Protect soldiers' human rights: Army kids write to NHRC against stone-pelters

In the wake of a series of stone-pelting incidents and mob attacks on army personnel in Jammu and Kashmir, army kids have moved the National Human Rights Commission and filed a petition to protect army personnel's human rights.

"As young Indians and citizens of this great country, especially as children of army personnel, we are concerned about the state of affairs of the troops serving in the disturbed areas and we are compelled to approach the Hon'ble Commission to seek intervention in the matter and initiate appropriate inquiry in the incidents of violations of human rights of the members of the armed forces," read the official letter.

The letter noted that the FIRs registered against the stone pelters and violence perpetrators have been withdrawn upon the direction of the State government.

The letter also noted that other countries "would never tolerate such indignities rained upon their armed forces," and laid out in detail, punishment that is meted out to perpetrators in other countries.

"Being concerned for the safety of soldiers and officers of the Indian army, deployed in counter-insurgency areas in J&K and other states, we wish to draw your attention to the innumerable and frequent instances of violations of human rights of the army personnel," read the letter.

The letter further noted that the children of army personnel were greatly disturbed by "the recent incident of an unruly and disruptive mob hurling stones at an army convoy in Shopian, J&K".

The letter gave out a detailed account of incidents where army personnel were attacked in the past year as well as in January 2018.
