West Indies fast bowler Shannon Gabriel was Wednesday suspended for four one-day internationals after breaching the International Cricket Council's code of conduct over comments made to England's Joe Root.

Gabriel has been fined 75 percent of his match fee for the incident during the third Test in St Lucia and handed three demerit points, taking his total to eight within a 24-month period.

The nature of the paceman's words is not known but England captain Root was picked up on stump microphones telling Gabriel: "Don't use it as an insult. There's nothing wrong with being gay."

A statement from the ICC said: "During the third day of the St Lucia Test against England on Monday, Gabriel was found guilty of breaching article 2.13 of the ICC code of conduct... which relates to "personal abuse of a player, player support personnel, umpire or match referee during an international match", following an incident with Root.

"Gabriel admitted the offence after the end of the match on Tuesday and accepted the sanction."

West Indies won the Test series against England 2-1.

Root received praise for his response to Gabriel, made in the process of compiling a century, with fellow sportsmen, politicians and LGBT equality charity Stonewall all applauding his stance.

Gabriel, 30, already had five demerit points against his name for two earlier incidents. With the addition of the latest three demerit points, he has reached the threshold of eight demerit points, converted into four suspension points.

Four suspension points equate to a ban from two Tests or four ODIs/Twenty20 internationals, whichever come first for the player.

Gabriel was in November suspended from a Test in Bangladesh when he reached the threshold of four demerit points.

The five-match one-day series starts in Barbados on February 20.

West Indies bowler Shannon Gabriel suspended after Joe Root exchange

West Indies fast bowler Shannon Gabriel has apologised to England captain Joe Root for his <a href="http://www.wionews.com/sports/west-indies-bowler-shannon-gabriel-suspended-after-joe-root-exchange-197321">comments during the third Test</a> against England in St Lucia.&nbsp;

Gabriel extended an "unreserved apology" to clear the air over what he said to Root. He said there were no hard feelings between him and Root and that he saw this incident as an opportunity to recognise the "need for sensitivity and respect in their interactions with all".&nbsp;

"I know now that it was offensive and for that I am deeply sorry," Gabriel said in a statement.&nbsp;

"To my team-mates and members of the England team, especially their captain Joe Root, I extend an unreserved apology for a comment which in the context of on-the-field rivalry, I assumed was inoffensive sporting banter."&nbsp;

"The exchange occurred during a tense moment on the field," Gabriel explained in a written statement.&nbsp;

"The pressure was on and England's captain Joe Root was looking at me intensely as I prepared to bowl, which may have been the usual psychological strategy with which all test cricketers are familiar.&nbsp;

"I recognise now that I was attempting to break through my own tension when I said to Joe Root: 'Why are you smiling at me? Do you like boys?'&nbsp;

"His response, which was picked up by the microphone, was: 'Don't use it as an insult. There's nothing wrong with being gay.' I then responded: 'I have no issues with that, but you should stop smiling at me.'"&nbsp;

The 30-year-old Gabriel had accepted a charge for breaching the International Cricket Council's code of conduct. He was banned for the first four One-Day Internationals against England that begin on Wednesday.&nbsp;

West Indies opener Kraigg Brathwaite will lead the team in place of the suspended Jason Holder in the third and final Test against England starting in St Lucia on Saturday.&nbsp;

Holder was banned by the International Cricket Council (ICC) because of his team's slow over-rate during the second match in Antigua. The host&nbsp;won by 10 wickets to take an unassailable 2-0 lead in the series.

Brathwaite previously skippered West Indies in their series defeat by Bangladesh in November when Holder was injured.

"With Jason Holder missing out on the last test, Kraigg Brathwaite will take the reins of captaincy," chairman of selectors, Courtney Browne said.

The selectors added pacer Keemo Paul to the 14-member squad while Alzarri Joseph, whose mother died during the second test, was also included.

"Our heartfelt condolences to Alzarri and his family on the passing of his mother. His heroics in the test were outstanding and shows a player of great character," Browne added.

"We also welcome Keemo Paul back to the squad. He's having a good showing in the West Indies first-class championship."

Roston Chase, who engineered <a href="http://www.wionews.com/sports/engvswi-part-time-spinner-roston-chase-stars-as-windies-beat-england-193095">West Indies' demolition of England in the first Test</a> on Saturday, started his second-innings bowling spell to give the team's pace quartet a breather as much as anything.

A few hours later he had joined an elite list of West Indies' bowlers with eight wickets or more.

Chase did not extract a great deal of turn from the Kensington Oval pitch in Barbados, but flighted the ball beautifully and, aided by some poor England batting, emerged with the figures of eight for 60.

"Looking at the wicket, I always thought I would come into play in the second innings," he told reporters.

With the home team having opted for a line-up lacking a specialist spinner, captain Jason Holder had few options other than to use Chase, a batting all-rounder who entered the match with a Test bowling average of more than 40.

"The quicks set it up for us in the first innings and (spin bowling coach Mushtaq Ahmed) told me I'm going to have to bowl 25 overs in the second innings, to get my mind ready for it, so I was always prepared to do some work, to give the pacers a rest," he said.

"I started to pick up some wickets and it went from there," said Barbados-born Chase, 26.

"I just tried to be consistent and land it my areas, despite what the batsmen were doing, put some revs on the ball and vary my pace a bit."

Australia dethroned the West Indies and booked a place in Saturday's Women's World Twenty20 final with a crushing 71-run victory in the first semi-final on Thursday at the Sir Vivian Richards Stadium in Antigua.

Stunned by the Caribbean side in 2016 final in Kolkata, the three-time champions were at their most ruthless to the dismay of a huge home crowd as they reached 142 for five batting first on a turgid pitch and then routed the West Indies for just 71 off 17.3 overs.

Australia will face the winner of the second semi-final between England and India, being played later on Thursday, in Saturday's championship match at the same venue.

Put in to bat on a pitch where the experienced three-time former champions found free scoring difficult, the Aussies were indebted again to the prolific Alyssa Healy, the opening batter topscoring with 46 to earn her fourth 'Player of the Match' award in five games so far in this tournament.

She had passed a late fitness test after sustaining a concussion in the field during their last group match against India in Guyana five days earlier.

Healy and captain Meg Lanning produced the best partnership of the innings, putting on 51 for the second wicket.

After Healy fell to leg-spinner Afy Fletcher and Lanning was bowled by all-rounder Deandra Dottin, Rachael Haynes struck a flurry of boundaries to reach an unbeaten 25 off 15 balls to give her side a fighting chance against the title-holders.

She was particularly harsh on Dottin, who despite claiming the important wicket of Lanning, conceded 23 runs off two overs at the end of the innings.

West Indian hopes of a strong reply evaporated in the early overs of their innings with openers Hayley Matthews and Dottin dismissed cheaply.

Matthews was run out by wicketkeeper Healy while champion seamer Ellyse Perry accounted for Dottin, adding the scalp of Shemaine Campbelle to finish with the outstanding figures of two for two from two overs.

She was not required by Lanning to return to the attack as the rest of the West Indies batting folded meekly, only captain Stafanie Taylor (16) getting into double-figures as all the bowlers shared in the rout, with seamer Delissa Kimmince and spinner Ashleigh Gardner also taking two wickets each.

Wrist spinner Kuldeep Yadav (3/13) led the Indian bowlers' fine show to restrict West Indies to 109 for eight after the stand-in skipper opted to field.

For the Windies, skipper Carlos Brathwaite and Oshane Thomas picked up two wickets apiece in impressive spells.

"Oshane Thomas is a really exciting talent. If he bowls in good areas, it's not going to be easy for batsmen to counter it. The advantage of height gives him that extra edge. Wish him the best in the future but not against us," India said of the West Indian pacer.&nbsp;

Sharma also lavished praise on debutants Krunal and Khaleel Ahmed.

"These guys are ready to take those challenges. Exciting for the captain when you see that. If they continue to work on their skills, India's going to benefit for sure."

Brathwaite said they didn't apply themselves.

"We never got into second or third gear... Were either too defensive or too attacking. Can see the way Keemo (Paul) and (Fabian) Allen finished, if we had wickets in hand we would've got 130-140 which would've probably been a winning score."

It was at this ground that Brathwaite hit four sixes in an over to help WI win the World T20 two years ago.

On the promising Oshane Thomas, the captain said, "Don't know what the long-term plans will be from the selection panel. He's at the best place he could be. Hope he gets fitter, gets stronger. Continues to bowl rapid.&nbsp;

"For him, the world is at his feet. We will try to guide him as well as we can. Ultimately it's up to us, the Windies cricket system, to pull him along and create what would be another Joel Garner or Michael Holding."

Man of the Match Kuldeep said, "Sometimes wicket happens, sometimes it doesn't. But that's my aim. The first wicket (of Darren Bravo) was the one I cherished. It's the ball I'm working on (faster one). Just bowl it to contain runs as well."

Speaking after the toss, Holder said, " &nbsp;It looks a very good wicket and looks a bit dry as well. Hopefully we will get some runs on the board and our bowlers would go out there and defend it. We have made two changes. Ashley Nurse is out and Devendra Bishoo comes in and Chanderpaul Hemraj is out and Oshane Thomas comes in."

"He (Nurse) is ruled out for the entire tour. I wish him well. Hopefully, he can recover quickly for the next tour. I think it it is about consistency. We just need to be more consistent to beat the best teams. We have given glimpses of that in this series," he added.

"Our batters will have to put runs on the board and the bowlers will have back to them up and support them, the skipper concluded.&nbsp;

India, on the other hand, are unchanged for the match. Speaking about their strategy for today, skipper Virat Kohli said, " We would have bowled first as well. I don't think the wicket will change much but the dew is going to be a massive factor in the second innings. It has been overcast for the last few days and there would be something in the wicket for the few overs."

"If it is too damp or too dry, the spinners will also come into play and there will be some spin. We are playing with the same team," Kohli concluded.

India are currently leading the series 2-1, after the third match ended in a tie.&nbsp;

Opener Rohit Sharma slammed a brilliant century to lift India after they lost skipper Virat Kohli for early in the 4th ODI in Mumbai. He departed after making 162 runs while Rayudu&nbsp;slammed his 3rd ODI hundred today, against West Indies.&nbsp;

IND vs WI, 3rd ODI: West Indies are 283-9 after 50 overs

India's wicket-keeper batsman MS Dhoni took a stunning catch&nbsp;in the <a href="http://www.wionews.com/sports/ind-vs-wi-3rd-odi-virat-kohli-opts-to-bowl-against-west-indies-173797">third one-day</a> of a five-match series between India and West Indies on Saturday.

The world cup winning captain displayed a sensational piece of fielding&nbsp;to dismiss Chandrapaul Hemraj at a score of 21.

Hemraj edged Jasprit Bumrah's fair delivery that went up high in the air and was about to land in front of&nbsp;fine leg where no fielder was present.

MS Dhoni ran towards it, made a full stretched dive and landed horizontally on the ground to take the stunning catch.

Though on-field umpire referred it to the third umpire to check whether the catch was clean or not.

But a&nbsp;red light on the big screen signalled&nbsp;that&nbsp;it is difficult to doubt Dhoni's fitness and fielding skills.

The crowd at Pune's Maharashtra Cricket Association Stadium applauded the superman-like catch&nbsp;with 'Dhoni, Dhoni' chants.

Mahendra Singh Dhoni has been dropped from India's Twenty20 squad for the home series against the West Indies and the crucial away assignment against Australia, signaling a possible end to his run in the shortest format.

The committee said that Dhoni, the 2007 World T20-winning skipper, has been "rested" and India is now looking to fill in the second wicketkeeper's slot.&nbsp;

But when asked if Dhoni's career in T20s is over, Prasad said, "Not yet".

"We want to try out other keepers for the second keeper's slot," said Prasad.

Watch: MS Dhoni's superman-like catch to dismiss Chandrapaul Hemraj in 3rd ODI against West Indies

Mahendra Singh Dhoni was on Friday dropped from India's Twenty20 squad for the home series against the West Indies and the crucial away assignment against Australia, signaling a possible end to his run in the shortest format.

In the other major decision, skipper Virat Kohli was rested from the T20 series against the West Indies and Rohit Sharma named the stand-in captain of the side after a late-evening meeting of the MSK Prasad-led selection committee here.

The committee said that Dhoni, the 2007 World T20-winning skipper, has been "rested" and India is now looking to fill in the second wicketkeeper's slot.&nbsp;

But when asked if Dhoni's career in T20s is over, Prasad said, "Not yet".

"We want to try out other keepers for the second keeper's slot," said Prasad.

The two keepers in the two T20 squads announced Friday are Rishabh Pant and Dinesh Karthik. The three T20s against Australia will get underway from November 21, followed by a four-Test series and three ODIs.&nbsp;

With Dhoni playing only seven T20Is this year and India's next ODI assignment only in January against Australia, the former captain won't be getting any domestic matches with both Vijay Hazare and Deodhar Trophy already over.

The 37-year-old, despite being a sharp planner and a safe and agile hand behind the stumps, has been struggling to finish matches with the bat, something that came naturally to him at his peak and made him a modern legend.&nbsp;

The decision to "rest" Dhoni might just be the first sign of selectors trying to phase out the maverick former captain in at least one format. A veteran of 93 T20Is, Dhoni has 1487 runs in the format at a strike rate of 127.09.&nbsp;

The only T20Is left in the next six months is a three-game series against New Zealand, which is scheduled in February.

In some of the other decisions, Murali Vijay has been brought back in the Test squad for Australia along with the fit-again Ishant Sharma.

"Vijay went back and performed and considering the intensity of the series we have brought him," Prasad said.

Rohit Sharma has been included as an additional batsman in the Test squad and he makes a comeback after being dropped for indifferent form in South Africa.

"With regards to Rohit, he is a good back-foot player and his game is much suited in Australia," said Prasad.
Another significant comeback in the Test side is Parthiv Patel as the second keeper alongside Pant.

"Parthiv was not picked for Afghanistan Test and subsequent England series. He played the Duleep Trophy and whatever matches that happened, he batted well. It's an intensive series (in Australia) and we have called him back," reasoned the chairman.

In the limited-overs set-up, left-arm spinner Shahbaz Nadeem received his maiden call-up for the T20s against West Indies.

Fit-again batsman Kedar Jadhav, whose omission from ODIs came under the scanner, has been brought back for the fourth and fifth ODI.

The BCCI has also selected Vijay, Ajinkya Rahane, Hanuma Vihari, Parthiv Patel, Prithvi Shaw for India A tour of New Zealand.

The Squads:&nbsp;

For three T20I match series against West Indies: Rohit Sharma (C), Shikhar Dhawan, KL Rahul, Dinesh Karthik, Manish Pandey, Shreyas Iyer, Rishabh Pant (wk), Krunal Pandya, Washington Sundar, Yuzvendra Chahal, Kuldeep Yadav, Bhuvneshwar Kumar, Jasprit Bumrah, Khaleel Ahmed, Umesh Yadav, Shahbaz Nadeem. For four-match Test series against Australia: Virat Kohli (C), M Vijay, KL Rahul, Prithvi Shaw, Cheteshwar Pujara, Ajinkya Rahane, Hanuma Vihari, Rohit Sharma, Rishabh Pant, Parthiv Patel, R Ashwin, Ravindra Jadeja, Kuldeep Yadav, Mohammed Shami, Ishant, Umesh Yadav, Jasprit Bumrah, Bhuvneshwar Kumar. BCCI announce India's T20 squads for WI and Australia series, MS Dhoni dropped

West Indies all-rounder Dwayne Bravo on Thursday announced his retirement from international cricket with immediate effect, bringing an end to a 14-year long career.

The 35-year-old, however, will continue to play T20 franchise cricket around the world.

The Trinidadian cricketer, who made his debut for the Windies in 2004, played 40 Tests, 164 one-day internationals (ODI) and 66 Twenty20 internationals (T20I).&nbsp;

But he made his last international appearance for the national team more than two years ago, a T20I match against Pakistan in Abu Dhabi.

Announcing his decision through a media statement, Bravo stated&nbsp;
"Today I want to confirm to the cricket world that I have officially retired from international cricket in all formats of the game. After 14 years when I made my debut for the West Indies, I still remember that moment I received the maroon cap before walking onto the Lords Cricket Ground against England in July 2004. The enthusiasm and passion I felt then, I have kept with me throughout my career."&nbsp;

"However, I must accept that for me to preserve my longevity as a professional cricketer, I must do as others before have done, leave the international arena for the next generation of players."

"I thank the countless persons who were instrumental to my success, particularly my family and QPCC where I developed my skills at an early age," Bravo said.&nbsp;

"I thank the many loyal fans who continue to support my journey and who recognize my efforts on and off the field. I am extremely fortunate to have a career that has taken me across the globe into the most prestigious dressing rooms sharing experiences with all the recent legends of this glorious game. I will continue my professional career as a cricketer and entertainer living as a true champion," he concluded.&nbsp;

The former captain ends his career with 2,200 runs and 86 wickets in Tests; 2,968 ODI runs and 199 wickets; and 1,142 runs and 52 wickets in T20I cricket.

Virat Kohli breaks Tendulkar's record, becomes fastest cricketer to score 10,000 ODI runs

Indian skipper Virat kohli won the toss and opted to bat against West Indies in the 2nd ODI at Dr. Y.S. Rajasekhara Reddy ACA-VDCA Cricket Stadium, Visakhapatnam.

Speaking after the toss, Kohli said, "Looks like a nice and hard wicket. May be it will get slower in the second half. Because of our bowling combination, we want to put up a score on the board and ask them to chase it down."&nbsp;

"Kuldeep comes in for Khaleel and that the only change from the last game. It gives us two wrist spinners in the middle overs and ask the batsmen to come hard at us," he added.

India registered a comfortable eight-wicket over the Jason Holder's side, despite a mammoth target of 323 runs set by the Windies.

Speaking about their strategy for today, Windies skipper Holder said, " &nbsp;\Not to disappointed to be bowling first. Seems to be a good track. It should hold up for the 100 overs. Looks drier than the last pitch and I just hope that it stays together. It would be for the batters to take it deep. In a run chase, the batters have to be clinical."

"But up first, the bowlers will have to do the job. We have one change as Obed McCoy is making his debut and comes in for Oshane Thomas," he added.

Ind vs Windies: Kohli elects to bat in 2nd ODI, Kuldeep Yadav included in playing XI

The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) on Tuesday named the 12-member Indian squad for the second One-Day International (ODI) against the West Indies.

The cricket board decided to keep the team unchanged for the match that will take place in Visakhapatnam on Wednesday.&nbsp;

India is expected to enter the pitch with three fast bowlers, meaning it will again keep spinner Kuldeep Yadav out of the playing XI.&nbsp;

However, Yadav might get a chance keeping in mind Mohammed Shami's expensive figures, where he gave away 81 runs in his ten overs.&nbsp;

Ravindra Jadeja, Umesh Yadav and Khaleel Ahmed were also expensive.
