For generations, cookbooks have been a staple in every kitchen. Yet with the influx of online recipes, many had been relegated to the back shelf. That changed in 2020 as more people began cooking and baking at home during the pandemic lockdowns. Will there still be a place for the humble cookbook in the future? Watch this video to find out.

World of Food S2 | Are cookbooks really out of fashion?

Cheese, which is rich and creamy, tastes delicious on a cracker, with fresh fruit, or sprinkled on top of a bowl of chilli. The majority of Americans simply love it. The annual per capita consumption is 40 pounds, or slightly more than 1.5 ounces per day, suggests The Washington Post, an American daily newspaper. However, when people talk about their fondness for cheese, it’s often in a guilty way, as in, “Cheese is my weakness.”

“Cheese is packed with nutrients like protein, calcium and phosphorus, and can serve a healthy purpose in the diet,” said Lisa Young, an adjunct professor of nutrition at New York University, according to The Washington Post.

As per the outlet, research shows that even full-fat cheese won’t necessarily make you gain weight or give you a heart attack. It seems that cheese doesn’t raise or reduce your risk for chronic diseases, such as heart disease and Type 2 diabetes, and some studies show it might even be protective.

Good bacteria, lower saturated fat risks

It’s easy to see why people might feel conflicted about cheese. For years, the U.S. dietary guidelines have said eating low-fat dairy is best because whole-milk products, such as full-fat cheese, have saturated fat, which can raise LDL (bad) cholesterol levels, a known risk for heart disease. Cheese has also been blamed for weight gain and digestive issues such as bloating. It turns out, though, that cheese may have been misunderstood.

Yes, it’s high in calories: Some types have 100 calories or more per ounce. And it’s rich in saturated fat. So why is it okay for most people to eat it? “Cheese is more than its saturated fat content,” said Emma Feeney, an assistant professor at the Institute of Food and Health at University College Dublin who studies the effect cheese has on health.

Old-school thinking on nutrition has been focused on individual nutrients — such as fats or protein — that either promote or prevent disease. It’s not clear that this is the wrong approach, but nutrition experts are now putting more emphasis on the entire food and how its structure, nutrients, enzymes and other components interact with one another.

When milk is transformed into cheese, the process changes the way the nutrients and other components in it are chemically arranged. This has an effect on how it’s digested and processed by the body, which can lead to health effects that are different from the effects of eating the same nutrients in another form, such as butter.

In 2018, Feeney led a six-week clinical trial in which 164 people each ate an equal amount of dairy fat either in the form of butter or cheese and then switched partway through the study.

“We found that the saturated fat in cheese did not raise LDL cholesterol levels to the same degree as butter did,” she said.

Experts have varying theories about why the saturated fat in cheese is less harmful. “Some studies show that the mineral content in cheese, particularly calcium, may bind with fatty acids in the intestine and flush them out of the body,” Feeney said. Other studies suggest that fatty acids called sphingolipids in cheese may increase the activity of genes that help with the body’s breakdown of cholesterol.

When cheese is made, it gains some beneficial compounds, too. “Vitamin K can form during the fermentation process,” said Sarah Booth, director of the Vitamin K Laboratory at the Jean Mayer USDA Human Nutrition Research Center on Aging at Tufts University in Boston. The vitamin is important for blood clotting, and bone and blood vessel health.

And as a fermented food, “both raw and pasteurized cheeses contain good bacteria that can be beneficial to the human gut microbiota,” says Adam Brock, vice president of food safety, quality and regulatory compliance for Dairy Farmers of Wisconsin. This good bacteria, found mostly in aged cheeses such as cheddar and Gouda, help break down food, synthesize vitamins, prevent bacteria that cause illness from getting a foothold, and bolster immunity.

Weight gain, lactose misunderstandings

Cheese also seems to reduce the risk of weight gain and several chronic diseases. Cheese is a concentrated source of calories. But studies suggest that you don’t need to skip the cheese to keep the scale steady. In one, published in the New England Journal of Medicine, researchers set out to determine which foods were linked to weight gain by following 120,877 men and women in the United States for 20 years, looking at their weight every four years. The cheese wasn’t associated with either gain or loss, even for people who increased the amount of it they ate during the study.

One reason cheese may help control weight is that it may reduce appetite more than other dairy products.

Cardiovascular disease: A large meta-analysis of 15 studies published in the European Journal of Nutrition that looked at cheese’s effect on cardiovascular disease found that people eating the most (1.5 ounces per day) had a 10 per cent lower risk than those who didn’t eat any. Other analyses have found that cheese doesn’t seem to affect heart disease risk either way.

Diabetes and hypertension: Cheese and full-fat dairy also seem to be linked to a lower risk of both. In a study of more than 145,000 people in 21 countries, the researchers found that eating two daily servings of full-fat dairy or a mix of full-fat and low-fat was linked to a 24 and 11 per cent reduced risk of both conditions compared with eating none. Eating only low-fat dairy slightly raised the risk. And among people who didn’t have diabetes or hypertension at the start of the nine-year study, those who ate two servings of dairy each day were less likely to develop the diseases during the study.

Lactose intolerance: Lactose, a sugar in milk, can be difficult for some people to digest, leading to diarrhoea, bloating and other gastrointestinal symptoms. But the bacteria used to make cheese digests most of the lactose in the milk, says Jamie Png of the American Cheese Society. Much of the lactose that remains is found in the whey, which gets separated from the curds toward the end of the cheesemaking process and is drained off. If you’re sensitive to lactose, stick to hard or aged cheese such as cheddar, provolone, Parmesan, blue, Camembert and Gouda, and minimize fresh soft cheese like ricotta and cottage cheese.

How much to eat of it

Even though cheese itself doesn’t appear to have negative effects on health, how you incorporate it into your overall diet matters.

In much of the research suggesting a neutral or beneficial effect, the highest amount of cheese people ate each day, on average, was about 1.5 ounces, but in some cases, it was up to 3 ounces. (An ounce of cheese is about the size of your outstretched thumb.)

In some studies, the health benefits of cheese were found to be the greatest when it replaced a less healthful food like red or processed meats. So there’s a big difference between crumbling some blue cheese over a salad and serving up a pepperoni pizza with double cheese. “Incorporating cheese into a Mediterranean-style diet where you also include fruits, veggies, whole grains and other foods known to lower disease risk is going to be the most beneficial to your overall health,” Young said.

For those watching their sodium intake, cheese can be pretty salty. (The salt acts as a preservative.) If you’re eating about an ounce a day, it’s not a huge concern. Most types give you between 150 and 300 milligrams of sodium per ounce. (The daily value is no more than 2,300 mg.) Eat more, though, and the sodium can add up.

As per The Washington Post, the form cheese takes may also influence how it affects health. “Many of the studies on cheese and health use cheese in a nonmelted form,” Feeney said, adding, “We still don’t know how melting or cooking affects the health outcomes, for example, eating cheese on pizza or in cooked dishes like casseroles.”

Among the many revelations made in his memoir 'Spare', Prince Harry seemingly has also addressed the rumour that has plagued the loyal family for years. Harry has for the first time talked about the long-standing 'joke' on how he is not the biological son of King Charles.

In his book 'Spare' which hit stands on January 10, Prince Harry has recalled how King Charles himself would 'joke' about not being Harry's father during his childhood.

"'Who knows if I'm really the Prince of Wales? Who knows if I'm even your real father? Maybe your real father is in Broadmoor, darling boy,'" Harry wrote about his father. "Pa liked telling stories, and this was one of the best in his repertoire," Harry added.

Harry recalled that his father would "laugh and laugh" about the rumour, he himself found it to be "a remarkable unfunny joke, given the rumour circulating just then that my actual father was one of Mummy's former lovers: Major James Hewitt."

The late Princess Diana had admitted during her 1995 interview that she had an affair with Hewitt while she was still married to King Charles.

"One cause of this rumour was Major Hewitt's flaming ginger hair, but another cause was sadism," Harry wrote in his memoir. "Tabloid readers were delighted by the idea that the younger child of Prince Charles wasn't the child of Prince Charles. They couldn't get enough of this 'joke,' for some reason. Maybe it made them feel better about their lives that a young prince's life was laughable."

Prince Harry put to rest the rumour and clarified, "Never mind that my mother didn't meet Major Hewitt until long after I was born, the story was simply too good to drop."

The rumour was in fact addressed and refuted by Hewithh himself during a 2002 interview.

"There really is no possibility whatsoever that I am Harry's father. I can absolutely assure you that I am not," he said at the time. "Admittedly the red hair is similar to mine and people say we look alike. I have never encouraged these comparisons and although I was with Diana for a long time I must state once and for all that I'm not Harry's father. When I first met Diana, Harry was already a toddler," he noted.

Prince Harry's memoir 'Spare' has made several shocking revelations. Harry has claimed that he was assaulted by his older brother Prince William over Meghan Markle, he has called Queen consort Camilla a 'villain' and admitted that he grew uncomfortable after watching his wife Meghan Markle's 'love scenes' in 'Suits'.

Prince Harry addresses rumours of not being King Charles' biological son in new memoir

One question that we often ask our nutritionists - what and how can we eat to age well - has been answered in a new study published by JAMA Internal Medicine on Monday. The study has found that a variety of healthy eating habits can lower the chance of premature death along with cardiovascular disease, cancer, and even respiratory illness.

After examining 36 years of health data collected from 75,230 women participating in the Nurses' Health Study and from 44,085 men in the Health Professionals Follow-up Study, the researchers discovered that participants who adhered to at least one of four healthy eating patterns - the Healthy Eating Index 2015 (HEI-2015), Alternative Mediterranean Diet (AMED), Healthful Plant-based Diet Index (HPDI), and Alternative Healthy Eating Index (AHEI) - were less likely to die prematurely or have major diseases.

All participants were free of cardiovascular disease or cancer at the beginning of the study and completed dietary questionnaires every four years. Their information was scored based on each of the four dietary pattern indexes. All share key components including whole grains, fruits, vegetables, nuts, and legumes, although other components differ across different eating patterns.

A higher score on at least one of the indexes was associated with a lower risk of premature death from all causes, and from cardiovascular disease, cancer, and respiratory disease. Higher scores on the AMED and the AHEI were associated with a lower risk of death from neurogenerative disease. The results were consistent for non-Hispanic white, non-Hispanic Black, and Hispanic people.

The findings are consistent with the current Dietary Guidelines for America. The current DGAs (2015-2020) recommend multiple healthy eating patterns that can be adapted to individual food traditions and preferences. An updated version of the Guidelines is released every five years by the U.S. Departments of Health and Human Services (HHS) and Agriculture (USDA).

"The Dietary Guidelines for Americans are intended to provide science-based dietary advice that promotes good health and reduces major chronic diseases. Thus, it is critical to examine the associations between DGAs-recommended dietary patterns and long-term health outcomes, especially mortality," said corresponding author Frank Hu, Fredrick J. Stare Professor of Nutrition and Epidemiology and chair of the Department of Nutrition.

"It is important to evaluate adherence to DGAs-recommended eating patterns and health outcomes, including mortality, so that timely updates can be made," Hu stated. "Our findings will be valuable for the 2025-2030 Dietary Guidelines Advisory Committee, which is being formed to evaluate current evidence surrounding different eating patterns and health outcomes."

"Our findings will be valuable for the 2025-2030 Dietary Guidelines Advisory Committee, which is being formed to evaluate current evidence surrounding different eating patterns and health outcomes." New study reveals best eating patterns to lower risk of premature death

We have known it for far too long and now there’s science backing it – keep a gap between your last meal of the day and bedtime. There’s also another added layer to it now – don’t eat your dinner too late in the night. You possibly knew about it already but researchers have now come up with reasons why eating too late in the night could be causing you sleep troubles.

Much like the circadian rhythm that controls our sleep, scientists think our bodies have a circadian clock for eating too. If you eat too late at night, you mess with the clock. You mess with that clock also if you eat at weird times or too close to bedtime. This in turn affects your sleep and your ability to maintain a healthy weight.

If you are someone who binge watches in the night and then gets tempted for snacks, that is a big problem. Researchers have had groups of people eat more calories at breakfast than dinner, while the other group eats more at dinner than breakfast. They found out that the first group ends up losing more weight while the second group ends up gaining it.

In studies, people who eat most of their calories at dinner also tend to skip breakfast, get worse sleep, eat more calories overall, and be obese. That said, skipping breakfast may not be the worst thing in the world.

What’s the best time to stop eating during evening?

The answer is at least three hours before you sleep. So if you have to sleep at 11pm, you should finish off eating at 8 pm. Best would be if you don’t snack at all post that dinner but if you can’t help yourself, you should limit it to something healthy.

Eat most of your calories earlier in the day and eat smaller meals instead of huge ones. This helps in weight loss.

Do you want to have a brain that works fast and ages slowly? Get a pet!

People over 50 years of age who have been pet owners for more than five years had better cognitive memory than people who didn't own one.

Research from the University of Michigan calls it 'the pet effect.' Having a pet not only protects your gut and heart but also slows down the ageing of your brain. Based on a national-level representative survey from 2010 to 2016, answers from more than 20,000 adults on their pet status prove that pet owners are happy, healthy, and intelligent.

The effect of owning pets was more prominent in people above 65 years of age when symptoms of dementia occur. People under this age bracket who have had a pet for more than five years showed better short-term and long-term memory for words than people who didn't.

The researchers tested the participants over six years, and the pet owners achieved better results. However, the findings are only an association and 'the pet effect' is not an actual psychological phenomenon. It might be the opposite case suggesting that people with better cognitive abilities become better pet companions.

But the study does hook with other studies that say having a pet is good for you. Having a pet keeps you on your toes, keeping your brain and body active and healthy. Moreover, animals bring good gut bacteria into the house.

Or perhaps, pets make us happy with their furry tales and innocent eyes!

Want an agile, sharp brain even after 50, get a pet!

Eating almonds daily has been found to support metabolic recovery following strenuous exercise by increasing beneficial fat by 69 per cent, according to a new study. The researchers concluded that daily consumption of almonds leads to a change in metabolism, downregulating inflammation and oxidative stress from exercise and enabling the body to recover faster.

"We conclude that almonds provide a unique and complex nutrient and polyphenol mixture that may support metabolic recovery from stressful levels of exercise," corresponding author Dr David C Nieman, a professor at the North Carolina Research Campus, said. The findings have been published in Frontiers in Nutrition.

"Almonds have high amounts of protein, healthy types of fats, vitamin E, minerals, and fibre. And the brown skin of almonds contains polyphenols that end up in the large intestine and help control inflammation and oxidative stress," said Nieman.

According to the study, a randomized controlled trial showed that female and male participants who ate 57g of almonds daily for one month had more of the beneficial fat 12,13-DiHOME (12,13-dihydroxy-9Z-octadecenoic acid) in their blood immediately after a session of intense exercise than control participants.

This molecule, a so-called oxylipin, an oxidized fat, is synthesized from linoleic acid by brown fat tissue, and has a beneficial effect on metabolic health and energy regulation, the study said.

"Here we show that volunteers who consumed 57g of almonds daily for one month before a single 'weekend warrior' exercise bout had more beneficial 12,13-DiHOME in their blood immediately after exercising than control volunteers.

"They also reported feeling less fatigue and tension, better leg-back strength, and decreased muscle damage after exercise than control volunteers," said Nieman.

Immediately after exercise, the concentration of the beneficial 12,13-DiHOME was 69 per cent higher in the blood plasma of participants in the almond group than in participants in the control group.

12,13-DiHOME is known to increase the transport of fatty acid and its uptake by skeletal muscle, with the overall effect of stimulating metabolic recovery after exercise.

The reverse pattern was found for another oxylipin, the mildly toxic 9,10-Dihydroxy-12-octadecenoic acid (9,10-diHOME), which was 40 per cent higher immediately after exercise in the blood of the control group than in the almond group.

Unlike 12,13-DiHOME, 9,10-diHOME has been shown to have negative effects on overall health and the body's recovery to exercise.

According to the research, the clinical trial involved 38 men and 26 women between the ages of 30 and 65, who didn't engage in regular weight training. Approximately half were randomized to the almond diet group, and the other half to the control group, who daily ate a calorie-matched cereal bar.

The researchers took blood and urine samples before and after the four-week period of dietary supplementation. Performance measures included a 30-second Wingate anaerobic test, a 50-metre shuttle run test, and vertical jump, bench press, and leg-back strength exercises, the study said.

Additional blood and urine samples were taken immediately after this 90-minute session of "eccentric exercise" and daily for four days afterwards, the study said.

After each blood draw, the participants filled out the 'Profile of Mood States' (POMS) questionnaire to quantify their mental state, and rated their delayed onset muscle soreness - that is, pain and stiffness felt after unaccustomed or strenuous exercise - on a 10-interval scale, the study said.

As expected, the 90-minute exercise led to an increase in the volunteers' self-reported feeling of muscle damage and muscle soreness, as well as an increased POMS score, indicating self-reported decreased vigour and increased fatigue, anxiety, and depression, the study said.

The exercise also resulted in transiently elevated levels of pro-inflammatory cytokines such as IL-6, IL-8, IL-10, and MCP-1 in the blood, consistent with minor muscle damage. However, these changes in cytokines were equal in the almond and cereal bar groups, the study said. For those who exercise regularly, eating almonds each day might be the ideal new year's resolution.

Y2K era point-and-shoot camera trends again with Gen Z influencers

This year, wedding festivities and celebrations are back in full force at wedding-related functions and events. Weddings can be pleasant, but they can also cause tension and anxiety because of social and familial expectations to be married, especially for unmarried women in India.

According to a recent study by the dating app, Bumble, nearly 2 in 5 (39 per cent) Indian daters believe that their families urge them to make traditional matches around the wedding season. When asked when they intend to get married, 39 per cent of respondents said that they feel under pressure. During the Indian wedding season, nearly a third (33 per cent) of the unmarried Indians surveyed say they feel compelled to enter a committed, long-term relationship.

In addition to the emphasis on togetherness at this time, single-shaming makes people feel as though they are being evaluated for being single. This usually happens as a result of unwanted inquiries and views about how they date. Single shaming, which refers to the concept that being single is only a temporary situation that needs to be rapidly addressed, is entrenched in pop culture and societal expectations in India.

The dating trend 'Consciously Single' is becoming more popular in India during this wedding season, according to Bumble, as single people, particularly women, are consciously choosing to remain single and not compromise on their preferences while being more deliberate about who and how they want to date.

According to a recent study by the dating app, 81 per cent of women polled in India said they felt more at ease being unmarried and living alone. When dating someone, 63 per cent of respondents say they won't give in to their preferences, needs, or requirements. In fact, according to a survey, 83 per cent of women say they are content to wait until they find the right person.

"The shaadi (wedding) season in India often brings experiences of single-shaming with questions and judgement about our dating lives. Often, the identity of a single woman is synonymous with being unmarried. This single-shaming also means that single women are anxious about attending wedding functions or family events in anticipation of people telling them that they are not trying hard enough, or trying to set them up in the traditional way. Attending a loved one's wedding instead of celebrating then often becomes a source of anxiety, when it shouldn't be!" shares Samarpita Samaddar, India Communications Director, Bumble.

"Consciously Single trend shows more women are being intentional in how and who they want to date. On Bumble, women are in control, choosing who and how they want to date, and what is important to them. We want to encourage women to date on their own timelines, making the best first moves as and when they want!" she adds.

Tips on how to navigate the wedding season:

When your parents ask, "When will you get married?" a smooth and respectful answer could be, "I'm focusing on myself right now and many things that are important to me." After all, we spend most of our time with ourselves. Therefore, focusing on yourself, treating yourself and paying close attention to your own needs and desires is a very important skill to master.

When that aunty suggests, "My nephew would be a great match for you!"

Who hasn't been there? Other people regularly think you would be a wonderful match for someone just because they are also single. Personality, interests, life goals or other needs don't seem to matter in front of societal expectations to get married within a set timeline. Stay cool as you can say, "I know you mean well, but I prefer taking control of my dating life when I feel like it. I will date on my own terms and that's better I think."

If mom asks, "Don't you want children? You'll be all alone after us."

Responding in a kind but determined way, "Thank you for your concern. I'm moving at my own pace," would be a competent answer in this situation. Your mom's concern is understandable, however, you should not let this stress you out and focus on your priorities.

When that relative or your neighbour wants to know, "Where is your better half?"

The term "better half" implies that one is not complete and less significant without this other person. Instead, we should see ourselves as a whole and worthy without a partner. Our happiness grows through self-awareness and maturity. You could answer something like: "Which half? I'm here, quite completely - and that feels really great!"

Also read: Beauty resolutions to achieve clear and healthy skin in 2023 According to a recent study by the dating app, 81 per cent of women polled in India said they felt more at ease being unmarried and living alone. Also read: Moisturiser, toner, serum: Correct order for your skincare routine, according to dermatologists "Consciously Single trend shows more women are being intentional in how and who they want to date. On Bumble, women are in control, choosing who and how they want to date, and what is important to them. We want to encourage women to date on their own timelines, making the best first moves as and when they want!" she adds. Tips on how to navigate the wedding season: When your parents ask, "When will you get married?" a smooth and respectful answer could be, "I'm focusing on myself right now and many things that are important to me." After all, we spend most of our time with ourselves. Therefore, focusing on yourself, treating yourself and paying close attention to your own needs and desires is a very important skill to master. When that aunty suggests, "My nephew would be a great match for you!" Who hasn't been there? Other people regularly think you would be a wonderful match for someone just because they are also single. Personality, interests, life goals or other needs don't seem to matter in front of societal expectations to get married within a set timeline. Stay cool as you can say, "I know you mean well, but I prefer taking control of my dating life when I feel like it. I will date on my own terms and that's better I think." If mom asks, "Don't you want children? You'll be all alone after us." Responding in a kind but determined way, "Thank you for your concern. I'm moving at my own pace," would be a competent answer in this situation. Your mom's concern is understandable, however, you should not let this stress you out and focus on your priorities. The term "better half" implies that one is not complete and less significant without this other person. Instead, we should see ourselves as a whole and worthy without a partner. Our happiness grows through self-awareness and maturity. You could answer something like: "Which half? I'm here, quite completely - and that feels really great!" What is 'Status Skin' and why everybody is talking about the beauty trend?

While getting more exercise, eating right, and making new friends are all good habits, new CU Boulder research suggests the addition of gardening can have a powerful impact. Funded by the American Cancer Society, the first-ever, randomised, controlled trial of community gardening found that those who started gardening ate more fibre and got more physical activity, two known ways to reduce the risk of cancer and chronic diseases. They also saw their levels of stress and anxiety significantly decrease.

The findings were published in the journal Lancet Planetary Health. “These findings provide concrete evidence that community gardening could play an important role in preventing cancer, chronic diseases, and mental health disorders,” said senior author Jill Litt, a professor in the Department of Environmental Studies at CU Boulder.

Filling the research gap!

Litt has spent much of her career seeking to identify affordable, scalable, and sustainable ways to reduce disease risk, especially among low-income communities. Gardening seemed an ideal place to start.

“No matter where you go, people say there’s just something about gardening that makes them feel better,” said Litt, who is also a researcher with the Barcelona Institute for Global Health.

But solid science on its benefits is hard to come by. Without evidence, it’s hard to get support for new programs, she said.

Some small observational studies have found that people who garden tend to eat more fruits and vegetables and have a healthier weight. But it has been unclear whether healthier people just tend to garden or whether gardening influences health.

Only three studies have applied the gold standard of scientific research, the randomized controlled trial, to the pastime. None have looked specifically at community gardening.

To fill the gap, Litt recruited 291 non-gardening adults, an average age of 41, from the Denver area. More than a third were Hispanic and more than half came from low-income households.

After the last spring frost, half were assigned to the community gardening group and half to a control group that was asked to wait one year to start gardening.

The gardening group received a free community garden plot, some seeds and seedlings, and an introductory gardening course through the nonprofit Denver Urban Gardens program and a study partner.

Both groups took periodic surveys about their nutritional intake and mental health, underwent body measurements, and wore activity monitors.

A fibre boost!

By fall, those in the gardening group were eating, on average, 1.4 grams more fibre per day than the control group–an increase of about 7 per cent.

The authors note that fibre exerts a profound effect on inflammatory and immune responses, influencing everything from how we metabolize food to how healthy our gut microbiome is to how susceptible we are to diabetes and certain cancers.

While doctors recommend about 25 to 38 grams of fibre per day, the average adult consumes less than 16 grams.

“An increase of one gram of fibre can have large, positive effects on health,” said co-author James Hebert, director of the University of South Carolina’s cancer prevention and control program.

The gardening group also increased their physical activity levels by about 42 minutes per week. Public health agencies recommend at least 150 minutes of physical activity per week, a recommendation only a quarter of the U.S. population meets. With just two to three visits to the community garden weekly, participants met 28 per cent of that requirement.

Study participants also saw their stress and anxiety levels decrease, with those who came into the study most stressed and anxious seeing the greatest reduction in mental health issues.

The study also confirmed that even novice gardeners can reap measurable health benefits of the pastime in their first season. As they have more experience and enjoy greater yields, Litt suspects such benefits will increase.

Blooming relationships

The study results don’t surprise Linda Appel Lipsius, executive director of Denver Urban Gardens (DUG), a 43-year-old nonprofit that helps about 18,000 people each year grow their own food in community garden plots.

“It’s transformational, even life-saving, for so many people,” Lipsius said.

Many DUG participants live in areas where access to affordable fresh fruits and vegetables is otherwise extremely limited. Some are low-income immigrants now living in apartments–having a garden plot allows them to grow food from their home country and pass on traditional recipes to their family and neighbours.

The social connection is also huge. “Even if you come to the garden looking to grow your food on your own in a quiet place, you start to look at your neighbour’s plot and share techniques and recipes, and over time relationships bloom,” said Litt, noting that while gardening alone is good for you, gardening in the community may have additional benefits. “It’s not just about the fruits and vegetables. It’s also about being in a natural space outdoors together with others.”

Litt said she hopes the findings will encourage health professionals, policymakers and land planners to look to community gardens, and other spaces that encourage people to come together in nature, as a vital part of the public health system. The evidence is clear, she added.

Gardening can help reduce cancer risk & boost mental health, new study finds

Prince Harry's memoir 'Spare' is yet to hit the stands but the book is already making headlines thanks to its explosive content. In his book, which hits the stand on January 10, Harry has claimed that his brother Prince William and his sister-in-law Kate Middleton encouraged him to wear a Nazi uniform at a costume party in 2005. Harry was 20 years old at that time.

According to a report on Page six, Harry reportedly has written that William and Kate had 'howled with laughter' when they had seen him in the Nazi outfit. Harry's photo of wearing a military shirt and red swastika armband holding a drink and a cigarette had made headlines back in 2005 and several had deemed his costume as 'inappropriate and insensitive'.

In the book, Harry claims that he debated between dressing as a Nazi or a pilot for the 'Native and Colonial'-themed costume party. Prince William also attended, dressed as a lion.

"I phoned Willy and Kate, and asked what they thought. Nazi uniform, they said," Harry writes, saying he brought the costume home and tried it on. "They both howled. Worse than Willy's leotard outfit! Way more ridiculous! Which, again, was the point."

In later years, Harry expressed deep remorse over the offensive outfit and called it "one of the biggest mistakes of my life," during a moment in the 'Harry & Meghan' docuseries on Netflix in December 2022.

"All I wanted to do was make it right," he added. And while he "could've just ignored it and probably made the same mistakes over and over again," he learned from the experience.

It's not about what we use but how we use certain skincare products that make a real difference! No matter how complex or easy your daytime and nighttime skincare regimes are, you will always need an expert's advice to understand what should be applied first and in what order. When applied in the correct sequence, you can reap maximum benefits from all of your products and avoid side effects or irritation.

To understand how we can layer moisturiser, toner, serum and facial oil among other products for maximum impact, we spoke to a few dermatologists and here's what they shared.

For your morning skincare routine, follow this order:

Oil-based cleanser

Water-based cleanser

Toner or astringent

Serum

Spot treatments

Eye Cream

Moisturiser

Facial oil

Sunscreen

Makeup

Also read: Forget pink blush, Gen-Z is obsessed with orange, blue, yellow and even white blushers

For your nighttime skincare routine, follow this order:

Makeup remover

Oil-based cleanser

Water-based cleanser

Exfoliator

Toner or hydrating mist

Serum

Overnight spot treatments

Eye cream

Facial oil

Sleeping mask

Now, you must remember that you don't necessarily have to use all the products mentioned above. You can alter your routine based on your needs. If you have dry skin, then use facial oil towards the end of your routine. If you have oily skin then you can skip the step altogether.

Similarly, if you have acne and breakouts, use a spot treatment during the routine. And, if you do not have acne problems, skip the part.

Morning skincare routines are all about protection and prevention so you must not skip necessary steps such as moisturizer and sunscreen. Night routines, on the other hand, focus on repairing the damage done during the day with thicker products that can be applied at night.

Moisturiser, toner, serum: Correct order for your skincare routine, according to dermatologists

Scientists have found that the baseline immune statuses in men previously infected with SARS-CoV-2 were altered in ways that changed the response to an exposure different from SARS-CoV-2.

The team of researchers systematically analysed the immune responses of healthy people who had been given the flu vaccine. From that data, they then compared the responses between those who had never been infected by SARS-CoV-2, the virus that causes COVID-19, and those who experienced mild cases but recovered.

The team led by John Tsang, an immunobiologist from Yale University, US, found that immune systems of men who had recovered from mild cases of COVID-19 responded more robustly to flu vaccines than women who had had mild cases or men and women who had never been infected.

“This was a total surprise,” said Tsang.

“Women usually mount a stronger overall immune response to pathogens and vaccines, but are also more likely to suffer from autoimmune diseases,” said Tsang.

The long-term effects of infection on the immune system had long intrigued Tsang. After the body has faced down a pathogen, does the immune system return to the previous baseline? Or does a single infection change it in ways that alter how it will respond not only to a familiar virus but also to the next new viral or bacterial threat it faces? Tsang, a professor at Yale University, had long believed that the immune system reverts to the previous stable baseline after viral infection.

The emergence of the COVID-19 pandemic in 2020 allowed him and colleagues to test that theory. The answer, they found, depends on the individual’s sex. The findings have been published in the journal Nature.

The findings may also be linked to an observation made early in the pandemic: Men were much more likely to die from a runaway immune response than women after contracting the COVID-19 virus. Even mild cases of COVID-19, the new findings suggest, might trigger stronger inflammatory responses in males than females, resulting in more pronounced functional changes to the male immune system, even long after recovery.

According to the study, their unbiased analysis of immune system status down to the individual cell level revealed several differences between COVID-recovered males and healthy controls and COVID-recovered females, both before and after receiving flu vaccinations.

For instance, previously infected males produced more antibodies to influenza and produced increased levels of interferons, which are produced by cells in response to infections or vaccines. Generally, healthy females have stronger interferon responses than their male counterparts, the study said.

Understanding the lingering effects of COVID-19 on the immune system is crucial, the authors said, since more than 600 million people worldwide have been infected so far, and the emergence of “long-COVID” symptoms in some people continues to be a major health concern.

“Our findings point to the possibility that any infection or immune challenge may change the immune status to establish new set points,” said lead author Rachel Sparks, from National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases (NIAID).

“The immune status of an individual is likely shaped by a multitude of prior exposures and perturbations,” said Sparks.

Tsang thinks these findings may also help scientists create better vaccines against diverse threats by, for instance, mimicking how mild COVID-19 changes the male immune baseline.

COVID-19 changes body’s immune response depending on sex, finds study

The frequency with which people travel and the variety of places visited are important factors, with those who travel more than 15 miles away from home more likely to report being in good health. Those who visit a wider range of locations are more likely to see friends and family. This increase in social participation is then associated with improved health. According to a new study led by UCL researchers, people who travel beyond the region of their localities feel healthier than those who remain closer to their homes.

Researchers say the results provide strong evidence of the need for investment in medium and long-distance transport options, such as better-serviced roads and access to trains and buses.

For the paper, published in Transport & Health, the researchers analysed travel in the north of England, where residents face worse health outcomes than the rest of England and many rural and suburban areas suffer from poor transport accessibility.

Specifically, they looked at the links between perceived constraints to travel outside of the local area, such as a lack of suitable public transport, and self-rated health, considering trip frequency, the number of different places visited, distance travelled, car use and public transport use.

Lead author Dr Paulo Anciaes (UCL Bartlett School of Environment, Energy & Resources) said, "We expected to find that restrictions on travel through a lack of access to suitable public transport or to a private car would be linked to residents’ perception of their health because of the lack of social participation."

"We explored the links between constraints to travel more than 15 miles from home, demographics and location and social participation in how residents perceived their own health, finding that the key variable is the number of different places people visit outside their local area. This links to more social participation and better health."

The researchers conducted an online survey of 3,014 nationally representative residents in the north of England. Constraints to travel have previously been identified as contributing to economic disadvantage and a lower sense of well-being in the region, but the impact on health hadn’t been analysed before. The team used a research technique called "path analysis", which uncovers the direct and indirect effects of constraints to travel outside of people’s local area.

The study found that the links between travel constraints, social participation and health are stronger among those aged over 55. Among this group, constraints to the number of different places people can travel to are linked to less frequent contact with friends and participation in clubs and societies.

Dr Anciaes explained, "Those aged over 55 are more likely to face other constraints to travel such as limited mobility. They are also more likely to suffer from loneliness. In the north of England, rural and suburban areas with limited access options are more likely to experience population loss as young people move to the cities in search of work and good travel options. Meanwhile, older generations are left behind in these areas with limited transport options. The range of places they can visit is low, leading to less social participation and lower levels of general health."

"The results of this study emphasise the need for public policies that reduce constraints to travel in the region, by providing better options for private and public transport that allows for more frequent and longer trips."

Study reveals travelling far from home is good for health

Prince Harry may have alleged that his father King Charles and the royal family have shown no sign of reconciliation in an upcoming interview, but sources close to the King have reportedly said he is ready to patch up with his younger son.

A Telegraph article states that King Charles wants to keep the communication channel open for Harry. "Those close to the king insist that he has always made clear how much he loves both of his sons, keeping communication channels open throughout the last few years, despite the many barbs from California," the British daily reported Tuesday, citing sources.

Prince Harry will appear in two tell-all interviews this upcoming weekend. In one of them, Harry stated he wants his brother and father "back." The Duke of Sussex even alleged that stories were planted as he and his wife, Meghan Markle, attempted to step back from royal duties. Both interviews will be aired on January 8, ahead of the release of his memoir, 'Spare', on January 10.

He will be speaking with ITV`s Tom Bradby as well as Anderson Cooper for his first US interview on '60 Minutes'. In a promo clip for his ITV interview, Harry is seen saying, "They`ve shown absolutely no willingness to reconcile."

"I would like to get my father back. I would like to have my brother back," he added of King Charles and Prince William. He also said "they feel as though it is better to keep us somehow as the villains," though it was not clear who he was referring to.

In a new one-minute segment shared by CBS News when Cooper asked Harry about his decision to go public as he stepped away from the royal family, he touched upon leaked stories by the palace. "Every single time I've tried to do it privately, there have been briefings and leaking and planting of stories against me and my wife," said Harry.

Previously, Harry made similar bombshell claims about the palace covering for other royal members in the couple's latest Netflix docuseries, 'Harry & Meghan'.

King Charles is open to reconciliation with Prince Harry: Reports

The US witnessed a whopping 1,375 per cent increase in the number of young children accidentally consuming edible containing cannabis in the last five years. Data from the America’s Poison Centers shows that more than 7,040 kids under the age of six were exposed to edible cannabis between 2017 and 2021.

The study showed that in 2017 there were 207 reported cases of accidental edible cannabis exposure in kids under six, which rose to 3,054 by 2021.

Edible cannabis often come in the form of candies, cookies, brownies and chocolates, things kids are attracted to. There are knock-offs of famous brands available in the black market that carry cannabis. Researchers have found that the packaging of some such products looks nearly identical to the real thing. There are Doritos, Cheetos, Nerds Rope and more. Some packages also have child-friendly cartoon characters.

In case the packaging mentions the presence of cannabis or THC, it’s often in small print, and most kids can’t read.

The centres handling poisoning calls reported that in 2020 alone, young kids’ accidental exposures to cannabis made up more than 40 per cent of all human poison exposure calls, according to the study published Tuesday in the journal Pediatrics.

“Honestly, we knew it was increasing. I work in the [emergency department] as well as taking calls for the poison center, and so even though I was seeing more cases coming through the ER, when we looked at the data nationwide, we were definitely surprised,” study co-author Dr. Antonia Nemanich, who works in emergency medicine and medical toxicology at Rush Emergency Medicine in Chicago, said.

While the exact reason behind the rise is not known, Dr. Nemanich says that there could be various reasons behind it. For eg, during the pandemic when kids were home more often, there was a rise. “There was a particular spike during the pandemic years,” she said.

According to a 2022 study, US states that legalized recreational cannabis use witnessed a 20 per cent more frequent use as compared to states that didn’t legalize it. Only eight states and the District of Columbia allowed recreational cannabis use in 2017, while 30 allowed it for medicinal purposes. The numbers saw a significant rise in 2021, to 19 and 40, respectively.

“I think all of that plays into this, and the regulations haven’t kept pace with the increased prevalence of the product,” Nemanich said.

Cannabis consumption can make kids very sick and lead to problems related to walking, sitting or breathing, according to the US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. According to the study, in nearly a quarter of the cases, the toddlers had to be admitted to the hospital. Several of them had to be admitted to the intensive care.

Adding 2023 to the dateline of our journals feels so surreal. And, seeing people share #NewYearNewMe posts on social media has inspired many to embrace the tradition of setting New Year's resolutions in the first week of January.

While most people are setting goals to lose weight, quit social media, refrain from drinking alcohol and sleep on time, some have decided to set easy beauty resolutions to achieve beautiful and clear skin in 2023.

If you, too, wish to inculcate good habits to deal with acne, clogging of pores and also restore the pH level of your skin, take note of the following!

To maintain your youthful glow and clear skin, you must ensure that you remove makeup as soon as you get home. Avoid sleeping with your makeup on at all costs as it can clog your pores and cause breakouts. Double cleanse is the best way to remove all the dirt, makeup and sweat from your skin.

It's not important to have a 10-step skincare routine to pamper your skin. A CTM - cleansing, toning and moisturising - routine can work wonders for your skin. Make a resolution to never miss a CTM routine before going to bed.

Dirty pillow covers can give you a bad breakout. So, make sure that you change your pillow covers every two weeks.

According to research findings published in the British Medical Journal, we must not compromise on our beauty sleep. Seven to eight hours are enough to give our skin the rest it requires.

Lastly, use sunscreen everyday to avoid premature ageing and sun damage.

Fogg, who ran the Behavior Design Lab at Stanford University, advised people to pick something extremely specific rather than an abstract goal and then make it as easy as possible for themselves. In short, pick habits that you actually want to inculcate in your everyday routine, instead of picking habits that you feel SHOULD be a part of your everyday routine.

An abstract idea would be - to exercise every day - and a specific one would be - to do yoga for an hour thrice a week. Now, a way to not mess up with your resolution would be to set daily reminders and alerts.

Other than setting more specific goals, you must also make them measurable and set deadlines for the same. You can also join forces with a family member, a friend, or a colleague and work together to meet your New Year's resolutions as "accountability buddies".

Set a penalty clause

Several studies suggest that penalties are much more motivating than rewards. While we are used to getting penalised for our missteps by others, fining ourselves for our misbehaviour might feel alien to us at first, but with time, it becomes second nature to us.

Now, you must be thinking how does a penalty clause work? All you need to do is ensure that you face some penalty for not achieving your New Year's resolution. From donating a fixed amount to charity every time you skip a workout session to taking away an hour from your relaxing time for going to bed late, the penalty can be anything.

A fun fact - several websites like StickK and Beeminder let you put money on the line that you will have to forfeit to an NGO or a charity if you don’t achieve a stated goal. All you have to do is appoint a referee and set the stakes.

Opt for a cue-based plan

A great way to stick to your resolution is to use cues to help you remember when and where to act. A cue-based plan or strategy to achieve your goals can be a game-changer for many and several studies have backed this claim.

Deciding when and where you will execute your resolution jogs your memory when it’s opportune and it also generates guilt if you flake out. This also helps you anticipate and dodge obstacles when it's time to achieve those goals.

A quick example of this would be: meditate for 20 minutes before going to bed and after waking up. A vague resolution would be : meditate every day. Here the cue is the action of going to bed and waking up.

After a heavy night of binge-drinking on some alcohol, you do develop a hangover and so does your skin. Hungover skin looks dry, dehydrated, pale and sallow.

Let's see how alcohol consumption and lack of sleep affect our skin

Alcohol is a diuretic, so it dehydrates your skin making it dull and pale. Sugar in certain alcoholic drinks enables a process called glycation which leads to the breakdown of collagen and elastin fibres. Sugar can also cause a spike in androgen hormones and sebum secretion resulting in pimples.

Alcohol also results in inflammation of the skin and aggravates conditions like rosacea, psoriasis or even acne. As a pro-inflammatory, alcohol contributes to puffiness, redness and flushing. Alcohol also results in the accumulation of free radicals in the skin which make the skin look dull and dehydrated.

Lack of sleep results in stress which can increase the cortisol hormones which intern results in dark circles. It also causes the breakdown of collagen fibres leading to fine lines and dilated pores. Melatonin, also known as the sleep hormone is released while you are sleeping and it helps in skin repair. Lack of sleep will also deprive the skin of its normal repair mechanism.

Remedies:

First of all, hydrate your body by drinking 3 to 4 litres of water. Supplements of vitamin C or citrus fruits, pure lemon shots and antioxidant supplements such as glutathione help to neutralise the free radicals that accumulated due to the consumption of alcohol. Use hyaluronic acid serums to hydrate the skin.

Use Ceramide-based moisturisers to repair the barrier layer of the skin. Medicated creams such as oxymetazoline, tacrolimus or pimecrolimus are prescribed when there is excessive redness. Use a salicylic acid or azelaic acid-based serum if you have breakouts. Take probiotics to cleanse your gut.

Cosmetic procedures which are going to gain popularity in 2023

In terms of skincare, people are going to be ingredient-conscious and minimum makeup will be the trend. Hence the need to have clear, even-toned skin with smaller pores and no fine lines and no blemishes is what people will look out for.

Treatments in terms of micro needling radio frequency, platelet-rich plasma, laser toning, derma pen, and oxygeneo facials will be sought after procedures to get the above minimum makeup or no makeup look.

In terms of beauty treatments, younger females up to the age of 30 are opting for fillers and the eye to treat hollow under eyes and look fresh.

Non-surgical nose jobs with fillers and fillers injected into the lips to volumize the lips will also be popular. Botox injection to obtain a smooth Oval facial contour will also be sought after.

Younger men up to the age of 30, are opting for a more defined chin and jawline with the help of fillers.

Skin booster injections such as profhilo, volite will be popular amongst all genders and age groups from 25 to 55 as preventative measures, so that the process of collagen breakdown, wrinkles and sagging is delayed. Besides, skin boosters also keep the skin well-hydrated, radiant and supple.

Muscle firming with TESLA Former which uses Functional Magnetic Stimulation (FMS), will be the next big thing. It is a non-invasive body toning, muscle-building treatment for the butt, arms and thighs, and of course the abdomen.
