In a bid to bolster war-torn Ukraine's "immediate battlefield needs and longer-term security assistance requirements", the United States's Department of Defense (DoD) on Monday (August 14th) announced a new arms and equipment aid package valued at around $200 million to help "Ukrainian armed forces in the fight to defend their country's sovereignty, territory, and people."

Continuing aid

As per the US Defence website, this latest instalment is the 44th "tranche of equipment to be provided from DoD inventories for Ukraine since August 2021."

"The United States will continue to work with its Allies and partners to provide Ukraine with capabilities to meet its immediate battlefield needs and longer-term security assistance requirements," says a statement on the Department of Defense website.

The aid package, which includes additional air defence munitions, artillery and tank ammunition, anti-armour weapons, and other equipment, will help Ukraine fortify its defensive capabilities on multiple fronts and "counter Russia's ongoing war of aggression."

It comes as the Russia-Ukraine war crosses the 535-day mark. Announcing the aid package on X, formerly Twitter, US Secretary of State Antony Blinken said: "Today we are announcing deliveries of $200 million worth of arms and equipment for Ukraine. US allocates arms worth $200 million to help Ukraine counter 'Russia's ongoing war of aggression'

Ukraine's authorities on Wednesday said they conducted a search at the home of a member of parliament, Yuriy Aristov, who allegedly violated war-time restrictions by going on holiday abroad for personal reasons.

Investigators found evidence suggesting that Aristov travelled to Lithuania initially for a work-related trip, but then allegedly faked sick leave to go on vacation in a luxurious hotel in the Maldives with his family.

A holiday amid war

According to the SBU security service, the Ukrainian minister disguised his travel as a "business trip," raising suspicions about his motives and actions.

The case came to light after a news report exposed the MP's travel, leading to strong reactions from Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky, who expressed vehement disapproval.

Condemning the behaviour, President Zelensky on Tuesday, said, "For some, it's about islands and resorts during the war, for others it's about lining one's pockets in the military enlistment office, for others it's about bribes in the courts."

He further emphasized that "any internal betrayal, any 'breach' or any personal enrichment instead of Ukraine's interests triggers fury," and would not be tolerated.

A case against the holidaying minister

Following the investigation, authorities have now opened a case against Yuriy Aristov, who also held the position of deputy chairman of the Committee on National Security, Defence, and Intelligence on charges of forgery.

The charge, as per news agency AFP report citing the State Bureau of Investigation, could result in a prison sentence of up to three years.

Ukraine MP faces investigation for allegedly faking sick leave to holiday abroad during wartime restrictions

Kremlin critic Alexei Navalny's aide has been imprisoned for nine years on "extremism" charges. On Monday, Navalny's organisation announced that Vadim Ostanin has been jailed in the latest case sidelining critics of Russian President Vladimir Putin.

Who is Vadim Ostanin?

Reuters reports that Ostanin was the head of opposition leader Navalny's office in Barnaul.

As per the jailed opposition leader's team, he carried out "legal political work".

Ostanin was detained in December 2021 and Navalny's team alleges that he was pressured by investigators to confess to being guilty. However, he refused.

AFP reports that he has now been sentenced in the Siberian city for "participating in an extremist" organisation. As Russia intensified its crackdown on people and organisations in dissent of the Russian President, Alexei Navalny's organisations were banned.

Ostanin, who is a trained lawyer, is now awaiting a verdict on the new "extremist" charges. If found guilty, he could see his jail term extended by another 20 years.

Russia's crackdown on Putin critics

Ever since the Russia-Ukraine war began with Russian President Vladimir Putin's announcement of a "special military operation" on February 24th, 2022, authorities in Moscow have clamped down heavily on any signs of dissent.

Taking the crackdown on freedom to a new level, as per AFP, Russia has shut down independent media and in 2021, as the crackdown intensified, Navalny's organisations were banned.

In a similar charge, earlier this month, Lilia Chanysheva, another ally of the jailed Kremlin critic, was sentenced to seven years and six months in prison. Chanysheva is the former coordinator of Navalny's headquarters in Ufa in central Russia.

This new case against the opposition leader comes amidst an escalated crackdown in Moscow, where over a year into the country's offensive in Ukraine, numerous key opposition figures, like Alexei Navalny, have been put behind bars or are in exile.

Rough treatment

Many jailed figures, including Navalny, have alleged that they're being kept in deplorable conditions. Ostanin too has described his detention in Barnaul as unsanitary, saying that there were insects and rodents like rats in his cell.

As per Navalny's team, Ostanin has lost some 15 kilogrammes (33 pounds) while in custody. He has allegedly also suffered from back and neck pain, and was denied access to medication for his ailments.

Talks to bring back Ukrainian children 'abducted' by Russia on since April: Report

Was it a Freudian slip? During a press briefing on Monday, the US State Department spokesperson made a controversial statement and claimed that the ongoing war between Russia and Ukraine has been a "strategic failure" for Ukraine.

Matthew Miller, the department's spokesperson, mistakenly made this assertion not once, but twice, before admitting that he was out of touch due to his absence from the podium for a week.

The gaffe

While holding the press briefing on Monday, Miller was asked about the 500 days of the ongoing war in Ukraine and the role of the United Nations' "almost 200 member nations" in the conflict.

In reply, Miller as per the transcript available on the US State Department Website said: "We believe the war has been a strategic failure for Ukraine. The Secretary [of State Antony Blinken] spoke to this in a speech he gave in Helsinki last month, I believe it was."

His gaffe was immediately pointed out, with a reporter asking him "A strategic failure for Russia or for Ukraine?".

Thanking the reporter for the correction, the spokesperson once again said that the strategic failure lies with Ukraine.

"I'm sorry, a – excuse me, a strategic failure for Ukraine. Thank you for the correction."

The slip of the tongue by the US State Department spokesperson has ignited a debate about the true nature of Ukraine's war with Russia and the US's role in it.

The controversy stemming from Miller's gaffe

Miller's blunder has quickly gained attention on Twitter. Users have begun questioning the US support for Ukraine and are suggesting that Miller's slip of the tongue revealed a deeper truth.

Some argue that despite the subsequent correction, the repeated mistake by Miller raises doubts about the US's stance on the conflict. A few Twitter users called for Miller's resignation and questioned the continued financial aid sent to Ukraine.

Biden administration's series of blunders

This incident, as per The Daily Caller, is just one in a series of blunders that have plagued the Biden administration.

President Joe Biden himself recently made an accidental revelation about the shortage of conventional artillery shells in the US military, which he said led to the decision to provide cluster munitions to Ukraine instead.

Speaking to CNN, the US president was defending his turnaround decision to provide deadly cluster munitions to Ukraine and said: "This is a war relating to munitions. And they're (Ukraine) running out of that ammunition, and we're low on it."

Additionally, Biden mistakenly claimed on two occasions within 24 hours that Russian President Vladimir Putin was "losing the war in Iraq" and had become "a bit of a pariah around the world."

The gaffe While holding the press briefing on Monday, Miller was asked about the 500 days of the ongoing war in Ukraine and the role of the United Nations' "almost 200 member nations" in the conflict. In reply, Miller as per the transcript available on the US State Department Website said: "We believe the war has been a strategic failure for Ukraine. The Secretary [of State Antony Blinken] spoke to this in a speech he gave in Helsinki last month, I believe it was." Also read | No timeframe for Ukraine's NATO membership despite Zelensky's scathing criticism of 'absurd' delays His gaffe was immediately pointed out, with a reporter asking him "A strategic failure for Russia or for Ukraine?". Thanking the reporter for the correction, the spokesperson once again said that the strategic failure lies with Ukraine. "I'm sorry, a – excuse me, a strategic failure for Ukraine. Thank you for the correction." Watch a video of the press briefing here: STATE DEPT. SPOX MILLER: "We believe the war has been a strategic failure for Ukraine..." The controversy stemming from Miller's gaffe Miller's blunder has quickly gained attention on Twitter. Users have begun questioning the US support for Ukraine and are suggesting that Miller's slip of the tongue revealed a deeper truth. Also read | Taliban leader praises Elon Musk and Twitter over Threads for 'freedom of speech' Some argue that despite the subsequent correction, the repeated mistake by Miller raises doubts about the US's stance on the conflict. A few Twitter users called for Miller's resignation and questioned the continued financial aid sent to Ukraine. Biden administration's series of blunders This incident, as per The Daily Caller, is just one in a series of blunders that have plagued the Biden administration. And they're (Ukraine) running out of that ammunition, and we're low on it." Additionally, Biden mistakenly claimed on two occasions within 24 hours that Russian President Vladimir Putin was "losing the war in Iraq" and had become "a bit of a pariah around the world."

Freudian slip? US official says, twice, war with Russia 'strategic failure' for Ukraine

India leaders have a unique voice to stand up for developing countries and the nation can play a unique role in resolving the Ukraine war, said Bridget Brink, the US ambassador to Ukraine on Wednesday.

Briefing a select number of journalists and 'thought leaders' on the 500 days of the Ukraine war, the road ahead and the economic impact, Brink said that America is committed to supporting Ukraine.

India's leadership and USA

Recalling Indian Prime Minister Narendra's remarks to Russian President Vladimir Putin, Brink said that "We agree to PM Narendra Modi's message - Now, is not the time of war."

In September of last year, speaking to the Russian leader on the sidelines of the SCO Heads of State Council summit in Uzbekistan, the Indian leader said that "I know today's time is not a time for war," and stressed the importance of "democracy and diplomacy and dialogue".

Talking about USA's commitment to supporting Ukraine, the ambassador said that nearly 20 per cent of Ukraine's territory remains occupied.

Ukraine and the Black Sea Grain Initiative

Speaking about the Black Sea Grain Initiative, Brink said that Ukraine is working hard to keep grain exports flowing to the world.

As per the ambassador, Russia is blocking tonnes of grain, which is further exacerbating food prices globally.

"I have been to Black Sea Ports where ships loaded with thousands of tonnes of grains are blocked by Russia from sailing to markets to lower the food price in the world," she said.

Brink further remarked that she has witnessed Kyiv's attempts "to expand Black Sea Grain Initiative" and said that the USA is supporting the nation in this.

She further quoted the World Food Programme and said that globally, "345 million people are facing high levels of food insecurity," the majority of whom are in Africa and the Middle East.

"Ukraine food exports are vital to the world economy," she said.

Brink said that Russia also benefits from these Black Sea initiatives.

"Its grain exports are now at in some cases above pre-war level and yet Russia is slowing inspection of ships and threatening to withdraw from the initiative after July 18 as the initiative became more important than ever," she said.

India's role

As per the US ambassador, Indian leadership can play an important role here.

"India leaders have a unique voice to stand up for developing countries and the expansion of the Black Sea Initiative," said Brink.

The diplomat said that New Delhi and Washington share ideals of freedom and democracy and that India understands the importance of freedom and territorial integrity.

She further added that Indian leaders have spoken about these principles in terms of the threat posed by neighbouring countries with rising ambitions and no respect for territorial integrity.

"India's aspirations of global leadership reflect the spirit needed for a just system," she said, adding that the nation's aspiration for global leadership is evident through its G20 theme "One Earth, One Family, One Future".

India's 'unique voice' key to resolving Ukraine conflict, says US ambassador to Kyiv

The Russia-Ukraine war is well into its second year and the man credited for the death and destruction is the nation's President Vladimir Putin. Amid international condemnation triggered by the conflict, on Tuesday, the Kremlin released a video that seems to be designed to portray the leader as caring and concerned.

In the video, President Putin is joined by an eight-year-old Russian girl seeking a budget grant from Russian Finance Minister Anton Siluanov.

Released in the aftermath of last month's brief armed mutiny, the video, as per Reuters, also attempts to show that Putin remains in control.

A bizarre call

The video which was released by the Kremlin shows Putin welcoming the girl, eight-year-old Raisat Akipova. It featured a bizarre call, in which the child asks the Russian finance minister for a grant for her home region of Dagestan, which is situated in Russia's North Caucasus.

As per Reuters, initially, Anton Siluanov seemed bemused by the girl's demands and failed to respond to her greetings. However, he soon agrees to extra funding of five billion roubles for her home region in Russia's south.

"Excellent!" responded the Russian President. He then tells the girl: "We've got five billion roubles for Dagestan". Five billion roubles is around 55.6 million USD.

A similar call was placed to Prime Minister Mikhail Mishustin. The video shows Putin chuckling with amusement during the conversations.

Later, the little girl holding a bouquet of flowers thanked Siluanov when prompted by the Russian president.

Reuters reports that Putin told Raisat that he had invited her and her parents to Moscow because a picture of her in tears after failing to see him on his Dagestan trip had distressed the leader.

Kremlin shares video of Putin with a young fan, attempts to repaint Russian President as 'caring'

Ukraine has added British consumer goods company Unilever to its "International Sponsors of War" list, alleging that the company continues to profit from its operations in Russia. The move has led to demonstrations outside Unilever's London headquarters.

What Kyiv alleges

"The National Agency on Corruption Prevention has added British company Unilever onto its list of 'International Sponsors of War'," said a statement.

The agency stated that Unilever's presence in Russia and its significant tax contributions to the Russian state budget support the aggressor country's economy and contribute to Russia's ongoing war against Ukraine.

Unilever's addition to the list is because of its "presence in the Russian Federation and its significant taxes to the Russian state budget," and "thereby supporting the aggressor's economy and contributing to the continuation of Russia's war against Ukraine," it said.

In addition to Unilever, the campaign group Global Witness accused French energy giant TotalEnergies and British company Shell of continuing to profit from Russian gas. Both companies responded to the claims by stating that contractual obligations bind them but have terminated partnerships in Russia following the country's invasion last year.

The company's response

Unilever, known for brands such as Dove soap, Magnum ice cream, and Cif surface cleaner, reiterated a statement made in February in which it condemned the war in Ukraine as a "brutal and senseless act by the Russian state".

The company claimed to have ceased imports and exports of its goods into and out of Russia.

However, Unilever acknowledged that it supplies everyday food and hygiene products made in Russia to people within the country.

It said that it was supplying "everyday food and hygiene products made in Russia to people in the country," and noted that "exiting is not straightforward" process.

The demonstrations

As per AFP, demonstrations took place outside Unilever's London headquarters, with activists from both Ukraine and Britain displaying signs. One billboard reportedly resembled a Dove advertisement and featured wounded Ukrainian soldiers.

Unilever's 2022 results indicate that two per cent of its net profit was earned through operations in Russia. According to estimates from the Kyiv School of Economics, Unilever paid at least $331 million in Russian taxes last year.

How global leaders reacted to rebellion in Russia, Wagner's control of Rostov-on-Don

Yevgeny Prigozhin, the mercenary group Wagner's chief, on Friday, accused Moscow's military leadership of ordering strikes on his camps and killing a "huge" number of forces.

"We were ready to make concessions to the defence ministry, surrender our weapons," Prigozhin said in an audio message released by his spokespeople.

"Today, seeing that we have not been broken, they conducted missile strikes at our rear camps," he added.

The Russian defence ministry has denied Prigozhin's claims of strikes on camps of Wagner forces. As per a report by CNN, Russia’s domestic intelligence service has now opened a criminal case against him.

There was no need for Russia to invade Ukraine

Wagner chief also blamed defence minister Sergei Shoigu for starting the war in Ukraine in February last year.

Prigozhin has often accused Shoigu and some other officials during the course of the war, but the latest allegation is significant, as it questions Russia's justifications for invading Ukraine.

In a video posted on social media on Friday (June 23), the Wagner chief can be heard saying that Russia did not face any imminent security threat to justify the full-scale invasion of Ukraine.

In a half-hour video released by his press service, Prigozhin said, "The Armed Forces of Ukraine were not going to attack Russia with the NATO bloc. The Russian Defence Ministry is deceiving the public and the president."

"On 24 February [2022] there was nothing extraordinary happening there. Now the Ministry of Defence is trying to deceive the public, deceive the president and tell a story that there was some crazy aggression by Ukraine, that - together with the whole NATO bloc - Ukraine was planning to attack us," he said.

"The war was needed... so that Shoigu could become a Marshal, so that he could get a second Hero Star… the war wasn't for demilitarising or de-nazifying Ukraine. It was needed for an extra star," he further added.

"Why did the special military operation begin? ... the war was needed for the self-promotion of a bunch of ba***rds," he added, further blaming Russian military leadership for "poorly planning" the invasion and "embarrassing" because of the setbacks on the battlefield.

"That's why it has become a protracted war," he said.

Prigozhin said that the war was also needed to enrich the ruling elite who were not satisfied with the commercial potential of part of Ukraine's Donbas region that Moscow seized control of in 2014 via a proxy separatist force.

He said, "The task was to divide material assets (in Ukraine). There was massive theft in the Donbas, but they wanted more."

Russia orders Wagner chief Yevgeny Prigozhin’s arrest after his call for mutiny

Warning bells are ringing in Moscow over fears that Wagner chief Yevgeny Prigozhin might attempt at orchestrating a military coup in Russia. The enraged Wagner boss declared Saturday that his men had crossed the border from Ukraine into Russia and he was ready to go “all the way” against the Russian military.

"We are going onwards and we will go to the end," Yevgeny Prigozhin, 62, said in an audio message.

"We will destroy everything that stands in our way," he added in the most audacious challenge to President Vladimir Putin since the start of the offensive in Ukraine last year.

Why Kremlin and Wagner chief are at loggerheads?

A long-running standoff between Kremlin and Russia’s top military brass seems to have come to a head. Earlier, the Wagner boss accused Russia of staging an attack on his men and killing 2,000 of them. "Today, seeing that we have not been broken, they conducted missile strikes at our rear camps," Prigozhin alleged.

Earlier, he also blamed the Russian defence ministry and Defence Minister Sergei Shoigu for starting the war in Ukraine. He said, "The Armed Forces of Ukraine were not going to attack Russia with the NATO bloc. The Russian Defence Ministry is deceiving the public and the president."

Russia also accused mercenary chief Yevgeny Prigozhin of calling for an armed mutiny after he alleged, without providing evidence, that the military leadership had claimed the lives of 2,000 of his fighters and vowed to stop what he called its "evil".

Russia’s top commander in Ukraine, Sergey Surovikin, on Friday evening, urged the Wagner fighters to "stop" and to "obey the will" of President Vladimir Putin.

"I’m addressing the leadership, commanders and fighters of Wagner. Together with you, we have traveled a difficult and hard path. We fought together, took risks, suffered losses and we won together. We are of the same blood. We are warriors. I urge you to stop, the enemy is only waiting for the internal political situation to worsen in our country," Surovikin was quoted as saying in Russian state media reports.

Meanwhile, security around Moscow and the Kremlin has been beefed up. The military build-up in the area has been increasing for some hours now. Russian President Vladimir Putin is aware of the situation that is unfolding around Yevgeny Prigozhin, the founder of the private military company Wagner, and the necessary measures are being taken, Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov said, as per news agency TASS.

This statement comes in response to the Wagner mercenary group's declaration of overthrowing the country's senior military leadership. "The president is working in the Kremlin," Peskov told the state-run RIA Novosti news agency, after Wagner units claimed to have captured military installations in southern Russia. Fuel depot catches fire in Russia’s Voronezh as Wagner mutiny continues

Russian President Vladimir Putin, in a televised address to the Russians on Saturday, said that necessary orders have been given to the troops to neutralise those who have orchestrated the armed rebellion.

The president addressed the nation as Wagner mercenary chief Yevgeny Prigozhin's armed forces declared to have gained control over the Russian city of RostoV and his army continued to 'march' towards the capital to oust the military leadership of the country.

Putin appeals for 'unity', says won't allow civil war

"I appeal to the citizens of Russia, to the personnel of the Armed Forces, law enforcement agencies and special services, to the soldiers and commanders who are now fighting in their combat positions, repelling enemy attacks – they are doing it heroically. I know. Today, I once again spoke with the commanders of all directions. I also appeal to those who, by deceit or threats, were dragged into a criminal adventure, pushed onto the path of a grave crime – an armed rebellion,” Putin said, in his address.

The Wagner chief is facing accusations of "incitement to armed rebellion" as he asked Russians to support his 25,000 Wagner fighters against Defence Minister Sergei Shoigu. Prigozhin has been charged with armed mutiny and can face up to 20 years of imprisonment, as per TASS.

"Although it is clear from the size of the tomes that I am a sophisticated and persistent criminal, it is impossible to find out what exactly I am accused of," he remarked.

Among the charges, Navalny faces are financing extremist activity, publicly inciting extremist activities, and "rehabilitating the Nazi ideology.

This trial marks the first overtly political case against him, according to his team.

Speaking to AFP, Navalny's spokeswoman, Kira Yarmysh, emphasised that "he is being tried for his political work".

Yarmysh added that the initial court hearing on Monday is expected to be open to the public, but there remains the possibility that reporters can be banned from covering the proceedings "even three minutes after the start".

In April, Navalny revealed that he had been informed of an impending trial by a military tribunal on charges of "terrorism," which could result in a life sentence.

The imprisoned Kremlin critic

Navalny, who as per AFP, is known for his ability to mobilise large-scale anti-Kremlin protests, is currently serving a nine-year prison sentence on embezzlement charges, which his supporters view as a form of punishment for his political activities.

The 47-year-old Navalny was arrested in 2021 upon his return from Germany, where he had been recuperating from a poison attack the previous year, an incident he attributed to the Kremlin.

He claimed that prison officials compelled him to share a cell with a 'sick, foul-smelling inmate' and subjected him, along with other prisoners, to "torture by Putin," forcing them to listen to speeches by the Russian president.

On his third birthday behind bars in early June, Navalny stated that he was "in a really good mood" but expressed a heartfelt desire to wake up outside the prison.

In February, he asserted that Moscow's defeat in Ukraine was "inevitable" and that Russia should be held accountable for Ukraine's losses once the conflict ends.

A vast Soviet-era dam in the Russian-controlled part of southern Ukraine was destroyed on Tuesday. According to both the Ukrainian and the Russian forces, the destruction has unleashed a flood of water across the war zone. The destruction of the major dam has flooded nearby regions, prompting Ukraine to evacuate 16,000 residents from the 'critical zone'.

The two sides have blamed each other for destroying the dam.

Unverified visuals on social media show the reservoir "emptying into the Dnipro" river after a series of intense explosions around the Kakhovka Dam. Other videos show water surging through the remains of the dam, with bystanders expressing their shock, sometimes in strong language.

Ukraine dam supplying nuke plant, Crimea breached in blast, thousands evacuate amid flooding fears

As the Ukraine war shows no signs of abetting and nears 500 days of conflict, the situation inside Russia remains stifling. In the latest move to stifle opposition, Russia arrested more than 100 supporters of opposition leader and Kremlin critic Alexei Navalny on Sunday. The people, as per a protest monitoring group, had taken to the streets to mark the 47th birthday of their jailed leader.

The arrests

In its statement, the monitoring group OVD-Info said that people have been detained in 23 cities across Russia. The number of individuals arrested as of 10:42 pm Moscow time (1942 GMT) stood at 109.

Reuters reports that footage from Russia's two largest cities Moscow and St Petersburg shows police arresting individual protestors. In most cities, "only a handful" of individuals have been detained.

In one clip, a man could be seen holding up a protest sign briefly, before police usher him away, "bent over, as he groaned in pain".

Reportedly, another man in Moscow, who held up a sign that said "Free Navalny" in English, was also arrested among many others.

In St Petersburg, authorities arrested a woman who was accompanied by her "underage child".
Talking to reporters, the woman said: "I'm against the war, that's why they detained me with my underage kid."

A repeating pattern?

Ever since the Russia-Ukraine war began with Russian President Vladimir Putin's announcement of a "special military operation" on February 24th, 2022, authorities in Moscow have clamped down heavily on any signs of dissent.

Taking the crackdown on freedom to a new level, as per AFP, Russia has shut down independent media. Most key opposition figures are in exile or, like Alexei Navalny, are behind bars.

Nikki Haley, a Republican candidate in the race for the US White House, has criticised her two contenders, former President Donald Trump and Florida Governor Ron DeSantis for their stance on Ukraine's conflict with Russia.

Haley, who previously served as the UN ambassador under Trump, took issue with their refusal to express a clear position on whether they want Ukraine to succeed in its war against Russia.

What is their stand?

In a recent statement, Trump stated that he wanted the war to end and that he would assist in negotiations between Ukraine and Russia.

DeSantis too has expressed his support for a settlement to the war and said he hoped for an end to the fighting by the time he becomes the president in January 2025.

Haley, during a CNN town hall event in Iowa, criticized DeSantis for referring to the conflict as a "territorial dispute," a statement he has since retracted.

Republican contenders

In the upcoming elections the number of Republican contenders will this week reach double digits, reports Reuters.

Despite being among the Republican contenders, Haley faces strong competition from Trump, who leads the field with 49 per cent support, and DeSantis, who follows with 19 per cent support in Reuters/Ipsos opinion poll conducted in May.

The race for White House

As per Reuters, Haley and other candidates polling in the single digits are attempting to differentiate themselves from DeSantis in the hopes that he stumbles, allowing them to emerge as the primary alternative to Trump.

Some candidates, including Haley, have also started criticising Trump directly, a departure from their previous reluctance to do so out of fear of alienating his loyal supporters.

South Africa will soon host the heads of state of BRICS nations, a summit which, as per reports, Russian President Vladimir Putin might attend. Overshadowing everything else is one question: Will Putin be arrested?

Here's all you need to know.

BRICS summit

BRICS is a five-nation geopolitical bloc that consists of regional economies: Brazil, Russia, India, China and South Africa.

From August 22-24, the bloc will gather for its 15th summit in South Africa's Johannesburg.

Warrant for Vladimir Putin's arrest

Russian President Vladimir Putin is currently facing an international arrest warrant.

The warrant has been issued by the International Criminal Court (ICC) for the Russian president's role in the alleged forced deportation of Ukrainian kids. Reports claim that amid the ongoing Russia-Ukraine war, Moscow has "stolen" thousands of Ukrainian children and has subjected them to "Russification".

According to Kyiv, more than 16,000 Ukrainian children have been deported to Russia since the start of Moscow's offensive in February 2022. The war-torn nation has alleged that many of these children have reportedly been placed in institutions and foster homes.

Russia has vehemently denied these allegations. Additionally, given that Russia is not a member of the ICC, the country has dismissed the validity of the arrest warrant and called it "void".

How does South Africa figure in this?

Unlike Russia, South Africa is a signatory of the ICC and, in theory, it would be duty-bound to arrest Putin if the leader steps foot on the nation's ground. Additionally, as a nation with strong trade and economic relations with the United States and Europe, South Africa would be expected to arrest him if he sets foot in the country.

However, the International Criminal Court does not have any authority to make any country enforce an arrest warrant.

Immunities and other privileges

The South African foreign ministry recently announced that as per its "standard" practice, it is granting immunity to BRICS meeting participants.

As per Clayson Monyela, spokesperson of South Africa's international relations department, "These immunities do not override any warrant that may have been issued by any international tribunal against any attendee of the conference."

Speaking at the sidelines of the foreign ministers meeting in Cape Town on Thursday (June 1st), South Africa's foreign minister Naledi Pandor said her country was mulling options.

"Our government is currently looking at what the legal options are with respect to this matter and I've indicated ... that it is something the president will be the best person to speak about (this) once it has reached a conclusion," said Pandor while talking to reporters on the sidelines of a BRICS foreign ministers meeting in Cape Town.

What is diplomatic immunity?

Diplomatic immunity is a principle of international law. Traditionally, diplomats representing their country abroad enjoy immunity, which protects them against prosecution in the receiving state for the entire period in which they hold their diplomatic post.

Similar cases with international warrants and diplomatic immunity

- In 1998, former Chilean dictator General Augusto Pinochet, who at the time had an Interpol Red Notice against him was arrested at a London hospital on a request from Spain. Pinochet presided over a 17-year reign of terror and allegedly ordered foreign assassinations. The warrant alleged that between 1973 and 1983 he committed atrocities against Spanish citizens.

- The former president of Yugoslavia, Boron Milosevic, had arrest warrants issued against him for crimes committed in Kosovo. The warrants were issued by the International Criminal Tribunal for the former Yugoslavia (ICTY) in May 1999. In 2000, he was ousted from power and soon after, Serbia’s new Prime Minister opposition leader Zoran Djindjić authorised Milošević’s transfer to The Hague. In June 2001, he was transferred into the custody of the UN Detention Unit in The Hague.

- As per Politico, in 2015 the then Sudanese President Omar al-Bashir was allowed to leave South Africa after he visited Pretoria for an African Union Summit. The leader had two pending ICC warrants against him — for alleged genocide and war crimes in Darfur.

While Putin's attendance at the BRICS summit is not confirmed yet, if he does decide to attend, one of these three scenarios might play out.

As per South African Foreign Minister Naledi Pandor, invitations have been issued to all heads of state from the five BRICS nations for the August 22-24 summit in Johannesburg.

The Kremlin is yet to confirm if the Russian president, who has for a large part avoided international travel since the start of the Ukraine war, will attend the summit in person.

However, as per Russian state newswire Ria Novosti, on Tuesday (May 30th), Kremlin spokesperson Dmitry Peskov said that the country would "take part in this summit at the proper level".

Explained: Will Putin be arrested? Here's what happens to the ICC arrest warrant

Following the issuance of an arrest warrant for Russian President Vladimir Putin by the International Criminal Court (ICC) in March, Russian authorities have added ICC prosecutor Karim Khan to their "wanted" list.

As per AFP, Khan's photo appeared in the Russian interior ministry's database on Friday. The notice reportedly identifies Khan as "a man born on March 30, 1970, in Edinburgh, Scotland" but fails to specify his offence.

Was Karim Khan investigated?

In March, Russia's Investigative Committee, which is responsible for investigating major crimes, stated that Khan was under investigation for the "criminal prosecution of a person known to be innocent" and for allegedly planning "an attack on a representative of a foreign state enjoying international protection."

Reuters reports that Moscow opened cases against Khan and three ICC judges on March 20 — just days after the ICC order for Putin's arrest.

Why did the ICC issue an arrest warrant for Vladimir Putin?

As per AFP, the ICC's arrest warrant against Putin was issued for alleged war crimes related to the unlawful deportation of Ukrainian children.

In addition to Putin's arrest warrant, the international court had also issued an arrest warrant for Maria Lvova-Belova, Russia's presidential commissioner for children's rights.

Can Putin actually be arrested?

Since Russia is not a member of the ICC, the country has dismissed the validity of the arrest warrants and said they were "void".

Nevertheless, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky welcomed the ICC's decision as a "historic" one that initiates historic accountability. US President Joe Biden too supported the arrest warrant for Putin, stating that it was "justified".

How many children has Russia 'stolen'?

According to Kyiv, more than 16,000 Ukrainian children have been deported to Russia since the start of Moscow's offensive in February 2022. The war-torn nation has alleged that many of these children have reportedly been placed in institutions and foster homes.

Russia and Putin have denied that any war crimes have been committed during the invasion of Ukraine. Instead, they allege that they are victims of Western aggression and lies. The nation also claims that it has saved Ukrainian children from the horrors of the war.

However, last month, in a resolution adopted by its parliamentary assembly, the Council of Europe too condemned Russia's forced transfer of Ukrainian children and declared that it constitutes genocide.

The resolution highlighted that there is evidence indicating that the deported children were subjected to a process of "russification" through re-education in Russian language, culture, and history and emphasised that these transfers of Ukrainian children were clearly part of a systematic state policy, with the intention of eradicating any connection to their Ukrainian identity and eliminating their Ukrainian cultural characteristics.

The Parliamentary Assembly of the Council of Europe (PACE) also called for the United Nations and the Red Cross to be granted access, enabling them to collect information about the affected children.

Russia retaliates to ICC arrest warrant against Putin, puts its prosecutor Karim Khan on wanted list

A top Ukrainian war chief has revealed that the war-torn nation is ready to launch its much-anticipated counter-offensive against Russian forces. Oleksiy Danilov, Secretary of the National Security and Defence Council, revealed in an interview with the BBC that the assault to reclaim territory from President Vladimir Putin's occupying forces could begin at any time, be it "tomorrow, the day after tomorrow or in a week".

A key figure in President Volodymyr Zelensky's de facto war cabinet, Danilov also confirmed that some Wagner mercenary forces were withdrawing from the city of Bakhmut — which has been the site of intense battle. However, he cautioned they were "regrouping to another three locations" and would continue their fight against Ukraine.

Responding to reports about the looming threat of nuclear weapons, Danilov said that he was "absolutely calm" about the deployment of nuclear weapons to Belarus by Russia and that it was not news to Ukraine.

Why did Ukraine wait so long to launch counter-offensive?

The country, as per reports, has been meticulously planning its counter-offensive for months, utilising the time to train troops and receive military equipment from Western allies. However, Russian forces have also been fortifying their defences in preparation for the upcoming counter-offensive.

For Ukraine, the stakes are high. The nation needs to show its citizens and Western allies it can break through Russian lines, overcome the military deadlock, and reclaim its sovereign territory.

Danilov emphasised the importance of avoiding mistakes and warned that the Ukraine government had "no right to make a mistake" as he believes this is a historic opportunity that Ukraine cannot afford to miss.

Is Ukraine ready for a counter-offensive?

When questioned about the readiness of Ukrainian forces for the offensive, Danilov stressed the troops' constant state of readiness, noting that their commitment to defending their country does not depend on time.

"We are always ready. The same as we were ready to defend our country at any time. And it is not a question of time," he said.

"We have to understand that that historic opportunity that is given to us – by God – to our country, we cannot lose, so we can truly become an independent, big European country," he added.

Dismissing speculations that the counter-offensive had already begun, the war chief clarified the Ukrainian armed forces have been engaged in demolishing Russian control centres and military equipment since February 24th 2022 — the start of Russia's invasion.

Emphasising the responsibility they have, he said that naming specific dates for the start of the offensive would be imprudent.

"It could happen tomorrow, the day after tomorrow or in a week."

"It would be weird if I were to name dates of the start of that or those events. That cannot be done…. We have a very responsible task before our country. And we understand that we have no right to make a mistake," he remarked.

Bakhmut, a key region in the ongoing conflict, has been the location of huge amounts of carnage and casualties.

Defending Ukraine's military's decision to fight for an extended period in Bakhmut, despite the heavy casualties, he said "Bakhmut is our land, our territory, and we must defend it."

"If we start leaving every settlement, that could get us to our western border, as Putin wanted from the first days of the war." Acknowledging that Ukraine currently controls only a small part of the city, Danilov emphasised the significant role Bakhmut has played in the war.

Kyiv's much-awaited counter-offensive can begin 'tomorrow, day after or in a week': Top Ukraine war chief

Wagner chief Yevgeny Prigozhin on Sunday stated that he was convinced that senior officials in the Kremlin had prohibited any coverage of him on state media. He warned that this misleading strategy of withholding information would ultimately end up in a backlash, causing resentment among the Russian people in a matter of months.

Wagner chief and the taboos of Putin's Russia

Prigozhin, the founder of the Wagner mercenary group and a well-known figure in President Vladimir Putin's inner circle, has gained significant notoriety during the 15-month conflict in Ukraine. He has come up with infamous outbursts on several occasions, supposedly breaking the strict rules put in place by Putin.

In doing so, Prigozhin supposedly broke the taboos of Putin's Russia, and this is reflected by the fact that Russian state television ignored the fall of Bakhmut for 20 hours and downplayed Prigozhin's role in the significant victory while refraining from airing his victory speech.

Why would Russia blank someone from Putin's inner circle?

In recent months, 'Putin's chef' has gained notoriety for the brutal discipline of his mercenaries and his use of obscene language and prison slang directed at top military figures, including Defence Minister Sergei Shoigu.

As per reports, because of this bad blood, after Prigozhin declared victory in Bakhmut, it took the Kremlin 10 hours to issue a brief statement congratulating Wagner and other armed forces units for "liberating" Artyomovsk, the Soviet-era name for Bakhmut used by Russia. However, even then the statement did not mention the Wagner chief by name.

What does the Wagner chief think about this ban?

Reuters reports that when questioned about the apparent ban on his coverage, Prigozhin humorously used a series of Russian proverbs to poke fun at those behind this purported ban and said: "What is forbidden is always sweeter."

He emphasised that Wagner, his mercenary group, was not something that could be easily concealed or dismissed by bureaucrats.

"Wagner is not a piece of slippery soap which the bureaucrats have got used to shoving all over the place; Wagner is an awl, a stiletto that you cannot hide," he said.

"I am absolutely convinced they have forbidden (coverage)."

He warned that attempts to silence the discussion of Wagner would only provoke a strong reaction from the Russian people.

"That high-level bureaucrats, those very towers of the Kremlin, who are trying to shut the mouths of everyone so that they don't speak about Wagner, will only give another shove to the people."

Prigozhin predicted that within a couple of months, the people would respond to the suppression of information by those in power.

"In the long term - long term is two or three months - they will receive a finger-slap from the people for trying to shut everyone's mouths and ears," said the Wagner mercenary group founder.

Reuters reports that till now both the Kremlin and the defence ministry have chosen to ignore Prigozhin's outbursts, despite their apparent violation of the tightly controlled political system established by Putin since he assumed the presidency.

He warned that this misleading strategy of withholding information would ultimately end up in a backlash, causing resentment among the Russian people in a matter of months. Wagner chief and the taboos of Putin's Russia Prigozhin, the founder of the Wagner mercenary group and a well-known figure in President Vladimir Putin's inner circle, has gained significant notoriety during the 15-month conflict in Ukraine. Wagner chief warns Kremlin, says blanking him out on state media will provoke backlash

Yevgeny Prigozhin, the founder of Russia's Wagner Group, on Monday (May 22nd) vowed that his troops will leave Bakhmut, handing over the control of the prized city to Russian forces from approximately around May 25 until June 1. The city, as per the Wagner chief's claims, was successfully taken over on Saturday (May 20th) after a months-long battle. However, Kyiv remains steadfast in its counter-claim that the battle for Bakhmut is still on.

Prigozhin said that "Wagner will leave Artemovsk from 25 May to 1 June". Bakhmut was previously known as Artemovsk. It was renamed by Ukraine.

As per an AFP report, he previously said that Wagner forces would pull out by May 25.

In an audio recording on Telegram, Wagner founder Prigozhin said that ahead of the transfer, Wagner has set up "defence lines" west of the city.

However, as per Ukraine, its troops are still advancing on the outskirts of Bakhmut. It said that its forces still controlled a corner of the eastern Ukrainian city and that the battles are ongoing.

Earlier, Russian President Vladimir Putin also congratulated Wagner and the Russian army on the alleged conquest.

"The fighting continues," said Ukraine's deputy defence minister Ganna Malyar. A day earlier, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky also stated that Bakhmut was "not occupied" by enemy Russia.

Malyar claimed that Kyiv's troops still retain control of the "Airplane" district of Bakhmut.

"The battle for the dominant heights on the flanks — north and south of the suburbs — continues," she added as per AFP.

Russia-Ukraine | Wagner chief vows his forces will handover Bakhmut to Russian army by June 1

In a rare announcement of its losses on the battlefield, Russia on Sunday said that two of its military commanders had been killed in combat near the frontline hotspot of Bakhmut in eastern Ukraine. The nation also disclosed that its forces have struck Western arm depots and Ukrainian troops in the western city of Ternopil and the eastern town of Petropavlivka, reports AFP.

As per a Russian defence ministry statement published by the nation's news agencies, Russia's armed forces "delivered a strike with high-precision long-range air and sea-based weapons at the points of deployment of the Ukrainian armed forces."

"Places of storage of ammunition, weapons and military equipment received from Western countries," were also struck, it said.

Battlefield losses

The Russian defence ministry in a statement announced that Vyacheslav Makarov, the commander of the 4th motorised rifle brigade, and Yevgeny Brovko, deputy commander of the Army Corps for military-political work, had been killed in fighting in eastern Ukraine.

The military commanders were reportedly killed during clashes for control of Bakhmut in eastern Donetsk. The first, Colonel Makarov, died while his brigade was warding off attacks from Ukrainian troops in the south of Krasne. As the third attack was being repelled, he was seriously wounded and died while being evacuated from the battlefield.

"Two attacks of the enemy have been repelled," said the Russian ministry in a statement.

"As a third attack was being repelled, the brigade commander was seriously wounded and died during the evacuation from the battlefield."

The second commander, Brovko, died while repelling attacks by Ukrainian troops elsewhere. The ministry stated that he "died heroically, having received multiple shrapnel wounds"

Moscow also said that "assault detachments" — which, as per AFP, was a reference to the Wagner mercenary group — with the help of airborne forces, continued to fight for control of the western regions of Bakhmut.

The ministry said that all attacks by Ukrainian forces have been repelled. Referring to Bakhmut by its Russian name, it said: "Over the past day the enemy has made massive attempts to break through the defence of our troops to the north and south of Artemovsk."

Russia has remained tight-lipped about its losses in the ongoing Ukraine war. Last year, the nation's Defence Minister Sergei Shoigu, in an equally rare announcement, stated that 5,937 Russian soldiers had been killed in Ukraine. However, analysts claim that the actual figures are higher than those reported by Moscow.

Russia's rare announcement of battlefield losses: Two commanders killed in Ukraine's Bakhmut

As per a report by the Russian news outlet Kommersant, four Russian military aircraft, including two fighter jets and two military helicopters, were shot down near the Ukrainian border on Saturday. The incident reportedly occurred in the Bryansk region, close to northeast Ukraine, and, if confirmed, would be a significant victory for Kyiv.

As per the report published on the Kommersant website, the raiding party reportedly comprised a Su-34 fighter bomber, a Su-35 fighter, and two Mi-8 helicopters.

The aircraft were reportedly "shot down almost simultaneously" in the ambush. The fighter jets were allegedly intended to deliver a missile and bomb attack on targets in Ukraine's Chernihiv region, with the helicopters providing backup support and recovery for the fighter jet crews.

Kommersant claims that all four crews were killed in the incident.

"According to preliminary data ... the fighters were supposed to deliver a missile and bomb attack on targets in the Chernihiv region of Ukraine, and the helicopters were there to back them up - among other things to pick up the 'Su' crews if they were shot down."

Although Kommersant did not provide any evidence for the downing of four aircraft, other pro-war military bloggers have also made similar claims.

The Russian defence ministry is yet to make a statement about the crash or the alleged ambush.

However, the Russian state news agency TASS reported that a Russian Su-34 warplane has crashed in the Bryansk region. The report did not mention the cause of the crash.

Citing emergency services, TASS also reported that a helicopter had crashed near Klintsy — about 40km (25 miles) from the border — due to an engine fire. It made no mention of a second helicopter or the Su-35.

However, as per Reuters, a video posted on the Russian pro-war Telegram channel Voyenniy Osvedomitel appeared to show a helicopter exploding in mid-air, being thrown off course, and then plunging towards the ground in flames. The video's comment section reportedly suggest that the helicopter, a Mi-8, was shot down by a missile, which led to its crash.

The Russian pro-war Telegram channel Voyenniy Osvedomitel suggested that an ambush with air defences had been staged, and the downed helicopters were Mi-8MTPR-1 electronic warfare craft, which can jam enemy radio and target signals.

"Most likely, the enemy staged an ambush with air defences previously transferred to a border zone close enough to hit our group," it said.

Four Russian aircraft on their way to bomb Ukraine's Chernihiv shot down, allegedly by Kyiv

A much-awaited report released by the United Nations (UN) on Friday claimed that at least 500 people were executed by foreign fighters and the Malian army during an anti-militant operation carried out in March 2022.

The UN High Commissioner for Human Rights (OHCHR) released the figures which revealed the worst atrocity the Sahel country has gone through since militant insurgency flared up in 2012.

The report is also the most damning document released till now against the armed forces of Mali and their foreign allies.

In the report, the nationality of foreign fighters has not been explicitly identified, although Mali has brought in Russians who are claimed to be Wagner mercenaries.

Explaining the events that unfolded in Mali's central town of Moura between March 27 and March 31 last year, the OHCHR said that it had "reasonable grounds to believe that at least 500 people were killed in violation of norms, standards, rules and/or principles of international law."

The victims were "executed by the Malian Armed Forces and foreign military personnel" who were completely controlling the area, it said.

The UN peacekeeping mission's human rights division in Mali, MINUSMA published the report after a lengthy investigation.

According to the report, around 20 women and seven children were killed, while evidence indicated that 58 women and girls were victims of rape and sexual violence.

People who had been detained were tortured, it stated.

UN High Commissioner for Human Rights Volker Turk termed the findings "extremely disturbing".

"Summary executions, rape and torture during armed conflict amount to war crimes and could, depending on the circumstances, amount to crimes against humanity," he said in a statement.

Mali's ruling junta did not react to the report on Friday. A military junta rules Mali after it toppled the elected president of the country in 2020 amid protests over the failure to counter the militants.

After taking over Mali, the junta brought in Russian operatives and warplanes to assist its beleaguered armed forces and broke ties with France, which was the traditional ally of the country.

The junta claims that Russians are providing military training and denies the accusations of them being Wagner mercenaries.

In light of "provocations" by Ukrainian forces, operations at the Zaporizhzhia nuclear plant have been suspended, according to a TASS state news agency report. The Moscow-installed governor of the Russia-controlled part of the surrounding region, Yevgeny Balitsky, cited concerns over Ukraine's anticipated counteroffensive to reclaim Russian-held territory, including areas in the Zaporizhzhia region.

Due to this, Russian authorities have reportedly initiated evacuations. Rafael Grossi, head of the United Nations nuclear power watchdog, on Saturday, expressed concerns about the plant's safety, describing the situation as "potentially dangerous."

"The general situation in the area near the Zaporizhzhya Nuclear Power Plant is becoming increasingly unpredictable and potentially dangerous," said the IAEA chief, adding that he's concerned.

"I’m extremely concerned about the very real nuclear safety and security risks facing the plant."

In response to the escalating situation, Russian officials have begun evacuating people from nearby areas. As per Reuters, approximately 3,000 people, including around 1,000 minors, have been evacuated from villages close to the front line.

Balitsky, the Moscow-installed governor, noted a rise in water levels in the nearby Kakhovka Reservoir, which he believes to be a manipulation. He did not provide further details on the matter.

"We've seen the level (of water in the nearby Kakhovka Reservoir) rise to 17.08 (metres). We realise that this is manipulation. The nuclear reactors have been suspended," he said as per TASS.

According to an AFP report, Ivan Fedorov, the mayor of Melitopol in Zaporizhzhia Oblast, said that the evacuation directive has resulted in "a mad panic and no less mad queues" at the checkpoint leading to Russian-annexed Crimea.

The International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA), led by Grossi, has previously issued warnings about the plant's safety following temporary power cuts caused by shelling. In March, the IAEA cautioned that the facility was relying on diesel generators to maintain crucial cooling systems due to damage to power lines.

Russia suspends operations at Zaporizhzhia nuclear plant, evacuates civilians amid threat of 'provocation'

A Ukrainian refugee family that escaped the war in their home country and fled to the United States has received the miracle they were hoping for their toddler, the 'gift of sound'.

In a heartwarming story of hope, a young Ukrainian war refugee named Zlata has been given the gift of sound by a team of dedicated doctors in South Carolina. Zlata, who was born deaf, received a cochlear implant that has allowed her to hear for the first time in her life.

Parents Diana Kuzmina and her husband Olech Kuzmin as per CBS were for months haunted by the fear that their young daughter, two-year-old Zlata Kuzmina, was completely deaf and would forever be denied the sense many of us take for granted.

Thanks to a "very nice" doctor, the toddler can now hear.

The family travelled from their home in Odesa, Ukraine, to the United States. The trip, which took nearly two months, had them stay in Moldova, the Czech Republic, Poland and Germany, before finally settling in Boiling Springs, South Carolina.

Once in the US, the father Oleh Kuzmin landed a job at a nearby BMW plant, and as per his wife Diana Kuzmina, the miracle happened because "a lot of people prayed for us and God sent us a very good team and a very nice doctor."

CBS identifies the "very nice doctor" as Dr Teddy McRackan, a surgeon and cochlear implant specialist.

Upon running a spate of diagnostics, McRackan and his team at the Medical University of South Carolina found that the two-year-old girl was deaf in her left ear, but that "she was responding at very, very loud levels to noise in that right ear."

In a procedure done at the MUSC Shawn Jenkins Children's Hospital, a cochlear implant was placed in Zlata's ear. But there was still no guarantee that the little Ukrainian refugee would be able to hear.

After a month of waiting for the surgical incision to heal, in April, the implant was turned on and they found that the procedure was a success. Although Zlata's deafness is not completely cured, the device attached to her head, and the implant enables her to hear.

Two-year-old Ukrainian refugee receives 'gift of sound' in United States

Russian mercenary Wagner Group's chief Yevgeny Prigozhin on Friday threatened to pull his frontline troops out of Bakhmut. In a series of scathing videos, the Wagner chief blamed Russian Defence Minister Sergei Shoigu and Chief of General Staff Valery Gerasimov for "tens of thousands" of killed and wounded Russian fighters in Ukraine. Ahead of an expected Ukrainian offensive, Prigozhin's extraordinary attack on military chiefs, as per AFP, has exposed a deep rift in Russian ranks.

Vowing to hold the generals to account for their failure to provide his fighters with sufficient ammunition, the paramilitary leader said: "For the tens of thousands killed and wounded, they will bear responsibility in front of their mothers and children, I will achieve that."

"Their unprofessionalism is destroying tens of thousands of Russian guys and that is unforgivable," he added.

Here's all you need to know about Wagner chief Yevgeny Prigozhin and his anger at Russian generals.

Who is Yevgeny Prigozhin?

Yevgeny Viktorovich Prigozhin is a Russian oligarch and a confidant of President Vladimir Putin, who is often called "Putin's chef."

His nickname stems from the fact that he owns restaurants and catering companies that provide services for the Kremlin.

The Wagner chief started his career as a petty criminal and even spent a decade behind bars for crime. Released from jail in 1990, he started selling hotdogs and before long owned a chain of supermarkets, before opening a restaurant called the Old Customs House which became one of Putin's favourite haunts.

Prigozhin and Putin

As per the Guardian, the Wagner chief and the Russian President met back when Putin was deputy mayor of St Petersburg, serving under the-then mayor, Anatoly Sobchak.

Putin was reportedly a frequent patron of Prigozhin's restaurant, Old Customs House, on St Petersburg's Vasilievsky Island; even after ascending to the post of Russian President, he would often take his guests to the restaurant, which by then had been turned into a floating restaurant.

He would soon go on to win contracts and cater for major government events through Concord, a holding company he had set up back in the 1990s. Next, he would win giant government supply contracts worth billions of roubles to provide food to Moscow’s schools and eventually the army.

In 2014, he founded Wagner to support Russian-backed separatists in eastern Ukraine.

As Prigozhin describes it: "I cleaned the old weapons myself, sorted out the bulletproof vests myself and found specialists who could help me with this. From that moment, on 1 May 2014, a group of patriots was born, which later came to be called the Wagner Battalion."

"I am proud that I was able to defend their right to protect the interests of their country," he added in the September 2022 statement, posted by his catering company, Concord.

The Wagner Group

Prigozhin controls a network of influential companies and is the founder of the Russian state-backed mercenary company Wagner Group.

The group, as per the Business Insider report, has played a significant role in the ongoing Russia-Ukraine war and was reportedly deployed to assassinate Ukrainian leaders. As per Russian media outlet Mediazona, the Wagner group has also been recruiting prisoners for frontline combat.

Wagner Group's ranks according to Western intelligence estimates have ballooned to about 50,000. This includes tens of thousands of ex-prisoners recruited from jails around Russia, often personally by Prigozhin.

The group has been accused of committing human rights abuses in Ukraine, Syria, Libya, Central African Republic, Sudan and Mozambique.

As per a report by Polygraph, Prigozhin also controls three companies that have been accused of interference in the 2016 and 2018 US elections. For the alleged influencing of elections, Prigozhin, along with six other individuals was even (re) designated under the Specially Designated Nationals And Blocked Persons List (SDN).

Prigozhin’s anger at Russian generals

The Wagner chief in a series of scathing videos has threatened to pull out his troops from Bakhmut.

"I will pull out Wagner units from Bakhmut because, in the absence of ammunition, they are facing a senseless death," said Prigozhin in a recently released video statement. He added that he was now expecting a plan from the military on how to implement the withdrawal.

As per AFP, while Prigozhin has made similar threats to pull out in the past, the emotive language and the scathing personal criticism of the leaders of Russia's campaign in Ukraine were unprecedented.

The Wagner chief claims that Russian generals are "withholding" ammunition urgently needed by his men. In February of this year, he had even termed the withholding of munition supplies as "treason".

Previously, in December 2022, he accused Russian President Vladimir Putin of cutting him off completely and said that he has been unable to get through to anyone at the Kremlin.

On his Telegram channel, he said, "To get me to stop asking for ammunition, all the hotlines to offices, to departments etc., have been cut off from me. But the real humdinger is that they’ve also blocked agencies from making decisions [related to Wagner]."

Ahead of an anticipated counter-offensive by Ukraine, the Russian army has replaced its highest-ranking general in charge of logistics. Colonel General Mikhail Mizintsev, who is under British sanctions for his role in the siege of the Ukrainian port city of Mariupol — seized by Russia around a year ago — has been replaced by Alexei Kuzmenkov, a former official from the National Guard, according to a statement from the Russian defence ministry.

"Kuzmenkov was appointed to the position of deputy defence minister of the Russian Federation, responsible for the logistical support of the Armed Forces," said the ministry in its statement. As per AFP, the statement did not mention why Mizintsev had been replaced after only seven months on the job.
