With the second edition of the Women’s Premier League (WPL) set to happen this year, India wicketkeeper-batter Yastika Bhatia said she is excited to wear the Mumbai Indians jersey when the tournament begins and felt she had a memorable time with the franchise last year.

Acquired by Mumbai for INR 1.5 crore in the inaugural WPL auction, Yastika made 214 runs in 10 innings, at an average of 21.4 and strike-rate of 112.04. She also affected 13 dismissals from behind the stumps as the franchise won their maiden WPL title in their home city. Yastika was also a recipient of the WPL emerging player of the season award.

“It was memorable. Nobody had an idea about how things would pan out. But the way we were welcomed into the team, we were made to feel like family. We would spend a lot of time talking about how we could improve our game.”

“I am really looking forward to the forthcoming edition of the WPL. I can’t wait to wear the Mumbai Indians jersey and go back to the ground. It’s a completely different feeling being part of MI,” said Yastika to broadcasters JioCinema.

Yastika has been a member of the Indian team across all formats since 2021 and recalled the moment when the news of a maiden call-up to the national team came. “Everyone was happy. My father and mother were in tears. They acknowledged that my efforts had paid off.”

“Even I was happy, but at the same time I was focusing on the fact that I had to help India win the series and then help the team win the World Cup. I realised that my responsibility had increased.”

“Before my debut, Smriti di had hinted that that I might make my debut and helped me calm down. She advised me to play the same way I used to play for Baroda. That series against Australia went off well.”

“But till the time I made my debut, self-doubt had begun creeping in. But at the same time, I was working on improving my game. I was also speaking to Kiran (More) Sir about how I could take my game to the next level,” she elaborated.

Talking of her early life, Yastika said she was into various sports before cricket came calling. “I liked playing sports since childhood. I would go for swimming, karate and badminton. But I never thought cricket would become my career because academics were as important growing up. One of my neighbours used to play Ranji Trophy.”

'Can’t wait to wear Mumbai Indians jersey again in WPL', says Yastika Bhatia

RCB women’s team captain and Indian women's cricket team vice-captain Smriti Mandhana shared her perspective on the potential impact of a multi-city format for the Women's Premier League (WPL) while speaking at the RCB Innovation Lab’s Leaders Meet India in Bengaluru last week. While reflecting on the success of the WPL, Smriti Mandhana expressed enthusiasm for the prospect of adopting a multi-city format at the first-of-its-kind summit that brought together influential leaders from various industries to delve into the future of sports.

"It would be great to have WPL in the multi-city format. I think that might be the next step and I am sure the people right here would look into it and make it happen. As an RCB fan, I would love to play in Chinnaswamy where people are chanting ‘RCB RCB’ and just to be in that environment. That is something which is one step ahead for us that it (multi-city format) can reach to places where women's cricket hasn't reached and to get new audience going into women's cricket,” Mandhana commented.

The 27-year-old believes that the RCB Innovation Lab’s Leaders Meet India was a much-needed platform to understand how different business people look at sports as a platform to generate digital numbers and feels the event should happen more often to interact with other sports icons and business top brass.

Ahead of the WPL auction and the second season of the tournament, RCB captain Mandhana revealed the importance of a conducive environment that the franchise has prepared and she will prioritise the time she spends with the team. “A lot of thoughts have gone into what kind of combinations we need in terms of releases or retention. So we are looking forward to the WPL auctions and hopefully, we get the players who we are looking forward to getting,” added Mandhana.

If you see the last Olympics or Commonwealth or Asian Games, the kind of medals women's athletes have gone and got for the country is a big inspiration for a lot of smaller city girls out there to pursue their passion. I think women's sports in general should be treated separately and by doing that they can definitely sell a lot of things in terms of the ticketing or the digital rights.”

When asked about the areas women’s cricket needs in terms of further investment or further focus to keep propelling forward, Mandhana suggested focusing on the grassroots level. “The only thing that we could invest in is the grassroots level of women's sport in general because a lot of interest is developed with the Indian Women's team or the WPL tournament. Invest more so that we get a lot more cricketers women cricketers,” she remarked.

Upcoming edition of Women's Premier League will be mor exciting | The India Story

The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) is mulling the possibility of staging the Women’s Premier League (WPL) during a winter window as they try to engage more audience. The inaugural edition that was played in Mumbai in 2023 could be further expanded to a home-away format in the future according to Joint Secretary Jay Shah. The idea to move the WPL to the winter window could see the premier competition take place during the Hindu festival of Diwali.

"We are mulling the possibility of scheduling the WPL, in the home and away format, in the Diwali window; not two seasons in a year but just a different time window," Shah said during an interaction with mediapersons.

"Women's cricket now has a dedicated audience base and this number will only keep growing as we expect an encouraging turnout at the next WPL,” Shah further added.

The inaugural edition of the WPL was a huge success after Mumbai Indians beat Delhi Capitals in the final in March. Harmanpreet Kaur’s army beat Delhi in a one-sided contest with all matches taking place in Mumbai at the Brabourne Stadium and the DY Patil Stadium.

The possibility of playing the WPL second edition during Diwali later in the year could have a remote possibility. One of the main reasons for this is ODI World Cup, which takes place later in the year from October 5 to November 19.
Shah also commented on the media rights deal for the Indian team as a meeting is scheduled in June and July. The board is likely to close the deal before Afghanistan but the deal is likely to come into effect from the Australia series later in the year before the ODI World Cup.

"The BCCI Media Rights tender will be on schedule this year (June-July) and will depend on the Afghanistan tour, but more likely, the process will start from the Australia series. The Board will speak to all stakeholders concerned and will come up with an interim decision," BCCI secretary Shah said on Friday.

BCCI mulling to shift WPL to winter window during Diwali; Home-Away format also on agenda

In an exclusive interaction, Saba Karim -- the former Indian wicketkeeper and BCCI selector -- spoke at length on the Women's Premier League (WPL) 2023 edition, predicted the finalists, opined on MS Dhoni's IPL future, and shared his top-four teams for upcoming IPL 2023.

Smriti Mandhana-led Royal Challengers Bangalore (RCB) had a winless run in their first five games in the Women's Premier League (WPL) 2023 before they beat Uttar Pradesh Warriorz (UPW) by five wickets on Wednesday (March 15). While Mandhana & Co. remain alive in the race to enter the playoffs, they only have a slim chance. Nonetheless, they will be much relieved having earned their maiden win in WPL 2023.

Ahead of their clash versus UPW, the RCB camp's mood was uplifted by Indian star Virat Kohli. Kohli, who represents the RCB in IPL, is in Mumbai -- where WPL is being held -- to take part in Hardik Pandya-led India's first ODI versus Australia, on March 17. Thus, he took some time out of his schedule and gave a pep talk to the Mandhana-led RCB.

In a video shared by the RCB’s official Twitter handle, on Thursday (March 16), Virat shared some words of wisdom and said, "I’ve been playing IPL for 15 years. And I haven’t won it yet. But that doesn’t stop me from being excited every year. That’s all I can do. That’s the effort I can put into every game and every tournament that I play. If we win, great. If we don’t, then I am not going to go to my grave thinking that if only I had won an IPL, I would be a happy man. It doesn’t happen like that. So always think about the opportunity that you have rather than how bad it is right now."

He added, "There is always a flip side to it, and it could always be worse than this. And the fact that we haven’t won the IPL, but I still feel that we have the best fans in the world. Only because we were always committed to every game that we played for RCB. That has been the most special thing for our fans. There’s no guarantee of giving you a cup every year, but there’s a guarantee of giving your 110% every year, and that’s all you can strive to do."

WPL 2023: Virat Kohli's pep talk with Smriti Mandhana's RCB goes viral ahead of their first win - Watch

The inaugural Women's Premier League (WPL) 2023 edition has become a big hit. It has gained mileage as it proceeds towards the business end of the tournament. So far, the Harmanpreet Kaur-led Mumbai Indians (MI) have been on a roll, very much like their men's counterpart in the Indian Premier League (IPL), and remain at the top of the points table with as many as five wins on the trot.

On Tuesday (March 14), MI defeated Gujarat Giants (GG) by 55 runs to confirm a spot in the playoffs. Thus, they became the first side to do so in WPL history. Apart from them, Meg Lanning-led Delhi Capitals (DC) have also performed well with four wins from five games. UP Warriorz Women (UPW) have two victories and an equal number of losses whereas GG have managed only a solitary triumph from five encounters. Nonetheless, the Smriti Mandhana-led Royal Challengers Bangalore (RCB) remain at the bottom and are the only winless side.

After five games, Mandhana & Co. have failed to get off the mark in the points table. To add to their woes, they have suffered big defeats in as many as four fixtures. Thus, their Net Run Rate (NRR) is also a dismal -2.109. Given their current form, they are very much likely to miss the playoffs race but are not out of contention just yet. RCB remain alive mathematically but need a quick turnaround to progress ahead.

EXPLAINED: How RCB can still end up in the top 3

To the surprise of many, RCB still has a slim chance. While they cannot finish in the top two, they still have a chance to enter the knockouts as the third-best side.

Mandhana & Co. need to topple their opposition in their remaining three games. Not only this, but RCB also need some favour from other teams. The Bengaluru franchise needs to hope UPW lose all of its remaining games. In addition, they need to pray that GG does not emerge on top in more than one game solely due to RCB's poor NRR.

As of now, it looks highly likely that MI and DC will end at the top two with UPW holding onto the third spot. However, anything can still happen if RCB and GG come to the party. It is to be noted that the team who finishes at the top will directly enter the final. Meanwhile, an Eliminator will be held between the second-ranked and third-positioned sides.

RCB's last outing and the road ahead

RCB face UPW in their next outing, on Wednesday evening (March 15) at the DY Patil Stadium, Navi Mumbai. The last time both sides faced each other saw the UP franchise demolish RCB by ten wickets. Mandhana & Co. batted first and only managed 138 all-out, which was chased down by UP with ten wickets and seven overs in hand.

RCB go into this match after a last-over loss versus the DC unit, on Monday (March 13), where the latter won by six wickets while chasing 151.

A confident DC unit won the toss and opted to bowl first at the Dr. DY Patil Sports Academy, Navi Mumbai. Mandhana fell early for RCB as her poor form continued. She has only managed scores of 35, 23, 18, 4, and 8 so far in the five-team competition. Ellyse Perry's 67 and Richa Ghosh's 16-ball 37 not out propelled the team to 150 for 4. However, it was just a par score.

Meanwhile, DC were made to work hard in their run-chase. Alice Capsey, Jemimah Rodrigues, Marizanne Kapp and Jess Jonassen (15-ball 29 not out) stood tall to take their side home. Jonassen returned as the Player-of-the-Match for her rapid knock and whereas her teammate Shikha Pandey (3 for 239) also played a vital role in the victory.

At the post-match presentation, Smriti said, "Really good effort by our bowlers to take it till the 20th over. Definitely a lot of improvements but a lot of things to work on still. The partnership got us into the game, they both batted brilliantly. They used their experience to get us to a defendable total. Not the best of the starts, including my batting. The first 14 overs really hurt us, even 10-15 runs more would have helped. Towards the fag-end of the tournament, the wickets are going to get slower. Even in the last game, spinners got the ball to turn and pace-off and slower balls were working."

After the game versus UPW, RCB will face two more games to play; against GG and MI respectively.

Will Mandhana, Ellyse Perry, and the likes fire on all cylinders with time running for RCB? Only time will tell...

WPL 2023: EXPLAINED! How Smriti Mandhana's RCB can still qualify for playoffs after five successive defeats

The Women's Premier League's (WPL) inaugural edition is almost at halfway mark but Royal Challengers Bangalore Women (RCB-W) are still to win a match. The star-studded Challengers are languishing at the bottom of the table with five losses in five matches.

The Adani Gujarat Giants’ captain and world champion Beth Mooney will not play any further part at the inaugural season of the Women’s Premier League due to an injury. The Australian ace suffered a calf strain while batting in the second innings of the match between the Gujarat Giants and the Mumbai Indians at the DY Patil Stadium on 4 March.

Mooney, however, did return to training subsequently but for her to recover to full fitness and complete her rehabilitation, it is likely to take 4-6 weeks. “I was really looking forward to the maiden WPL season with the Adani Gujarat Giants. But unfortunately, injuries are part and parcel of the sport and I am gutted to be missing the remainder of the season. I, however, will be keeping a close eye on the team’s performance from afar and will be rooting for them every single day. "

"And though I will be away from the field of play for the rest of the season, I am looking forward to coming back stronger, fitter and I will definitely be hungrier next season. For now, I wish the Adani Gujarat Giants squad all the very best for the rest of the WPL season,” said Beth Mooney.

With Mooney out for this season, the Adani Gujarat Giants have drafted in Laura Wolvaardt, the dynamic South African opener who had recently played a key role for hosts South Africa in the 2023 Women's T20 World Cup.

Wolvaardt was the top scorer for the South African women’s team in the World Cup, with three half-centuries from six matches. Her contribution played a major role in helping the South Africans reach the final of the tournament, where they lost to the world champions Australia.

We look forward to witnessing many boundaries and sixes from her bat through the rest of the WPL season,” said Mithali Raj, Mentor and Advisor, Adani Gujarat Giants.

With the unfortunate change in the squad, India’s Sneh Rana will now be the captain and Australian Ashleigh Gardner will be the vice-captain for the season.

Uttar Pradesh Warriorz (UPW) took on Gujarat Giants (GG) in the third game of the inaugural Women's Premier League (WPL) 2023 edition on Sunday evening (March 05), at the DY Patil Stadium, Navi Mumbai. Batting first, the Sneh Rana-led side made a challenging 169 for 6 and reduced the opposition to 105 for 7. However, Grace Harris and Sophie Ecclestone's stunning 70-run unbeaten eighth-wicket stand propelled their side to a memorable three-wicket win to open their campaign in style.

The equation was 53 required off the last 18 deliveries for Ecclestone-Harris before the pair's onslaught stunned GG as they lost their second game in a row, on successive days. The momentum changed with the 18th over, where Ecclestone-Harris took on Kim Garth -- who returned with a stunning 5 for 36 -- and churned out 20 runs. While Garth couldn't end her spell on a high, she ran through UPW's top order and removed Alyssa Healy, Shweta Sehrawat, Kiran Navgire, Tahila McGrath and Simran Shaikh. Her first three scalps came in the third over whereas she accounted for her last two wickets in the 13th over. Here's a video of Garth's three strikes in the third over:

Sania enjoyed a successful stint as a major champion having won six titles and will be looking forward to mentoring the RCB side, led by Smriti Mandhana. Women's Premier League: Tata Group wins title rights for inaugural edition

Royal Challengers Bangalore and a player with jersey number 18 leading the franchise, look like a pair made in heaven. While Virat Kohli, whose jersey number is 18, led RCB for nearly a decade in the past, the franchise has now named Smriti Mandhana - whose jersey number is also 18, as the new captain of their team for the maiden edition of Women’s Premier League (WPL), which begins on March 4th. The star opener was not only the first female player to be sold in the WPL auction, but she also happened to be the most-expensive one too – with RCB splurging INR 3.4 crores for her. On Saturday, via a video that was posted on the RCB's social media handles, this announcement was made public. Ironically, it was RCB’s former skipper Virat Kohli and current captain South Africa’s Faf du Plessis, who revealed RCB’s new skipper in WPL for season one.
