Just 750 balls were all that it took for Australia to beat Bangladesh by an innings and 51 runs to win the second Test and level the two-match Test series 1-1. Mitchell Starc returned with 10 wickets in Mackay, which hosted its maiden Test, the second-shortest on Australian soil and overall, the fourth-shortest, as Australia buried the Darwin ghost to sit at the top of the WTC standings. “A much better week,” Starc, who won the Player of the Match award, said. “We knew we were not at our best in Darwin. Bangladesh played really well. Take nothing away from them there. What we expected from ourselves this week is what we got, particularly with the ball on a wicket that aided us with the ball,” he added.
Shanto Rues Missed Chances
Shoriful, on the other hand, enjoyed his breathtaking spells against the mighty Aussies, dismissing heavyweights like Travis Head, Marnus Labuschagne and Steve Smith. His first-innings masterclass helped Bangladesh wrap up Australia’s innings on 210. However, it was Bangladesh’s batting that let them down, and captain Shanto admitted it in his post-match speech. "We know how good Australia are. They showed their character. We didn't play our best in this Test match. This was different conditions. A little extra bounce and swing in the air. It was challenging for us. "It was quite a difficult wicket to bat on, to be very honest. We need to be consistent, and I believe if we get more chances in similar conditions, it will help us,” Shanto said.

Mitchell Starc was again on a hat-trick in Bangladesh’s second innings on day two of the ongoing second Test in Mackay after Shoriful Islam’s career-best figures of 7/48 rattled Australia on 210. While tailender Nathan Lyon remained unbeaten on 32 off 64 balls, Cameron Green departed on 67 to Shoriful before Taijul Islam wrapped up the innings with Josh Hazlewood’s dismissal. Leading by 146 runs, Australia needed early wickets to push Bangladesh’s backs against the wall, and they turned to their veteran quick Starc, who picked up two wickets on two balls. Captain Pat Cummins bagged one as Bangladesh went to lunch for 39 for three, trailing by 107 runs. Starc was once again on a roll early into Bangladesh’s second innings, as he picked up his first wicket in his second over, removing opener Shadman Islam on one, caught at point. India's Gayatri Gopichand and Treesa Jolly clinched the bronze medal at the BWF World Championships 2026 after putting up a determined fight against defending champions and world no. 1 pair Liu Sheng Shu and Tan Ning in the women's doubles semifinal on Saturday (August 22). The Indian duo, ranked no. 39 in the world and previously placed inside the top 10, pushed the Chinese pair hard before losing 21-18, 13-21, 8-21 in a match that lasted one hour and 11 minutes at the Indira Gandhi Stadium in New Delhi. Their bronze medal ensured that India's remarkable record of winning at least one medal at every edition of the World Championships remained intact. Playing before an enthusiastic home crowd, Gayatri and Treesa made a strong start and stunned the defending champions by claiming the opening game. Treesa spearheaded India's attacking play, producing powerful smashes from both the front and rear court. Gayatri complemented her partner with quick movement, precise control and effective midcourt play. The Indians displayed excellent composure in the first game. Trailing 15-18, they produced a stunning comeback by winning six consecutive points to take the game 21-18. Liu and Tan, however, responded decisively in the second game. The Chinese pair opted for longer rallies and patiently waited for openings rather than attempting to force the pace. Also Read: Former world champion boxer Zolani Tete shot dead outside his home in South Africa After the score was level at 12-12, the defending champions shifted gears and reeled off eight straight points to win the second game 21-13 and level the match. The Chinese duo carried that momentum into the deciding game, taking control early and denying the Indians an opportunity to reproduce their first-game intensity. Liu and Tan eventually wrapped up the third game 21-8 to book their place in the final. Despite the loss, the result represents a major achievement for Gayatri and Treesa. Entering the tournament as an unseeded pair, the Indians defeated several highly ranked opponents on their path to the semi-finals. Their bronze medal further underlines the growing strength of Indian women's doubles badminton on the international stage and demonstrates that Gayatri and Treesa have the ability to compete against the world's best.

IND vs SL, 2nd Test: When and where to watch live streaming in India?

Team India head coach Gautam Gambhir has slammed the hype around Test rankings and talks about India’s slump in red-ball cricket. For the first time since beating West Indies in a home Test series in October, India won a Test match in Galle earlier this week. India, the two-time WTC finalists, currently sit fifth in the ongoing cycle with five wins, four losses, and a draw in 10 contested matches. For India to qualify for their third WTC final, they must at least win six of their remaining eight matches; Gambhir, however, feels no outside noise can affect his goal: to win ICC trophies for India. "Rankings do not matter. We are not struggling. Since the England tour, we have played reasonable Test cricket," Gambhir said ahead of the Colombo Test. Also read| Rahul Dravid backs 15-year-old Vaibhav Sooryavanshi to lead Test cricket revival Since Virat Kohli and Rohit Sharma’s Test retirements last year, India drew the away Test series in England (2-2), only beat the West Indies at home (2-0) but suffered a clean sweep against South Africa (0-2) in November – their second since losing a three-match home Test series (0-3) to New Zealand in late 2024. Even though India’s Test cricket is not close to its best, Gambhir feels the team hasn’t performed badly in Tests, and it’s going through a transition period. "My job is to win trophies, not to garner views and likes. We’re not doing too badly in Test cricket since England, and this team is going through a transition phase," he added. However, in their first away Test on this tour, India beat Sri Lanka by 165 runs, with spinners doing the major damage. Newcomer Manav Suthar has become an emerging star following his second five-wicket haul in only his second Test, and a maiden 10-wicket haul in the game. On the contrary, ace spinner Kuldeep Yadav has struggled to trouble the batters across formats. Speaking on providing him with an extended rope despite his lean patch, Gambhir said, "We will try to field the best bowling attack that can get us 20 wickets. Kuldeep is a good bowler, and sometimes it's up to the captain as well.”

India spin bowling coach Sairaj Bahutule has backed Kuldeep Yadav ahead of the second Test against Sri Lanka, saying the left-arm wrist-spinner bowled very well in Galle despite having to adjust his role according to the match situation. “He’s been bowling extremely well. It’s just that the situations that arose in Galle, he had to play a different role. So that’s all he had to adapt to, and he tried his best to adapt to that role and tried to execute as much as possible,” Bahutule said during the pre-match press conference. Kuldeep bowled with a flatter trajectory in Galle instead of his usual style of giving the ball more air. Bahutule explained that the change was made based on the pitch conditions and what was needed at different stages of the match. “We had to see how the trajectory or the speeds work in every session. Rahul Dravid, cricket great and a Test veteran, wants players like 15-year-old Vaibhav Sooryavanshi to lead the charge in Test cricket’s revival. Already impressed with the batting prodigy Sooryavanshi, who recently became the youngest Indian men’s debutant during the concluded UK tour, Dravid is concerned about his growth, development and management without hampering his red-ball ambitions. Having worked with the attacking left-hander at Rajasthan Royals, Dravid knows the depth of talent but urges him to maintain balance between white and red-ball cricket. "I think you always have to find that balance," Dravid said in a chat with Cricinfo at an event in Dublin to unveil the ETPL, where he co-owns the franchise Dublin Guardians. "And I think it's a great thing that Vaibhav is getting the experience of playing some white-ball cricket through the IPL in India, but he's also having the time to go back and play red-ball cricket in the Indian domestic system and grow his red-ball career. "All of us also want to see Test cricket survive, all of us want to see Test cricket grow, and we need players like him to be able to hopefully play all formats of the game,” Dravid noted. Also read| Starc breaks Anderson’s record for most first-ball Test wickets: See top 5 list Sooryavanshi has played and dominated in his brief white-ball domestic and India career, including at the age-group cricket, but hasn’t been tested enough against the red ball. With him set to embrace his journey as the vice-captain of the East Zone in the Duleep Trophy, Vaibhav will have plenty of red-ball cricket waiting for him. Dravid too wants him to explore that aspect of the game. "The good thing is he's going to take some time; he's going to need some experience, he's going to get an opportunity to play a lot of red-ball cricket," Dravid said. "He's not played as much red-ball cricket as probably white-ball cricket. "He's only 15, and I think you've got to just give him some time and you've got to be patient with him. He's obviously been such a success straightaway, right, but he's going to go through his ups and downs, and I think people are going to have to be patient with him,” Dravid added.
Dravid cautions Sooryavanshi
Sooryavanshi has played just eight first-class matches, averaging a mere 17.25. With at least two East Zone games and a potential unofficial Tests against Australia A in September, Vaibhav has a chance to improve his numbers. "I think he's going to have some success, but he also might have periods where it probably doesn't work out well for him," Dravid cautioned. "But let's all remember he's only 15 and he has a long way to go. So, Vaibhav Sooryavanshi, by not playing in T20 competitions all over the world, is actually playing in the red-ball Indian domestic competition. Rahul Dravid backs 15-year-old prodigy Vaibhav Sooryavanshi to help revive Test cricket, urging patience as the young star focuses on red-ball domestic cricket.

Arsenal boss Mikel Arteta felt his team’s 3-0 win over Coventry in the opening game of the Premier League season on Friday (Aug 21) proved that the Gunners have not lost their hunger for silverware. Picking up from where they left off last season, when Arsenal ended their 22-year wait for a league title, they cruised to a comfortable win, thanks to goals from Kai Havertz, Bukayo Saka and Martin Odegaard at the Emirates Stadium. Starc returned with the same aggression and tweaked planning in his second over and picked up wickets of Tanzid Hasan (0) and Bangladesh captain Najmul Hossain Shanto (0) in successive deliveries. Two wickets in two balls meant only one thing: a hat-trick, which he missed, and so the ball went over Mushfiqur Rahim’s stumps straight to the keeper. Bangladesh’s scorecard read 9 for 3 in 2.2 overs. Things turned from bad to worse for them after Starc, in his third and fourth over, respectively, and less than 42 minutes into the opening day in Mackay, picked two more wickets and completed his five-wicket haul. He first accounted for Mominul Haque, caught by Cameron Green on nine, before getting his fifth of the day by removing Litton Das plumb in front for a duck. Precise line and zeal through the wicket crushed Bangladesh’s momentum as Australia sit in the driver’s seat. “Still a little bit of shape there,” Starc said of Mackay’s wicket on day one. “It’s probably not as much sideways as the first session over at Darwin. I think if it’s a lot like the Gabba, it’s going to get a little bit quicker, harden up a little bit more. It’s still quite greasy underfoot to start with. So obviously it’s beautiful weather; it might harden up a little bit, get a bit quicker and then hopefully once we get four more wickets, there’s plenty of runs in it,” he added.
