Butter packets didn't carry 'Contains Milk' warning. So, 36,000 kg of it was recalled

A Costco recall has left people in the United States scratching their heads. The outlet was forced to remove nearly 80,000 pounds of butter from its shelves because the label failed to mention milk as an ingredient.

The FDA stated that Kirkland Signature Butter failed to mention the allergen on its packets and sent out an initial recall for 79,200 pounds of the item.

The salted and unsalted variants of Kirkland Signature Sweet Cream Butter list cream as an ingredient. However, they do not carry an allergy warning that the butter "Contains Milk".The recall includes nearly 1,300 cases of Kirkland Signature Unsalted Sweet Cream Butter and 900 cases of Kirkland Signature Salted Sweet Cream Butter.

Social media users failed to understand the logic behind the recall, with most of them simply stating, "It’s butter".

"Costco forced to recall 80,000 pounds of butter for the dumbest possible reason," one user wrote.

People were left wondering why consumers need to be told by the government that butter contains milk.

"If you need to government to tell you that butter is a dairy product then…well, I can’t help you God I loathe the state," a user wrote on social media.

Another wrote, "To be called ‘Butter’ it must contain milk or milk derivatives. Talk about useless government."

The massive recall of the common kitchen staple includes telling people that they can return the item or safely dispose of it.

One user wrote, "80,000 pounds of Costco butter was just recalled, because the label doesn’t say that it contains milk. It’s butter. News articles are telling people how they can return, or safely dispose of, the butter. It’s butter."

Another user joked how the next recall might be of beef because it "might contain cow".

Lactose-intolerant people can have a bad reaction to milk and milk products, even though butter is low in lactose. As per the CDC recall, milk is one of the foods that "account for most serious allergic reactions in the United States."

As per data, at least two per cent of American children have milk allergies.
