Hawaii’s Kīlauea volcano is on the brink of its 40th eruptive episode as recent seismic tremors and increased lava activity signal that sustained lava fountaining could begin soon, according to the U.S. Geological Survey Hawaiian Volcano Observatory. The volcano has been erupting intermittently since December 23, 2024, with low‑level lava activity and pauses between episodes, and scientists say a new phase of high fountaining may emerge within days, keeping alert level at Watch and aviation color code at Orange.
