While they made it to the 2022 T20 World Cup in Australia, beating Pakistan in their opener, Zimbabwe again failed to break into the top two teams in the 2023 World Cup Qualifiers at home. Sri Lanka and the Netherlands booked their ticket to India for the marquee event.&nbsp;

Zimbabwean seamer Henry Olonga has issued a public apology for informing everyone of the false news of his teammate Heath Streak’s death earlier this week. After posting on social media (on X, formerly known as Twitter) about Streak’s demise, Olonga’s post received attraction.

However, he later posted confirming that the news is false and Streak is alive. After all of this drama unfolded, Olonga, a few days later, issued a public apology on his Facebook handle, writing, "Extremely sorry that I took it as gospel."

"Sad news coming through that Heath Streak has crossed to the other side. RIP @ZimCricketv legend. The greatest all rounder we produced. It was a pleasure playing with you. See you on the other side when my bowling spell comes to an end...," Olonga posted on X informing everyone about Streak's death, who is battling cancer.

In a one-liner confirmation Olonga received on WhatsApp, Streak texted saying he was alive and asked Olonga to reverse his decision (using a sense of humour).&nbsp;

"I can confirm that rumours of the demise of Heath Streak have been greatly exaggerated. I just heard from him. The third umpire has called him back. He is very much alive folks," Olonga said in a separate post.

Upon receiving flak for spreading false news about Streak’s death on social media, Olonga – Streak’s childhood friend and a former teammate, shared a lengthy note on his Facebook handle, clearing the air between the two and revealing the relationship both share.

He said after he received this information, he texted Streak and his family to confirm the news. Since it was too late at night and he didn’t get any revert from anyone soon, it led to a misunderstanding of the situation.&nbsp;

"In any case, I was informed that Heath had taken a turn for the worse. We were encouraged to write kind words for his eulogy. So it appeared imminent. I will not go into too much detail how the miscommunication occurred, but rest assured I heard the story first on Facebook like everyone else," wrote Olonga in his Facebook post.&nbsp;

"I did immediately text Heath and Nadine to verify. It was a while before they could respond as it was late at night. I texted a few close cricket colleagues who know the family well, and they confirmed it was true. I did ask pointed questions to verify, but they were convinced."&nbsp;

"After all, I had only heard from Heath the day before so it seemed kind of sudden. But I truly was devastated as I genuinely believed he was gone. And all the emotion I felt I am sure those who encountered the story felt it too," the former seamer added.

Detailing further on the series of events, Olonga wrote,&nbsp;"Obviously, I am extremely sorry that I took it as gospel. I then placed my own tributes, which seemed to gather a lot of traction ( amongst many tributes out there) only to get a text from Heath a few hours later in which he asked me to reverse the decision. (He has always had a great sense of humour)."&nbsp;

A day after former Windies legend Shivnarine Chanderpaul’s son, Tagenarine Chanderpaul scripted history by scoring a double hundred in the first innings of the ongoing first Test in Bulawayo, Zimbabwe’s very own Gary Ballance on Tuesday, February 7th, entered record books with his maiden Test ton for his new team. With his hundred on day four, Ballance became only the second batter in Test history to score two centuries for two different countries (England and Zimbabwe) -&nbsp;Kepler Wessels was the first one to achieve this feat for South Africa and Australia.

However, following a controversy surrounding 'institutional racism’ at the Yorkshire Cricket Club, Ballance’s contract was terminated.

It was then he decided to return&nbsp;to where it all began for him and signed a new two-year contract with Zimbabwe Cricket who welcomed him with open arms. Earlier this year, he made his white-ball debut for Zimbabwe in the home series against Ireland.

Meanwhile, the left-handed Ballance remained unbeaten on 137 off 231 balls as Zimbabwe declared their first innings on 379 for nine.

Indian spinner Ravichandran Ashwin has highlighted the disparity between India and Zimbabwe when it comes to cricket. While India remains a superpower in world cricket, Zimbabwe has been slowly finding its feet in international cricket after recovering from the ICC ban in 2019. Zimbabwe cricket is back on track and the team has been doing well.

Zimbabwe have played a number of matches so far this year and are currently taking on heavyweights India in a three-match ODI series at home. Former Zimbabwe captain Brendan Taylor has been banned from all forms of cricket for three and a half years after he accepted breaching four charges of the ICC Anti-Corruption Code and, separately, one charge of the ICC Anti-Doping Code. Taylor represented Zimbabwe in 284 international matches between 2004 and 2021, scoring 9,938 runs with 17 centuries.

Brendan Taylor, former Zimbabwe captain, has made heads turn with his glaring claim on Monday (January 24). The veteran keeper-batsman accepted that he was conned and bribed by an Indian businessman for spot-fixing matches at the international level during a visit to India in 2019.

In late 2019, Zimbabwe cricket was in dire straits. Their players were reeling under financial crisis as the Zimbabwe Cricket Board (ZNC) wasn't able to pay the national players. In addition, the International Cricket Council (ICC)&nbsp;had even suspended Zimbabwe after the ZCB was not able to keep out government’s interference with the board’s administration. Thus, Taylor was offered a visit to India amid all these uncertain times -- with regard to&nbsp;sponsorships and the potential launch of a T20 competition in the African nation.&nbsp;

Taylor revealed that while he was reluctant, he travelled to India for the sake of revamping his fortunes. However, he was offered drugs and blackmailed for spot-fixing international matches. While Taylor has revealed that he didn't fix any games, he is guilty of accepting the money and drugs.

The 35-year-old cricketer shared a four-page statement on his official Twitter handle and&nbsp;captioned it, "To my family, friends and supporters. Here is my full statement. Thank you!"

The veteran batter further revealed that&nbsp;the businessman and his colleagues had taken him for a dinner on the last night of his visit to the Asian country.&nbsp;"We had drinks and during the course of the evening they openly offered me cocaine, which they themselves engaged in, and | foolishly took the bait.&nbsp;I was handed the USD$15 000 but was told this was now a ‘deposit’ for spot fixing and that an additional USD$20 000 would be paid once the “job” was complete. I took the money so I could get on a plane and leave India. I felt I had no choice at the time because saying no was clearly not an option. All I knew was I had to get out of there,"&nbsp;the Harare-born player&nbsp;claimed.

"It took me 4 months to report this offence and interaction to the ICC. I acknowledge this was too long of a time but I thought I could protect everyone and in particular, my family. I approached the ICC on my own terms and I hoped that if I explained my predicament, my genuine fear for our safety and wellbeing, that they would understand the delay.&nbsp;Unfortunately, they did not, but I cannot feign ignorance in this regard. I have attended many anti-corruption seminars over the years and we know that time is of the essence when making reports," Taylor further wrote.

Taylor has been a great servant of the game and a superstar in Zimbabwe cricket. The star batter, who has 2,320, 6,684 and 934 runs in Tests, ODIs and T20Is respectively, has also advised youngsters to not fall into such traps. He said, "I would like to place on record that I have never been involved in any form of match-fixing. I may be many things but I am not a cheat. My love for the beautiful game of cricket far outweighs and surpasses any threats which could be thrown my way."

Taylor is set to fan multi-year ban. The cricketer has already stated that he would accept ICC's decision after failing to report the serious matter on time.
