Taiwan responds to Trump’s chip tariff threat

Taiwan is taking bold steps to address growing trade tensions with the United States. In 2024, the island's trade surplus with the U.S. surged by 83 percent, reaching a record 64.9 billion dollars. In response to U.S. President Donald Trump's threat to impose tariffs of up to 100 percent on Taiwan’s semiconductor chips, the country has committed to increasing investments in the U.S. to strengthen bilateral trade relations.
