The US military said on Tuesday (Apr 30) that it had destroyed an uncrewed surface vessel (USV) in an area of Yemen controlled by the Houthis.
A day before, Yemeni Houthi rebels launched a drone strike against the Portuguese-flagged container ship, MSC Orion, in the Indian Ocean.
This attack, part of their wider campaign against international shipping, was claimed to be in support of Palestinians during the Israeli military actions in Gaza.
The MSC Orion, owned by Zodiac Maritime and registered in Portugal, was travelling between Sines, Portugal and Salalah, Oman when the incident occurred.
Iran-aligned Houthi militants have launched repeated drone and missile strikes in the Red Sea, Bab al-Mandab Strait and the Gulf of Aden since November, forcing shippers to re-route cargo to longer and more expensive journeys around Southern Africa and stoking fears that the Israel-Hamas war could spread and destabilise the Middle East.
