Women's T20 WC: Hosts South Africa register 6-run win over England, to face Australia in final

India gave a tough fight to defending champions Australia but bowed out of the Women's T20 World Cup 2023, in South Africa, with a five-run loss in the first semi-final on Thursday (February 23). Being asked to bowl first, India were rusty as Australia rode on Beth Mooney's 54, captain Mag Lanning's 49* and Ashleigh Gardener's 31 to post 172-4. In reply, India were on course courtesy of Harmanpreet Kaur-Jemimah Rodrigues' 69-run fourth-wicket stand but fell apart to manage 167/8.

After India lost three quick wickets and were tottering at 28&nbsp;for 3 in pursuit of 173, in Newlands, Cape Town, skipper Harmanpreet and Jemimah revived the run-chase with a confident stand. The duo were going well when Jemimah fell for a good-looking 43, off 24 balls, before the Indian captain got run-out in an unfortunate manner, for a 34-ball 52. After her dismissal, India fell from 133-5, still in a good position with only 40 required off 32 balls, to get restricted for 167 for 8. Hence, the Indian skipper was in tears after the contest.

Australia beat India by five&nbsp;runs, on Thursday,&nbsp;in the semifinal of the ICC Women's World T20 in a thrilling finish. Needing 16 runs in the final over, India scored 10 runs as they finished on&nbsp;167&nbsp;for 8&nbsp;to fall behind in another knockout game. Aussie Ashleigh Gardner was adjudged Player of the Match for her 31 runs off 18 balls and 2/37 in four overs.

Chasing 173, Deepti Sharma and Radha Yadav were on the crease in the final over as&nbsp;India managed just five runs off the first three balls. Radha Yadav then was caught off&nbsp;Gardner on the fourth ball, leaving India with the daunting task of needing two sixes to win the game.&nbsp;Shikha Pandey, the new batswoman, however, could manage only a single, and Deepti Sharma finished off with a four, which was too little and too late.

India, at one stage, looked set to run away with the match when skipper Harmanpreet Kaur and Jemimah Rodrigues were on the crease but eventually fell short, yet again. The duo added 69 runs for the fourth wicket in just 7.2 overs. Rodrigues was the first of them to go back, but not before scoring a valiant 43 off 24 balls. Skipper Kaur, who scored 52 off 34 balls,&nbsp;then was caught short as&nbsp;her bat got stuck while she tried to drag it back in, leaving India five down on 133.

Earlier, being asked to bowl first, India wasn't off to a great start as Alyssa Healy-Beth Mooney stitched a 52-run opening stand. While Healy returned for an unimpressive 26-ball 25, Mooney struck a 37-ball 54 whereas captain Lanning came to her own as the innings progressed and ensured the scoreboard kept ticking. Lanning (34-ball 49*) and Ashleigh Gardner's 18-ball 31 took Australia to a daunting 172 for 4 on a tricky wicket.

In reply, India lost Shafali Verma quickly as&nbsp;Smriti Mandhana, last match's Player-of-the-Match, followed suit for a 5-ball 2. After three quick wickets, skipper Harmanpreet and Jemimah Rodrigues steadied the ship with a timely partnership, filled with confident strokeplay. At the halfway mark, India needed 80 off 60 balls. Against the run of play, Jemimah top-edged one to the keeper to give Australia a key breakthrough and bring them back into the contest. India crumbed from thereon as the required run rate went up as Australian bowlers used the slower ones and made scoring difficult.

With the defeat, India bowed out of the showpiece event with three wins and two defeats (versus top teams such as England and Australia). A high dot-ball percentage and ordinary bowling in the semis led to their downfall, coupled with fitness concerns.

Australia will now be aiming for a record-extending seventh trophy. They will face the winner of England versus South Africa, which is the second semi-final on Friday (February 24), on Sunday (February 26).

Tendulkar gave a motivational speech to the young girls following their achievements. He was quoted as saying during the felicitation ceremony, "By winning this World Cup, you have given a dream to young girls in India, to represent the country."

Tendulkar also opined that&nbsp;the inception of the Women’s Premier League (WPL), to kick off in March, is going to change the landscape of women’s cricket in the country. In this regard, he pointed out, "The beginning of the WPL is going to be the biggest thing. I believe in equality for men and women, and not just in sports. There should be equal opportunity. The entire nation will celebrate and cherish your victory."

Shafali-led India was unbeaten in the group stage before losing to Australia in their opening match of the Super 6. Post that, they enjoyed a three-match winning streak, defeating the likes of Sri Lanka, New Zealand, and England respectively, to win the title. The International Cricket Council (ICC) on Monday announced the complete schedule for the Women's T20 World Cup 2023. The tournament is set to be played in South Africa in February next year. India have been placed in Group 2 along with England, West Indies, Pakistan and Ireland.&nbsp;

The Harmanpreet Kaur-led side will open their campaign against arch-rivals Pakistan in Cape Town on February 12 before locking horns with West Indies at the same venue on February 15. India will then take on England and Ireland on February 18 and 20, respectively.

All eyes will be on Cape Town on February 12 as India will resume their&nbsp;epic rivalry with Pakistan. The two teams last met in the T20 World Cup earlier this year where Harmanpreet &amp; Co. registered a comfortable victory. India and are also set to face Pakistan in the ongoing Women's Asia Cup 2022 in Bangladesh on Friday (October 07).

Hosts South Africa will face Sri Lanka in the opening game of the tournament in Cape Town on February 10. While India have the likes of Pakistan, England, West Indies and Ireland in their group, Group 1 consists of defending champions Australia, New Zealand, South Africa, Sri Lanka and Bangladesh.

Australia, who defeated England in the final this year to lift their fifth T20 World Cup title, are the most successful team in the history of the competition. They will once again head into the tournament as one of the favourites and will be hoping for a successful title defence.

All five teams in each group will lock horns once against each other in the group stages. The top two teams will qualify for the semi-finals and the winners of the semi-finals will play in the all-important final on February 26.

ICC announces schedule for Women's T20 World Cup 2023, India to open campaign against Pakistan

The ICC board on Sunday convinced its chairman Gregor Barclay to complete his term till end of October before the global body starts its nomination process to find a new chairman where the Indian cricket board could play a massive role.

In another significant development, Pakistan Cricket Board chairman Ramiz Raja's proposal for a four-nation tournament has been unanimously rejected by the board, putting an end to speculations of multiple India versus Pakistan matches on neural venues.

The other notable development was BCCI secretary Jay Shah being inducted into the ICC cricket committee.

The two-day board meeting which concluded in Dubai on Sunday was a win-win one for the Indian cricket board as Barclay's continuation till October gives it ample time to strategise whether it will field a candidate for the top post in the month of November.

"There has been no discussion on renomination of Barclay. But he will finish his current two year term as a chairman till end of October. So the process of nominating a new chairman only starts in November," an ICC Board member told PTI on conditions of anonymity.

Originally, there was a possibility that the renomination or nomination would have happened in the month of June but that changed after deliberations between the member boards.

The decision also helps the BCCI buy time as they are likely to have their AGM in September after which the composition of the national parent body will be clear.

The BCCI has already appealed, seeking a a few changes in the Lodha Constitution which many feel till date is practically non-implementable.

It will be interesting to see whether president Sourav Ganguly and secretary Jay Shah go for a cooling-off in September.

Shah's name is doing the rounds as the next chairman of ICC but there has been no confirmation from either the BCCI secretary himself or sources close to him about his apparent interest in throwing his hat in the ring.

Ramiz's proposal shot down by board 
 
PCB chairman Ramiz Raja's ambitious proposal of conducting a four-nation tourney comprising India, Australia, England under the aegis of the ICC was unanimously rejected by the all-powerful board even though there was a projected revenue of USD 750 million for five years.

"In any case, ICC's Financial and Commercial Affairs Committee (F&amp;CA) was against this proposal. As we know that the MPA (Members Participation Agreement) doesn't allow any member nation to host more than tri-nation, organizing four-nation every year would have in any case devalued ICC's own marquee events," a board member said.

Another sensitive issue which board members are talking in hushed tones is whether Raja will remain PCB chairman for long after Imran Khan was removed from Prime Minister's position.

PCB chairman is a political appointee as Pakistan PMs are always Patron-in-chief of the board. Hence Raja, an appointee of Imran Khan, might be forced to tender his resignation in current political climate.

The BCCI was always clear in its stand that it won't play four-nations with its calender choc-a-bloc and a lot of bilateral commitments that need to be honoured. On top of that is player's workload and mental health.

There were reports that ECB's Tom Harrison was also independently interested in exploring ideas of a four-nation tourney but it's now evident that nothing of that sort happened at board meeting.

Neutral umpires to make comeback in Tests 
 
The ICC Cricket Committee acknowledged that the performance of home umpires was strong and had not affected games. The use of home umpires had also led to 12 members of the International Panel umpires making their Test match debut.

In line with a previous recommendation from the men's Cricket Committee, the CEC agreed that more neutral match officials should be utilised as travel restrictions are lifted while building on the success of the use of home umpires.

From the next season, one neutral on-field umpire will make a comeback in Test matches along with home team's elite panel umpire for company. For white ball games, ICC's Elite and Emirates panel home umpires will continue doing the job. 
 
Afghanistan will be represented in ICC by Mirwais Ashraf 
 
The ICC Board received an update from the Afghanistan Working Group which recommended Mirwais Ashraf as the ACB's appointed representative to the Board.

The ACB confirmed their continued commitment to developing women's cricket and will submit a full action plan and budget to do so to the Working Group which will continue to monitor the situation and receive regular updates on its progress.

The International Cricket Council (ICC) on Monday announced record viewing figures for the ICC Women’s T20 World Cup 2020, which became one of the most-watched women’s sporting event in the history with cricket continuing to set fresh benchmarks on and off the field.

The event had already racked up 1.1 billion video views through the ICC digital channels – 20 times the views from the previous editions in 2018 and 10 times the previous most successful women’s cricket event, the ICC Women’s Cricket World Cup 2017.

A whopping 9.02 million fans in India watched the 'Women in Blue' take on Australia in the ICC World T20 final, breaking all viewership records across TV as well as digital platforms.

India, though, were thrashed by the Southern Stars at the historic MCG where 86,174 people were present for the summit clash. 
The ICC released a viewership data on Thursday which showed that Harmanpreet Kaur's team struck a chord with the fans, leading to a staggering 5.4 billion total viewing minutes for the tournament across India.

Total viewing minutes is arrived at after a calculation based on how many people watched any particular match for how much duration.

ICC's digital channels went overdrive during the February 21 to March 8 event in Australia, with an astonishing 1.1 billion total video views, making it the most watched event in the history of women's cricket. In fact, it was the most watched cricket event after the 2019 Men's World Cup.

The figure was more than 20 times the video views delivered in the previous edition played in the West Indies in 2018 and 10 times the previous most successful women's cricket event, which was the ICC World Cup in 2017.

As India made the final of the event for the first time, fans watched 1.78 billion minutes of live match action on TV of that game alone. The figure is 59 times more than the final of the previous edition in 2018 between Australia and England, and comprised 35 per cent of the overall viewership for the tournament.

The digital streaming figures too were impressive in India, peaking at 3.1 million for concurrent users of Hotstar during the final.

In Australia, the average audience for the final was 1.2 million, making it the most watched women's cricket match and the sixth-most watched cricket game ever on subscription television in Australian broadcast history.
