Speaking virtually at Davos summit, Trump expressed his dissatisfaction with the current state of trade between the US and the EU.

&ldquo;They essentially don&rsquo;t take our farm products and they don&rsquo;t take our cars, yet they send cars to us by the millions. They put tariffs on things that we want to do ... We have some very big complaints with the EU,&rdquo; he added.
The EU had a trade surplus with the US in 2023, according to European Commission data.
Trump's comments came three days after he assumed office in his second term as president. Trade policies under Trump have been a central focus at Davos this year, especially his tariff threats targeting the EU, as well as other countries including China, Mexico, and Canada.
Earlier, on Monday, European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen said at Davos that the bloc is ready to work with Trump, noting that "no other economies in the world are as integrated as" the US and EU.&nbsp;
She also said recently that EU nations could potentially replace Russian liquified natural gas with American gas imports, something President Trump has repeatedly urged.

In December, Trump had warned that unless the EU increased its purchases of American oil and gas, it would face &ldquo;tariffs all the way.&rdquo; On Thursday, he reiterated the same saying, &ldquo;They want to be able to compete better, and you can&rsquo;t compete when you can&rsquo;t go through the approval process faster. There&rsquo;s no reason why it can&rsquo;t go faster ... I&rsquo;m trying to be constructive, because I love <a href="https://www.wionews.com/tags/europe" rel="dofollow">Europe</a>.&rdquo;
<h2>&lsquo;Tariffs if products aren't made in US&rsquo;</h2>
Trump further told economic leaders that they will have to pay tariffs if their products aren't made in the US.
"If you don&rsquo;t make your product in America, which is your prerogative, then very simply, you will have to pay a tariff&mdash;differing amounts, but a tariff," he said.
"Under Trump administration, there will be no better place on earth to create jobs, build factories, or grow a company than right here in the good old USA."
Trump has said earlier that he might impose tariffs of 25% on products from Canada and Mexico and 10% on goods from China.
<h2>US trade deficit and surplus with the EU</h2>
The United States is the largest market for EU exports, with machinery and vehicles accounting for the biggest trade deficit. In 2023, this gap amounted to &euro;102 billion ($106 billion). On the other hand, the US has a surplus in energy trade with the EU, valued at &euro;70 billion, along with a substantial surplus in services.
<h2>&lsquo;NATO members should raise defence spending to 5% of GDP&rsquo;</h2>
Trump further said that he is going to ask NATO members to increase their defence spending. &ldquo;I&rsquo;m also going to ask all NATO nations to increase defence spending to 5% of gross domestic product, which is what it should have been years ago,&rdquo; Trump said, repeating his old remarks. Defence ministers of several major US allies in Europe recently said that a contribution of 5% of GDP per country is unrealistic.

Trump slams ‘unfair’ EU trade policies, vows US will ‘do something about it’

The International Criminal Court&rsquo;s (ICC) chief prosecutor Karim Khan said on Thursday (Jan 23) that he is seeking arrest warrants against the top faces of the Taliban for their rulings against Afghan women, saying it's a crime against humanity.&nbsp;
Khan said that there is strong evidence that the Taliban&rsquo;s supreme leader, Haibatullah Akhundzada, and the chief justice, Abdul Hakim Haqqani, &ldquo;bear criminal responsibility for the crime against humanity of persecution on gender grounds&rdquo;.

Human Rights Watch said that Khan's actions can put the Taliban's crime against women back on the agenda of the international community.
Since it came back to power in August 2021 in Afghanistan, the Taliban posed tough restrictions on Afghan women that the United Nations has called &ldquo;gender apartheid&rdquo;.

&ldquo;I really would like to be able to meet with President Putin soon to get that war ended. And that&rsquo;s not from the standpoint of economy or anything else. It&rsquo;s from the standpoint of millions of lives are being wasted,&rdquo; Trump said.

<h2>'If oil price came down, the Russia-Ukraine war would end immediately'</h2>
President Trump further said in his address that he would ask Saudi Arabia and OPEC to bring down the cost of oil, adding that lower oil prices could end the war in Ukraine immediately.
"I'm also going to ask Saudi Arabia and OPEC to bring down the cost of oil, you've got to bring it down. If the price came down, the Russia-Ukraine war would end immediately," he said.

Trump's comments at the forum come after he spoke with the crown prince in his first call with a foreign leader of his second term.
<h2>'Ukraine is ready to make a deal'</h2>
When asked whether he believed a peace agreement between Russia and Ukraine could be reached by the time he addresses the summit again next year, Trump replied, &ldquo;Well, you&rsquo;re going to have to ask Russia, Ukraine is ready to make a deal.&rdquo;
Responding to a question from the WEF President and CEO, about the relationship between US and China during the next four years, Trump said, "I think that we're going to have a very good relationship. All we want is fairness. We just want a level playing field. Right now it is not a fair relationship, the trade deficit is massive."
Trump spoke positively about Chinese President Xi Jinping, saying, &ldquo;I like President Xi very much, I've always liked him.&rdquo; 
<h2>'China can help stop the war between Russia and Ukraine'</h2>
He also highlighted China&rsquo;s potential role in helping to end the <a href="https://www.wionews.com/tags/ukraine-war" rel="dofollow">Ukraine war</a>, saying, &ldquo;Hopefully China can help us stop the war with, in particular, Russia and Ukraine. They have a great deal of power over that situation. And we&rsquo;ll work with them. And I mentioned that during our phone conversation with President Xi."
"We want to see if we can denuclearise, and I think that is possible," he added.
<h2>Trump threatens tariffs, sanctions on Russia</h2>
A day before his virtual speech, Trump had, in a post on Truth Social,&nbsp;threatened tariffs and intensified sanctions on Russia if it did not withdraw troops from Ukraine.
He said that Russia&rsquo;s economic situation is worsening, urging President Putin to &ldquo;settle now and stop this ridiculous war.&rdquo; Trump added, &ldquo;Without a deal, I have no other choice but to put high levels of taxes, tariffs, and sanctions on anything being sold by Russia to the United States, and various other participating countries.&rdquo;

It did not give details of the source of the funds, which represent more than half of Saudi GDP, or how they are expected to be used.
Prince Mohammed, 39, also passed on congratulations from his father, King Salman, to Trump during the call.
Trump's first visit as president to Saudi Arabia was in 2017, and this week&nbsp;he joked that a major financial commitment could persuade him to do the same again.
"I did it with Saudi Arabia last time because they agreed to buy $450 billion worth of our products," he said.
Trump quipped he would repeat the visit, "if Saudi Arabia wanted to buy another 450 or 500 (billion dollars) -- we'll up it for all the inflation".

"They also discussed the benefits of the US-Saudi economic partnership and the opportunities to grow their economies in a variety of fields, including AI," a spokesperson for Rubio said.&nbsp;
Trump actively courted Saudi Arabia, long an important energy and security partner for Washington, during his first term.
When he arrived in Riyadh in 2017, he was treated to an elaborate welcome involving a sword dance and a fly-past of air force jets.
Relations later cooled, with Prince Mohammed faulting Trump for failing to respond more aggressively after a 2019 attack widely blamed on Iran halved the Gulf kingdom's crude output.

The new fee structure will see foreigners pay $15,000 for climbing the mountain via the south route during the spring season, up from the previous $11,000. The fee adjustments apply to all seasons. The autumn season will now cost $7,500, up from $5,500 and both winter and monsoon seasons will see an increase from $2,750 to $3,750 per climber. However, this change will not affect bookings already made for spring 2025 season. The new rates will officially take effect from September 1, 2025. &ldquo;Bookings already confirmed for the spring 2025 expedition will not be affected by this change,&rdquo; said Indu Ghimire, a joint secretary at the Tourism Ministry. Considering the environmental measures, the Department of Tourism will also enforce stricter controls on what items climbers can bring. Israeli police have launched an investigation into the protest and detained three suspects on charges of &ldquo;disorderly conduct in a public place,&rdquo; as confirmed by authorities.

The demonstration left some residents alarmed. &ldquo;I was afraid they would kill me,&rdquo; one local told the outlet as per Times of Israel.

US President Donald Trump, while appearing for his first full media interview after assuming office, indirectly threatened his predecessor, ex-president Joe Biden. Joe Biden, in one of his last-minute actions before leaving office, pardoned some members of his own family and some of Trump's political enemies. When asked by Hannity what he thought about the pardons, the newly inaugurated US president pointedly said: "And you know what the funny thing...maybe the sad thing is - he didn't give himself a pardon."&nbsp;
"And you look at it, it all had to do with him," Trump added.

"You had [former Trumpe aide Steve] Bannon put in jail, you had [ex-Trump ally] Peter Navarro put in jail, you had people who suffered," he added.&nbsp;
