Big revelations continue to tumble out of former Pakistan cricketer Wasim Akram's soon-to-be-released autobiography titled, "Sultan: A Memoir". In the latest excerpt from the book, the speedster said that the current chairman of Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) and his teammate Ramiz Raja benefitted on the field due to his father's reputation.

Akram recalled a Test match against New Zealand where Raja received preferential treatment because his father was a police commissioner. However, despite receiving the benefit, Raja's performance was not up to par.&nbsp;

“The first over the next day was delivered by Asif Faridi, a local quick; I was thrown the new ball for the second. I was in my fourth over when John Wright, New Zealand's captain, nicked to Ramiz at second slip. For all his batting kill, Ramiz was at slip for reasons of rank, because his father was a commissioner and because he'd attended Aitchison College," Akram wrote in the book.

"He [Raja] dropped more than he caught, frankly,” added Akram.&nbsp;

The autobiography also sheds light on several other controversial aspects of his career and personal life. Akram has admitted to having a drug addiction and that it was in England that he first snorted a line of cocaine.&nbsp;

"Worst of all, I developed a dependence on cocaine. It started innocuously enough when I was offered a line at a party in England; my use grew steadily more serious, to the point that I felt I needed it to function."

The left-arm pacer added that he was angry at&nbsp;Tahir, Mohsin, Shoaib Mohammad as well as Ramiz Raja for taking him to the nightclubs.&nbsp;

But I have not seen any other team do it in this World Cup? So yeah, the urge to get extra numbers (followers, likes), cut it down. This is too much," Akram said on A-Sports.

"There are recordings taking place all the time. Imagine if I am sitting and not knowing that someone is recording - a message that I want to give my team. Just tell him, 'Guys, relax for two days. Do it some other place but not dressing room," he further pointed out.

The addiction started taking a toll on his body and personal life but the damage had already been done and Akram admitted it reached a point where it felt he needed to consume cocaine to function. It was only after the death of his former wife Huma that Akram decided to quit and change his life for the good.

Pakistan's highest wicket-taker in international cricket with over 900 scalps to his name, Akram has bared it all about his addiction in his book which also touches upon the infamous match-fixing saga involving him. Opening up on his dependence on cocaine, Akram revealed how it started and affected his life.

"I liked to indulge myself; I liked to party. The culture of fame in south Asia is all consuming, seductive and corrupting. You can go to 10&nbsp;parties a night.&nbsp;And it took its toll on me. My devices turned into vices,"&nbsp;Akram has written in his book, as per excerpts published by The Times.

"Huma eventually found me out, discovering a packet of cocaine in my wallet . . . ‘You need help.’ I agreed. It was getting out of hand. I couldn’t control it. One line would become two, two would become four; four would become a gram, a gram would become two. I could not sleep. I could not eat. I grew inattentive to my diabetes, which caused me headaches and mood swings. Like a lot of addicts, part of me welcomed discovery: the secrecy had been exhausting," Akram writes.

Rehab didn't help Wasim Akram

Akram was struggling to get control of his life with his drug addiction becoming unbearable. The Pakistan legend revealed he eventually agreed to go into rehab, however, the experience made him return to his old habits soon.&nbsp;

The former Pakistan cricketer said the doctor who was treating him at the rehab was a complete 'con man' whose primary motive was to milk money out of the families of his patients. Akram said the treatment made him gain weight and he felt like a 'zombie', who wanted to get out of rehab soon.

"Movies conjure up an image of rehab as a caring, nurturing environment. This facility was brutal: a bare building with five cells, a meeting room and a kitchen. The doctor was a complete con man, who worked primarily on manipulating families rather than treating patients, on separating relatives from money rather than users from drugs.

"The treatment was essentially sedation, with fistfuls of tablets to take in the morning and evening, coupled with lectures and prayer. I felt lethargic. I gained weight. For an hour a day I wandered round our little exercise yard like a zombie... I screamed at my wife. ‘I’ve got to get out of here'," Akram writes in his book.

The former Pakistan pacer started taking drugs again when he returned to England on commentary duties for the Champions Trophy in 2009, away from the watchful eyes of his wife.

"It was horrible. That scarred me for a bit . . . when people keep you against your will that pisses you off," Akram writes describing his experience in rehab.

"Try as I might, part of me was still smouldering inside about the indignity of what I’d been put through. My pride was hurt, and the lure of my lifestyle remained. I briefly contemplated divorce. I settled for heading to the 2009 ICC Champions Trophy where, out from under Huma’s daily scrutiny, I started using again, he says about his return to old habits.

The turning point&nbsp;

"Sometimes, as a captain and as a leader, you leave your spot and say, Haider, if it is not working out for you in the middle order, I will give you the easier spot (opening) and we never tried that out, and that is why we are suffering. And we also lose because of the way they score runs. To become No.1 and No. 2 (in T20I rankings) is not a big deal, the important thing is to win after scoring those runs,"&nbsp;he added.

Rizwan managed 55 runs off 49 balls at a strike rate of 112.24 which cost Pakistan the game as they fell short in the run chase. Among those who were critical of Rizwan's approach was the legendary Wasim Akram as he bashed the opening batter for his slow scoring rate.

Akram pointed out Rizwan had batted similarly against Hong Kong earlier in the tournament and revealed he was attacked on social media by fans for calling out the Pakistan batter over his performance. On Wednesday (July 27), ICC chief executive George Allardice said the structuring of the game's three formats was part of the discussion&nbsp;at the governing body's annual general meeting in Birmingham, where the Future Tours Programme (FTP) 2023-27 got finalised.

"I think at this stage there is some discussion, not specifically about ODIs, but about the mix of formats within the calendar," Allardice said in a video conference as per a report in Sky Sports. "Countries have been, in their FTPs, are still scheduling a healthy number of ODIs as well."

"Each of them has to manage that balance between domestic competitions, their international schedule and the management of their players. Each of those boards is in a slightly different situation. So there isn't a one-size-fits-all approach to that balancing issue," he added.

Recently, former Indian head coach Ravi Shastri said on Fan Code, "There is no harm in shortening the span of the game. When one-day cricket started, it was of 60 overs. When we won the World Cup in 1983, it was of 60 overs. After that, people thought that 60 overs were a bit too long. People found that span of overs between 20 to 40 hard to digest. So they reduced it from 60 to 50."

Former Pakistan captain Wasim Akram has slammed the Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) and its chief Ramiz Raja for the poor quality of the pitches in the ongoing Test series between Pakistan and Australia. The pitches used so far in the three-match series have been under the scanner for being too flat and assisting the batters.&nbsp;

The pitch used in the first Test between Pakistan and Australia in Rawalpindi was criticised by many as only 14 wickets fell over the course of five days. The International Cricket Council (ICC) later rated the pitch below-par with several former cricketers also lashing out at the PCB for the poor quality of the track.

Former Pakistan skipper Akram too aimed a dig at the PCB chief over the poor quality of pitches in Pakistan and said he knew the Rawalpindi Test was going to end in a draw after just two deliveries were bowled in the match. Akram said during his playing days only the captain decided what sort of pitches were required by the team and no president used to interfere in such matters.

“During our time it only depended on what kind of pitch the captain wanted, I don't remember any chairman or any official asking us that the pitch should be prepared in a particular way. These two Test matches I tried to watch it but I couldn't," Arkam said while speaking at an event.

"They were the favourites to win the World Cup. And I suppose after the first game… after especially Shaheen Afridi's first over, they never could recover. Then you see, there were a lot of talks about they concentrate on the IPL a lot more," Akram said in a video uploaded by Sport360.

"Their players don't play against international players as much in the other league. And probably they were right at times because very few have faced – Pakistan and India have hardly played cricket – very few have faced Shaheen, Haris Rauf or Hasan Ali," he asserted.

He added, "When you play leagues in different countries – one or two, I’m not saying play every league – at least your players get the experience to play against the other bowlers, different pitches, different teams, different conditions. So I think they (India) have to think back… IPL is the number 1 league, yes, money-wise, talent-wise but they have to allow the players at least one or two more leagues worldwide."

After the T20 WC, India have had several changes in their setup. Kohli resigned as the T20 captain -- as he had already mentioned before the mega tournament -- whereas BCCI named Rohit Sharma as the limited-overs captain in early December, sacking Kohli as the ODI skipper.
