The Delhi police, however, have suggested dropping the case filed by the minor, citing insufficient evidence. The chargesheet comes after months of protests by prominent Indian wrestlers like Sakshi Malik, Vinesh Phogat and Bajrang Punia.

The Delhi Police has officially filed a charge sheet against Wrestling Federation Chief Brij Bhushan Sharan Singh and as they promised, Brij Bhushan is facing charges of sexual harassment and stalking. Both of these are bailable offenses however a third charge of outraging the modesty of a woman has also been levied against him which is a non-bailable offense. The 1000-page report comes after six months of protests in the national capital.

We urge them not to take any hasty decision in this matter and also fervently hope that their grievances are heard and resolved quickly. Let the law of the land prevail."

Madan Lal, member of the victorious 1983 WC team, told ANI, "Heartbreaking that they decided to throw their medals. We aren't in favour of them throwing their medals because earning medals isn't easy and we urge the Government to sort out this issue as soon as possible."

After deciding not to immerse&nbsp;their medals in the holy river Ganges, the protesting wrestlers are set to go on a hunger strike against WFI chief Brij Bhushan Singh.

The wrestlers have been staging a sit-in at Jantar Mantar since April 23 following the allegations and demanded criminal action against Bhushan who has since been stripped of all administrative powers by the sports ministry.&nbsp;

As of late Sunday, the police had filed an FIR against the protesting wrestlers and others for rioting, unlawful assembly and obstructing public servants in their duty. Senior Delhi Police Officer Dependra Pathak after the detention had said that the wrestlers had been detained for “violating law and order.”

On Monday, Bajrang Punia also responded to a former IPS officer’s tweet who said that the protesters should be shot. “This IPS officer is talking about shooting us. Brother is standing in front, tell me where to come to get shot… I swear that I will not show my back, I will take your bullet on my chest,” said Punia, in response to the statement.&nbsp;

Protesting Indian wrestlers to immerse medals in Ganges before fast unto death, tweets Bajrang Punia

Delhi police detained on Sunday several wrestlers including Olympic medallists as well as dozens of their supporters as they attempted to march to parliament in New Delhi, an AFP reporter at the scene said.

A group of wrestlers have held a sit-in since last month demanding the arrest of Brij Bhushan Singh, the wrestling federation chief, over allegations of sexual harassment and intimidation.

On Sunday the wrestlers attempted to march to India's new parliament just as it was being inaugurated by Prime Minister Narendra Modi but they were halted by hundreds of police.

Among those detained and hauled away into buses were Olympic bronze medallists Sakshi Malik and Bajrang Punia.

"We respect our athletes, but we will not let there be any disturbance in the inauguration," broadcaster NDTV quoted a senior police official as saying.&nbsp;

Security in the national capital was tightened ahead of the inauguration of the new parliament building by Modi.

Personnel also stood guard on the borders of Delhi after a group of farmers attempted to enter the city to support the protesting wrestlers.

Earlier this month, dozens of farmers broke down police barricades in the city to join the protest.

Wrestling Federation of India WFI President Brij Bhushan Sharan Singh on Saturday said that he is ready to face a narco test and urged the protesting wrestlers not to hold any kind of agitation near the new Parliament building, which will be inaugurated on Sunday.

"These players sat on agitation on January 18. I wrote to the Sports Ministry that I would step aside from wrestling and wait for the investigation to end. Two investigation committees were made by the Sports Ministry and Indian Olympic Association. But the wrestlers did not wait for the investigation to end and returned to dharna. I was questioned for six hours by the police. I did not say anything. These players demanded that I undergo a narco test. When I saw that our elders from khaap panchayat wanted me to do so, I agreed. What else I should do? I am ready for investigation, narco test. I trust Supreme Court and Delhi Police," said Brij Bhushan in his statement.

Wrestlers protesting against the Wrestling Federation of India (WFI) took out a candle march in Delhi on Sunday.

Wrestlers have been protesting at Jantar Mantar for over 10 days demanding the arrest of Wrestling Federation of India (WFI) president and BJP MP Brij Bhushan Singh and his sacking from the post in the light of allegations of sexual harassment by the wrestlers. World Championships and Commonwealth Games medalist Vinesh Phogat said on Sunday that a "big call" will be taken by the protesting wrestlers if the Wrestling Federation of India (WFI) president Brijbhushan Sharan Singh is not arrested by May 21.

"The decision that has been taken in this fight for justice, that if something is not done by May 21, if our demands (to arrest Brijbhushan Sharan Singh) are not met during that period then we will have to take a big call," said Vinesh to the media.

Vinesh said that their demand to get Brijbhushan Singh arrested.

On their future in wrestling amid protests, Vinesh said, "We will compete. If god presents an opportunity before us then we will play definitely. We are still trying to train as much as possible during the protests, trying to find time for it and plan our training schedule," said Vinesh.

Ahead of the farmers' march coming from various states in support of the protesting wrestlers in the national capital, security has been beefed up at the Delhi-Ghazipur border on Sunday.

The Samyukt Kisan Morcha had announced holding nationwide protests including in Delhi in support of the wrestlers.

According to an SKM statement on Saturday, on May 7, several leaders of the organisation from Punjab, Haryana, Delhi and Uttar Pradesh will visit the protest site at Jantar Mantar and extend support to the protesting wrestlers.

Speaking on the allegation against Wrestling Federation of India (WFI) chief and BJP MP Brij Bhushan Sharan Singh, farmer leader Joginder Singh, at the Tikri border, said, "They are in power and it is very difficult to stand against a person who is misusing his power and position for so long, but we will fight against it."

"Government's job is to stop us but we will go to the place where we want to go. If they try to stop us, it will cost them. There are no plans of staying here, if government and administration stop us, then we'll have to stay here," he told ANI.

Notably, SKM had spearheaded the year-long farmers' protest on the borders of the national capital against the now-repealed farm laws.

On April 23, Bajrang Punia, Vinesh Phogat and Sakshee Mallik returned to the protest site at Jantar Mantar, claiming that six women wrestlers, and a minor, filed a sexual harassment complaint against Brij Bhushan Sharan Singh at Connaught Place Police Station but Delhi Police did not register an FIR. The protesting grapplers also demanded that the Sports Ministry make the findings of the Oversight Committee public.

They have accused the Sports Ministry, IOA of not listening to their grievances despite the formation of an 'Oversight Committee' headed by IOA President PT Usha as well as an ad-hoc committee to look into wrestling's day-to-day affairs. Amid the protest, here are some facts about the expenditures done by the government on wrestlers and wrestling, as per sources from the media, the Union Sports Ministry, and the Sports Authority of India (SAI).

The government has spent over Rs 150 crores on wrestling during the last five years.&nbsp;Rs 63 crores were spent on sending wrestlers to foreign countries for coaching under the guidance of experts.

Technologically-advanced equipment and specialised training were provided to wrestlers at a cost of Rs 2.5 crores. Also, out-of-pocket allowances worth Rs 15 crores were provided to the expert.

Apart from all this, Rs 35 crore have been spent on domestic training, Rs 25 crore on national coaching, Rs 7 crore on specialised support and Rs 2 crore for national championship events.

Top wrestlers like Vinesh Phogat and Bajrang Punia, have personal expenses of Rs 2.16 crore&nbsp;and Rs 2.58 crore&nbsp;respectively.

Wrestlers will be taking out a candle march at 7:00 PM on Sunday as part of their protest against the Wrestling Federation of India and its president Brijbhushan Sharan Singh.

Vinesh Phogat also said, "The further course of action is being discussed with our legal team. They will decide what to do next."

Earlier, on Friday, Union Sports Minister Anurag Thakur said the Delhi Police were conducting an unbiased investigation against the wrestling federation chief.

He also urged the grapplers to allow the ongoing probe to get over.

"A demand had been put forward to form a committee and a panel was constituted. Two FIRs have also been registered by Delhi Police and Supreme Court also gave its verdict. Delhi Police are&nbsp;conducting a fair investigation," said the minister. 
 
"They asked for a committee, which has been already constituted," Thakur said on the sidelines of an event in Lucknow.

On April 23, Bajrang Punia, Vinesh Phogat and Sakshee Mallik returned to the protest site at Jantar Mantar, claiming that six women wrestlers, and a minor, filed a sexual harassment complaint against Brij Bhushan at Connaught Place Police Station but Delhi Police did not register an FIR. The protesting grapplers also demanded that the Sports Ministry make the findings of the Oversight Committee public.

On Wednesday, the Indian Olympic Association (IOA) president PT Usha met the protesting wrestlers at Jantar Mantar.

Usha, a retired Indian track and field athlete and a Rajya Sabha MP, had earlier ruffled feathers with her remarks that the wrestlers should have approached the IOA instead of hitting the streets against the WFI and its president.

"Indian Olympic Association is having a committee for sexual harassment, instead of going to the streets they (protesting wrestlers) could have come to us earlier but they did not come to IOA. It is not good for sports not only for wrestlers, they should also have some discipline," the IOA president told reporters last week, a remark that didn't go down well with the wrestlers.

Three months ago, prominent wrestlers came forward to lead a protest against the WFI chief, following which the Union Ministry of Youth Affairs and Sports announced the formation of an 'oversight committee' to probe allegations against the WFI, Brij Bhushan Sharan Singh and some coaches.

The protesting wrestlers have made it clear that they won't move until they get justice and Brij Bhushan be removed as the WFI chief and put behind bars.

A bench headed by Chief Justice of India D.Y. Chandrachud said that "having due regard to the ambit of the petition and registration of FIRs, we close the proceedings at this stage. The petitioner can move the jurisdictional magistrate or the high court concerned for suitable reliefs."

The bench, also comprising Justices P.S. Narasimha and J.B. Pardiwala, noted that the purpose of the petition before this court was registration of the FIR and also the police have indicated that proper security has been provided to the complainants.

During the hearing, senior advocate Narender Hooda, representing the wrestlers, pointed at news reports claiming a policeman, who was allegedly drunk, misbehaved with the grapplers on Wednesday night at the protest site.

Solicitor General Tushar Mehta, representing Delhi Police, said two political leaders from two parties went with folding beds in a truck and the police tried to stop it and a scuffle took place.

Mehta said they alleged that cops were drunk but everyone was medically tested and nobody was found drunk.

Hooda said Singh was openly taking the wrestlers names and he has become a TV star, giving interviews and alleging some businessman is behind all this and questioned about about concealing their identity.

Mehta said complainants are also giving interviews, taking all names. Senior advocate Harish Salve, representing Singh, objected to Hooda`s submissions.

He further informed the court that a senior lady IPS officer is investigating the matter and statements of complainants have already been recorded and some more statements will be recorded in a day or two.

At the end of the hearing, Hooda said: "I am sure as soon as the case is over Delhi Police will drag its feet. This should be monitored by a former judge."

The bench said: "We have confined ourselves to the prayer and that is served and if you are aggrieved by the magistrate court order you can approach Delhi High Court."

The plea filed by wrestlers said they attempted several times to convince Delhi Police to register an FIR, but they failed.

It said women athletes who make the nation proud are facing sexual harassment, and instead of getting the support they deserve, they are being forced to run from pillar to post to get justice.

The plea added said the accused person in this case is an influential person and is misusing the process of law to evade justice and further manipulating the legal system and obstructing justice.

"It is crucial that the police take all complaints of sexual harassment seriously and register FIRs promptly and not create yet another obstacle by delaying the registration of FIR."

Addressing the media, Olympian Phogat said on Tuesday (May 02), "It is very difficult to stand against a person who is misusing his power and position for so long. When no action was taken, then we sat on dharna."

He revealed that the wrestlers will continue their protest till Brij Bhushan isn't behind bars. Speaking to the media, he said, "PT Usha met us and assured her support. She said she is first an athlete and then an administrator. She assured us she will help us in getting justice. We will remain here till Brij Bhushan Sharan Singh goes to jail."

The likes of Bajrang, Sakshi Malik, Vinesh, etc., have led the protest, held in the national capital after as many as&nbsp;seven female&nbsp;wrestlers --&nbsp;grabbed&nbsp;eyeballs and become a huge talking point nationwide.

Nonetheless, WFI chief Brij Bhushan has denied all claims. He recently stated, "Resignation&nbsp;is no big deal, but I won't do it as a criminal".

The Delhi Police is set to register an FIR against Wrestling Federation of India (WFI) chief and BJP MP Brij Bhushan Singh after the latest row from the top wrestlers of the nation. The Delhi Police on Friday informed the Supreme Court of India about the latest move after a petition was filed by the top women wrestlers alleging Brij Bhushan Singh of sexual assault. On Wednesday, the Delhi Police informed the Supreme Court that it would need a preliminary inquiry before they could file an FIR against WFI chief.

A minor complainant was logged against Brij Bhushan as the petitioners placed material alleging danger to her safety. The SC then directed the Commissioner of Police to assess the threat perception of a minor complainant and look deeply into the matter. The SC has also asked the Commissioner of Police, Delhi to look into the matters, leaving it open to assess threat perception against six other wrestlers. The latest allegations were made on April 21 which has seen the WFI chief in more trouble.

"We were worried on two grounds - security and safety and the second is there are 40 cases against him," Kapil Sibal appearing for the petitioner said.

The SC had earlier stated that it would hear the plea made by the seven wrestlers after the latest round of protest began at the Jantar Mantar in Delhi. After the fresh protests, the BJP MP released a video saying he would wish to embrace death the day he feels helpless.

The wrestlers have demanded that the Centre make public the findings of the five-member oversight committee that investigated the allegations against the WFI chief. The grapplers, including Bajrang Punia, Sakshi Malik and Ravi Dahiya, had started their protest over the issue in January but ended their sit-in after an assurance from Union Sports Minister Anurag Thakur.

The latest allegations were made on April 21 which has seen the WFI chief in more trouble. "We were worried on two grounds - security and safety and the second is there are 40 cases against him," Kapil Sibal appearing for the petitioner said. The SC had earlier stated that it would hear the plea made by the seven wrestlers after the latest round of protest began at the Jantar Mantar in Delhi. After the fresh protests, the BJP MP released a video saying he would wish to embrace death the day he feels helpless. The Indian Olympic Association (IOA) president PT Usha said on Thursday that the wrestlers should have approached the IOA earlier instead of going out in the streets against the Wrestling Federation of India (WFI) and its president Brijbhushan Sharan Singh, who the wrestlers accused of sexual harassment and mismanagement of athletes.

"Indian Olympic Association (IOA) is having a committee for sexual harassment, instead of going to the streets they (protesting wrestlers) could have come to us earlier but they did not come to IOA. It is not good for sports not only for wrestlers, they should also have some discipline," said Usha to the media. Ace Indian grapplers such as Vinesh Phogat, Sakshi Malik, Bajrang Punia, and many other wrestlers are involved in the protest against the WFI chief.

Olympic gold medalist Abhinav Bindra supported the wrestlers in their protest with a poignant tweet on Wednesday.

"As athletes, we train hard every day to represent our country on the international stage. It is deeply concerning to see our athletes finding it necessary to protest on the streets regarding the allegations of harassment in the Indian wrestling administration," Bindra tweeted.

"My heart goes out to all those who have been affected. We must ensure that this issue is handled properly, with the athletes' concerns heard and addressed fairly and independently. This incident highlights the crucial need for a proper safeguarding mechanism that can prevent harassment and ensure justice for those affected. We must work towards creating a safe and secure environment for all athletes to thrive in," he added.

Over the previous four days, the wrestlers have slept and trained at the protest location.

On Wednesday, grapplers held a candle march at Jantar Mantar in the national capital as they continue their protest against the Wrestling Federation of India (WFI) and its president Brijbhushan Sharan Singh. Vinesh Phoghat, Bajrang Punia and Sakshi Malik were present in the candle march.

While talking to the media, Sakshi Malik said, "We urge PM Modi to listen to our Mann Ki Baat. Even Smriti Irani ji is not listening to us. We are trying to show them the light through this candle march," said Sakshee to the media.

The wrestler said that no FIR had been filed after the wrestlers registered a complaint against the WFI and its chief on Friday.

"We trust Supreme Court that it will give us justice," said Sakshi Malik.

Delhi Police on Wednesday submitted before the Supreme Court that a preliminary inquiry would be needed before lodging an FIR against WFI president Brij Bhushan Singh over allegations of sexual harassment. Delhi Police apprised the court that the police felt that there were some issues that needed preliminary inquiry. However, Delhi Police clarified that it has no hesitation to lodge FIR immediately if the court orders.

After a protest led by some prominent wrestlers of the country started this January, the Union Ministry of Youth Affairs and Sports had announced the formation of an 'oversight committee' to probe allegations levelled against the WFI and its chief Brij Bhushan Sharan Singh and other coaches.

The committee was tasked with submitting a report on the issue to the ministry.&nbsp;

On Sunday, top wrestlers from the country, including Bajrang Punia, Vinesh, and Sakshi Malik, returned to the protest site at Jantar Mantar and demanded that an FIR be lodged against the WFI chief. They are also demanding that the government should make public the findings of the report submitted by the Oversight Committee, which investigated allegations of sexual harassment against Brij Bhushan. 
 
Vinesh expressed her disappointment over the Sports Ministry`s failure to take action against Brij Bhushan despite their protest three months ago. "How long is it going to take for the government to act on the report submitted by the committee? We are still waiting to hear from them," the World Championship medallist emphasised.

Seven women grapplers and their families are getting threats from WFI officials, alleges Vinesh Phogat

The Supreme Court on Tuesday issued a notice on a plea by the country`s seven top wrestlers seeking a direction for the registration of an FIR against Wrestling Federation of India (WFI) chief Brij Bhushan Sharan Singh. 
 
A bench headed by Chief Justice of India D.Y. Chandrachud and comprising Justice P.S. Narasimha, said: "There are serious allegation in plea on behest of international wrestlers with regards to sexual harassment meted out to them. Issue notice returnable on Friday. Liberty to serve standing counsel NCT Delhi. The complaints which form an attachment in sealed cover and shall be again resealeda.". 
 
The plea was mentioned before the bench by senior advocates Kapil Sibal and Narendra Hooda, representing the wrestlers. 
 
Sibal submitted that this is the wrestlers` matter and they are sitting in dharna, and seven women have complained and one is a minor. He stressed that an FIR has not been registered and added that the plea seeks one against Singh over alleged sexual harassment by women wrestlers.

During the hearing, Sibal argued that there is a committee report which has not been made public. The Chief Justice asked Sibal to show the case papers. Sibal said please see the complaint by the minor, the young girl had won a gold medal and added even the police personnel can be prosecuted for not registering an FIR.

A letter from the Sports Ministry, the Under Secretary to the Centre, said, "I am directed to say that the Ministry, vide order dated 23 January 2023, has appointed an Oversight Committee (OC) for the Wrestling Federation of India (WFI) after allegations made by certain prominent athletes against the President, Officials and some coaches of the Federation for sexual harassment, as also regarding financial mismanagement and arbitrariness in the Functioning of the Federation."

The letter pointed out that the oversight committee has submitted its report to the Sports Ministry and is currently under examination. The preliminary scrutiny of the report has resulted in the following major findings:

-Absence of a duly constituted Internal Complaints Committee under the Prevention of Sexual Harassment Act, 2013, and lack of an adequate mechanism for awareness building among sportspersons, for grievance redressal, etc.

-Need for more transparency and consultation between the Federation and stakeholders, including the sportspersons

-Need for effective communication between the Federation and the sportspersons.

"It may also be noted that after the submission of the report, the OC has ceased to exist," added the letter.

The ministry in its letter declared the WFI elections, scheduled to be held on May 7 as per media reports and a notice by WFI on its website as "null and void", calling for new elections under a neutral body/returning officer.

"Meanwhile, based on the reports in media, and from the notice dated 16.04.2023 posted on the official website of the WFI. it is understood that the election to the EC has been scheduled on May 7, 2023. In this regard, considering the current situation, it is expedient that the said election process should be treated as null and void, and that fresh elections to the EC should be conducted under a neutral body/Returning Officer," said the letter.

"Since Wrestling is an Olympic Sport and WFI is an affiliate member of the Indian Olympic Association (IOA) and taking note of the current situation of administrative void in WFI, it becomes incumbent on part of the IOA to make suitable interim arrangements for managing WFI so that sportspersons of wrestling discipline do not suffer in any manner."

Notably, Delhi Police on Monday sought a report from the investigation committee set up by the Union Sports Ministry to investigate the allegations against Wrestling Federation of India (WFI) chief Brij Bhushan Sharan Singh and has begun a probe into the fresh complaint by wrestlers, a senior officer said on Monday.

"A report has been sought from the probe committee and after that, the investigation can get a direction. Seven players had filed a complaint against the WFI chief. Many facts will come to the fore after getting the report of the committee," said the Delhi Police official.

After a protest led by some prominent wrestlers of the country this January, the Union Ministry of Youth Affairs and Sports had announced the formation of an 'oversight committee' to probe allegations levelled against the WFI and its chief Brij Bhushan Sharan Singh and other coaches.

The committee was tasked with submitting a report on the issue to the ministry.

Top wrestlers have now resumed their sit-in protest at Jantar Mantar here in the national capital after filing a complaint at the Connaught Place police station on Friday (April 21) stating that seven female wrestlers, including one minor, were harassed and exploited by Brij Bhushan in his capacity as WFI chief.

Olympic medalist Bajrang Punia said that this time "all parties are welcome" to join them and they won't back down till action is taken against the BJP MP.

"It's been more than 48 hours since the complaint was made, but an FIR has not been filed yet," Punia told ANI.

The ace wrestler said that this time they will not turn down anyone, and whoever wants to support their protest could come and join them.

"...This time, all parties are welcome to join our protest whether it is BJP, Congress, AAP or any other party.....we're not affiliated with any party...," he said.

Delhi Commission For Women (DCW) has issued a notice to Delhi Police to register an FIR on the issue.

Top Indian wrestlers, including Bajrang Punia, Vinesh Phogat, Ravi Dahiya, and Sakshi Malik, held a sit-in protest in Jantar Mantar in January this year, demanding that Brij Bhushan be removed from the head office and the Wrestling Federation of India be disbanded.

The letter pointed out that the oversight committee has submitted its report to the Sports Ministry and is currently under examination. The preliminary scrutiny of the report has resulted in the following major findings: -Absence of a duly constituted Internal Complaints Committee under the Prevention of Sexual Harassment Act, 2013, and lack of an adequate mechanism for awareness building among sportspersons, for grievance redressal, etc. -Need for more transparency and consultation between the Federation and stakeholders, including the sportspersons -Need for effective communication between the Federation and the sportspersons. "It may also be noted that after the submission of the report, the OC has ceased to exist," added the letter. India wrestler protest row: Panel to hold sporting body WFI's top election in 45 days, says govt

The elections which were originally set to be held on May 7 have now been postponed after the latest row that saw the wrestlers continue their agitation at Delhi's Jantar Mantar. While there is no clarity when the elections will take place, the wrestlers are holding out for their demands while they have also moved to the Supreme Court of India to for an FIR against WFI chief Brij Bhushan Singh Sharan.

As reported by IANS earlier, wrestlers present at Jantar Mantar revealed they even received threats after they tried lodging an FIR against the WFI chief at the Parliament Street Police station; however, the police refused to do so for reasons not known yet.

"We are getting threats from several quarters, and after waiting for more than two months; we tried to file a complaint at the thana (police station), but the police officers shooed us away. We don't know what is happening here. We will start our protest again and sit on dharna (protest) at Jantar Mantar till our demands are met," the unnamed wrestler told IANS, as quoted by Times of India.

Early this year, several women wrestlers came forward and protested at the Jantar Mantar against Brij Bhushan Singh for sexually harassing them in the past on a few occasions. The matter reached the Sports Ministry, who appointed an Oversight Committee under the chairmanship of veteran boxer MC Mary Kom to look into the matter and bring out the truth.

At that time Singh had said, “As I came to know that wrestlers had started protesting in Delhi, I didn't know what the allegation was about. I came to Delhi with a ticket.”

He added, "Regarding the allegation that Vinesh has made [of sexual exploitation], is there anyone coming forward with these allegations? Is there any athlete whose come forward with these allegations &amp; said the Fed pres. has done some sort of sexual assault?" he said.

“It is alleged that the federation is acting like a dictator. Neither will you give trial, nor will you fight at the national level. The problem is when the federation makes the rules. These players, who are sitting on dharna today, not even a single one of them fought in the national,” Bhushan added.

Owing to the controversy surrounding the Wrestling Federation of India (WFI), the United World Wrestling (UWW) on Thursday announced that the upcoming Asian Wrestling Championships that was supposed to take place in New Delhi&nbsp;has now been moved out to Astana in Kazakhstan. The continent event, which was earlier slated for March 28th to April 2nd window in India's capital, will now be held from April 7th to 15th, the wrestling’s governing body said adding the final dates will be confirmed soon.

"UWW was forced to change the host of the continental championships due to the recent developments in Indian wrestling and a pending inquiry by the Indian sports ministry against the Wrestling Federation of India," the UWW said in a statement.

Meanwhile, early this year, several top wrestlers including Olympic champions in Sakshi Malik, Bajrang Punia and Vijay Dahiya among others protested at Jantar Mantar in Delhi alleging the WFI president, Brij Bhushan Sharan Singh along with other members of the committee for sexual misconducts on the female wrestlers over a long time.&nbsp;More so that the decorated female wrestler Vinesh Phogat and others also alleged that Brij had actually threatened them and they also raised fingers on the mismanagement by wrestling’s top body in India.

Acting immediately on this, the former BCCI president Anurag Thakur-led ministry held a meeting with the wrestlers assuring strict actions against the accused pending further investigation into the matter.

As a result, Brij Bhushan was sacked from his position then and there while a new committee was formed on January 23rd, chaired by former Olympic medalist Mary Kom to inquire the allegations laid by the wrestlers and were asked to submit a report within four weeks. Later, on past Thursday, the committee extended the deadline by further two weeks.

In the past,&nbsp;Astana in Kazakhstan also hosted the 2019 World Championships in addition to hosting the Asian Championships in 2021.

"With an effort to safeguard the interest of athletes, following complaints by wrestlers of sexual harassment by the President, other officials and coaches of the Wrestling Federation of India, and to promote good governance in WFI following allegations of financial mismanagement and arbitrariness by athletes, the Ministry of Sports has formed an Oversight Committee to enquire into the allegations of sexual misconduct, harassment and/intimidation, financial irregularities and administrative lapses, levelled by prominent sportspersons," a SAI statement read.

Mary Kom-led five-member oversight committee to probe into sexual allegations on WFI chief

Following an announcement that a new oversight committee will be formed that will probe into this matter, accused Wrestling Federation of India (WFI) chief and BJP MP Brij Bhushan Sharan Singh will step aside from his post till the investigation is completed, Anurag Thakur - Union Sports Minister informed the media on late Saturday night. Anurag also promised the wrestlers that their grievances will be heard after which the star grapplers decided to call off the protest that began on Wednesday at Jantar Mantar in New Delhi.

While the names of the members of the committee will be announced soon, Thakur said the committee will complete its investigation within four weeks.

"It has been decided that an oversight committee will be formed. Names for which will be announced tomorrow. The committee will complete its investigation within four weeks. The wrestlers put forward their demands. I have assured them that appropriate steps will be taken. All allegations of sexual harassment and financial misappropriation will be probed," Thakur said in a press conference on Saturday.

"Till the investigation is over, he (Singh) will step aside and co-operate with the investigation and the oversight committee will run the day-to-day affairs of WFI," Thakur added.

Olympic medalists Bajrang Punia and Sakshi Malik alongside&nbsp;World Championship medalist Vinesh Phogat were among the few big names who were part of the protest&nbsp;as they accused Brij and other members of WFI of sexual misconduct on female players over the past year or so. Punia, who was leading the protest thanked Anurag Thakur for providing assurance that steps against the accused will be taken.

"We have received assurances from the respected minister. I thank you. We protested only as a last resort. Prime Minister Narendra Modi has really helped our game," Punia said.

He also said that till then Brij Bhushan will have to step aside from his position. On Thursday, several ace wrestlers of the country including Phogat, Mallik and Bajrang Punia participated in the sit-in protest at Jantar Mantar in the national capital, which began on Wednesday. The wrestlers have levelled charges of sexual harassment of women wrestlers by the WFI president and coaches and of mismanagement in the functioning of the federation. They demanded a complete overhaul of the federation.

Indian wrestler and Commonwealth Games medalist&nbsp;Vinesh Phogat on the first day of protest on Wednesday alleged that coaches who are favourites of the Wrestling Federation of India (WFI) misbehave with women and harass them. She also accused the wrestling federation chief Brij Bhushan Sharan Singh of sexually harassing girls and calling her a ‘khota sikka’ after her defeat at Tokyo Olympics 2020.

On the sidelines of a sit-in protest against the WFI near Delhi`s Jantar Mantar, Phogat on Wednesday said, "Coaches are harassing women and some coaches, who are favourites of the federation, misbehave with women coaches as well. They sexually harass girls. The WFI president has sexually harassed many girls."

However, the WFI chief refuted the charges of sexual assault allegations made by the wrestlers against him. Denying the sexual assault claims by the wrestlers, Singh said, "I read that the name of the chief coach has also been taken in sexual assault allegations. I also read that the reason for the players` camp being held in Lucknow is so that they can be called at my home. I do have a home in Lucknow but I hardly reside there. My home is 120-130km&nbsp;away from Lucknow. All the sexual harassment allegations are false and I will commit suicide if they are found to be true. I tried to get in touch with the wrestlers, including Bajrang Punia but was unable to do so."

Meanwhile, some wrestlers also had a meeting with Union Sports Minister Anurag Thakur late last night on the issue that stretched into the early hours of Friday. Later in the day, under pressure to resign from his position over allegations of sexual exploitation of women wrestlers, WFI chairman Singh said he will "expose" the "political conspiracy" on Friday afternoon in a press conference.

Singh, who is also a BJP Lok Sabha MP from Kaiserganj in Uttar Pradesh, in a Facebook post said that he will hold a press conference at the Wrestling Training Centre in Nawabganj in Gonda district of the state.

Olympic silver medallist Ravi Dahiya wants to have the Arjuna Award before the Major Dhyan Chand Khel Ratna Award, the Wrestling Federation of India (WFI) has said.

Indian athletes Neeraj Chopra, Ravi Dahiya and Lovlina Borgohain are set to be awarded the Major Dhyan Chand Khel Ratna Award.

However, Ravi has shown his discomfort as he got automatically nominated for Khel Ratna Award despite filing his nomination for Arjuna Award.

"This is wrong with Ravi as he won a medal in Olympic but we have full faith that he will change the colour of a medal in gold at 2024 Olympics and when he himself wants Arjuna Award then why authorities are on to giving him Khel Ratna award," A WFI official told ANI.
