Regarded as one of women cricket’s greatest batters, Edwards is the second-highest run-getter in both women’s ODIs and Tests. Since retiring from professional cricket six years back in 2017, Edwards coached a few teams like the English domestic side Southern Vipers, Southern Brave in The Hundred, and Sydney Sixers in the WBBL. Other than this, she has an experience of coaching the USA team on the international stage too.

Edwards is one common name in women’s cricket having achieved several milestones across her two-decade career. For leading England to its maiden Women’s T20 World Cup title and the 50-over World Cup in 2009, the star batter was awarded an MBE. Besides this, she was also part of five Ashes-winning squads for England.

Upon bagging the services of such huge names in women’s cricket for the inaugural edition of the Women’s Premier League, Mumbai franchise owner Nita Ambani in a statement said, "It is wonderful to see more and more women in sport, excelling not just as players, but also as coaches, administrators, and support staff. This is an exciting time for women's sport in India."

Women’s Premier League player auction date announced

The BCCI on late Sunday night announced the date of the Women’s Premier League player auction which will now take place on Monday, February 13th in Mumbai. A maximum of 90 players will be sold in the day-long auction and each team will be allotted a purse of INR 12 crores (US$ 1.46 million approx). Each franchise can buy a minimum of 15 players and maximum of 18 with seven foreign players including one from the associate nations.

Meanwhile, in the WPL, unlike in the IPL, teams will be allowed to play five overseas players provided one belongs to the associate nation. In the first edition of the WPL, a total of 22 matches will be played. While the top-ranked team will qualify for the finals directly, the second and third placed teams will face off in the Qualifier to determine the second finalist.

The Mumbai team in Women’s Premier League (WPL) has roped in former England women’s captain Charlotte Edwards as the new head coach. Edwards will join the all-women coaching staff at her new franchise and will join India legend Jhulan Goswami, who was earlier appointed as the mentor and the bowling coach.

WPL: Mumbai team ropes in legend Charlotte Edwards as head coach, Jhulan Goswami as mentor

In the latest development in relation to the inaugural edition of the Women’s Premier League (WPL), the tentative dates for the player auction are out – on February 11th in New Delhi or on 13th in Mumbai, as reported by ESPNcricinfo. Earlier, the BCCI was planning to organise a player auction on February 6th but due to several reasons it got postponed. Although the call on the final date will be made by the board within this week, it is also expected that Mumbai will play host to the maiden WPL’s edition – which is likely to be held between 4th to 24th March this year.

What led to the postponement of WPL player auction?

As four of the five WPL franchises owners also own teams in the ILT20 tournament in the UAE and in the SA20 in South Africa, and with their finals scheduled to take place on 11th and 12th February, respectively, all of these collectively requested the BCCI to postpone the WPL player auction.

The second reason why the board decided to hold the WPL player auction on a later date is that all these franchise owners didn’t get ample time to assemble the coaching staff that eventually will play a huge role in bidding for the players.

Later last month, the IPL team owners of Mumbai Indians, Delhi Capitals and Royal Challengers Bangalore alongside Adani Group and Capri Global bagged owning rights of five teams at a total amount of INR 4669.99 crore (USD 572.78 million approx.) in what is deemed as the biggest deal in women's cricket.

While Adani Sporttsline have bagged the owning rights of Ahmedabad franchise, Capri Global, which is a non-banking finance company had gone for the Lucknow one. Mumbai, Delhi and Bangalore, who own IPL teams as well, have, however, picked their state-based franchises only.

Mumbai likely to host first WPL season

The BCCI is believed to have picked Brabourne Stadium and the DY Patil Cricket Academy in Navi Mumbai as venues for the maiden edition of the Women’s Premier League. The sole reason for picking just one city to host 22 matches is that the tournament will begin in less than seven days of culmination of the Women’s T20 World Cup in South Africa, making it easier for the players, teams and even franchises to start with training at just one place.

Women's Premier League: Veteran Mithali Raj joins Gujarat Giants as mentor and advisor

Chelsea were awarded the Women's Super League title on Friday as the Football Association applied a points-per-game formula to decide standings from the curtailed season.

The Blues were a point behind Manchester City at the top of the table when the campaign was stopped due to the coronavirus pandemic in March, but had played one game fewer.

At the other end of the table, Liverpool are relegated to the Championship, with Aston Villa promoted to the 12-team top-flight.

Chelsea and City will represent England in the 2020/21 women's Champions League.

"Football pales into insignificance at a time like this, but it also has the capacity to bring joy and happiness to fans and communities everywhere," said Chelsea manager Emma Hayes.

"For my players and staff, winning the league is something to be proud of and I will tell them that when I speak to them.

"A lot of blood, sweat and tears from every player, at every club, has gone into this season and it is important we recognise that and celebrate the fact we have ended a highly competitive season as champions."

The cost involved in providing testing kits to complete the season was a major hurdle for even the top level of the women's game to overcome.

Liverpool expressed their disappointment that the WSL would not follow the example of the top two leagues in the men's game in England by returning to complete the campaign.

"Liverpool FC is disappointed by today's decision on how the 2019/20 Women's Super League season has been concluded, which will see the Reds relegated to the Championship," the club said in a statement.

"The focus of our women’s team and staff since the beginning of the crisis was to be ready to return to WSL play when it was safe and proper to do so.

"We believe we would have been able to meet all operational requirements but a return to play was deemed impractical."

However, City accepted the decision that sees them miss out on the title by the finest of margins.
