lead England’s Test ambitions. Panesar feels it was MS Dhoni who made Fleming look like a great coach in the IPL, and that Fleming wouldn’t have the former Indian captain by his side in this English Test setup. Moreover, with no experience of coaching an international team, Panesar feels Fleming’s appointment could go either way for England. Also read| ECB unhappy with Cricket Ireland for hosting Afghanistan in ODIs – Report “I think the ECB should have appointed Michael Vaughan because he won the Ashes in 2005. Like if Fleming wants his best players for red-ball cricket, and then not making them available for white ball, would McCullum agree to that? Or do they both agree, maybe, for the important white-ball games, some of the Test match players are available for that? “But then possibly for the less important ones, they don’t play. But because McCullum looks up to Fleming, he’ll probably agree to him. Also, with a view to winning the Ashes next year (In England), I think McCullum probably would accommodate Fleming for the Ashes, and then it would reverse for the World Cup (50-over in South Africa) in October,” Panesar argued. Meanwhile, with the Pakistan Tests next for England, Panesar feels the ECB could stick with flatter pitches for the three-match Test series to ensure matches last longer. “Well, I suppose the next Test series is in August now against Pakistan. The corporate hospitality industry is massive in this country. The ECB would want the games to go into at least a fourth day. Pakistan are not at their strongest. So, they may just produce slightly flatter pitches. The ball will probably turn a lot more, I suspect, because of the heatwave we’ve had here over the last couple of months.
