US President Donald Trump on Monday announced a $1 million reward for information about voter fraud, making another attempt to cast doubt on the electoral process ahead of the US midterm elections and promote his false claim that he won the 2020 presidential election. Trump has also linked compensation for veterans who became ill after exposure to contaminated water at a North Carolina military base to a Republican election victory.
Justice Department sues over Alaska Senate election
Meanwhile, the Justice Department has filed a lawsuit seeking to prevent Alaska from certifying its Senate election results if Republican incumbent Dan Sullivan loses. The department cited the possibility of voter confusion involving another candidate with the same name. Trump acknowledged that he personally ordered the lawsuit, although his attorney general denied that the administration was seeking to overturn the election result.

US Midterms 2026: Last leg polls and forecasts indicate Democratic momentum, but Senate control remains uncertain

President Donald Trump’s personal oil and gas holdings have risen significantly since the end of 2025, reaching an estimated value of between $22.5 million and $81.6 million, compared with between $12.6 million and $46 million at the end of last year, according to a new report from Democrats on the Congressional Joint Economic Committee. According to the Democratic minority, the stocks held by Trump have increased in value by an average of 43% since the end of 2025. The findings are based on data from LSEG Data Analytics. The report also found that Trump purchased between $4.7 million and $17.5 million in oil and gas stocks between March, after the war started, and the end of August, the latest period for which data was available. The government of Cameroon has launched 20 migration clubs in secondary schools across Maroua, Far North Region, creating new spaces where young people can access reliable information on migration to make safe and informed decisions. Led by the Ministry of External Relations (MINREX) and the Ministry of Youth Affairs and Civic Education (MINJEC), with technical support from the International Organization for Migration (IOM), the initiative places young people at the centre of efforts to promote informed migration decision-making through peer-to-peer engagement. The launch responds to a growing need for credible information on migration among young people. For many, migration represents an opportunity to pursue education, employment and a better future. Yet decisions are often shaped by information circulating on social media and through informal networks, which may not always reflect the realities, opportunities and challenges associated with migration. “By investing in young people’s knowledge and leadership, we are helping them become informed agents of change within their communities,” said Dr. Nyonka’a, representative of the Ministry of External Relations. “The Migration Clubs provide a sustainable platform for young people to access reliable information, counter misinformation and make well-informed decisions about their future mobility choices.” Cameroon’s youth are at the heart of the country’s migration dynamics. Young people aged 18 to 35 account for an estimated 57 per cent of the national labour force, yet many continue to face significant barriers to decent employment and economic opportunities. Against this backdrop, migration is often viewed as a pathway to better livelihoods, education and future prospects. For many young people, information about migration is increasingly accessed through social media, online platforms, peer networks and community narratives rather than official sources. While these channels can broaden access to information, they can also facilitate the rapid spread of misinformation and disinformation that may present incomplete or misleading accounts of migration experiences and opportunities abroad. Ensuring that young people have access to accurate, balanced and evidence-based information is therefore critical to supporting informed decision-making and enabling them to assess both the opportunities and challenges associated with migration before making migration choices. To address persistent information gaps, the government of Cameroon and IOM have invested in youth-led approaches that empower young people to inform and support one another. In August 2026, 20 young leaders in Maroua were trained under the MIGRATalkers initiative, a network of youth ambassadors that promotes informed, safe and responsible migration through community outreach and peer dialogue. The youth ambassadors subsequently engaged more than 460 young people through awareness-raising activities, laying the groundwork for the establishment of the school-based migration clubs. Through interactive discussions and testimonies, students explored migration realities, regular migration pathways, the risks associated with irregular migration and the importance of seeking reliable information before making migration-related decisions. “The awareness sessions helped me better understand that migration is a complex reality with both opportunities and challenges,” said the President of the Migration Club at Harde Government Secondary School in Maroua. “As president of the club, I am proud to help create a space where students can ask questions, access reliable information and discuss migration openly. I look forward to sharing what we have learned with our peers so they can make informed decisions about their future.” The Migration Clubs complement broader efforts to expand the MIGRATalkers network across Cameroon and strengthen youth participation in migration governance. By equipping young people with knowledge, critical thinking skills and trusted information, the initiative contributes to more informed mobility decisions and more resilient communities. The initiative is implemented under the “Strengthening Migration Governance in Cameroon: Comprehensive Support to National Policy Development and Return, Readmission and Reintegration (RRR)” project, supported by the European Union. Through the project, IOM supports the Government of Cameroon in strengthening migration governance and promoting safe, orderly and regular migration, while expanding access to reliable migration information for young people across the country.

Zimbabwe has dropped four places to 14th in the latest assessment of Digital Rights and Inclusion in Africa. The ranking comes from the 2025 Digital Rights and Inclusion in Africa Report, known as Londa, the most comprehensive continental assessment to date, covering 29 African countries across Central, East, North, South and West Africa. Compiled by Paradigm Initiative, a leading pan-African organisation advocating for digital rights and inclusion, the report evaluates each country using The score index, a 12-point indicator that measures access to information, freedom of expression, privacy protections and digital inclusion, among other factors. The index points to areas for improvement and to persistent structural challenges across the continent. According to the report, Zimbabwe recorded no internet shutdown in 2025. However, journalists and human rights defenders continued to face arbitrary arrests, and freedom of expression remained curtailed by sedition legislation and the criminalisation of false news. The report also covers Technology-Facilitated Gender-Based Violence (TFGBV), which limits opportunities for free expression online and runs counter to Resolution 522 of the African Commission on Human and Peoples’ Rights (ACHPR). It notes that Zimbabwe faces policy and implementation gaps: it has not adopted legislation on emerging technologies and digital Identity Cards (IDs), nor has it revised its traditional gender-based violence policies to address online gender-based violence. In addition, the report examines internet accessibility in Zimbabwe and assesses the regulatory landscape, outlining existing legislation on internet access, data protection, freedom of expression, access to information, privacy and digital inclusion. Londa offers a comprehensive, data-driven assessment of internet freedoms, policy environments and emerging digital rights risks across the continent. It serves as an annual benchmark of progress and setbacks in digital rights protection, drawing on extensive country-level research and stakeholder engagement. The Zimbabwe country report also sets out recommendations to safeguard human rights by aligning policies and practices with the ACHPR’s declaration on freedom of expression and access to information. It urges the government to amend Gender-Based Violence-related laws, such as the Domestic Violence Act, to recognise, prevent and combat Tech-Facilitated GBV in line with Resolution 522. The resolution calls on states to review or adopt legislation aimed at combating all forms of digital violence and to expand the definition of gender-based violence to include digital violence against women, including cyber-harassment and cyberstalking, among other ICT-related violations. The report further calls on the government to hold public consultations and conduct human rights impact assessments before implementing surveillance initiatives, and encourages civil society to pursue litigation over violations arising from surveillance and arbitrary arrests. It also recommends updating the Children’s Amendment Act 8 of 2023 to provide child-friendly reporting channels and provisions for the removal of harmful content. For the private sector, the report recommends publishing transparent reports on the use of surveillance technologies, in line with global transparency standards, to ensure accountability.

In November 2024, students hit the streets in Serbia, against the government, following a railway station accident that killed 16 people. In a seismic shift two years later, the student-led movement managed to end Alexander Vucic's 14-year rule in Serbia. Take a look at these visuals, of celebrations at capital Belgrade's Slavija Square. Thousands of people hit the streets to celebrate the defeat of Vucic's Serbian Progressive Party, whom they blamed for deep-rooted corruption.Belgrade witnessed flares, fireworks and dances, as youngsters cheered and waved the Serbian flag. Supporters of the students' list honked horn and chanted slogans like 'Alexander is gone'. In some places, people turned violent. For instance, angry protesters attacked multiple police convoys outside the building of Serbia's presidency. Tents used by Vucic supporters were also set on fire. Scenes of jubilation were seen at the headquarters of the students' list as well, where supporters danced and hugged each other, to celebrate their victory.A day earlier, unusually long lines were seen at polling stations in cities and towns across Serbia. With a turnout of close to 70%, the country recorded its highest parliamentary election turnout since 1993. According to the country's poll body, students' list has garnered over 52% of the votes. Conceding defeat in the polls, Vucic hinted that student movement could win 135 to 140 seats, handing it an outright majority in the 250-seat parliament. While urging his supporters to keep calm, the former Serbian president blamed foreign powers for his loss. After the defeat of its ally Vucic, Russia said that it wanted to keep developing ties with Serbia, but stressed that it takes two to tango. For nearly two years, students have staged rallies across Serbia, accusing the government of widespread corruption and negligence. Their final election rally in Belgrade was attended by nearly one hundred fifty thousand people. Now, what stands out is that this movement has no obvious leader, and fielded candidates from a wider pool of professionals, including academics and doctors. Some of their key promises include freeing the media and courts from political influence, ensuring transparency in public procurement, depoliticisation of public sector and, affordable housing for young families. Now, this election could also offer a blueprint for other protesters, across Europe, who have taken to the streets in recent weeks, against poor education conditions, lack of future prospects and rising cost of living. Over the weekend, one hundred ten thousand people marched on the streets of Paris, and denounced rising living costs and, growing inequality. While the march was largely peaceful, riot police clashed with protesters towards the end. Smoke drifted through the streets, as police fired tear gas, and protesters launched projectiles. Over 1,300 people were arrested in connection with the violence.Violence broke out in neighbouring Italy too, with several people getting injured, in the city of Bologna. Protesters hurled bottles, stones and firecrackers at security forces, who then use tear gas and water cannons. This is not all. 100 people were arrested in Barcelona, after hooded demonstrators who participated in an anti-government rally looted shops, and set fire to street furniture. With polls scheduled in many European countries including France, Italy, and Spain over the next year, it remains to be seen whether, the ongoing protests can make an electoral impact.

Anthropic, the company behind the Claude AI models, is heading towards a potential blockbuster stock market debut with a financial story that captures both the promise and the risks of the artificial intelligence boom. Its reported second-quarter operating income reached $974 million, reversing a $1.7 billion operating loss three months earlier. Yet its IPO filing also puts its net loss for the first half of 2026 at a staggering $80.7 billion. The contrast highlights a central question for investors: Can AI companies turn rapidly growing demand into lasting profits while paying for the enormous computing infrastructure their products require?
Anthropic’s revenue jumps as computing costs grow more slowly
Anthropic reported revenue of $11.6 billion in the second quarter of 2026, up from $4.7 billion in the first quarter. Over the same period, the cost of computing power rose from $3.4 billion to $5.6 billion. That gap helped push operating income into positive territory. Operating income measures what remains after a business pays its operating costs, before certain other expenses and accounting items. The company’s computing costs consumed $2.51 for every dollar of revenue in early 2025, according to the figures provided. By the second quarter of 2026, that had fallen to 48 cents. One reason is that Anthropic books computing capacity 12 to 18 months in advance. When revenue rises faster than those previously arranged costs, more of each additional dollar can flow towards operating income. However, operating profit is not the same as net profit. The reported first-half net loss remains a major figure investors will need to understand, including the accounting factors behind the difference.
$395 billion in cloud commitments raise the stakes
Anthropic’s plans involve enormous spending commitments to secure the computing power needed to develop and run its AI models. According to the supplied filing details, the company plans to spend at least $110 billion with Amazon through April 2036, $120 billion with SpaceX through 2029, $115 billion with Google through 2033 and $45 billion with Microsoft through 2033. These commitments total $390 billion, not including any additional costs or changes to the agreements. They underline how much infrastructure the company expects to need as its business expands. Anthropic said its cash and current sales should cover the next 12 months, but warned it could need additional financing sooner than expected if revenue growth or infrastructure costs develop differently.
What Anthropic’s IPO means for AI investors
The company has reportedly raised around $141 billion in capital and held $112.4 billion in cash at the end of June. It plans to list on Nasdaq under the ticker symbol ANT, with Goldman Sachs and Morgan Stanley leading the offering, according to the supplied information. The filing does not yet set out a final share price or the number of shares to be offered. Those details would be determined later in the IPO process. For investors, Anthropic presents a high-stakes test of the AI business model: explosive revenue growth and improving operating economics on one side, and extraordinary infrastructure commitments and substantial reported losses on the other. The key question is not simply whether Anthropic can grow. It is whether that growth can deliver sustainable profits after the full cost of building AI is counted.

Anthropic’s reported second-quarter operating income reached $974 million as revenue climbed to $11.6 billion. But its $80.7 billion first-half net loss and huge cloud commitments raise questions about the cost and sustainability of AI growth ahead of its planned IPO.

His record on reducing hunger and unemployment in Brazil gave him a good position from which he could pitch to voters. His campaign mobilised massive numbers of supporters after he lost round one. Lula was a man who hadn't taken to the digital world, yet he flashed a smartphone at his rallies and used social media to reach out to Gen Z voters. But apart from this, Lula turned American pressure into a defence of Brazilian sovereignty. His supporters attribute his win to his past policies, stance against President Donald Trump, and his team's efforts to reach out to the last voter in line. For Latin America, Lula’s victory reinstates the left wing's position in Brazil and disrupts Trump's plan of implementing the Monroe Doctrine. International endorsements and economic pressure cannot simply substitute for domestic voter support. In fact, on the contrary, support from outside the country can backfire, as has been the case for Flavio Bolsonaro. Once again, a lesson in international politics. For now, the real test is whether President Lula can turn this dramatic comeback into results for the millions of Brazilians who voted for him and reinstated their faith in him for a fourth time.

OpenAI's Codex security researchers uncovered Node2Shell (CVE-2026-111497), a critical flaw in the Brotli compression code used by Node.js and others that can let crafted compressed data take over a server. Patches are out, and AI labs are now major bug-hunters in core software.

For anyone running Node.js, Bun, or the affected networking components, the advice is direct: update to the patched versions now.

Security researchers at OpenAI have uncovered a critical vulnerability deep in the plumbing of the modern internet: a flaw in the Brotli data-compression code used by Node.js, the software that runs a huge share of the web's servers. Nicknamed Node2Shell, it can let an attacker take control of a server simply by sending it specially crafted compressed data. Patches are out, and the deeper story is that the AI labs are now among the most active bug-hunters in critical software.

OpenAI's security team found a critical flaw in Node.js! Compressed data can seize the server

Usually when a critical security flaw is found in software from a company the size of Amazon, the story ends with a patch. This one does not. Amazon Web Services has confirmed a severe vulnerability and said, in effect, that it will never be fixed. The Flaw The vulnerability, logged as CVE-2026-115812, is in AWS Multi Model Server, a tool for hosting and serving trained machine-learning models. In an official security bulletin published on 23 October, AWS described it as a path-traversal flaw in the way the server unpacks model archive files: a maliciously crafted archive can write files outside the folder it is supposed to stay in, which can lead to an attacker running code with the server's privileges. By the common severity scale it scores 9.8 out of 10 — about as high as these ratings go. Making matters worse, the tool's management interface requires no authentication, so any deployment that exposes it on a reachable network address is especially vulnerable. The Part That Is Unusual The response is what makes this notable. AWS states that Multi Model Server is end of life, that every released version — 1.1.11 and earlier — is affected, and that no fixed version is available or planned on any distribution channel. The project's source code has been archived and read-only since late 2025. There is, in other words, no patch, and there never will be one. AWS's recommendation is simply to migrate to a supported model-serving solution. Why It Matters This is a hole in the plumbing of AI deployment, not in a flashy consumer product. Multi Model Server is the kind of behind-the-scenes tool that organisations quietly stand up to serve AI models and then forget about. Abandoned software like that is exactly where serious vulnerabilities fester: it is still running in production somewhere, no longer being watched, and now carries a publicly documented, unpatchable, top-severity flaw. A documented weakness with no fix is an open invitation to anyone who finds an exposed instance. The Fair Context In fairness to AWS, there are reasonable points on its side. End-of-life software cannot be supported forever, the company did disclose the flaw clearly rather than quietly, and there is a legitimate supported path: stop using the tool. Security researchers report no known exploitation of this flaw so far, and the risk is concentrated in deployments that expose the unauthenticated management interface to a network — a configuration that careful operators avoid anyway. The counterweight is that 'just migrate' is easy to say and hard to do; abandoned infrastructure tends to keep running precisely because nobody is paying attention to it, and a 9.8-rated flaw with no patch and no login on its control panel is a combination that will catch someone out. What To Watch Whether organisations actually hunt down and retire their Multi Model Server deployments, or leave them running unnoticed. Whether attackers begin scanning the internet for exposed, unauthenticated instances. And whether the broader rush to deploy AI is leaving behind a trail of abandoned, unmaintained tools that become tomorrow's security incidents. The practical advice from AWS is unambiguous: if you are still running Multi Model Server, move off it, and in the meantime keep its management interface off any reachable network.

AWS confirmed CVE-2026-115812, a critical 9.8-rated path-traversal flaw in its end-of-life Multi Model Server whose management interface needs no password, and said no patch will ever be released. Its only advice is to stop using the tool and migrate.

The flaw scores 9.8 out of 10, and the tool's management interface requires no password at all. AWS's only advice is to stop using it. It is an unusually blunt case of a serious hole being left permanently open.

Amazon won't patch a critical flaw in its AI model server! There is no fix coming

The AI boom runs on two things: computer chips and the money to buy them. This week Elon Musk, who is building one of the largest AI operations in the world, suggested the money is starting to get harder to find — even as he announced a colossal new pile of it. The $40 Billion And The Warning Musk said on his platform X that SpaceX had closed a roughly $40 billion debt package, described as primarily 'callable' debt, to fund purchases of AI chips for delivery through early 2027. In the same posts he warned that lenders have nearly stopped providing credit to AI data-centre firms that do not have substantial revenue from outside the AI build-out itself. A note of caution: almost every figure in the SpaceX deal comes from Musk's own posts, with no independently reported lender names, pricing or terms. Treat the specifics as his account until confirmed. The Signs He Is Not Alone What makes the warning hard to wave away is that other, independent data points to the same strain. Of roughly $80 billion in data-centre-related bonds issued so far in 2026, close to half — about $37 billion — carries a junk rating, below investment grade, according to an analysis of market data reported by Forbes. CoreWeave, one of the best-known specialist AI cloud providers, has seen around $4 billion of its corporate debt trade below 80 cents on the dollar, a distressed level, and its shares fell sharply in a single week even after a public vote of confidence from Nvidia's chief executive. Several infrastructure companies have delayed or shelved stock-market listings in recent weeks. Why It Matters The entire AI expansion assumes that the enormous cost of data centres and chips can be financed now and paid back later out of future revenue. If lenders lose their nerve — demanding higher interest, shorter terms, or simply walking away — the build-out slows, and the companies most exposed are those that borrowed heavily against revenue they do not yet earn. That is why a warning from someone raising tens of billions himself carries weight: he is describing the market he is actively borrowing in. Comparisons to WeWork, the property company whose debt-fuelled expansion collapsed, are now being made openly, with one outlet citing an estimate that trillions of dollars of AI infrastructure spending could be at risk of impairment by 2030. The Other Side In fairness, there are real reasons this is not simply a crash waiting to happen. Demand for AI computing is genuinely enormous and still growing, the largest players are backed by some of the most profitable companies on earth, and 'callable' debt of the kind Musk described can be a sensible way to finance equipment with a known delivery schedule. A cooling of the most speculative lending — junk-rated bonds for unproven providers — can be a market disciplining itself rather than seizing up. And a warning is not a default: no major AI data-centre collapse has happened. The counterweight is that bubbles are usually obvious only in hindsight, the sums involved now are historically large, and 'the demand will surely come' is exactly the assumption every infrastructure boom makes right up until it does not. A note on this report: the AI assistant writing this article is made by Anthropic, one of the companies whose own vast compute spending — detailed this week in its IPO filing — is part of the very build-out described here. What To Watch Whether borrowing costs for AI infrastructure keep rising and more listings get pulled. Whether a specific provider actually defaults, which would turn a warning into an event. And whether the revenue that is supposed to justify all this borrowing arrives fast enough to keep the lenders in the room.

Elon Musk says SpaceX closed a $40bn debt deal for AI chips while warning lenders have nearly stopped funding AI data-centre firms without outside revenue. With nearly half of 2026's data-centre bonds junk-rated and CoreWeave's debt distressed, the boom-or-bubble debate sharpens.

Elon Musk says SpaceX has just closed a $40 billion debt package to buy AI chips — and in the same breath warned that lenders have nearly stopped funding AI data-centre companies that lack large outside revenue. His warning lands amid real signs of strain: close to half of this year's data-centre bonds are rated junk, and one major AI cloud provider's debt is trading at distressed levels. The question of whether the AI build-out is a boom or a bubble is getting louder.

As neocloud platforms like CoreWeave and Nebius have been hammered over the last few weeks, and SpaceX has faced a stretch of volatility since its debut, Anthropic has filed a Form S-1 registration statement with the US Securities and Exchange Commission, aiming to go public the week of November 16, 2026, targeting a $1.8–$2 trillion valuation.“Anthropic intends to list its Class A common stock on the Nasdaq Global Select Market under the symbol “ANT.” The number of shares of Class A common stock to be offered and the price range for the proposed offering have not yet been determined,” read a statement from the maker of Claude. The filing has 90 pages of risks, including political risks and risks to humanity. It lists OpenAI and Google as competitors.
What does Anthropic's S-1 filing reveal about corporate accounts?
Anthropic reported first-half 2026 revenue of about $16.3 billion and a net loss of $80.7 billion through June. This means that its revenue jumped 1,304% from the first half of 2025. As neocloud platforms like CoreWeave and Nebius have been hammered over the last few weeks, and SpaceX has faced a stretch of volatility since its debut, Anthropic has filed a Form S-1 registration statement with the US Securities and Exchange Commission, aiming to go public the week of November 16, 2026, targeting a $1.8–$2 trillion valuation. “Anthropic intends to list its Class A common stock on the Nasdaq Global Select Market under the symbol “ANT.” The number of shares of Class A common stock to be offered and the price range for the proposed offering have not yet been determined,” read a statement from the maker of Claude. The Trump administration is promoting former Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orbán as a candidate for United Nations Secretary-General and has discussed a joint bid with Russia and China, the Wall Street Journal reported on October 25, citing sources in three countries. The report claims that the official from China and Russia has received a positive response, and Washington has since approached Orbán directly. According to the WSJ reporting, US officials raised the idea of "someone like Orbán" while weighing a successor to António Guterres, whose term ends December 31, 2026. A State Department official estimated that Orbán could secure eight votes "comfortably" on the 15-member Security Council, with ten more potentially within reach. The Hungarian Conservative reported that Britain and France, which hold veto power, could block his appointment even if the other three permanent members agree. US officials have contacted him to gauge his interest. President Donald Trump and Vice President JD Vance are expected to back a run, but any announcement could be delayed until after the November midterm elections. Orbán lost power in Hungary's April 12 election after 16 years in office, when Péter Magyar's Tisza party won a two-thirds majority in parliament. Since May, reporting has linked his interest in a senior UN post to his legal exposure at home, citing diplomatic immunity that the Secretary-General enjoys under the 1946 UN convention. Earlier reports said he was also weighing a role at FIFA or as UN deputy secretary-general. The Security Council is expected to begin formal assessment of candidates after informal straw polls that started in July. The next Secretary-General takes office January 1, 2027.

Canadian high diver Molly Carlson became the first woman to dive off an iceberg in Twillingate, Canada, showing a powerful message about her mental health. She made history following the inspiration of her own mental health struggles, using the iceberg as a symbol of courage, indicating that people’s struggles are often hidden beneath the surface, similar to icebergs that are visible just 10 per cent above the water. “Icebergs are incredibly dangerous. This is definitely the scariest thing I’ve ever done. I felt like I was in the air for like 10 minutes,” Carlson told CBC Sports, calling the jump “the dive of my dreams.”
Carlson's documentary
28-year-old Carlson, who originally hails from Thunder Bay, Ontario, accomplished the feat off the coast of Twillingate, Newfoundland. She performed a backward dive of nearly 15 metres into the frigid North Atlantic, and her achievement also appeared in the documentary Red Bull Iceberg Dive. It was released on Thursday, October 22, 2026. Although Carlson is no stranger to competition, regularly diving on the Red Bull Cliff Diving World Series, an iceberg presented its own set of problems. Unlike a traditional diving platform, icebergs are constantly shifting and can crack or even roll over with little to no warning. Also read: 'Skinwalker' sightings in Utah from 2010 detailed in new UFO Files Speaking to CBC Sports, Carlson shared that the project took shape over nearly four years, fuelled in part by her desire to showcase Canada’s stunning natural scenery to the world. According to NBC Bay Area, her preparation involved training in frigid waters, putting specialised wetsuits to the test, and picking up ice-climbing skills under the guidance of Canadian climber Will Gadd. Her team also invested considerable time scouting for an iceberg stable enough to safely hold the dive. Even after touching down in Newfoundland, Carlson had no guarantee the dive would go ahead. The weather, ocean swells, and the iceberg’s stability all needed to line up before she and her team could finally attempt the historic jump.

New Delhi: Johann Peries became the first Sri Lankan man to stand on the summit of Mount Everest on 22 May 2018. Years later, the memory of that day still defines the way he talks about every other mountain he has climbed and every challenge he has asked young people to face. Speaking to WION's Sidhant Sibal during his ongoing India visit, where he has come to collect a visa for Aconcagua in Argentina, the last of the Seven Summits, Peries describes the Everest summit as a moment that is still difficult to put into ordinary language. “It was very, very emotional and proud,” he says. “I was the highest person on the Earth, and I was looking down at the Earth… taking my flag out and holding it up there really brought in all my emotions and really made it feel very proud to be Sri Lankan.” The route that led there had already tested him. In 2016, he turned back only 400 metres short of the summit after a malfunction in his oxygen system. When he returned two years later, the mountain imposed a different kind of pressure once he passed a certain height. “You’ll start seeing dead bodies all over,” he says. “That really plays with your mind.” There were places, he adds, where he sat down and asked himself what he was doing there and whether it was worth it. Everest was not an isolated ambition. The habit of going into the hills began with his father on Sri Lanka’s Knuckles range. Because the island has no high mountains of its own, every higher peak became a deliberate test. “I wanted to challenge myself… to see whether it was possible for us being from an island,” he said. That sequence has since taken him to Island Peak, Kilimanjaro, Mont Blanc, Kosciuszko, Elbrus and, in 2026, Denali on his third attempt. On Denali, unlike Everest, climbers must carry everything themselves, loads of about 50 kilos, with no extensive support. In India, he spoke to schoolchildren at the Sri Lankan High Commission. The advice he gives them is drawn directly from the pauses on Everest and the returns that followed. “We all have our mountains in our lives,” he says. “Sometimes we fall down. So, my message is, however many times you fall down, if your mind is strong, if you have the determination and will, you will be able to stand up and keep going. Don’t stop, just keep going.”

JERUSALEM, Oct 26 - Israel is gearing up for a crucial parliamentary election on October 27, with preparations underway across the country to facilitate voting, monitor the process and count ballots. From polling stations and ballot boxes to election-integrity inspectors, the preparations involve a nationwide administrative operation ahead of a vote that could determine the country’s political direction. At the centre of the preparations is Israel’s Central Elections Committee, the independent statutory institution responsible for administering elections to the Knesset, the country’s 120-member parliament.During a visit to the committee in Jerusalem, WION reviewed the scale of the arrangements being put in place for election day, including the deployment of personnel, the distribution of voting materials and safeguards designed to oversee the electoral process.According to figures released by the committee, approximately 7.3 million Israelis are eligible to vote. The country will have 12,018 polling stations and 18,000 ballot boxes, while around 100,000 personnel are expected to be on duty on election day.The committee’s election budget stands at 690 million Israeli shekels, highlighting the scale of the logistical exercise.
450 million ballot slips and thousands of monitoring cameras
The preparations extend far beyond setting up polling booths. The Central Elections Committee says it has printed approximately 450 million ballot slips, with around 11.5 million slips allocated to each party list. The process involves approximately 250 tonnes of paper.Around 15,000 cameras are also being deployed for election-integrity inspectors to document voting and report potential irregularities. The committee’s presentation lists 6,209 accessible polling stations, including 3,621 designated as specially accessible stations. These arrangements are intended to help voters with disabilities exercise their right to vote.Training is another major component of the operation. Approximately 50,000 trainees are expected to participate in around 2,140 training sessions, according to the figures presented by the committee. The aim is to ensure that polling stations are staffed, voting procedures are followed and ballots are handled under established electoral rules.
Free transport and access to polling stations
Getting voters to their designated polling stations is another part of the preparations. The committee’s presentation lists free travel on 660 intercity public transport routes on election day, including Israel Railways services. The arrangements are intended to facilitate access for eligible voters who need to travel to cast their ballots.Israel generally requires citizens to vote in person at designated polling stations. Absentee voting is limited to specific categories, meaning most Israelis living overseas cannot simply cast their ballots from abroad. In another significant aspect of this election, thousands of Israelis living overseas are travelling back to the country to cast their ballots.According to Israel’s Central Bureau of Statistics, approximately 810,000 eligible Israeli voters live abroad. The political impact of their participation will depend on how they vote and how those ballots affect the distribution of seats among parties.
Election security and the challenge of misinformation
The preparations come amid heightened political sensitivities and concerns about the integrity of the electoral process.Israel’s police chief has pledged a full deployment to protect election integrity, while the Central Elections Committee has been dealing with complaints about campaign conduct and the use of digital content.Reports ahead of the vote indicate that the committee has received more than 276 petitions related to the election campaign, substantially more than in the 2022 election. The complaints have highlighted the challenges of regulating political messaging in an environment increasingly shaped by social media and artificial intelligence-generated material. The committee’s election-integrity inspectors are tasked with observing proceedings, documenting incidents and reporting suspected irregularities. Their role is to help ensure that voting and counting are conducted in accordance with the law.The use of monitoring cameras forms part of this wider oversight effort.
What is at stake in Israel’s election?
The election is the first national parliamentary vote since the Hamas-led October 7, 2023, attack and the wars that followed. The campaign has been shaped by questions about national security, political accountability and the future direction of the country.Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu faces a challenge from an opposition led by former military chief Gadi Eisenkot, alongside other political leaders seeking to replace the current government. One of the central issues is accountability for the security failures surrounding October 7. Critics of Netanyahu have called for an independent inquiry into how the attack occurred, while his supporters point to his security experience and leadership during the subsequent regional conflicts.Another major issue is military-service exemptions for ultra-Orthodox Jewish men. The debate has become increasingly contentious amid repeated reserve mobilisations and demands for a broader sharing of military obligations.Judicial reform, which triggered mass protests in 2023, remains part of the political debate, alongside economic pressures and the cost of prolonged conflict.Although security dominates the campaign, the vote will also test the ability of Israel’s political parties to bridge deep divisions and assemble a governing majority.
How Israel’s election system works
Israel uses a nationwide proportional representation system. Voters select a political party list rather than directly electing the prime minister or choosing an individual representative for a local constituency. The Knesset has 120 seats, and a party list must secure at least 3.25 per cent of the valid vote to qualify for representation.Seats are distributed proportionally among qualifying lists. A party that wins the most seats does not automatically form the government; it must be able to secure the support required for a parliamentary majority. At least 61 seats are needed to command a majority in the Knesset. As a result, coalition negotiations are central to the process of government formation. The election is therefore not simply a contest between individual leaders. It is also a test of which political blocs and smaller parties can assemble enough support to govern.
When will the results be known?
Polling stations are scheduled to open at 7 am and close at 10 pm local time on October 27, subject to different arrangements at certain polling facilities.Exit polls are expected shortly after the main polling stations close. These projections may offer an early indication of the distribution of seats, but they are not official results. The counting process will begin on election night, with preliminary figures expected to emerge as ballots are counted. The picture may remain uncertain until additional ballots have been processed, particularly where party lists are close to the 3.25 per cent electoral threshold. The final distribution of seats will determine the starting point for negotiations among political parties. Even after the results become clearer, forming a government could take weeks as parties negotiate the terms of a coalition.
Beyond election day
For Israel, the significance of this election extends beyond the immediate question of who wins the largest share of seats. The vote comes at a time of continuing debate over security, the consequences of October 7, military obligations, judicial reform and the country’s relationship with the wider world. For the Central Elections Committee, the immediate challenge is to conduct the vote in an orderly, accessible and properly supervised manner. For the political parties, the task will be to translate votes into seats and seats into a coalition capable of governing. The results will determine the composition of the next Knesset. The political negotiations that follow will determine who can command its support — and lead Israel into its next phase.

Michigan is one of the most closely watch seats this US Midterm Elections season as the contest is a tight one between Democratic candidate Dr. Abdul El-Sayed and Republican former Representative Mike Rogers. While US President Donald Trump has backed Rogers and targeted El-Sayed with his usual anti-Muslim rhetoric in almost all his campaign speeches, the Democratic candidate has shared stage with former President Barack Obama – making the battle one of the high-decibel one. Abdul El-Sayed secured the Democratic nomination after narrowly defeating moderate U.S. Representative Haley Stevens in a closely contested primary. Mike Rogers is leading the Republican ticket to defend the seat. The two candidates clashed in a high-stakes televised debate covering key economic and foreign policy pressures, including inflation and gas prices, international trade tariffs, and the impact of economic relations with Canada. Top Maldives opposition leader & former foreign minister Abdulla Shahid has called on President Mohamed Muizzu’s government to immediately publish the details of defence and maritime agreements signed during a recent visit to Pakistan, warning that secrecy risks breeding mistrust. Speaking to WION, Shahid, a senior figure in the opposition Maldivian Democratic Party (MDP) and former president of the UN General Assembly, said details of defence & maritime security must be shared promptly with the relevant parliamentary foreign affairs committees. “The government should immediately share with the two foreign committees of the Parliament and let the sense of confidence prevail,” he said, “so that there will be no room for speculation and no room for mistrust once again.”The visit of President Muizzu was the first by a Maldivian leader to Pakistan since 2015. Shahid described the long-standing Maldives-India relationship as time-tested, noting that India has consistently been the first responder in emergencies and that a “special bond” exists between the peoples of both countries. He expressed hope that the relationship would continue to flourish. On domestic politics, Shahid said the current government had failed to deliver on its promises and remained deeply unpopular. He pointed out that, under pressure, the administration could attempt to “fix” the 2028 presidential election. A key flashpoint, he argued, is a plan to introduce electronic voting. In a small population where physical ballots have produced results within two or three hours since the 2008 constitution, he said, e-voting could undermine public confidence without any practical need. “My fear is that this government… may try to fix the election. And a free and fair ballot may not be available for the people,” he said. He urged the opposition and international organisations to remain vigilant about the possibility. On the MDP primaries, Shahid welcomed multiple candidates as a sign of the party’s democratic character and public confidence. “What we will have to make sure is that we all come together after the primaries,” he said, adding that the party must “learn a lesson of the painful lesson of 2023” and unite behind the winner. He expressed confidence that he could lead a future government with experience, international connections and a focus on people-centred development. Elections are expected in the Maldives in September 2028.
