You probably already know how important it is to keep blood sugar levels within the recommended range if you or a loved one has diabetes. Major, long-term health issues like vision loss, heart disease, and renal disease can be avoided or delayed with proper management of blood sugar, HbA1c, cholesterol levels, and blood pressure.

Diabetes can have a serious negative impact on the eyes, which can result in blindness or visual impairment. This is due to the fact that high blood sugar can destroy the capillaries in the eye's most delicate tissues, which transmit signals to the brain and enable clear vision. A permanent loss of vision may result from this retinal damage brought on by high blood pressure.

However, there is hope. One can avoid major eye damage by monitoring and regulating blood sugar levels as per their doctor's recommendation.

The following five actions can help safeguard vision during diabetes.

Understand Numbers

When blood sugar levels rise, the delicate blood vessels that nourish the most delicate areas of the eyes are often the first to sustain damage. High blood sugar specifically harms the retina. The thin tissue that makes up around 65 per cent of the back of the eye is called the retina. Many light-sensitive cells reside there, allowing the eyes to communicate visual information to the brain via the optic nerve.

The blood vessels that supply the retina are harmed when blood sugar levels rise. Vision blurring may result from this, either temporarily or permanently. Diabetic retinopathy, glaucoma, and cataracts are three distinct eye conditions that are quite common in people with diabetes. Timely detection and interventions can minimize such complications. By keeping track of blood sugar levels one can reduce the risk of these sight-stealing conditions.

Stop Smoking

Every physiological system is harmed by smoking, but diabetics are particularly vulnerable. Smoking harms the veins, arteries, and capillaries in the body, aggravating diabetes-related eye damage already present. Whether you're a smoker and have tried to quit or want to quit for the first time, don't give up. Talk to your doctor about your options.

Moving It

Exercise benefits all physical systems in the same way that smoking does, so get moving! After lunch, go for a couple of laps around the block. Take a few extra steps and park at the far end of the parking lot. Regular exercise can reduce your risk of developing diabetic eye disease since it lowers blood sugar levels. Put it on your calendar each week to remind you to make time for this appointment with yourself that will improve your life. Before beginning any workout regimen, discuss it with your doctor to find out the exercises they advise.

Focus on Eating Healthily

You are what you eat, we've all been told since we were young. Healthy eating leads to healthy eyes. Eat a diet that is well-balanced and contains meals that provide your body with good nutrients to safeguard diabetic eyes. Vitamins A, C, E, beta-carotene, lutein, omega-3 fatty acids, zinc, and zeaxanthin are some of them. Consuming a diet high in leafy greens, fatty fish like salmon, tuna, or mackerel, nuts like walnuts and almonds, beans, lentils, and mushrooms will help you reach this goal. Maintaining a low glycemic diet is important to manage blood sugar levels.

Yearly Dilated Eye Examination

The finest tip is reserved for last: get a full dilated eye exam from your ophthalmologist once a year, or more frequently if advised, to make sure that your efforts to control blood sugar are aiding in maintaining the health of your eyesight. Screening for cataracts, glaucoma, and diabetic retinopathy may be performed at this visit. Your pupils enlarge as your eyes dilate, allowing your ophthalmologist to inspect the retina, macula, and optic nerve up close. Your doctor can identify diabetic retinopathy in its early stages long before you have any symptoms by looking at these sensitive tissues.

Australia's former Deputy PM Michael McCormack was taken to hospital after he drank or rather gulped an entire bowl of Kava, during a diplomatic tour of Micronesia.

McCormack was part of a bipartisan Australian parliamentary delegation that was touring the Pacific region and they were visiting Pohnpei in the Federated States of Micronesia to commemorate the 35th anniversary of bilateral relations, where they were treated to a medley of traditional dances and traditional drinks like Sakau, a form of Kava.

He claimed he went 'çross-eyed' and slept for 14 hours thereafter, according to a report in the Guardian. His ignorance of the local drink that was served to him, made him down an entire shell of Sakau, a traditional Micronesian Kava with sedative qualities made from the root of the pepper plant. Coquette Makeup View this post on Instagram A post shared by Sveta Hill 🌙 Макияж И Я (@lanahillmua) Coquette makeup trend is all about embracing hyper-feminity by incorporating delicate pastels, Lana Del Rey eyeliner and soft pink blushed cheeks into your beauty routine. The trend is focused on ultra-feminine styles and colours that awaken the inner divine feminine in you. It involves using rosy and peachy hues for eyes, lips and cheeks as well as big lashes that give the pretty-in-pink look a more mature edge. It matches perfectly with dewy skin and gives a lit-from-within glow. Stars like Ariana Grande, Taylor Swift and Selena Gomez have been spotted sporting this trend. Also read: Four secrets to longevity from the centenarians of Okinawa, the land of immortals Washed Denim Eyes View this post on Instagram A post shared by Sabina Ioana (@sabinaioana___) The hottest winter makeup trend this year was Washed Denim Eyes, which impressed Dua Lipa and many alike. Influenced by the Denim Revolution we saw in fashion this year, Washed Denim Eyes trend made appearances on red carpets, runways, shoots and premieres. It involves sweeping blue eyeshadow shades across the eyes for an impactful yet neutral look. It should be blended slightly past the crease and along the lower lash line and very little outside these areas. They match best with a denim-on-denim look. Vanilla Girl Aesthetic View this post on Instagram A post shared by Adhara Sophie☀️⭐️⚡️ (@adharasophie) Vanilla Girl Aesthetic, which is currently sweeping social media with clips bearing the hashtag racking up over 100 million views, is inspired by the sweet, homely and comforting taste and scent of vanilla. The trend is all about using light, cream-like hues for not just makeup, but also clothes and home decor. A Vanilla girl opts for a makeup look that is understated and includes things like gold shimmers, soft caramel eyeshadow shades, brown eyeliner and vanilla-scented lip balms. She must also be a fan of dewy skin and use hydrating skincare products. The vanilla makeup look also leans towards bronzer rather than blusher to achieve that 'golden hour' glow. Siren Eyes View this post on Instagram A post shared by Mihai Miron (@mihaimironmakeup) Seeing so many TikTokers and celebrities mastering the siren gaze and bringing their mysterious sides out, aren't you curious to try it out? I know, most answers will be yes! For this makeup trend, you have to ace a smoked-out, sultry and elongated eyeliner look that will instantly turn you into a mythical mermaid-like creature. Gigi Hadid, Bella Hadid, Alexa Demie, Rihanna, and Megan Fox love this trend and have been its flagbearers this year. Also read: Yearender 2022: Looking back at this year's worst-dressed celebrity moments Graphic eyeliner View this post on Instagram A post shared by queen of chaos 🥦 (@naomijon) There're so many ways of rocking a Graphic Eyeliner that we just cannot get enough of it. I'm Cold fiz aquela trend do “I’m cold makeup” porém numa cidade que faz 30 graus todo dia, amaram? pic.twitter.com/GoaNUJOWGO — 𝖙𝖍𝖆𝖎𝖎𝖘 (@thaiismusic) November 19, 2022 Created by social media influencer Zoe Kim Kenealy, I'm Cold makeup trend is all about using different products to mimic how you might look after spending a ton of time outside in the cold, chilly winter. The process involves using pinks, reds and peaches to fake flushed cheeks, windburnt skin, red nose and a natural glow. According to makeup artists, you must place your blush lower on your cheekbones to create a fuller, flushed look, which is synonymous with the 'I'm cold' effect. And, you must also ensure that you apply a shade that naturally compliments your skin and doesn't look unflattering. Justin Bieber's wife and supermodel Hailey Bieber is in love with this trend. Skin Flooding TikTokers found a way to cure dehydrated winter skin this year. They invented the Skin Flooding hack that helped millions to fix their ultra-dry winter skin. The beauty trend involves bombarding your freshly washed skin with intense moisture by layering different skincare products on your face. This layering method helps with maximum product absorption and increases penetrative efficiency. The process of Skin Flooding starts by patting your skin with some water after using a hydrating cleanser. Next, we have to use a hydrating mist to lock in the moisture.
Beauty fads such as Bird Poop facial, Bee Venom-infused skincare, Snail Mucus masks and the latest - Menstrual Masking show us how far one is willing to go in the name of good skincare. If you ever thought that you have seen enough and viral skincare trends cannot get any weirder, pause and think again. Because TikTokers will find a way to make your jaw drop with their so-called "advice" or "skincare secret".

Currently, period-blood face masks are gaining traction online and believe me or not, people are actually claiming that it has beauty benefits. But, wait, we all know that we cannot believe everything we see online, right? We should take every advice on social media with a pinch of salt because the virtual space is full of gimmicks and useless hacks.

So, let's break down this trend and understand why we should or shouldn't hop on the bandwagon and try menstrual masking.

What is Menstrual Masking?

The term 'Menstrual Masking', also known as period-blood facial and moon masking, was first used on social media in 2019. But, it turned into a trend only in 2022. And, as the name suggests, it involves using menstrual blood during facials or as a mask with the aim of improving skin texture and quality.

Many of those who have tried menstrual masking have done so because they believe that the micronutrients found in the period blood can benefit the skin. Most claims are pretty vague, with users saying that their skin feels and looks "better" post-treatment. Others have hopped the trend train to feel more connected with their body. But does it actually work or is it another gimmick to get those views and comments? Let's find out!

Does it actually work? Is it safe?

So, before we buy a facial kit, mask or any other skincare product, we check its ingredient list. So, let's first understand what exactly period blood is made up of. According to doctors, menstrual blood consists of the uterus lining, white blood cells, fibrants and proteins among other biological components such as mucus and clots. And, experts say that some of these can cause inflammation and infection on your skin.

Even though some say that menstrual blood has micronutrients like zinc, copper, magnesium, and iron, you must remember that the quantity of these substances is relatively low. And, even if there were high levels of micronutrients available in period blood, we couldn't benefit from them as there is no way they can make their way into the skin without any penetration enhancer. Most importantly, we cannot ignore the possibility of infection and cross-contamination and it is not worth the risk.

Also, remember that it is nothing like the blood used in PRP aka vampire facials, where beneficial elements from one's blood are isolated and used to attain glowing skin. Also, PRP, a medically-backed procedure, is conducted in a sterile way, whereas menstrual masking isn't.

Alternatives that actually work

Kim Kardashian-approved PRP facial aka Vampire facial is a great alternative for menstrual masking. However, you will have to visit an aesthetic clinic for the treatment. And, results are usually visible after a few sittings. You can also go for hydra facials for an instant glow.

If you are looking for an at-home treatment, try out avocado and honey mask or Ayurveda ubtan.

IBTIDA - Ek Mehfil to bring the magic of JHOOM for Sufi music lovers in India

Celine Dion dropped a shocker on Thursday morning and left her fans stressed and emotional. The iconic singer, who crooned hit tracks like 'My Heart Will Go On', 'The Power Of Love' and 'I'm Alive', revealed in an emotional video that she's been diagnosed with Stiff-person Syndrome, due to which she has cancelled and rescheduled some of her upcoming concert dates.

"I’ve been dealing with problems with my health for a long time, and it’s been really difficult for me to face these challenges and to talk about everything that I’ve been going through…It hurts me to tell you that I won’t be ready to restart my tour in Europe in February," the teary-eyed singer shared.

Like many of her fans, you might also not be aware of the rare and incurable neurological disease Celine spoke about. Here's a quick health guide to help you understand the condition better!

What exactly is Stiff-person Syndrome?

Stiff-person Syndrome, also known as SPS and Moersch-Woltman syndrome, is a rare autoimmune movement disorder, which usually occurs in about one in every one million people, and it affects their central nervous system. It is mainly diagnosed among middle-aged people like the 54-year-old singer.

The condition causes chronic pain and spasms, usually triggered by noise, emotional distress and light physical touch. The person dealing with this disorder also experiences stiffening of the muscles near the trunk and abdomen area, followed by the development of rigidity and stiffness around the legs and other muscles of the body.

Over time, the condition leads to an altered posture, and in severe cases, it can even limit your ability to walk or move. People suffering from this rare disorder need ongoing treatment to manage symptoms and maintain quality of life.

Stiff person syndrome is thought to be part of a wide range of similar diseases that involve one area of the body and then spread throughout the body.

Who is usually prone to Stiff-person Syndrome?

Stiff-person syndrome is, fortunately, an extremely rare condition and only about one out of every one million people have been diagnosed with this syndrome. And, it's twice as common in women than in men. Symptoms of the condition usually start developing around the age of 30 to 60. It is more likely seen in people with certain types of autoimmune disorders, such as diabetes, thyroiditis, vitiligo and pernicious anemia. People dealing with certain cancers, such as breast, lung, kidney, thyroid, colon and Hodgkin’s lymphoma, are also prone to the disease.

What causes the rare autoimmune movement disorder?

Researchers are unclear of the exact cause of this syndrome, however, it is believed that the syndrome is an autoimmune disorder, a condition where the immune system attacks healthy cells over time. People, dealing with this disorder, make antibodies that attack an enzyme called glutamic acid decarboxylase (GAD), which plays a pivotal role in making a neurotransmitter called gamma-aminobutyric acid (GABA). GABA helps control muscle movement.

Meanwhile, antibodies to another protein called amphiphysin are a less common finding in people suffering from this syndrome. This protein is involved in helping nerve cells communicate with each other and is found in nerve terminals.

But, do remember that the exact role that GAD plays in the development or worsening of this syndrome is not totally understood by experts and scientists. In fact, there have been cases where people with this syndrome do not have detectable antibodies to GAD.

Learn ways to prevent heart attack

Symptoms of Stiff-person Syndrome

Muscle stiffness near trunk and abdomen area

Intense pain

Discomfort

Hunched posture

Painful muscle spasms

Uncomfortable sleep

Symptoms for this disorder can take several months or years to develop. While some patients remain stable over the years, others' conditions worsen with time.

Diagnosis available for the condition

If you are experiencing one or more of the symptoms mentioned above, you must consult your healthcare provider. After a quick consultation, they will advise you to take a couple of tests. Here's a list!

Electromyography (EMG) - An EMG machine will be used to measure electrical activity in your muscles to detect continuous motor activity.

Blood test - A blood test will be done to check whether your body has antibodies to GAD or amphiphysin. It will also help detect signs that might indicate or rule out other diseases. About 60 and 80 per cent of people with stiff person syndrome have antibodies against GAD.

Lumbar puncture - For a lumbar puncture, a doctor uses a needle to draw fluid out of your spinal canal and checks for the presence of antibodies to GAD or for other signs.

Also read: Can Mewing reshape your face and define your jawline? Here's a quick guide Who is usually prone to Stiff-person Syndrome? Also read: Experiencing cardiophobia post seeing viral clips of 'people falling dead'? Learn ways to prevent heart attack Symptoms of Stiff-person Syndrome Muscle stiffness near trunk and abdomen area Intense pain Discomfort Hunched posture Painful muscle spasms Uncomfortable sleep Symptoms for this disorder can take several months or years to develop. While some patients remain stable over the years, others' conditions worsen with time. Diagnosis available for the condition If you are experiencing one or more of the symptoms mentioned above, you must consult your healthcare provider.

Every time we pick up our phones these days and start scrolling through our feeds, we come across viral videos by influencers and creators that claim to know the secret to a sharp jawline. And, the only thing that crosses our mind at the time is - "Is this even real or just a gimmick?"

And, when not one or two but hundreds if not thousands are swearing by a technique or product, we tend to get curious. Mewing is that new beauty craze that has awakened our inner Sherlock. It has taken over TikTok and YouTube. And, it has been approved by several bloggers, celebrities and skin experts as the best jawline enhancer and shaper technique of the 21st century.

But, since we can't believe everything that we see online, it's best to do our own research and get to know the real tea. To make your lives easier, we have done all the legwork. Here's a quick beauty guide that will tell you all about Mewing and whether it actually works or not.

What is Mewing?

Even though the hashtag #mewing has over 2.5 billion views on TikTok alone, many people don't know what it actually means and how it is done. In simple terms, the latest interest fad, Mewing, also known as orthotropic, is the practice of placing your tongue on the roof of your mouth in an effort to make your jawline sharper and reshape your facial features. According to some claims, the technique doesn't just give them tighter, more defined jawlines, but the practice also helps them resolve issues such as sleep apnea, mouth breathing, and even crooked teeth. And, that it goes way beyond aesthetics.

Even though it is going viral on social media in the 21st century, it is a decades-old tongue technique that was originated by British orthodontist Dr John Mew in the 1970s. He believed that children can achieve straighter teeth and better breathing habits by mewing regularly. He also claimed that the technique has several other benefits that haven't been proven yet. However, unfortunately, there have been several controversies surrounding his practices. So, it's best to see how people have benefitted from the technique in the past rather than trusting his many claims.

Does Mewing actually work?

First things first, mewing as it's currently being shown online isn't exactly what John Mew intended. The Mew-ers of the 21st century are using the technique to get an instant double chin removal, sharper jawline and achieve a certain aesthetic. They are not concerned about straighter teeth or better breathing. So, if you are just trying to click a good selfie (without filters) and flaunt a sharper jawline in photos, this technique works quite well.

However, just like filters, the effects of mewing are fleeting. The moment you relax your muscles, the appearance will disappear. As for the long-term effects, it can help people get better oral posture and aid in jaw development, but so can chewing gums and eating tougher goods.

So, in the end, the choice is yours, what are you looking for, what results do you desire and whether you have the patience to see the long-term results.

How do you Mew correctly?

Mewing is quite popular among netizens because it is so simple yet promises big results. If you, too, want to try mewing, follow the steps mentioned below.

1. Relax your mouth and make sure that your lips and teeth are touching

2. Now, keep your lips and teeth together as you lift your tongue. Press it lightly against the roof of your mouth and maintain the position

3. You will feel a little pressure throughout your jaw and that's normal. Just make sure that you are not blocking your airway as you breathe

Alternatives to Mewing

Read the entire guide but are still not convinced enough to try Mewing? Here're some alternatives that are proven effective when done correctly. If you want to tighten the area around your jawline, you can consult your dermatologist and get in-office skin-tightening treatments. You can also try facial yoga or chew gums regularly.

Facial massage techniques can also help people get a sharper jawline. There are also tools like the gua sha and rollers available in the market that help redefine the contours of the face. My favourite jaw shaper is an at-home jaw bra that has worked miraculously for me.
