US President Donald Trump on Monday made good on a promise to slap 25 per cent tariffs on steel and aluminium imports, stepping up a long-promised trade war despite warnings from Europe and China.
The Republican president had unveiled the policy on Sunday aboard Air Force One while flying to the Super Bowl in Louisiana.
Before he signed executive orders imposing the measures, global stock markets rose as traders with "tariff fatigue" appeared to shrug off Trump's plans.
"Today I'm simplifying our tariffs on steel and aluminium," Trump said in the Oval Office. "It's 25 per cent without exceptions or exemptions."
He also signalled that he would look at imposing additional tariffs on automobiles, pharmaceuticals and computer chips.
Canada and Mexico &ndash; which Trump has already threatened with tariffs &ndash; are the biggest steel importers to the United States, according to US trade data. Brazil and South Korea are also major steel providers.
"President Trump has made it clear that an important part of an America First Golden Age is steel production," National Economic Council Director Kevin Hassett told CNBC.
The US leader said he was considering an exemption for Australia from the steel tariffs, confirming comments made by Australian Prime Minister Anthony Albanese.
"We have a (trade) surplus to Australia, one of the few. And the reason is they buy a lot of airplanes. They are rather far away and need lots of airplanes," he said.
Trump has also promised an announcement on Tuesday or Wednesday on broader "reciprocal tariffs" to match the levies other governments charge on US products.

At least one person was killed as two private jets collided in yet another incident in the US on Monday (Feb 10). The latest in a string of aircraft collisions happened at the Scottsdale Airport in Arizona around 2:30 pm local time (9:30 PM GMT) when a business jet smashed into another plane after landing at the US airport, said authorities.
Reports suggest that one person was trapped inside one of the planes for an extended period of time, and three others have been taken to hospital for treatment.&nbsp;

According to a Federal Aviation Authority (FAA) statement, a business plane - a Learjet 35A veered off the runway crashing into a stationary Gulfstream airplane.
"A Learjet 35A veered off the runway after landing and crashed into a Gulfstream 200 business jet on the ramp at Scottsdale Municipal Airport in Arizona around 2:45 p.m. local time Monday, Feb 10," said a FAA spokesperson.

During his 15 months in office Noboa has declared a state of emergency, deployed the army to the streets and gathered extraordinary executive powers to curb cartel violence.
He deployed heavily armed soldiers to polling stations across the country on election day, and the land borders with Colombia and Peru were closed.
Both Noboa and Gonzalez were shadowed at public events by a phalanx of special forces, hoping to avoid a repeat of the 2023 election, when a leading candidate was assassinated.
"We're only human. Of course, you feel afraid," candidate Gonzalez told AFP from her childhood home on the eve of the vote.

Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu has hailed US President Donald Trump's widely criticised plan to move Palestinians out of the war-battered Gaza Strip, saying Israel is willing to "do the job".
