Coronavirus confirmed cases rise to 166 in India

The entire world is in a lockdown due to the rapid increase in the number of confirmed cases of coronavirus. The World Health Organisation (WHO) has term the spread as a pandemic, and COVID-19, the disease it results in, has claimed the lives of 9,390 people. Out of the 2,30,717 cases, 86,261 have recovered.

In absence of any medication, or proven cure, social distancing appears to be the best possible therapy against the novel coronavirus. Especially for senior citizens, and kids -- who are the biggest risk of contracting the virus.

To this end, it's believed educational institutes have been closed in 102 countries, forcing 850 million students out of their classrooms.

They are locked inside their homes. And in most of the cases, neither the parents nor the students know what to do next.

But as they say the show must go on. And learning most certainly has to.

There are several media through which you can make sure your kids don't skip their lessons.

One of the methods is distance learning. Online alternatives play an important role in this. The concept may be new but quite simple. And home-learning is not necessarily born out of uninterrupted internet access. After all, we grew up learning without the internet.

Home-learning involves three key parties -- the student, the teacher, and most importantly, the parents.

There are a lot of learn-from-home sites to help. These are virtual classrooms. And they are just as interactive as the four walls in the school.

The teacher can see every student on the screen. And vice versa.

Most of these sites have reduced their membership fee keeping the circumstances in mind.

Many learn-from-home sites have been made free of cost, and websites are offering virtual tours of museums too.

World in a lockdown due to coronavirus: How your kids can utilise the free time

The novel coronavirus has triggered an unprecedented tragedy on the human race, inspiring the World Health Organisation (WHO) to term the spread as a pandemic. COVID-19, the disease coronavirus results in, has claimed the lives of 9,390 people across the world. Out of the 2,30,717 cases, 86,261 have recovered.

The Indian government has taken all possible measures in order to stem the growth of the virus. But there are a few people who have been spreading misinformation in the name of news.

One of the self-proclaimed experts is Ashwini Kumar Choubey, a minister of state for health and family welfare. In an interview outside the parliament, the minister was quite certain that Vitamin D kills the coronavirus.

According to him, the sun is the hottest between 11 am and 2 pm. If we sit for 15 minutes, our Vitamin D levels will improve. "It will also improve immunity and kill viruses like coronavirus," he asserted.

But, is it backed by Science? We don't think so.

The advice does not even feature in the ministry's list of preventive measures.

Another lawmaker, Suman Haripriya, a Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) MLA from Assam, said the excreta and the urine of a cow can well be used as a potion to cure coronavirus.

Interesting thought! But not required.

As one would expect, there is no scientific evidence on the effectiveness of cow urine on this virus either.

But in New Delhi, a group of people took the MLA's advice rather seriously. A cow urine drinking party was held to promote its use for tackling the virus.

Leading the bizarre party was the president of the All India Hindu Mahasabha -- Swami Chakrapani. His logic was the Indian government was wrong in promoting foreign medicines.

"The government is creating a panic in the country, and promoting foreign medicines. Our saints and gurus have for ages used cow urine as a remedy to stay fit. This is just government's agenda to create fear and panic," he blabbered, adding, "we have gathered here and are praying for world peace. We will make offering to the corona God to calm it down. And we pray to 'gaay maata' to help us fight the virus and urge everyone to drink cow urine."

The chief minister of India's largest state -- Uttar Pradesh, Yogi Adityanath, has found another cure. According to him, no mental stress means no coronavirus.

Ramdas Athawale, Union Minister for Social Justice, organised a prayer meet for the 'dead'ly virus. And kind of requested the virus and die and go away.

Looks like the request hasn't been accept yet. In fact this seems to have angered the virus more, as it has spread to 14 states and five union territories across India.

Confirmed cases of coronavirus have now gone up to over 170 -- including the four people who has died.

So, it's in your able hands what to do -- follow precaution, or such fake remedies.

And we pray to 'gaay maata' to help us fight the virus and urge everyone to drink cow urine." The chief minister of India's largest state -- Uttar Pradesh, Yogi Adityanath, has found another cure. Social distancing is the best way to keep the virus at bay, and even Prime Minister Narendra Modi agrees with this. You ask what should be done at the fake news? LAUGH IT OFF. Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Thursday emphasised social distancing -- the act of physically distancing oneself from others -- as the only way to stem the spread of the novel coronavirus.

In his 30-minute-long televised address to the nation, PM Modi pleaded to the countrymen to exercise "restraint" while interacting with others, and resolve to fight COVID-19.

PM Modi also propounded the enforcement of 'Janata Curfew' on March 22 (Sunday) from 7 am to 9 pm -- under which nobody, apart from people involved in duties of emergency and national importance, shall come out of their respective houses.

"If possible, please call at least 10 people every day and tell them about the 'Janta Curfew' as well as the measures to prevent coronavirus," he added.

"This crisis has engulfed the entire human race. For the past two months, we have been watching with concern the news about coronavirus spreading across the world. Till now, Science has not been able to find a proper remedy for coronavirus and no vaccine has been developed yet. In such a situation, it is natural to worry," PM Modi said.

He added, "For the last few days, it looks like if we are safe from coronavirus. This belief is not right. Hence, it is very important for every Indian to remain aware and alert."

PM Modi also asked the countrymen to thank people who have been running the emergency and nationally important services despite the global scare. To ensure this, on March 22, a siren will be sounded at 5 pm -- on hearing which people should stand at the doorsteps and on the balconies and clap, ring bells, or sing to thank those who have let go "social distancing" and worked tirelessly for the larger good of the nation.

The prime minister said, "The government of India is keeping a close watch on the track record of the spread of coronavirus. Resolution and restraint is very important in combat against this global epidemic. As citizens, people need to strengthen their resolve to follow the advisories issues by state and central governments to fight coronavirus.

PM Modi also urged the nation to ease the pressure on health services. He said, "Postpone elective surgeries by a month, avoid routine check-ups to ease pressure on health services. I request the countrymen to avoid visiting hospitals for routine check ups. If you have appointment for any non-essential surgery, please postpone for one month. We should keep in mind that pressure should not come on hospitals."

With several states going on partial lockdown as a part of precautionary measures against the Coronavirus, isolated incidents of racism are on the rise against people from the North-Eastern states of India. Given the large number of people from the North East who are settled in many other states and cities of the country, such cases of racial discrimination are a cause for concern. The community hopes that an advisory from the Ministry of Home Affairs (MHA) to all the states would be very helpful in allaying their fears and creating more awareness.

Two incidents of racism in Chennai have come to the notice of the North East community after Monday when the State government decided to shut the malls, cinema halls, and educational institutions across the state of Tamil Nadu. The shut down until March 31st means that students would be out of their hostels and those working in the informal sector would be out of work and in some cases looking to return home.

“We have come across incidents where men and women from our community have been shouted at in public places. Some miscreants and ill-informed people look at us and scream Corona! Our features may be similar to those in the Eastern part of the world, but our fellow Indians should know that we have different types of people in this country. Such discriminatory remarks shouldn’t be happening and we Indians should be united as this is a global crisis. Such incidents are very unfortunate given that there are over 10,000 people from the North East who are in Chennai. They are engaged in academic pursuits, professional careers, and they also work in the malls, restaurants and other informal sectors” Wapang Toshi, President, North East India Welfare Association Chennai, told WION.

The availability of fewer flights, trains coupled with the higher ticket prices and apprehensions about travel has resulted in many people worried about their continued stay in the city.

“We are Expecting situation to come down and seriously hope and pray that it doesn’t go from bad to worse. We have requested an appointment with the Home Secretary in Tamil Nadu to personally apprise him of the situation. Also, the tweet by Minister Kiren Rijjiju has also come as a great relief for us. We are highly anticipating the advisory in this regard from the Ministry of Home Affairs”, Toshi added.

Responding to the instances of hate and racial remarks against the Northeast people, Minister for State for Minority Affairs, Kiren Rijiju had tweeted on Wednesday, “Some incidents of racial remarks against North-East people have emerged in some parts of India in the wake of #Coronavirus due to cultural ignorance, prejudice mindset & lack of understanding. The matter discussed with NE Division, MHA. The strict advisory is being issued to the States.”
