Waters between Spain's Balearic Islands and the Italian coast are 5°celsius warmer than last year. According to Spain's weather agency, the Spanish coast would be 3°c to 4°c hotter until at least mid-August. Scientists have warned that high temperatures across Europe have unleashed a prolonged marine heatwave in the Mediterranean sea, which could ravage ecosystems and kill off several species in the coming weeks.
