Prisoners in the central jail here are working overtime to produce facemasks to prevent the deadly COVID-19 striking. In addition to providing protection to fellow inmates and prison staff, the produce will be shared with nine district and sub jails falling under Muzaffarpur Central Prison as well, Deputy Superintendent of the jail Sunil Kumar Maurya said.

From supplications at places of worship to hectic activities at the biggest hospital, this north Bihar district is witnessing invocation of all powers, human and otherwise, to prevent novel coronavirus hitting them.

Although nobody has so far tested positive for the dreaded virus in Bihar, where the state government has imposed a semi-lockdown as a preventive measure, Muzaffarpur which hit the headlines last year for losing close to 200 children to an outbreak of brain fever seems determined not to fall prey to yet another virulent affliction.

On making of facemasks by about 50 prisoners, the Deputy Superintendent of the jail said, “We have had a tradition of producing fabric at the Muzaffarpur Central Jail. An idea was floated why not use the skills acquired for producing masks which are in great demand but in short supply. The local administration seems impressed with the endeavour of the social outcasts to rise to a global challenge.

“It is a welcome step. Despite all precautions, we never know who is going to catch the infection at which place. The efforts by prisoners to protect themselves and the staff manning their premises is laudable. “Full assistance will be provided to Central Jail authorities in supply of the masks to other prisons,” Sub Divisional Magistrate (East) Kundan Kumar said.

A conservative town inhabited by a deeply religious citizenry, Muzaffarpur is also witnessing prayer congregations at temples and mosques in keeping with the tradition here of people of all faiths coming together when faced with a major challenge.

The Garib Nath temple, a renowned shrine devoted to Lord Shiva which attracts devotees from far and wide, is witness to the power of faith trumping the biggest fears as the footfall seems to have increased since the outbreak.

The temples mahant Vinay Pathak says, “faith can move mountains. People come here in search of strength to face a crisis which has caused worldwide scare. We advise the visitors to conduct regular ‘havans’ at their houses just like we have been performing here.

“The smoke emitted by burning of purified offerings cleanses the air and, who knows, could be an antidote as well,” Pathak added.

Chanting of ‘Mahamrityunjay mantra’, which the faith believe to be potent enough to dispel illness and untimely death, is taking place round the clock at the shrine in addition to ‘havans’, the mahant said.

Just a few yards away stands the Chhata Chowk mosque where large number of devotees appear in skull-caps to offer namaz.

“It is a pandemic threatening to engulf the entire world and dua (prayers) are needed as much as dawa (medicines). May God, who is one, listen to the common wish expressed by humanity in myriad ways,” says Imtiaz Ahmed, a devout local resident.

Meanwhile, the health authorities are busy with their own efforts, not leaving prevention and cure to divine intervention.

District Medical Officer Shailesh Kumar Singh says a total of 42 people here who have come from abroad, have been tested but their results have been negative. “Nonetheless, a five-bed special ward has been set up at the Sadar Hospital, manned by medical staff armed with a special kit comprising medicines and other logistics required for primary care of those with suspected symptoms,” he said.

The SKMCH referral hospital, which bore the brunt of last years brain fever epidemic accounting for over 120 deaths is fully geared up to meet the latest challenge.

SKMCH superintendent Sunil Shahi says “we have a 30-ward insulation ward ready. Samples of patients with suspected symptoms are being routinely sent to RMRI, Patna. We appeal to all to remain alert, but avoid panic.”

Coronavirus effect: Bihar jail inmates producing masks to protect prisoners and prison staff from virus

India is currently at Stage 2 of the coronavirus pandemic. This, according to the Indian Council of Medical Research (ICMR), means that at present, there is no community transmission of the virus.

Additionally, India has taken a slew of important measures to control the spread of the novel coronavirus, which include putting people who had been exposed to the infection under quarantine. The government also has made arrangements for the quarantined people to not get bored while sitting at home.

The quarantined will soon be given a collection of speeches of Prime Minister Narendra Modi to keep them company.

"We regularly distribute the copies of these speeches to various dignitaries, as well as to schools and colleges on various occasions," a source aware of the development told Business Standard. This reading material could also be distributed at all the quarantine centres across the country.

Among other measures taken by India, all international passengers coming to India are being screened at airports. Those who display symptoms or have a recent history of travel to or residence in countries reporting local transmission of COVID-19 are being compulsorily quarantined.

India has so far recorded 147 positive cases of COVID-19. Three people have passed away.

Sports and leisure activities meant for special children are hardly imaginable, as they remain dependent on their wheelchairs or simply because there aren’t any activities that are designed specifically for them.

But nearly 250 special children had the opportunity to soar to the skies and have an unparalleled experience of parasailing, that offered them breathtaking views of the Besant Nagar beach in the Chennai.

The special parasailing event was conducted for five days as a part of the 35th-anniversary celebrations of Vidya Sagar, a rights-based organization, with emphasis on creating awareness in the community on issues related to disability and advocating rights for persons with disabilities. They support and train special children who are rejected by other schools, such as those with motor disability, visual, speech or intellectual impairment, autism and other learning difficulties.

“My kids too are special-needs kids and they experienced such adventure sports during their childhood and it made a huge difference, so we believe that why not most special children get to experience this? Even if the kids want to experience it, who gives them the chance? Even a small improvement in their self-esteem is a positive change” said Radha Ramesh, the director of Vidya Sagar.

A parachute equipped with a special harness that could accommodate 2 people- a special-needs child and a faculty member/trainer was attached to a jeep that would be driven for a few meters on the beach sand, thus helping the strong breeze to inflate and elevate the parachute. For nearly 5 minutes the child and the faculty would be suspended mid-air to enjoy the breathtaking views.

“For our needs, we are using a better harness, more safety measures are in place and around 15-20 staff are present for ensuring it happens with utmost care. We've also got the requisite permission from the authorities. Sports is always important for children, our kids dream of having a wheelchair-friendly path until the beach. All over the world beaches are accessible and Wheelchairs can go till the water, but unfortunately, that’s not the case in India. So we thought that parasailing can be made a reality for our kids and they can see and enjoy how the world looks like from a height” Poonam Natrajan, the founder of Vidya Sagar told WION.

Vidya Sagar provides delivery of services, focus on early intervention, special education, physiotherapy, speech and communication therapy, vision training, occupational therapy, co-curricular activities, counselling, vocational training, exploring and creating employment opportunities and training of resource persons to work in the field of disability.

Meena, a parent who has been associated with Vidya Sagar says that she is happy that the school will send kids on such adventure sports, only if it's very safe. It was done with the consent of parents and students, we’ve been shown then trials and also there were classes for a safety briefing.

“The kids enjoy when they are joined by their friends and it empowers them and celebrates inclusion”, she told WION.

The National Commission for Protection of Child Rights (NCPCR) on Wednesday wrote to the District Magistrate of South East Delhi to submit a report regarding the assembly of people at the Shaheen Bagh protest site amidst the coronavirus outbreak. In the letter, the NCPCR said it had received a complaint regarding the large gathering at the site which they said was taking place despite an advisory issued by the state and central government regarding safety and prevention for COVID-19.

The Delhi government has announced that any gathering — religious, family, social, political or cultural — of more than 50 people will not be allowed in the national capital till March 31 amid the coronavirus scare.

“You are kindly requested to take necessary action in view of advisory issued by the State Government and the Central Government regarding safety and prevention for COVID-19 and submit a report to the Commission within three days from the date of issue of this letter,” the letter from NCPCR said.

Hundreds of people, including women and children, are staying put on the road as part of their protest against the Citizenship (Amendment) Act (CAA).

Protests against the CAA had started on December 15 last year at Shaheen Bagh and eventually at other places in the national capital and elsewhere in the country.

The coronavirus outbreak has precipitated a crisis on the world with more than 1,70,000 cases having been recorded so far. The World Health Organisation has declared the outbreak a pandemic, and severe measures are being taken across the world to curb the spread of the virus.

India, on its part, has also been taking desperate measures to control the spread of the novel virus, and COVID-19 -- the disease it causes. The Central government on Monday announced it would not welcome arrivals from European nations, including the United Kingdom, and Turkey.

This includes Indian citizens too.

In a statement on Tuesday, Air India said, "All pax travelling to UK and Europe, may kindly note that in view of the DGCA instructions regarding travel and visa restrictions related to the COVID-2019, all flights to/from UK and Europe will operate only till 18th March 2020 & will remain suspended from 19th to 31st March, 2020."

This piece of information came as a shock to thousands of Indian students studying abroad.

Reports, however, say the delay is temporary, as this order applies only till March 31.

Reports add the temporary ban is just a way to stem the spread of the virus, and has been undertaken as many positive cases from India were traced back to have a history of travel to or from European countries.

In a statement on Tuesday, Air India said, "All pax travelling to UK and Europe, may kindly note that in view of the DGCA instructions regarding travel and visa restrictions related to the COVID-2019, all flights to/from UK and Europe will operate only till 18th March 2020 & will remain suspended from 19th to 31st March, 2020." This piece of information came as a shock to thousands of Indian students studying abroad. Reports, however, say the delay is temporary, as this order applies only till March 31. This applies to every one. Indians can go back to India through other countries. — India in the UK (@HCI_London) March 16, 2020 × Reports add the temporary ban is just a way to stem the spread of the virus, and has been undertaken as many positive cases from India were traced back to have a history of travel to or from European countries.
