Indian Home Minister Amit Shah on Wednesday broke his silence on the Delhi riots and said that culprits will not be spared no matter which religion, caste or political party they belong to.

Indian Home Minister Amit Shah on Wednesday broke his silence on the Delhi riots and said that culprits will not be spared no matter which religion, caste or political party they belong to. ''Prima facie, I believe that the riots were pre-planned. I assured families of the riot victims that the culprits will not be spared no matter which religion, caste or political party they belong to,'' he said while speaking in parliament during a discussion on Delhi riots. At least 53 people lost their lives during the recent Delhi riots. Shah said that the government did not take the riots casually and assured the House that the Delhi Police will hold a thorough investigation into this incident. ''Around 60 social media accounts were created on February 22 and were closed down on February 26. Police will find those behind them. Social media was used to incite hate,'' he added. The spread of riots on such a big scale in such a short time is not possible without a conspiracy, he said and added that the police were probing. Three people have been arrested for financing the violence in North East Delhi, he said. Shah said no action would be taken against any innocent person. 49 cases of Arms Act have been registered and 153 arms have been recovered, he said.

Political crisis in Madhya Pradesh: 'Looking for a fresh start', says Jyotiraditya Scindia as he quits Congress

India's exports of sugar to Malaysia so far in 2020 have nearly tripled over the figure for all of last year, as Kuala Lumpur steps up purchases to placate New Delhi in a trade dispute that halted its palm oil exports to India, trade officials said.

The record buying could also help India, the world's biggest producer of sugar, to cut stockpiles that are squeezing domestic prices.

India had been the biggest buyer of Malaysian palm oil for five years, but purchases ground to a halt after the January curbs, a retaliation for then prime minister Mahathir Mohamad's criticism of New Delhi's policy regarding its Muslim minority.

"This year Malaysia was aggressively buying Indian raw sugar, which was a pleasant surprise," Praful Vithalani, president of the All India Sugar Trade Association (AISTA), told Reuters.

The trade body's data shows Malaysia has imported 324,405 tonnes of sugar from India this year. That compares with India's exports last year of around 110,000 tonnes and a 2008 record of 313,406 tonnes, according to trade estimates. Malaysia imported a total of 1.95 million tonnes of raw sugar in 2019, data from the International Sugar Organization on Refinitiv Eikon shows. It typically buys more from Brazil and Thailand than from India.

Kuala Lumpur's sugar purchases from India could easily surpass 400,000 tonnes in 2020, as some shipments are still in the pipeline, said a Mumbai-based dealer of a global trading house.

Kuala Lumpur may have asked refiners to give preference to India in sugar purchases, said another Mumbai-based dealer, adding, "It's an effort to please India."

Both dealers sought anonymity as they were not allowed to speak with media.

In January, MSM Malaysia Holdings Berhad, the southeast Asian nation's top sugar refiner, said it would buy 130,000 tonnes of raw sugar from India, worth 200 million ringgit ($49.20 million), in the first quarter.

Malaysia has set itself a month's deadline to resolve the dispute over palm oil, its new Commodities Minister Mohd Khairuddin Aman Razali said on Wednesday, adding that he wanted to send a delegation to India as soon as possible.

"Malaysia can show that it is buying more goods from India than Indonesia," a Mumbai-based refiner said, adding that higher imports of farm commodities would give Malaysia grounds to argue in negotiations that New Delhi should resume palm oil purchases.

Indonesia is the world's biggest producer of palm oil, followed by Malaysia.

India, hoping to reduce its vast surplus stocks of sugar, has approved an export subsidy of 10,448 Indian rupees ($142) per tonne of the sweetener for the marketing year that will end on Sept. 30.

A recent report has warned that temperatures in India would reach such extreme levels in the near future that they may prove to be lethal for an average human being.

The effects of climate change can be seen everywhere, toxic air, intense heatwave, forest fires, melting ice caps, flash floods and sinking cities.

According to a report by the McKinsey global institute, high temperatures and heat waves may threaten the very survival of human beings.

India could be one of the world's first places where temperatures may rise above the survival threshold for humans.

Climate change and global warming may hit India’s GDP within a decade, the report said.

The report says by 2030, temperatures in India could reach such a level that outdoor workers may be forced to cut short their daylight working hours to beat lethal heat waves.

The resultant loss in productivity could put 2.5 per cent to 4.5 per cent of India's GDP at risk annually and by 2050, several pockets with a population of 16 to 20 crore people would experience 60 per cent annual chance of such heat waves.

Just 4-5 hours of outdoor exposure during this time can prove to be fatal for a healthy human being.

As of 2017, heat-exposed work produces about 50 per cent dip in India's GDP mainly agricultural and mining.

Foreign Secretary meets UAE ambassador, discusses new avenues for strategic partnership

Several Congress leaders slammed Jyotiraditya Scindia on Tuesday for quitting the party, accusing him of betraying the trust of the people and placing "personal ambition" over ideology.

Hitting out at Scindia, many Congress leaders referred to the 1857 revolt against the East India Company and the role of the Scindia royals back then as well as Vijaya Raje Scindia's switch from the Congress in 1967.

Congress' prominent youth leader Jyotiraditya Scindia quit the party on Tuesday and appeared set to join the BJP amid a rebellion in Madhya Pradesh by his supporters, pushing the 15-month-old Kamal Nath government to the brink of collapse.

A shell-shocked Congress, in a largely symbolic move of no consequence, expelled Scindia, the party general secretary and scion of the erstwhile Gwalior royal family, on charges of anti-party activities.

Reacting to the development, Rajasthan Chief Minister Ashok Gehlot accused Scindia of betraying the trust of people and ideology, saying people like him cannot thrive without power and the sooner they leave, the better it is.

"Joining hands with the BJP in a time of national crisis speaks volumes about a leader's self-indulgent political ambitions, especially when the BJP is ruining the economy, democratic institutions, social fabric and as well the judiciary," he said on Twitter.

Congress leader in Lok Sabha Adhir Ranjan Chowdhury said ideology did not matter to Scindia, and claimed that "political convenience" and "personal ambition" played a major part in his decision to quit the party.

Chowdhury alleged that some sort of "allurement and enticement" offered by the Bharatiya Janata Party had convinced Scindia to switch over from the Congress.

"It is sad news for the Congress party because Jyotiraditya Scindia had been nurtured by the party over the years," Chowdhury told.

"He had been entrusted with important jobs by the party. But now the situation had come to such a pass that he found it more convenient to switch over to the other party," he said.

Reacting to the development, senior party leader Jairam Ramesh said, "The father had once called the BJP 'Deshdrohis'. Wonder what he would be thinking of his son joining that gang?"

Congress MP Karti Chidambaram tweeted: "I understand ambition. But is ideology irrelevant?"

Some leaders also voiced concerns over the state of the party.

Haryana Congress leader and MLA Kuldeep Bishnoi said Scindia's "departure is a big blow" to the Congress.

"He was a central pillar in the party and the leadership should've done more to convince him to stay. Like him, there are many other devoted INC leaders across the country who feel alienated, wasted and discontented," he said.

"India's oldest party needs to empower young leaders who have the capacity to work hard and resonate with the masses," said Bishnoi, the son of former Haryana chief minister Bhajanlal.

Meanwhile, Madhya Pradesh state minister Jitu Patwari made a reference to the 1857 Revolt against the East India Company as well as Scindia's grandmother, Vijaya Raje Scindia, quitting the Congress in 1967 to state that something similar was happening.

Indian Youth Congress (IYC) chief Srinivas B V slammed Scindia and thanked party chief Sonia Gandhi for expelling the former Guna MP "who was promoting anti-party activities and factionalism".

"The history of 1857 and 1967 was once again repeated," Srinivas B V said.
"No person is, nor will be greater than the party," he added.

Several Congress leaders slammed Jyotiraditya Scindia on Tuesday for quitting the party, accusing him of betraying the trust of the people and placing "personal ambition" over ideology.

Wonder what he would be thinking of his son joining that gang?" Congress MP Karti Chidambaram tweeted: "I understand ambition. But is ideology irrelevant?" Some leaders also voiced concerns over the state of the party. Gaurav Pandhi, national coordinator for social media in the Congress, said, "A traitor is a traitor and no amount of arguments and reasoning can justify treachery. Period!"
