Asia Cup 2025: All you need to know about Super 4 clashes as India vs Pakistan steals spotlight

India wrapped up their Group stage campaign of Asia Cup 2025 with a hat-trick of wins, finishing as table-toppers with a 21-run victory over Oman on Friday (Sep 19) at the Sheikh Zayed Stadium in Abu Dhabi. The win gives India plenty of confidence as they now head into the Super Four stage, where they will face arch-rivals Pakistan on Sunday (Sep 21). For Oman, playing in their maiden tournament, results didn’t quite go their way, but they can take pride in the skill and temperament they displayed against the defending champions.
What happened in India vs Oman game?
After winning the toss and batting first, India scored 188/8 at the Sheikh Zayed Stadium. Captain Suryakumar Yadav gave his batters time in the middle ahead of the Super Four matches. Sanju Samson top-scored with 56 off 45 balls, while Abhishek Sharma smashed a quickfire 38 from just 15 balls. Tilak Varma and Axar Patel chipped in with useful runs to help India post a strong total. Also read | Asia Cup 2025: Arshdeep Singh makes history with 100th T20I wicket against Oman Oman, playing in their first Asia Cup, showed good fight with the bat. Asia Cup 2025, Updated Points Table: India beat Oman to stay unbeaten in Group A

The India vs. Oman match in the 2025 Asia Cup was a memorable game for several reasons. Even though Team India won the match by 21 runs, completing a hat-trick of wins in this continental tournament thus far, the way Oman approached the chase and batted in the second innings was the show’s highlight. The Men in Blue had their match winners in a batter and an incoming seamer, but two Oman players stole the limelight. Let’s look at this game’s top performers. Aamir Kaleem The best player on the day was Oman’s opener and part-timer Aamir Kaleem, who picked two crucial wickets and scored a slow yet tidy fifty at the top. The left-arm orthodox first removed Axar Patel, caught behind, before accounting for the dangerous Shivam Dube, who miscued one to long-off for just five. Also read | India-Pakistan handshake drama turns into a full-fledged Netflix-style series with every twist While opening the innings, the left-handed batter began slowly but picked up pace later in the second half of the chase, completing his fifty (64 off 46 balls), including seven fours and two sixes. He impressed all with his innings but failed to guide his team to victory, as they lost their last league game by 21 runs. Hammad Mirza Another top performer on the day was Oman’s right-handed batter, Hammad Mirza, who slammed a quickfire fifty in the chase, scoring 51 off 33 balls. He even smashed two massive sixes to the tournament’s highest wicket-taker, Kuldeep Yadav, besides hitting five fours in his impressive outing in Abu Dhabi. Shah Faisal Interestingly, another best performer on this list also belongs to Oman, this time a fast bowler. The left-arm quick, Shah Faisal, was perhaps the reason behind India falling shy of scoring a massive total against the minnows. He bowled a peach of a delivery to India’s new poster boy, Shubman Gill, breaking his off stumps in his first over. Much to everyone’s cheers, he also removed Sanju Samson, ending up with two wickets for 23 runs in his four overs. Sanju Samson The lone Indian who seemingly impressed everyone was the keeper-batter Sanju Samson, who scored a gritty fifty (56) in the first innings. Following Gill’s wicket, Samson and Abhishek Sharma held India’s innings together. He stood at the crease for just over 16 overs, building stands with other batters.

Benfica appointed Jose Mourinho as their coach on Thursday (Sep 18), with the Portuguese returning to work in his homeland 21 years after leaving Porto for Chelsea. The 62-year-old, who also coached Real Madrid and Manchester United amongst other clubs, was sacked by Turkish side Fenerbahce in August after Benfica beat them in the Champions League play-offs. Mourinho has signed a contract "to run until the end of the 2026/27 season", Benfica said in a statement, with an option for either party to end the deal at the end of the current campaign. The two-time European champions sacked Bruno Lage after a shock defeat in their Champions League opener against Azerbaijani minnows Qarabag on Tuesday. Mourinho will soon face reunions against former sides Chelsea and Porto, in the Champions League on September 30 and in the Primeira Liga on October 5, respectively. Also read | Real Madrid defender to stand trial in underage sex video case "I come to Benfica at a different stage in my career, and as a person... we transform for the better," Mourinho told reporters, sitting alongside Benfica president Rui Costa. "I'm more altruistic, less self-centred, I think less about myself and more about the good I can do for others, the joy I can bring to others. I'm not the important thing -- Benfica is important." After starting out, his coaching career as an assistant to Bobby Robson and then Louis van Gaal at Barcelona, Mourinho made the step up to head coach at Benfica in September 2000. He quit after just 11 matches and then, after impressing at Uniao de Leiria, he joined the Eagles' fierce rivals, Porto, and guided them to back-to-back league titles and the Champions League crown in 2004. That set him on the path to a successful career coaching Chelsea, Inter Milan and Real Madrid before his fortunes dived after joining Manchester United in 2016. The stiff deadlock between the Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) and the apex body (ICC) over the removal of Asia Cup match referee Andy Pycroft could have turned ugly had it not been about a specific high-profile person within the ICC, an Indian, who led the negotiations between the two, and was solely responsible for blocking PCB’s request in the handshake saga.
