A new study has shed light on how excess iron trapped inside neurons may contribute to brain cell damage and accelerate neurological decline. Researchers identified a process known as “chronoferroptosis,” in which iron accumulation gradually weakens neurons' natural defenses, making them more vulnerable to stress and injury over time. The findings offer fresh insight into how brain aging and neurodegenerative disorders may develop, while opening new avenues for research into treatments aimed at protecting brain cells and preserving cognitive function.
