Spain train collision: Track maintenance practices now under intense scrutiny
At least 40 people have been killed and dozens seriously injured after a collision between two high-speed trains in southern Spain, in one of the country’s deadliest rail disasters in years. The crash occurred near Adamuz, close to Córdoba, when a Málaga–Madrid train derailed on a straight section of track and slammed into an oncoming Madrid–Huelva service. Spanish officials say the cause remains unknown, calling the incident “really strange,” especially as the track had been recently renovated. Emergency responders deployed intensive care units, ambulances, and rescue teams through what regional leaders described as a “night of deep pain.” All injured passengers have now been evacuated to hospitals as investigations continue.
