US President Donald Trump will be shielded from the sight of slums by a newly built wall when he visits the city of Ahmedabad during a visit to India this month.

A senior government said the wall was being built for security reasons, not to conceal the slum district.

But the contractor building it told Reuters the government "did not want the slum to be seen" when Trump passes by on the ride in from Ahmedabad's airport.

"I've been ordered to build a wall as soon as possible, over 150 masons are working round-the-clock to finish the project," the contractor said, speaking on condition of anonymity.

The government official conceded that the wall was part of a "beautification and cleanliness" drive.

Whatever the reason, the 400-meter-long and a seven-feet-high wall will prevent the US leader from getting a glimpse of a slum district that houses an estimated 800 families.

Trump, who has made his pledge to build a wall along the United States' border with Mexico a feature of his presidency, will visit India on Feb. 24-25 to reaffirm strategic ties that have been buffeted by trade disputes.

He is expected to attend an event dubbed "Kem Chho Trump" ("How are you, Trump") at a stadium in Ahmedabad along the lines of the "Howdy Modi" extravaganza he hosted for Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi in Houston last September.

Speaking at the White House on Tuesday, Trump quoted Modi as saying "millions and millions of people" would attend the rally.

The event provides Trump, who was impeached in December, with the opportunity to woo the support of hundreds of thousands of Indian-American voters ahead of the U.S. presidential election in November.

But some slum dwellers whose homes will be cordoned off by the wall in Ahmedabad - the largest city in Modi's home state of Gujarat - said the government was wasting tax-payer money to hide the poor.

"Poverty and slums are the reality of our life, but Modi's government wants to hide the poor," said Parvatbhai Mafabhai, a day worker who has lived there with his family for more than three decades.

The novel coronavirus scare has reduced the consumption of chicken in Maharashtra, with the poultry sector in the state recording over Rs 100 crore loss in the last fortnight, officials said on Thursday.

The state Animal Husbandry Department attributed the loss to the rumours doing rounds on social media that coronavirus can spread through the chicken.

"The poultry sector in Maharashtra has recorded a loss of over Rs 100 crore in the last 15 days due to the rumours and false news spread on social media," an official of the department told reporters here.

"The daily average sale of chicken earlier was around 3,500 metric tonnes. However, after the outbreak of coronavirus, the sale came down to 2,000 metric tonnes," he said.

"After the animal husbandry and other departments started spreading awareness, the daily sale of chicken has now gone up to 2,500 metric tonnes," he said.

S P Singh, Commissioner of Animal Husbandry, said the department has registered a complaint with the cyber cell of Pune police against some videos shared on the internet, which is spreading rumours linking coronavirus to chicken, and sought action against the rumour mongers.

"After the outbreak of coronavirus is China, some unscientific claims and rumours are being spread on the social media linking coronavirus to chicken," he said.

"However, the fact is that novel coronavirus is transmitted from one person to another and there is no scientific base to the claim that coronavirus in chicken is transmitted to humans," Singh added.&nbsp;

British lawmaker Debbie Abrahams, who was denied entry to India and deported to Dubai, has run a sustained campaign against India, the Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) said on Thursday.

Abrahams, who is an Opposition Labour Party MP and Chair of the All Party Parliamentary Group (APPG) on Kashmir, claimed she was travelling on a valid e-visa to India to visit family and friends but her visa was revoked without explanation.

MEA Spokesperson Raveesh Kumar said Abrahams did not have a valid visa when she arrived at the IGI Airport here on Monday.

"When she was coming to India, she did not have a valid visa. She came here without a valid visa and with all respect, she was sent back. We believe that her views and statements are anti-India," Kumar said at a briefing when asked about her statements in favour of Pakistan.

There has been a sustained campaign from her side against India, he said.

Kumar said Abrahams claimed that she was here to meet family and friends, but even if her visa had been valid it was an e-Business visa.

"Even if we presume that she had a visa, that was issued for a business ETA and business ETA cannot be used for a primary purpose of meeting family and friends," he said.

Abrahams, who has been a vocal critic of the Indian government's abrogation of Article 370 in Jammu and Kashmir, posted what looks like an e-visa document on Twitter to show that she had a visa issued on October 7 last year, which was valid until October 5, 2020.

However, government sources had said Abrahams' e-Business visa was revoked as she was involved in anti-India activities, and the cancellation was conveyed to her on February 14.&nbsp;

However, government sources had said Abrahams' e-Business visa was revoked as she was involved in anti-India activities, and the cancellation was conveyed to her on February 14.

Army Chief General MM Naravane on Thursday said that his force is not allowing any disruptive actions by Pakistani Army's BAT as the Army foils the attempts even before the adversary is able to launch them.

"We have been getting inputs. We have been able to foil (Pakistan Army's) BAT action attempts even before they have been able to launch them," he said while speaking to ANI.

The BAT (Border Action Team) of the Pakistan Army include both regular Army personnel and mercenaries from groups such as Jaish-e-Mohammed (JeM) and Lashkar-e-Taiba (LeT) and are tasked to carry out surprise hits on Indian positions along the LoC.

General Naravane underlined that there are 15-20 terrorist camps inside Pakistan-occupied-Kashmir where there are around 250-350 terrorists at any given time. The numbers may vary at different times.

Speaking about the newly proposed 'Thal Sena Bhawan' in Delhi Cantonment, the Army Chief said it will improve efficiency.

"The proposed Thal Sena Bhawan will bring all Army Headquarters offices under one roof thereby improving working efficiency while reducing carbon footprint and logistics requirements. It will also allow more family time for all soldiers tenating peace posting in Delhi," he said.

Union Home Minister Amit Shah will hold a bilateral meeting with his Maldivian counterpart Sheikh Imran Abdulla on Friday and will discuss security cooperation between the two countries, officials said on Thursday.

This is for the first time Shah will meet Abdulla, who is on a four-day visit to India beginning on Thursday.

The India-Maldives bilateral meeting will be held on February 21 in which the Indian delegation will be led by Shah and the Maldivian team by Abdulla, a government official said.

Both the ministers will discuss issues related to bilateral security cooperation, the official said.

India and Maldives share ethnic, linguistic, cultural, religious and commercial links steeped in antiquity. Except for a brief period between February 2012 and November 2018, relations between the two countries have been close, cordial and multi-dimensional.

India was among the first to recognise the Maldives after its independence in 1965 and to establish diplomatic relations with the country.

Proximity of Maldives to the west coast of India (it is barely 70 nautical miles away from Minicoy and 300 nautical miles away from India's West coast), and its situation at the hub of commercial sea-lanes running through the Indian Ocean and its potential to allow a third nation's naval presence in the area imbues it with significant strategic importance to India.&nbsp;

Focus on reviewing bilateral ties, strengthening global partnership: MEA on Trump's visit

As Donald <a href="https://www.wionews.com/india-news/us-president-donald-trump-retweets-wions-coverage-of-his-upcoming-trip-to-india-281666">Trump</a> heads to India for his first presidential visit, the government described his upcoming visit as "brief but intense", promising to make the "Namaste Trump" event grander than the "Howdy Modi" event in Houston last year. This, notwithstanding the fact that the much-hyped initial trade deal poised to be signed during this visit has now become a non-starter.

Sources say both sides have dug their heels on a possible trade pact after the US wanted more concessions from India than promised earlier.

Adding to the scepticism around the deal, the US trade representative Robert Lighthizer skipped his visit to India last week to meet the commerce minister Piyush Goel.

Brushing aside questions on why the two sides won't be able to sign a trade pact during the visit, the MEA spokesperson Raveesh Kumar today said, "We have been engaging with the United States on trade talks for some time. We hope to reach an understanding with an outcome that strikes the right balance for both sides. We do not want to rush into a deal as the issues involved are complicated with many decisions potentially having a real impact on people’s lives and long-term economic consequences. We do not want to create artificial deadlines."

On possible deliverables, the MEA added, "the visit has to be seen in the context of reaching a certain stage of maturity in the relationship, regular meetings between the leaders of two democracies and the growing comfort level between our two countries. Both leaders have personally invested in this relationship."

India says it's ready to open up its dairy and farm industry to the US (despite domestic opposition) and give further import duty concessions on Harley Davidson motorcycles in return for the reinstatement of Generalised System of Preferences(GSP) for India, easing of visa rules, exemption from high duties imposed by the US on certain steel and aluminium products, and greater market access for its products from sectors such as agriculture, automobile, automobile components and engineering.

However, it looks like India will have to wait longer for anything to materialise, as <a href="https://www.wionews.com/india-news/not-in-a-hurry-for-a-trade-deal-says-india-ahead-of-trumps-visit-281638">Trump</a> announced this week that even though he "liked Prime Minister Modi," &nbsp;India had treated the US "unfairly" while announcing that the trade deal will have to wait until his November re-election.

But, both sides are looking to leverage the meet despite the trade issues.

India is planning to roll out the red carpet for the Trumps giving Agra a makeover with fresh paint and releasing fresh water into the Yamuna and promising lakhs of people in attendance of the President and the first lady.

In a statement, foreign secretary Harsh Vardhan Shringla said US President Donald Trump's visit would be "brief but intense with all the essential elements of a state visit with two additional legs of Ahmedabad and Agra all squeezed into 36 hours."

The President will first head to Ahmedabad, the prime minister's home constituency to jointly inaugurate the world's largest cricket stadium, the newly built Motera Cricket Stadium with a capacity of 1,10,000 visitors.

Sources say the route from the airport to the stadium will be flanked by 28 stages representing various parts of the country and its rich diversity, not to forget the Indian government has promised an audience of hundreds of thousands of cheering Indians on the way to the stadium and over a lakh inside the arena.

Inside the new stadium, President Trump and Prime Minister Modi will address a full-capacity audience, much like the "Howdy Modi" event. The route will also feature decorations depicting different events in the life of Mahatma Gandhi.

Next, President Trump and First Lady Melania will head to Agra, where the two will spend about an hour at the Taj Mahal until sunset before they depart for Delhi.

On Tuesday, the US president has all his official engagements. In the morning, President Trump and the First Lady will be accorded a ceremonial welcome at the Rashtrapati Bhawan. He will then pay his tributes at Rajghat at the samadhi of Mahatma Gandhi. It would be followed by restricted and delegation-level talks between President Trump and Prime Minister Modi at Hyderabad House.&nbsp;

India says the talks will be comprehensive and cover defence, security, counter-terrorism, as well as trade, energy, people-to-people exchanges and other bilateral matters. Prime Minister Modi would host a lunch for President Trump following the talks. The two leaders would also address the media. &nbsp;
&nbsp;
In the afternoon, President Trump is expected to attend private events at the US embassy, including a private roundtable with industry representatives.

And finally, he will be hosted by the President Ram Nath Kovind for dinner on the evening of February 25.

It will be the eighth meeting between the two leaders in eight months. The US is India's largest trading partner in goods and services. The overall bilateral trade between the two sides has increased by over 10 per cent per annum over the past two years to reach $142 billion in 2018 and it is expected to cross $150 billion for the first time this year.&nbsp;

Also, in the last two years, the US has become India's sixth-largest source of crude oil imports, with hydrocarbon imports rising to $7 billion in the last two years. Not to forget, the 4 million-strong Indian diaspora that is important to any US president in an election year, the richest among them being the Gujarati diaspora.

Reports say, ahead of the visit, the cabinet committee on security(CCS) has approved a deal to procure a batch of 24 Lockheed Martin MH60 <a href="https://www.wionews.com/india-news/ahead-of-trumps-visit-cabinet-committee-on-security-approves-us-helicopter-deal-281706">Romeo helicopters</a> - this will boost India's naval capacity. India's defence procurement from the US stands at $18 billion.

So even though we won't see a full-fledged trade deal taking shape, as India's foreign secretary Harsh Shringla said this week, the visit will showcase the "consequential relationship" between India and the US.

As Donald Trump heads to India for his first presidential visit, the government described his upcoming visit as "brief but intense", promising to make the "Namaste Trump" event grander than the "Howdy Modi" event in Houston last year.

As Donald Trump heads to India for his first presidential visit, the government described his upcoming visit as "brief but intense", promising to make the "Namaste Trump" event grander than the "Howdy Modi" event in Houston last year. We do not want to create artificial deadlines." On possible deliverables, the MEA added, "the visit has to be seen in the context of reaching a certain stage of maturity in the relationship, regular meetings between the leaders of two democracies and the growing comfort level between our two countries. Both leaders have personally invested in this relationship." India says it's ready to open up its dairy and farm industry to the US (despite domestic opposition) and give further import duty concessions on Harley Davidson motorcycles in return for the reinstatement of Generalised System of Preferences(GSP) for India, easing of visa rules, exemption from high duties imposed by the US on certain steel and aluminium products, and greater market access for its products from sectors such as agriculture, automobile, automobile components and engineering. However, it looks like India will have to wait longer for anything to materialise, as Trump announced this week that even though he "liked Prime Minister Modi," India had treated the US "unfairly" while announcing that the trade deal will have to wait until his November re-election. But, both sides are looking to leverage the meet despite the trade issues. India is planning to roll out the red carpet for the Trumps giving Agra a makeover with fresh paint and releasing fresh water into the Yamuna and promising lakhs of people in attendance of the President and the first lady. In a statement, foreign secretary Harsh Vardhan Shringla said US President Donald Trump's visit would be "brief but intense with all the essential elements of a state visit with two additional legs of Ahmedabad and Agra all squeezed into 36 hours." The President will first head to Ahmedabad, the prime minister's home constituency to jointly inaugurate the world's largest cricket stadium, the newly built Motera Cricket Stadium with a capacity of 1,10,000 visitors. On Tuesday, the US president has all his official engagements. In the morning, President Trump and the First Lady will be accorded a ceremonial welcome at the Rashtrapati Bhawan. He will then pay his tributes at Rajghat at the samadhi of Mahatma Gandhi. It would be followed by restricted and delegation-level talks between President Trump and Prime Minister Modi at Hyderabad House. India says the talks will be comprehensive and cover defence, security, counter-terrorism, as well as trade, energy, people-to-people exchanges and other bilateral matters. Prime Minister Modi would host a lunch for President Trump following the talks. The two leaders would also address the media. In the afternoon, President Trump is expected to attend private events at the US embassy, including a private roundtable with industry representatives. And finally, he will be hosted by the President Ram Nath Kovind for dinner on the evening of February 25. It will be the eighth meeting between the two leaders in eight months. The US is India's largest trading partner in goods and services. The overall bilateral trade between the two sides has increased by over 10 per cent per annum over the past two years to reach $142 billion in 2018 and it is expected to cross $150 billion for the first time this year. India ranked 77th on a sustainability index that takes into account per capita carbon emissions and ability of children in a nation to live healthy lives and was placed 131st on a ranking that measures the best chance at survival and well-being for children, according to a UN-backed report.

The report was released on Wednesday by a commission of over 40 child and adolescent health experts from around the world.

It was commissioned by the <a href="https://www.wionews.com/world/world-health-organisation-warns-overseas-virus-spread-may-be-tip-of-the-iceberg-279719">World Health Organization</a> (WHO), UN Children's Fund (<a href="https://www.wionews.com/world/unicef-deputy-director-justin-forsyth-steps-down-33748">UNICEF</a>) and the <a href="https://www.wionews.com/world/walk-to-work-clean-your-house-live-longer-lancet-20535/amp">Lancet medical journal</a>.

In the report assessing the capacity of 180 countries to ensure that their youngsters can survive and thrive, India ranks 77th on the Sustainability Index and 131 on the Flourishing Index, it said.

Flourishing is the geometric mean of Surviving and Thriving.

For Surviving, the authors selected maternal survival, survival in children younger than 5 years old, suicide, access to maternal and child health services, basic hygiene and sanitation, and lack of extreme poverty.

For Thriving, the domains were educational achievement, growth and nutrition, reproductive freedom, and protection from violence.

Under the Sustainability Index, the authors noted that promoting today's national conditions for children to survive and thrive must not come at the cost of eroding future global conditions for children's ability to flourish.

The Sustainability Index ranks countries on excess carbon emissions compared with the 2030 target. This provides a convenient and available proxy for a country's contribution to sustainability in future.

The report noted that under realistic assumptions about possible trajectories towards sustainable greenhouse gas emissions, models predict that global carbon emissions need to be reduced from 397 gigatonnes&nbsp;to 228 gigatonnes per year by 2030 to maintain even a 66 per cent chance of keeping global warming below 15C.

It said that the world's survival depended on children being able to flourish, but no country is doing enough to give them a sustainable future.

"No country in the world is currently providing the conditions we need to support every child to grow up and have a healthy future," said Anthony Costello, Professor of Global Health and Sustainability at University College London, one of the lead authors of the report.

"Especially, they're under immediate threat from climate change and from commercial marketing, which has grown hugely in the last decade," said Costello&nbsp;former <a href="https://www.wionews.com/world/world-health-organisation-warns-overseas-virus-spread-may-be-tip-of-the-iceberg-279719">WHO</a> Director of Mother, Child and Adolescent health.

Norway leads the table for survival, health, education and nutrition rates followed by South Korea and the Netherlands. Central African Republic, Chad and Somalia come at the bottom.

However, when taking into account per capita CO2 emissions, these top countries trail behind, with Norway 156th, the Republic of Korea 166th and the Netherlands 160th.

Each of the three emits 210 per cent more CO2 per capita than their 2030 target, the data shows, while the US, Australia, and Saudi Arabia are among the 10 worst emitters. The lowest emitters are Burundi, Chad and Somalia.

According to the report, the only countries on track to beat CO2 emission per capita targets by 2030, while also performing fairly ? within the top 70 ? on child flourishing measures are: Albania, Armenia, Grenada, Jordan, Moldova, Sri Lanka, Tunisia, Uruguay and Vietnam.

"More than 2 billion people live in countries where development is hampered by humanitarian crises, conflicts, and natural disasters, problems increasingly linked with climate change," said Minister Awa Coll-Seck from Senegal, Co-Chair of the commission.

The report also highlights the distinct threat posed to children from harmful marketing.

Evidence suggests that children in some countries see as many as 30,000 advertisements on television alone in a single year, while youth exposure to vaping (e-cigarettes) advertisements increased by more than 250 per cent in the US over two years, reaching more than 24 million young people.

Studies in Australia, Canada, Mexico, New Zealand and the US&nbsp;among many others&nbsp;have shown that self-regulation has not hampered commercial ability to advertise to children.

Children's exposure to commercial marketing of junk food and sugary beverages is associated with purchase of unhealthy foods and overweight and obesity, linking predatory marketing to the alarming rise in childhood obesity, it said.

The number of obese children and adolescents increased from 11 million in 1975 to 124 million in 2016 ? an 11-fold increase, with dire individual and societal costs, the report said.

To protect children, the authors call for a new global movement driven by and for children.

Specific recommendations include stopping CO2 emissions with the utmost urgency, to ensure children have a future on this planet; placing children and adolescents at the centre of global efforts to achieve sustainable development, the report said.

New policies and investment in all sectors to work towards child health and rights; incorporating children's voices into policy decisions and tightening national regulation of harmful commercial marketing, supported by a new Optional Protocol to the UN Convention on the Rights of the Child, it said.

Three days after being denied entry into India, British parliamentarian Debbie Abrahams landed in Pakistan on Wednesday.&nbsp;

A self-proclaimed champion of social justice, Abrahams says she will be visiting Pakistan Occupied Kashmir to assess the human rights situation there.

On her arrival, miss Abrahams was accorded a warm welcome by the Director-General of Pak-based Jammu and Kashmir liberation cell - Fida Husain Kiani.

The website of the cell enumerates 6 detailed objectives with most of them revolving around the accession of Jammu and Kashmir to Pakistan.

Abrahams was then provided with a platform to voice her grudges against India - a press briefing with Pakistan's foreign minister Shah Mahmood Qureshi.

As per the 2011 census, minority ethnic groups make up 22.5 per cent of the population here and what is interesting is the fact that 10 per cent of them are of Pak-origin, 7.3 per cent are Bangladeshi immigrants while the Indian population here has remained static.

The population of Pak-origin people shot up from 6.3 per cent in 2001 to 10 per cent in 2011 and by all indications these figures have increased considerably in the last 9 years.

The former Mumbai police commissioner Rakesh Maria claimed that Lashkar-e-Taiba (LeT)&nbsp;and Pakistan's ISI wanted to project the 26/11 Mumbai terror attack Hindu terror.

Decorated cop and former police commissioner of Mumbai Rakesh Maria has made the sensational claim in his new tell-all book.

In his memoir, 'Let me say it now', Maria revealed how the LeT&nbsp;wanted 26/11 terrorist Ajmal Kasab to die a Hindu suspect 'Samir Chaudhari'

Ajmal Kasab was part of the group which infiltrated India in 2008 and killed hundreds in Mumbai.

That fateful day was eventually christened 26/11.

He said that he was able to nail the conspiracy early on in the investigation. The LeT&nbsp;wanted the terrorist attack to feed into the imagery of Hindu terrorism which was in vogue during the second tenure of the congress-led United Progressive Alliance (UPA).

He claims that Pakistan’s ISI wanted to kill Kasab inside prison and had even tasked Dawood Ibrahim for the job.

Maria also revealed that terror masterminds had also planted fake identities and addresses with terrorists who had come to India.

India got lucky because of constable Tukaram Omble who was able to capture Ajmal Kasab. Omble himself was martyred during the attempt.

In the case of Kasab too, a false address was planted. Maria said that if they would not have unearthed the conspiracy, the world would have believed that a Hindu from Bengaluru was complicit in the crime.

26/11 was one of the biggest terrorist attacks on Indian soil. India, unlike breakout response, did not exercise military response. Instead India went for the diplomatic option.&nbsp;
