China locks down ten more Beijing neighbourhoods to contain fresh COVID-19 outbreak

China on Monday locked downten more neighbourhoods in Beijing to try and contain the spread of a new coronavirus outbreak linked to a food market, authorities announced Monday.

City official Li Junjie said at a press conference that fresh cases had been found in a second wholesale market in northwestern Haidian district, and as a result, the market and nearby schools would be closed, and people living in ten communities around it placed under lockdown.

China is facing the second wave of coronavirus cases after the country lifted most of itslockdown and opened its economy in the recent past.

Authorities in Beijing on Saturday temporarily shut a major wholesale agricultural market following a rise in locally transmitted novel coronavirus infections in China's capital city over the past two days.

China on Monday reported 49 new cases while on Sunday 57 new cases of the coronavirus was reported, the highest daily figure since April.
