The pomp and circumstance surrounding Xi's travel to Saudi Arabia is sending an implicit message to the US. Abdulkhaleq Abdulla, a United Arab Emirates expert and visiting senior fellow at Harvard University, told CNN that this is a new Saudi Arabia, a new Gulf and a new reality. “The new reality is that China is rising and Asia is rising and whether the US likes it or not, we have to deal with China," he added.&nbsp;

The state news agency stated that Xi will also take part in a summit which will be attended by the six-member Gulf Co-operation Council's rulers and hold talks with the leaders from the Middle East, stated the state news agency.

The tour of the Chinese leader coincides with the increased tensions between the United States and Saudi Arabia over issues like regional security, human rights and energy policy.

The partnership between the US and Saudi Arabia suffered the latest blow in October when the OPEC+ oil bloc decided to decrease crude oil production by two million barrels per day, a step the White House claimed amounted to "aligning with Russia" on the Ukraine war.

In its latest meeting on Sunday, OPEC+ decided to keep those cuts unchanged. China is the biggest customer of Saudi Arabia's crude oil and has been purchasing around a quarter of the total exported Saudi oil.

According to analysts, the two leaders, apart from energy, will be discussing potential deals which can lead to Chinese firms'&nbsp;deeper involvement in mega-projects which are part of Prince Mohammed's vision of diversifying the economy of Saudi Arabia beyond oil.

In a very unusual and shocking incident at the ruling Communist Party Congress' concluding session, Hu was lifted from his chair by two men and escorted out under the complete glare of the media, disrupting and attracting a lot of media attention at the event in which Chinese President Xi Jinping secured the historic third term as the Communist Party's leader.

On the morning of Monday, Hu was seen along with the Chinese People's Liberation Army's other top leaders in the hospital, where he paid his final respects to Jiang before the latter was cremated, as seen in the footage by the state broadcaster CCTV.

Jintao appeared frail as he stood next to Xi as the officials thrice bowed before the body of Jiang. Later, Hu was unsteadily walking with an attendant's help as the cadres were seen walking around the funeral display and expressing their grief to Jiang's widow.

The World Health Organization said on Friday that it was happy that China has decided to loosen some of its COVID-19 restrictions in the aftermath of protests all around the country.

"We're pleased to learn that the Chinese authorities are adjusting their current strategies and really trying to calibrate now the control measures they need... with the lives, the livelihoods and the human rights of people," WHO emergencies director Michael Ryan said at a press conference.

"It's really important that governments listen to their people when people are in pain," he added.

European Union chief Charles Michel spoke to Chinese President Xi Jinping about the protests and the tough restrictions imposed as part of the zero-Covid policy. Michel told the media that Beijing has hinted at decreasing the restrictions in the wake of a less dangerous Covid strain.

According to AFP, Xi told Michel that Chinese "people were frustrated" after three years of the pandemic and the protests are an expression of the displeasure. While China did not agree with the European model of avoiding lockdowns, Xi suggested that few restrictions will be removed.

The EU's council chief came for a day visit to Bejing, after Xi's invitation. Michel has urged the Chinese President to use his influence with Russia to respect the UN charter and Ukraine's sovereignty. He said that the activities in Ukraine are highly unacceptable and dangerous as well, AP reported.&nbsp;

Both Chinese President and Russian President Vladimir Putin share a strong bond. Weeks before Moscow's invasion began, both leaders affirmed their bond as having "no limits." Beijing even stepped up its oil purchases from Russia.&nbsp;

Michel's visit also seeks to balance the EU's wish for more exports to China, raised issues on human rights and the need for a peaceful assembly.&nbsp;

On Thursday, Michel told reporters that he raised human rights issues during the meeting including the issue of Muslim minorities in Xinjiang who are being forcefully assimilated to eradicate their religion.&nbsp;

Earlier German Chancellor Olaf Scholz also visited China. Scholz also urged Xi to use his influence in Russia and raised human rights issues.&nbsp;

Beijing reports record 5,006 Covid cases as China stumbles through worst outbreak, public anger

Canadian federal police are investigating widespread interference by China in Canadian affairs, including its "democratic processes", the nation's top cop has said in a letter to a parliamentary committee but without detailing the allegations.&nbsp;The Standing Committee on Procedure and House Affairs is looking into possible foreign interference in Canadian elections.&nbsp;The letter obtained by AFP on Tuesday was sent to the committee by Royal Canadian Mounted Police (RCMP) Commissioner Brenda Lucki.

In it, she says there was "no evidence at the time" of interference in the 2019 federal election following reports that Beijing had funded a "clandestine network" of candidates.

But, she added, "The RCMP can confirm that it currently does have investigations into broader foreign actor interference activities."

Prime Minister Justin Trudeau said in the House of Commons that Canada's "intelligence services have highlighted many times that interference in Canadian affairs by foreign powers is an ongoing thing."

"However, Canadians can be reassured that the integrity of our elections was not compromised," he added.

At the G20 summit earlier this month, Trudeau raised allegations of Chinese meddling with President Xi Jinping but got an on-camera dressing down by Xi after their discussions were leaked to the media.

Speaking to reporters on Tuesday, Public Safety Minister Marco Mendicino declined to comment on specific RCMP probes, but added: "We take allegations of foreign interference very seriously."

On Monday, a Chinese electric battery researcher facing charges of industrial espionage was granted bail.

Yuesheng Wang, 35, allegedly used his position at public utility Hydro Quebec to conduct research for a Chinese university and filed patents "in association with this foreign actor," using proprietary information.

The RCMP has also said it is looking into China's use of illegal police stations in Toronto to carry out policing operations on foreign soil - which Beijing has denied as "completely false."

The letter obtained by AFP on Tuesday was sent to the committee by Royal Canadian Mounted Police (RCMP) Commissioner Brenda Lucki. In it, she says there was "no evidence at the time" of interference in the 2019 federal election following reports that Beijing had funded a "clandestine network" of candidates.
