Former Union Minister Jyotiraditya Scindia’s resignation from the Congress Party should not be seen in isolation. It is a result of a massive power struggle within the Congress Party.

Former Congress President Rahul Gandhi is trying to make a comeback and reasserting himself in the organization. It would be foolhardy to think that Scindia left the Congress because he was denied a Rajya Sabha seat.

The controversy over nomination was an immediate factor for his exit but the real issue remains the tussle within the Congress Party for the top job.

Rahul Gandhi expected every senior leader whom he made the minister in UPA-2 to resign and create grounds swell for him after his resignation.

The expected popular upsurge never happened in the party. Those who resigned did so for personal reasons. Jyotiraditya Scindia resigned because he understood that Congress has no future in Uttar Pradesh.

During the 2019 Lok Sabha elections, he was appointed General Secretary Incharge of Uttar Pradesh (west), where Congress party lost all the seats.

In Lok Sabha polls, Scindia also lost the party bastion of Guna in Madhya Pradesh to Bharatiya Janata Party's Krishna Pal Yadav.

Many other leaders like Sachin Pilot and Milind Deora also fell out with Rahul Gandhi.

A lot of second-line leaders felt that the party should organise an election for the president’s position and Congress Working Committee. They did not realise that Rahul Gandhi took it as a personal betrayal. This led to the collapse of communication between Scindia and Gandhi, which left him with no choice but to make his own way out of the party.

Despite public abdication, Rahul’s role has remained all-pervasive within the Congress as Sonia Gandhi is holding the baton for him.

So, Scindia’s exit is the starting point and not the endpoint of crisis within the Congress Party.

The biggest grouse of Jyotiraditya Scindia was that Congress could form government in Madhya Pradesh because the party did very well in Chambal division, but CM position went to Kamalnath who ganged up with former CM Digvijay Singh and former Union Minister Suresh Pachouri to sideline Scindia. The plan succeeded but it created a grouse which got bigger after Scindia lost Lok Sabha elections in 2019.

The battle for Rajya Sabha seat was just a trigger. It was the inability of Gandhis to reconcile two factions that precipitated the crisis. It shows weakening hold of the Gandhis on the Congress and decline of family’s control on the party which Rahul Gandhi is trying to arrest. The exit of Jyotiraditya Scindia will lead to fall of the Congress in Madhya Pradesh and may impact the government in Maharashtra where Congress is a junior partner.

It is this tussle between Gandhis, old Congress families and old and new loyalists that has created the crisis. But let us not be misunderstood that Jyotiraditya Scindia is going to an alien party. One of the founding leaders of BJP in 1980 was Vijay Raje Scindia, grandmother of Jyotiraditya.

His father became MP on Jan Sangh ticket in 1971 and he subsequently shifted to Congress in 1977. His aunt Vasundhara Raje has been BJP Chief Minister of Rajasthan.

Scindia has been a primary member of the Congress party for the last 18 years and his resignation shows the ideological collapse in India's oldest political party.

We probably had forgotten to preserve and protect Ganga, that is like our mother, over the years. But, the Namami Gange mission launched by Prime Minister Narendra Modi in 2014 has brought about a lot of change in the quality of Ganga water, Shah said.
People who visited the 'Kumbh Mela', held in Prayagraj last year, bear testimony to this fact, he said.

Shah said the aim of various Ganga missions is to ensure that people are made aware of the ecological, cultural and historical importance of the river.

We should educate and make aware children in the age group of 15 years about Ganga and its importance and we will see that these children, over the next 60-70 years, will themselves be capable to protect the river, he said.

We need to ensure that strong steps are taken in this direction and we do not have to hang our heads in shame owing to the fact that Ganga is polluted, Shah said.

He said his government has earmarked funds worth Rs 28,000 crore for the clean Ganga mission and out of the 310 schemes envisaged under this, 116 have been completed.

Speaking at the event, Union Jal Shakti minister Gajendra Shekhawat said Ganga today is one amongst the ten cleanest rivers of the world and efforts put by the Modi government over the last five years has borne good results.

The Jammu and Kashmir administration on Friday revoked former Jammu and Kashmir chief minister and National Conference leader Farooq Abdullah's detention under the Public Safety Act. Abdullah had been under detention since August 5, 2019.

"In exercise of powers conferred under Section 19(1) of the Jammu and Kashmir Public Safety Act, 1978, the government hereby revokes the detention order bearing No. DMS/PSA/120/2019 issued by District Magistrate, Srinagar," the government said, in a statement.

The Rajya Sabha MP was booked under the PSA, and was kept under house arrest in the wake of Centre's decision to scrap Jammu and Kashmir's special status. The J&K's administration had in December extended his detention by another three months -- which was due to end this month.

Abdullah is the first of the three detained former chief ministers of the erstwhile state. NC vice president Omar Abdullah and Peoples Democratic Party president Mehbooba Mufti continue to remain in detention.

A close friend of Abdullah's, AS Dullat, also the former Research and Analysis Wing chief, met him at his Gupkar Road residence in February. Details of the meeting are, however, unknown.

A start-up firm in India's southern Kerala state has launched two robots to spread awareness about the fast-spreading coronavirus that has killed more than 4,000 people worldwide.

More than 134,500 people have been infected globally and over 4,900 have died, according to a Reuters tally of government announcements.

The robots, developed by Asimov Robotics, can be seen distributing face masks and sanitizers, giving information about the contagion and cleaning doors at a start-up complex in Kochi city.

"They are actually crowd-pullers. So people will gather around the robot and we can very effectively communicate this to the public," said Jayakrishnan T, the brains behind the robots.

The start-up is trying to put the robots into use at public places like airports and malls and have sought permission from authorities.

With just 74 confirmed cases of the virus and a single death, India, a country of 1.3 billion people, has so far fared better than elsewhere in Asia, Europe and North America.

Religion is a personal belief and whether to convert to a different faith or not is an individual's choice, the Delhi High Court said on Friday while declining to entertain a plea for stopping or regulating religious conversions.

A bench of Chief Justice D N Patel and Justice C Hari Shankar asked the petitioner, a lawyer, to withdraw the petition as it did not want to reject it.

"Why don't you withdraw it? Why should we reject it," the court said.

Subsequently, the petitioner BJP leader and lawyer Ashwini Kumar Upadhyay sought permission to withdraw the matter and the bench allowed him to do so.

When the petition came up for hearing, the court said, professing a religion was a matter of personal belief and whether to convert to a different religion was an individual's choice.

"Tell us how can we regulate it? What will we regulate? If someone is threatening someone or intimidating someone, it is an offence under the Indian Penal Code," the bench said and added there was no reason for an individual to succumb to threats, intimidation or allurement to convert to a different faith.

Upadhyay, in his plea, had contended that many individuals, NGOs and institutions are converting downtrodden persons, particularly of the Scheduled Caste/Scheduled Tribe community, by "intimidating, threatening, luring by monetary benefits and by other acts, including miracle healing, black magic and more".

"Many individuals/organisations have started conversions of SC/STs in rural areas and the situation is very alarming. The mass religious conversion of the socially economically downtrodden men, women and children, and, in particular of the scheduled caste and scheduled tribe community, is on the rise in the last 20 years," the petition had claimed.

It had also claimed that as per the 2011 census, Hindus constitute 79 per cent of the population down from 86 per cent in 2001 and if no action is taken "Hindus will become minority in India".

Upadhyay had suggested enacting of a law to prevent conversions by force or deceit and to award jail term for any violation.

As the world celebrated Women’s day this weekend, a group of men and women at the Army Officers Training Academy, Chennai were cherishing the completion of their 11-month gruelling and rigorous training. At the spectacular Passing out Parade, 167 Indian and 11 foreign cadets were commissioned as officers into the Indian and their respective foreign armies.

There were 136 Gentlemen cadets and 31 Lady cadets who passed out of the Academy, in addition to 11 cadets from friendly foreign countries such as Bhutan, Fiji and Papua New Guinea.

The parade was reviewed by Admiral Karambir Singh, Chief of the Naval Staff.

Among the commissioned officers were Veer Naris (a martyr's spouse) and various other pathbreakers who have overcome challenges and left behind comfortable jobs to don the Olive greens in service of the nation.

On the process of making provisions for Veer Naris to join the Army, Lt Gen A. Arun, the Chief Instructor of OTA Chennai told WION, “This is not a college or an academy. This is life. This is a life which you join and as co-travellers within the Army, we do not let go even if you fall, stumble or pass away. It is the strongest piece of thread that binds the fabric that is the Army. There is constant encouragement for a martyr’s spouse to join the Army. It starts with counselling, then the lady herself has to choose and we facilitate the choice. But still, not everyone makes it, however, we encourage them to make it.”

“For the Veer Naris, there is no dispensation in the standards to be achieved, except for the age criteria which is relaxed for them. Most of them are elder than the other ladies and gentlemen in their batch, but there is no difference in the standards they have achieved. We don’t let go of our families”, he added.

WION spoke to some of these inspiring people to understand their journey:

Lieutenant Aahana

Wife of Late Major Arvind Bazala

74 Armored, Army Aviation

“I got married in 2015 to an Army Officer… But unfortunately, I lost him in a chopper crash, he was an Army Aviator. Being a Fuji wife I decided to take the legacy ahead. I did my SSB exam, cleared it and came here and did a year of gruelling training and have enjoyed it. Today I am here as a commissioned officer, to live the dreams of my husband personally and professionally.

Lieutenant Gauri Prasad Mahadik

Wife of Late Major Prasad Ganesh Mahadik

“My dream was never to join the forces, I always wanted to be an officer's wife. On Dec 30, 2017, when I lost my husband, after 10 days, it was very difficult for me. I was clueless, what was going to be my life without him. Being a working woman in Mumbai and staying alone. I said no, but he always wanted me to be happy always. My motivation was to continue and join the forces. Finally, I’m here wearing his stars they are his stars only."

"My family was very supportive, initially, my mother and mother in law were a little sceptical.. but they accepted for my happiness."

"For the next generation who will be joining, this is the best profession and if you want to serve the country come ahead do your training, be physically fit and just have a great career. For me its not a profession or a career as such. But today I have done it”.

Lieutenant Ipupu Mena

2nd-ever cadet from Arunachal Pradesh

“When I first dreamt of joining the Army it was an impossible dream for me. But I never stopped dreaming and I worked hard for it. I didn’t have many people to guide me. But now that I’m here and have achieved it, I’ll give my best to serve the country and the organization. I’m happy as my parents are really proud of what I’ve done. Also, I’m glad that I’ll be able to help all the people out there in my state who want to join the army and be a guiding light for them."

"Mostly my people don’t know much about the Army. Even though young kids have a feeling about joining the Army they weren’t open about it and didn’t know how to join. Looking at me, they are inspired and they are thinking about it as a possible dream. I will be helping them in every way that I can to help them serve the country”

Lieutenant Naveen Udameshi

Former Wiring Harness Engineer at Mercedes Benz

"I used to work for Mercedes Benz Research and development as a wiring harness engineer. I had worked there for over two and a half years. People ask me why did you join the Army by leaving behind an illustrious and luxurious career when you had a good package and could go to Germany for work. But there was something that was pulling me towards the Indian Army. The passion and feeling that you get from serving your country and commanding your men, it doesn’t measure up to the luxury or the money that you get in the corporate sector. We as Army guys sleep peacefully as we have done something that benefits our citizens, be it a rescue during a natural disaster or fighting a war. I had done eight SSB attempts and this was my last attempt, once I cleared I didn’t think twice and even my company supported me well and here I am getting commissioned."
