In a massive development, New Delhi intercepted a Pakistan-bound vessel at Gujarat's Kandla Port on February 3. The Indian authorities successfully tracked the suspicious cargo that later could be used in an irresponsible manner. So why the Karachi-bound vessel raises concerns of Pakistan's growing nuclear assertiveness? Here are some concerning evidence that triggers international scrutiny.

Industrial dryer?

The vessel that is being docked at the port for more than two weeks has been probed by a team of scientists from India's Defence and Research Development (DRDO). And the initial findings suggest alarming revelations. The crewmembers earlier declared the vessel as an industrial dryer.

However, it is an autoclave. So what exactly is an autoclave? It's a machine used to launch ballistic missiles and for scientific and military purposes. The DRDO team says that the autoclave in question here is used to make the composite lining for solid-fuel ballistic missiles. In simpler language, it is a material strong enough to survive the impact of a missile's booster.

Why the route of the vessel raises suspicions?

Several reports have claimed that the name of the vessel is Da Cui Yun and bears a Hong Kong flag. And it started its journey from the Port of Jiangyin in eastern China. We checked the most popular route between this port and the port of Kandla where it was detained. And it was found that the route was "out of range".

Why docking at Karachi raises eyebrows?

The vessel was seized at Port of Kandla, which is just 350 km away from Karachi, its main destination. Karachi is the home to SUPARCO, Pakistan ballistic missile programme's agency.

Pakistan and China nexus

Pakistan and China's nuclear bonhomie dates back to 1989 when Islamabad signed a deal with Beijing to purchase 34 solid-fuel M-11 ballistic missiles, which form the core of Pak's ballistic missile capability.

Today, a second high-level team from DRDO went to Kandla to examine the cargo. The Indian authorities have still not come out with the details. But there are some crucial questions not just from India but from world that seeks answers from Pakistan.

Despite that scant regard has been paid to the verdict of Delhi High Court and the order of Supreme Court as well."

The verdict comes after women officers sought the rejection of Centre's view in the case. The government in its reply to the top court had pointed towards "physical prowess" and "physiological limitations" as limiting factors to induct women in higher posts.

The Indian telecom industry is under duress after the Supreme Court came down heavily on telecom companies for not paying dues on time to the government.

The judges accused the telcos of "contempt of court". Even the telecom department officials were rebuked.

Now, three telecom companies must pay a very heavy bill together worth Rupees one lakh crore.

Here's all you need to know about the consequences of the ruling:

The telecom industry is reeling under the slam of the Supreme Court's gavel. Two top telecom companies must pay up a total of 85,000 crore rupees in dues to the government. The order will have severe economic consequences.

Vodafone Idea could shut down, causing over 13,000 people to lose their jobs. The number could be higher if we include all those who run "recharge shops" across the country. Plus, the mobile bill of customers may shoot up.

Consumers may have to pay substantially more for their mobile data packs and voice calls because of the stress.

The top court had set a January 23 as the deadline. It has pulled up the government for not enforcing the deadline.

Another telecom giant, Bharti Airtel, owes Rupees 35,000 crore, while Vodafone Idea owes over 50,000 crores.

The companies must pay the sum by March 17.

The telecom giants have paid some of the money and have sought more time for the rest.

But why do these companies have to pay such massive dues?

The legal conflict is around 14 years old. The dispute is over the definition of revenue. The worst-hit is Vodafone Idea which is saddled with mounting losses and debt and owes the biggest chunk to the government. The company says it will collapse if the government does not give any relief.

The collapse of Vodafone Idea would make it the third bankruptcy of a local mobile carrier in two years after that of Aircel and Rcom.

It all started with the arrival of Mukesh Ambani's Reliance Jio, which slashed the existing mobile data prices to an extent that India today offers the world's cheapest mobile data packs.

Once Jio did it, others had to follow thus dipping their hands to the bottom of their coffers to stay competitive.

Meanwhile, data-hungry Indian consumers became more demanding, pushing the companies into a data war.

The Supreme Court ruling will change all this.

In order to pay the dues, telecom operators could raise the tariffs by 25 to 30 per cent by the end of the year.

So, young India will now begin to feel the pinch, as they begin to shell out more for less data.

Speaking at the Tamil Nadu Assembly, Chief Minister Edappadi K Palaniswami defended the police action against the anti-CAA protestors who are gathered at the Washermanpet locality in the northern part of Chennai. The protesters are at the locality since Friday to replicate Delhi’s Shaheen Bagh protests. The chief minister said that some miscreants had instigated the untoward incidents.

Palaniswami stated that “the protestors did not have the required permission. When they were asked to get arrested, some people started pelting stones, slippers and bottles and that is when the police had to resort to using of force. This is an instigated protest.”

He urged the Muslim community to reject the false propaganda, designs of the miscreants and cooperate with the government to maintain social harmony. “The government of Amma (Jayalalithaa) will not allow anything against the minorities and it will protect the minorities,” Palaniswami said.

He also said that the permission for the protest was sought on behalf of 13 mosques only on February 13 and all of a sudden, over 300 Muslims - including 200 women - assembled near the Washermanpet roundabout and raised slogans against the CAA.

“The police held talks with them and cautioned against the protests since it had disrupted the traffic flow. But they rejected the advice, raised slogans and obstructed the police from detaining 40 persons. When the police kept the arrested persons in a bus, they smashed the windows of the vehicle,” he said.

He added that barricades were placed to prevent protesters from causing damage to public property, but the protesters instigated the locals to push the barricades and the police. He added that 82 protesters were arrested and they broke the windows of the bus.

CM Palaniswami said the death of an elderly man Fazurulla due to natural causes was distorted and presented as death caused by police action which led to protests in Chennai and other areas.

In response to the CM's reply, MK Stalin-led DMK staged a walkout from the state Assembly as they were not pleased with Palaniswami's defence of the police action. Stalin said, "The government's version is totally false. The police are the ones who attacked the peaceful protesters."

Earlier, Stalin had urged for a probe into the issue. The DMK president had termed the action that was taken against the protesters by the Tamil Nadu government as ‘incorrect’ and called on the police to release the protestors.

Stalin had condemned the AIADMK government's police crackdown on the night of February 14. He claimed that it was a deliberate attack on the people who demonstrated peacefully against the Citizenship Amendment Act (CAA). He urged the authorities to release the detainees and ensure that the cases against them are withdrawn.

A buffalo jockey from Karnataka, Srinivas Gowda who recently went viral on social media for his Kambala victory has officially rejected the government offer for him to participate in national trials.

Kambala is a local sport where participants sprint through paddy fields with buffaloes.

Gowda, 28, reportedly finished the race in 13.42 seconds.

His performance drew comparisons with Usain Bolt, who currently holds the world 100 metre record of 9.58 seconds.

After garnering the attention of netizens, Gowda received official affirmation from the Sports Minister of India, Kiren Rijiju.

However, Gowda recently told BBC Hindi that he does not intend to participate in the national sprint trials.

"I have injured my leg and my focus is on Kambala. I am used to running with buffalo in the paddy fields," he told the BBC.

Kambala is a revered race in Karnataka, and was conducted earlier in February. However, the videos went viral only recently, triggering nationwide and global attention for the racer.

On Saturday, Rijiju tweeted and said that the authorities had arranged train tickets for the racer, so that he could participate in the trials at one of the centres of the Sports Authority of India (SAI).

The Kambala Academy oversees the event. In conversation with BBC, the founder-secretary of the academy, Gunapala Kambada said that Gowda would not attend the trials this time.

"The problem is that he has Kambala [races] on the next three Saturdays," Kambada said.

But Kambada suggested that he may go for trials later if the circumstances allow.

While referring to the comparisons that were drawn between Gowda and Bolt, Kambada cautioned against it and claimed that the Olympic teams have improved scientific methods to measure speed.

Many experts and responders on social media dubbed the comparison ''inaccurate'', for Gowda's speed was perhaps accelerated by the buffaloes that were draggin him.

The Supreme Court said on Monday that people have a fundamental right to protest against law but the blocking of public roads is a matter of concern and there has to be a balancing factor.

Hearing pleas over the roadblocks due to the ongoing protests at Shaheen Bagh against the Citizenship Amendment Act (CAA), a bench comprising Justices S K Kaul and K M Joseph said its concern is about what will happen if people start protesting on roads.

Democracy works on expressing views but there are lines and boundaries for it, the bench said.

It asked senior advocate Sanjay Hegde and advocate Sadhana Ramachandran to talk to Shaheen Bagh protestors and persuade them to move to an alternative site where no public place is blocked.

The matter has been posted for next hearing on February 24.

People have a fundamental right to protest but the thing which is troubling us is the blocking of public roads, the bench said.

Solicitor General Tushar Mehta said Shaheen Bagh protestors should not be given a message that every institution is on its knees trying to persuade them on this issue.

The apex court said that if nothing works, we will leave it to the authorities to deal with the situation.

Protestors have made their point and the protests have gone on for quite some time, it said.

Restrictions have been imposed on the Kalindi Kunj-Shaheen Bagh stretch and the Okhla underpass, which were closed on December 15 last year due to the protests against CAA and Register of Citizens.

The top court had earlier said the anti-CAA protesters at Delhi's Shaheen Bagh cannot block public roads and create inconvenience for others.

The apex court was hearing an appeal filed by advocate Amit Sahni, who had approached the Delhi high court seeking directions to the Delhi Police to ensure smooth traffic flow on the Kalindi Kunj-Shaheen Bagh stretch, which was blocked by anti-CAA protesters on December 15.

While dealing with Sahni's plea, the high court had asked local authorities to deal with the situation keeping in mind law and order.

Separately, former BJP MLA Nand Kishore Garg has filed a petition in the apex court seeking directions to the authorities to remove the protestors from Shaheen Bagh.

One of the pleas has sought to lay down of comprehensive and exhaustive guidelines relating to outright restrictions for holding protests or agitations leading to obstruction of the public place.

In his plea, Garg has said that law enforcement machinery was being "held hostage to the whims and fancies of the protesters" who have blocked vehicular and pedestrian movement from the road connecting Delhi to Noida.

The state has the duty to protect the fundamental rights of the citizen who were continuously being harassed by the blockage of the arterial road, it said.

"It is disappointing that the state machinery is muted and a silent spectator to hooliganism and vandalism of the protesters who are threatening the existential efficacy of the democracy and the rule of law and had already taken the law and order situation in their own hand," the plea had said.

In his appeal, Sahni had sought supervision of the situation in Shaheen Bagh, where several women are sitting on protest, by a retired Supreme Court judge or a sitting judge of the Delhi High Court.

Sahni has said in his plea that protests in Shaheen Bagh have inspired similar demonstrations in other cities and to allow it to continue would set a wrong precedent.

We particularly reject the repeated attempts by Turkey to justify the cross border terrorism practised so blatantly by Pakistan."

The Turkish president had said that Turkey would continue to stand by "justice, peace and dialogue in the resolution of the Kashmir issue" while saying that Pakistan has been affected by terrorism while lauding its effort in Afghanistan.
