Hundreds of violent protesters stormed and ransacked the official residence of Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina as the leader fled to India in the hope of asylum on Monday (August 5).

The protesters, in defiance to the military curfew imposed in the capital, walked into Gono Bhaban Palace and vandalised furniture, glassdoorpanels, books and other items and expressed their anger against civil service job quotas recently announced by the government.

Bangladesh saw visuals similar to what happened in their neighbouring country, Sri Lanka after itsleader, Gotabaya Rajapaksa, fled from the country and the protesters swarmed inside the presidential palace to loot any valuable item lying in the country's most powerful house.

In the videos shared on social media, people were seen taking away chicken, fish, goat, vegetables and furniture while also enjoying on Hasina's bed and in the pool. Some of them were also seen savouring the food left in the kitchen. Some even took her saree.

The protesters also rampaged through symbols of Hasina's rule, including the busts of her father, the creator of Bangladesh, the Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman.

How did Bangladesh face such political turmoil?

The protesters stormed inside the official residence of Hasina weeks after violent demonstrations and clashes with security forces.

The protests had started peacefully in June, but they soon became violent as clashes broke out between protesters, police, and pro-government activists at Dhaka University.

The students were protesting against public sector job quotas in which 30 per centreservation was given to the family members of fighters from the 1971 War of Independence from Pakistan.

On Monday (August 5), thousands of protesters marched towards the capital city and demanded that Hasina step down. The march was carried out after more than 100 people were killed in clashes between pro-government supporters and groups on Sunday (August 4).

As Hasina fled the country, jubilant crowds took to the streets of Bangladesh and celebrated her fall from power.
