For the past few days, the Ukrainian leader&nbsp;has been meeting several Western leaders in order to jack up support as his country gears up for a counteroffensive against the invading Russian forces.

A statement issued by No 10, Downing Street on Monday said Sunak would reiterate the importance of providing a full package of support to Ukraine during the talks at Chequers, the prime minister's official country residence, reports BBC.

"We must not let them [Ukraine] down," the prime minister said, adding it was "a crucial moment" in Ukraine's war effort.

"The front lines of Putin's war of aggression may be in Ukraine but the faultlines stretch all over the world. It is in all our interest to ensure Ukraine succeeds and Putin's barbarism is not rewarded," it said.

After stopping over in France and Germany, Zelensky lands in UK for more weapons, Sunak pledges aid

In a rare announcement of its losses on the battlefield, Russia on Sunday said&nbsp;that two of its military commanders had been killed in combat near the frontline hotspot of Bakhmut in eastern Ukraine.&nbsp;The nation also disclosed&nbsp;that its&nbsp;forces have&nbsp;struck Western arm depots and Ukrainian troops in the western&nbsp;city of Ternopil and the eastern town of Petropavlivka, reports AFP.

As per a Russian defence ministry statement published&nbsp;by the nation's news agencies, Russia's armed forces "delivered a strike with high-precision long-range air and sea-based weapons at the points of deployment of the Ukrainian armed forces."

"Places of storage of ammunition, weapons and military equipment received from Western countries," were also struck, it said.

<h2>Battlefield losses</h2>

The Russian defence ministry in a statement announced that Vyacheslav Makarov, the commander of the 4th motorised rifle brigade, and Yevgeny Brovko, deputy commander of the Army Corps for military-political work, had been killed in fighting in eastern Ukraine.

The military commanders were reportedly killed during clashes for control of Bakhmut in eastern Donetsk. The first, Colonel Makarov, died while his brigade was warding off attacks from Ukrainian troops in the south of Krasne. As the third attack was being repelled, he was seriously wounded and died while being evacuated from the battlefield.

The second commander, Brovko, died while repelling attacks by Ukrainian troops elsewhere. The ministry stated that he "died heroically, having received multiple shrapnel wounds"

Moscow also said that "assault detachments" — which, as per AFP, was a reference to the Wagner mercenary group — with the help of airborne forces, continued to fight for control of the western regions of Bakhmut.&nbsp;

The ministry said that all attacks by Ukrainian forces have been repelled. Referring to Bakhmut by its Russian name, it said: "Over the past day the enemy has made massive attempts to break through the defence of our troops to the north and south of Artemovsk."&nbsp;

Russia has remained tight-lipped about its losses in the ongoing Ukraine war. Last year, the nation's Defence Minister Sergei Shoigu, in an equally rare announcement, stated that 5,937 Russian soldiers had been killed in Ukraine. However, analysts claim that the actual figures are higher than those reported by Moscow.

Russia's rare announcement of battlefield losses: Two commanders killed in Ukraine's Bakhmut

Germany's defence ministry on Saturday announced that they are preparing the country's biggest yet military aid package for Ukraine, which is worth 2.7 billion euros ($2.95 billion) ahead of President Volodymyr Zelensky's trip to Berlin.

"We all hope for a rapid end to this terrible war by Russia against the Ukrainian people, but unfortunately this is not in sight," said Defence Minister Boris Pistorius in a statement.

"This is why Germany will supply all the help that it can, for as long as necessary," he added.

Welcoming the weapons package from Germany, which includes 30 additional Leopard-1 tanks, Marder armoured vehicles, air-defence systems and surveillance drones, Kyiv said that Moscow may now not see a victory in the war.

President Zelensky's adviser Mykhailo Podolyak said the new arms package of Germany indicates that Russia was "bound to lose and sit on the bench of historical shame."

Increasingly powerful weapons have been delivered by the Western allies to Ukraine though they have still not given advanced fighter jets which Zelensky has requested.

Ukraine's senior military commander on Saturday said that Kyiv's forces are advancing along part of the Bakhmut front line against Russian forces.

"Our soldiers are moving forward in some areas of the front, and the enemy is losing equipment and manpower," said the commander of the Ukrainian ground forces Oleksandr Syrskyi on social media.

Kyiv on Friday stated it had re-captured swathes of the area near Bakhmut, although Moscow insisted that the attack was repelled along a broad stretch of the front line.

<h2>Kyiv using UK missiles to hit 'civilian targets', alleges Moscow</h2>

Moscow on Saturday said that British long-range missiles are being used by Kyiv to hit civilian sites in the eastern city of Lugansk where six children have been injured.

On Friday evening, the defence ministry said that two civilian enterprises have been hit by Ukraine's armed forces, adding: "Storm Shadow air-to-air missiles supplied to the Kyiv regime by Great Britain were used for the strike, despite London's declarations that these weapons would not be used against civilian targets.”

This week, the UK government announced that it would send Storm Shadow missiles, which made it the first nation to provide longer-range weapons to Kyiv, in what Russia said is "an extremely hostile step".

'Moscow bound to lose', says Kyiv after Germany announces biggest arms package

As per a report by the Russian news outlet Kommersant, four Russian military aircraft, including two fighter jets and two military helicopters, were shot down near the Ukrainian border on Saturday. The incident reportedly occurred in the Bryansk region, close to northeast Ukraine, and, if confirmed, would be a significant victory for Kyiv.

As per the report published on the Kommersant website, the raiding party reportedly comprised a Su-34 fighter bomber, a Su-35 fighter, and two Mi-8 helicopters.&nbsp;

Also read |&nbsp;<a href="https://www.wionews.com/world/zelensky-set-to-meet-pope-as-germany-announces-more-arms-for-ukraine-592061">'Moscow bound to lose', says Kyiv after Germany announces biggest arms package</a>

The aircraft were&nbsp;reportedly "shot down almost simultaneously" in the ambush. The fighter jets were allegedly intended to deliver a missile and bomb attack on targets in Ukraine's Chernihiv region, with the helicopters providing backup support and recovery for the fighter jet crews.

Kommersant claims that&nbsp;all four crews were killed in the incident.

"According to preliminary data ... the fighters were supposed to deliver a missile and bomb attack on targets in the Chernihiv region of Ukraine, and the helicopters were there to back them up - among other things to pick up the 'Su' crews if they were shot down."

Although Kommersant did not provide any evidence for the downing of four aircraft, other pro-war military bloggers have also made similar claims.&nbsp;

The Russian defence ministry is yet to make a statement about the crash or the alleged ambush.

However, the Russian state news agency TASS reported that a Russian Su-34 warplane has crashed in the Bryansk region. The report did not mention the cause of the crash.

Citing emergency services, TASS also reported that a helicopter had crashed near Klintsy — about 40km (25 miles) from the border — due to an engine fire. It made no mention of a second helicopter or the Su-35.&nbsp;

However, as per Reuters, a video posted on the Russian pro-war Telegram channel Voyenniy Osvedomitel appeared to show a helicopter exploding in mid-air, being thrown off course, and then plunging towards the ground in flames. The video's comment section reportedly suggest that the helicopter, a Mi-8, was shot down by a missile, which led to its crash.

The Russian pro-war Telegram channel Voyenniy Osvedomitel suggested that an ambush with air defences had been staged, and the downed helicopters were Mi-8MTPR-1 electronic warfare craft, which can jam enemy radio and target signals.

"Most likely, the enemy staged an ambush with air defences previously transferred to a border zone close enough to hit our group," it said.

No official response from Ukraine has been made, but Mykhailo Podolyak, a senior adviser to Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskiy called the incident "Justice ... and instant karma" in a tweet.

Citing emergency services, TASS also reported that a helicopter had crashed near Klintsy — about 40km (25 miles) from the border — due to an engine fire. It made no mention of a second helicopter or the Su-35. In light of "provocations" by Ukrainian forces, operations at the Zaporizhzhia nuclear plant have been suspended, according to a TASS state news agency report. The Moscow-installed governor of the Russia-controlled part of the surrounding region,&nbsp;Yevgeny Balitsky, cited concerns over Ukraine's anticipated counteroffensive to reclaim Russian-held territory, including areas in the Zaporizhzhia region.

Due to this, Russian authorities have reportedly initiated evacuations. Rafael Grossi, head of the United Nations nuclear power watchdog, on Saturday, expressed concerns about the plant's safety, describing the situation as "potentially dangerous."

"The general situation in the area near the Zaporizhzhya Nuclear Power Plant is becoming increasingly unpredictable and potentially dangerous," said the IAEA chief, adding that he's concerned.&nbsp;

In response to the escalating situation, Russian officials have begun evacuating people from nearby areas. As per Reuters, approximately 3,000 people, including around 1,000 minors, have been evacuated from villages close to the front line.

"We've seen the level (of water in the nearby Kakhovka Reservoir) rise to 17.08 (metres). We realise that this is manipulation. The nuclear reactors have been suspended," he said as per TASS.

According to an AFP report, Ivan Fedorov, the mayor of Melitopol in Zaporizhzhia Oblast, said that the evacuation directive has resulted in "a mad panic and no less mad queues" at the checkpoint leading to Russian-annexed Crimea.

The International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA), led by Grossi, has previously issued warnings about the plant's safety following temporary power cuts caused by shelling. Russia suspends operations at Zaporizhzhia nuclear plant, evacuates civilians amid threat of 'provocation'

A Ukrainian refugee family that escaped the war in their home country and fled to the United States has received the miracle they were hoping for their toddler, the 'gift of sound'.

In a heartwarming story of hope, a young Ukrainian war refugee named Zlata has been given the gift of sound by a team of dedicated doctors in South Carolina. Zlata, who was born deaf, received a cochlear implant that has allowed her to hear for the first time in her life.&nbsp;

Parents Diana Kuzmina and her husband Olech Kuzmin as per CBS were for months haunted by the fear that their young daughter, two-year-old Zlata Kuzmina, was completely deaf and would forever be denied the sense many of us take for granted.

Thanks to a "very nice" doctor, the toddler can now hear.

The family travelled from their home in Odesa, Ukraine, to the United States. The trip, which took nearly two months, had them stay in Moldova, the Czech Republic, Poland and Germany, before finally settling in Boiling Springs, South Carolina.&nbsp;

Once in the US, the father Oleh Kuzmin landed a job at a nearby BMW plant, and as per his wife Diana Kuzmina, the miracle happened because "a lot of people prayed for us and God sent us a very good team and a very nice doctor."

CBS identifies the "very nice doctor" as Dr Teddy McRackan, a surgeon and cochlear implant specialist.&nbsp;

Upon running a spate of diagnostics, McRackan and his team at the Medical University of South Carolina found that the two-year-old girl was deaf in her left ear, but that "she was responding at very, very loud levels to noise in that right ear."

In a procedure done at the MUSC Shawn Jenkins Children's Hospital, a cochlear implant was placed in Zlata's ear. But there was still no guarantee that the little Ukrainian refugee would be able to hear.

After a month of waiting for the surgical incision to heal, in April, the implant was turned on and they found that the procedure was a success. Although Zlata's deafness is not completely cured, the device attached to her head, and the implant enables her to hear.

Two-year-old Ukrainian refugee receives 'gift of sound' in United States

Russian mercenary Wagner Group's chief Yevgeny Prigozhin on Friday threatened to pull his frontline troops out of Bakhmut. In a series of scathing videos, the Wagner chief blamed Russian Defence Minister Sergei Shoigu and Chief of General Staff Valery Gerasimov for "tens of thousands" of killed and wounded Russian fighters in Ukraine. Ahead of an expected Ukrainian offensive, Prigozhin's extraordinary attack on military chiefs, as per AFP, has exposed a deep rift in Russian ranks.

Vowing to hold the generals to account for their failure to provide his fighters with sufficient ammunition, the paramilitary leader said: "For the tens of thousands killed and wounded, they will bear responsibility in front of their mothers and children, I will achieve that."

"Their unprofessionalism is destroying tens of thousands of Russian guys and that is unforgivable," he added.

Here's all you need to know about Wagner chief Yevgeny Prigozhin and his anger at Russian generals.&nbsp;

<h2>Who is Yevgeny Prigozhin?</h2>

Yevgeny Viktorovich Prigozhin is a Russian oligarch and a confidant of President Vladimir Putin, who is often called "Putin's chef."&nbsp;

His nickname stems from the fact that he owns restaurants and catering companies that provide services for the Kremlin.

The Wagner chief started his career as a petty criminal and even spent a decade behind bars for crime. Released from jail in 1990, he started selling hotdogs and before long owned a chain of supermarkets, before opening a restaurant called the Old Customs House which became&nbsp;one of Putin's favourite haunts.

<h2>Prigozhin and Putin</h2>

As per the Guardian, the Wagner chief and the Russian President met back when Putin was deputy mayor of St Petersburg, serving under the-then mayor, Anatoly Sobchak.

Putin was reportedly a frequent patron of&nbsp;Prigozhin's restaurant, Old Customs House, on St Petersburg's Vasilievsky Island; even after ascending to the post of Russian President, he would often take his guests to the restaurant, which by then had been turned into a floating restaurant.&nbsp;

He would soon go on to win contracts and cater for major government events through Concord, a holding company he had set up back in the 1990s. Next, he would win giant government supply contracts worth billions of roubles to provide food to Moscow’s schools and eventually the army.

In 2014, he founded Wagner to support Russian-backed separatists in eastern Ukraine.

As Prigozhin describes it: "I cleaned the old weapons myself, sorted out the bulletproof vests myself and found specialists who could help me with this. From that moment, on 1 May 2014, a group of patriots was born, which later came to be called the Wagner Battalion."&nbsp;

"I am proud that I was able to defend their right to protect the interests of their country," he added in the September 2022 statement, posted by his catering company, Concord.

<h2>The Wagner Group</h2>

Prigozhin controls a network of influential companies and is the founder of the Russian state-backed mercenary company Wagner Group.&nbsp;

The group, as per the Business Insider report, has played a significant role in the ongoing Russia-Ukraine war and was reportedly deployed to assassinate Ukrainian leaders. As per Russian media outlet Mediazona, the Wagner group has also been recruiting prisoners for frontline combat.

Wagner Group's&nbsp;ranks according to Western intelligence estimates have ballooned to about 50,000. This includes tens of thousands of ex-prisoners recruited from jails around Russia, often personally by Prigozhin.

The group has been accused of committing human rights abuses in Ukraine, Syria, Libya, Central African Republic, Sudan and Mozambique.

As per a report by Polygraph, Prigozhin also controls three companies that have been accused of interference in the 2016 and 2018 US elections. For the alleged influencing of elections, Prigozhin, along with six other individuals was even (re) designated under the Specially Designated Nationals And Blocked Persons List (SDN).

<h2>Prigozhin’s anger at&nbsp;Russian generals</h2>

The Wagner chief in a series of scathing videos has threatened to pull out his&nbsp;troops from Bakhmut.

"I will pull out Wagner units from Bakhmut because, in the absence of ammunition, they are facing a senseless death," said Prigozhin in a recently released video statement. He added that he was now expecting a plan from the military on how to implement the withdrawal.

As per AFP, while Prigozhin has made similar threats to pull out in the past, the emotive language and the scathing personal criticism of the leaders of Russia's campaign in Ukraine were unprecedented.

The Wagner chief claims that Russian generals are "withholding" ammunition urgently needed by his men. In February of this year, he had even termed the withholding of munition supplies as "treason".

Previously, in December 2022, he accused Russian President Vladimir Putin of cutting him off completely and said that he has been unable to get through to anyone at the Kremlin.

On his Telegram channel, he said, "To get me to stop asking for ammunition, all the hotlines to offices, to departments etc., have been cut off from me. But the real humdinger is that they’ve also blocked agencies from making decisions [related to Wagner]."

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky said on Wednesday (May 3) that his country did not attack Russian President Vladimir Putin after Moscow claimed that two drones were shot down over the Kremlin and termed it an assassination attempt. "We didn't attack Putin... We fight on our territory, we are defending our villages and cities," Zelensky told reporters at a press conference with Nordic leaders in Finland's capital city Helsinki. "We fight on our territory. We are defending our villages and cities. We don't have, you know, enough weapons for this, that's why we don't use it anywhere. For us that is the deficit, we can't spend it and we didn't attack Putin. We leave it to the tribunal," Zelensky added. ALSO READ | Russia arrests Ukraine sabotage group's members for planning 'assassinations' Zelensky arrived in Finland earlier in the day and held talks with Finnish President Sauli Niinisto. He thanked Niinisto for the military support to Ukraine so far and said the two have agreed to speed up further deliveries. The Ukrainian president also participated in a summit in Helsinki which saw a gathering of the leaders of the five Nordic nations. Zelensky reaffirmed that Ukraine aims to be a member of the North Atlantic Treaty Organization (NATO), while the Nordic NATO members said they would "continue to support Ukraine on its path towards future membership." Zelensky's visit to Finland was announced only after his arrival amid tight security in the Finnish capital. Recently, Finland joined NATO in response to Russia's offensive in Ukraine. Hitting back at the membership of the intergovernmental military alliance, Russia said Finland's accession to NATO was a dangerous historic mistake that would weaken security in the wider region and force Moscow to take counter-measures. We didn't attack Putin: Ukraine's Zelensky as Nordic nations pledge continued support

Media baron Rupert Murdoch reportedly had a phone call with Ukraine President &nbsp;Volodymyr Zelensky weeks before firing Fox News'&nbsp;star anchor Tucker Carlson, according to Semafor news outlet.

Though a clear connection between the two events cannot be established, the timing of Carlson’s unceremonious exit, who has been critical of Zelensky, after the phone call has raised eyebrows.

Murdoch’s son and heir apparent, Fox Corp. CEO Lachlan Murdoch, also spoke with the Ukrainian president on March 15, the outlet reported.

The outlet quoting senior Ukrainian officials reported that Zelensky did not raise Carlson’s critical coverage of the Ukraine war during his phone conversation with the Murdochs, even though the government had expressed objections with the Fox executives in the past.

According to the report, both Rupert and Lachlan talked with Zelensky about the war in Ukraine and the deaths of two Fox News journalists in Ukraine last March.

Last week, Fox fired the controversial prime-time host Tucker Carlson without providing any reason. It was speculated that Carlson was sacked by the channel’s owner, Rupert Murdoch for, among other things, using vulgar language to describe a female executive.

The development came a week after Fox News agreed to pay voting equipment company Dominion $787.5m to settle a high-profile defamation lawsuit.

In an official statement, Fox News&nbsp;did not disclose the reason, saying that both Carlson and the network had “mutually” agreed to separate.

On Monday, Carlson’s slot was immediately replaced with a rotating roster of hosts until a permanent replacement can be found, the network said. In his video on Wednesday, Carlson implied his fans had not seen the last of him.

“Where can you still find Americans saying true things?” he said. “There aren’t many places left but there are some and that’s enough. As long as you can hear the words, there is hope. See you soon.”

Carlson’s alleged bias 'while covering Ukraine war

Since the start of the Russian invasion of Ukraine, Carlson was seen extensively criticising Zelenky’s administration.

On an episode of "Tucker Carlson Tonight" last month, Carlson argued that "leaked intelligence" showed "Ukraine is in fact losing the war" and claimed "seven Ukrainians are being killed for every Russian."

The leaked documents he cited actually suggest Russian troops have seen over twice as many casualties as Ukrainian troops.

According to a Washington Post report, during a Fox newsroom meeting, Rupert Murdoch"loudly" challenged Carlson about one of his segments on the Ukraine war.

The development came a week after Fox News agreed to pay voting equipment company Dominion $787.5m to settle a high-profile defamation lawsuit. Tucker Carlson's exit costs FOX $690 million In an official statement, Fox News did not disclose the reason, saying that both Carlson and the network had “mutually” agreed to separate. See you soon.” Carlson’s alleged bias 'while covering Ukraine war Since the start of the Russian invasion of Ukraine, Carlson was seen extensively criticising Zelenky’s administration. On an episode of "Tucker Carlson Tonight" last month, Carlson argued that "leaked intelligence" showed "Ukraine is in fact losing the war" and claimed "seven Ukrainians are being killed for every Russian." The leaked documents he cited actually suggest Russian troops have seen over twice as many casualties as Ukrainian troops. According to a Washington Post report, during a Fox newsroom meeting, Rupert Murdoch"loudly" challenged Carlson about one of his segments on the Ukraine war. Ahead of an anticipated counter-offensive by Ukraine, the Russian army has replaced its highest-ranking general in charge of logistics. Colonel General Mikhail Mizintsev, who is under British sanctions for his role in the siege of the Ukrainian port city of Mariupol — seized by Russia around a year ago — has been replaced by Alexei Kuzmenkov, a former official from the National Guard, according to a statement from the Russian defence ministry.

"Kuzmenkov was appointed to the position of deputy defence minister of the Russian Federation, responsible for the logistical support of the Armed Forces," said the ministry in its statement. As per AFP, the statement did not mention why Mizintsev had been replaced after only seven months on the job.

However, the replacement is no surprise. Last week, several influential Russian war correspondents, as per AFP, had predicted that Mizintsev would likely be removed from his post.

The Russian army has reportedly faced significant logistical challenges during its offensive in Ukraine. These challenges were highlighted during a chaotic mobilisation drive last year.

'Butcher of Mariupol': Russia replaces its logistics commander ahead of Ukraine counteroffensive

Ukraine's President Volodymyr Zelensky on Saturday said that they will launch its counter-offensive against the armed forces of Russia even though they have not received Western fighter aircraft.

On multiple occasions, Zelensky had appealed to widen the Western military aid's scope for Ukraine.

"Frankly speaking, it would help us a lot. But we also understand that we can't drag it (the counteroffensive) out, which is why we'll start before we receive F-16s or other models. But to calm Russia down with the fact that we'd still need a couple of months to train on the aircraft and only then we'd start (a counteroffensive). No, this won't happen. We'll start and go forward, while at the same time, simultaneously, I think this is very important (to receive western fighter aircraft)," he said.

While addressing the Scandinavian journalists in Kyiv, Zelensky said that there were nations that had F-16 and other "Western kind aircraft" which were "ready to help us".

"We are capable of putting an end to this war. However, not everything is going to happen at once tomorrow. We need time to train, but we have an understanding how to do this faster, and we understand the logistics behind it. And most importantly, as of today, there are countries that have F-16s or other 'western kind aircraft' who want to, and who are ready to help us,” he stated.

However, the Ukrainian leader did not specify which countries he was referring to. The Ukrainian air force only owns Soviet-era fighter aircraft.

Earlier, NATO Secretary General Jens Stoltenberg was pressed on this point by Zelensky at a meeting held in Kyiv on April 20 and said that the military alliance needed to open its doors for membership of Ukraine.

After facing a Russian winter as well as spring offensive which has made small advances in the east, Ukraine now plans to recapture the land in its east and south in a counteroffensive in the weeks or months ahead.

In an earlier interview, Zelensky had claimed that he carries a pistol and would have fought with the Russian forces to death if they had stormed his Kyiv headquarters when the war began.

"I know how to shoot. Could you imagine (a headline like) 'The President of Ukraine is taken captive by Russians?' This is a disgrace. I believe this would be a disgrace," he said while speaking to the 1+1 television channel.

Ukraine war: Russian missile strikes kill 26 including five children; Zelensky vows response

Ukraine rang with air raid alerts on Friday. Quoting local sources, Interfax Ukraine news agency reported that explosions were witnessed throughout the nation, “in cities in widely separated regions.”

As per a report by news agency AP,&nbsp;Russia fired more than 20 cruise missiles and two drones at Ukraine. At least 12 people were killed in these attacks, most of them when two missiles slammed into an apartment building in the centre of the country, said, officials.&nbsp;

Ukrainian Minister of Internal Affairs Ihor Klymenko, earlier&nbsp;reported that 10 people died in strikes on a nine-story residential building in central Ukraine's Uman city.&nbsp;The death toll from the Russian strikes in Ukraine's Uman has risen to 17, as per a recent report by Reuters, citing officials.&nbsp;

According to&nbsp;Ukrainian national police,&nbsp;17 people were wounded and three children were rescued from the rubble. Umam&nbsp;is located around 215 kilometres (134 miles) south of Kyiv.&nbsp;

The news agency quoted regional Telegram accounts and reported that unidentified airborne objects were headed for the west of Ukraine. Furthermore, explosions as per Interfax were reported after midnight in Dnipro, Kremenchuk and Poltava in central Ukraine and in Mykolaiv in the south.

Citing “another online source,” Reuters reports that an explosion was also reported in the Kyiv region.

Meanwhile, on Thursday Russian troops as per Ukrainian officers tried to cut off essential supply routes into Ukraine’s Bakhmut. This, as per the officers, was done with the motive of putting more pressure on defending forces.

Talking to the Freedom television channel, spokesperson for Ukrainian troops in the east Serhiy Cherevatyi, revealed that&nbsp;in the past 24 hours, Bakhmut had seen 13 new combats.

“The enemy’s main goal in the Bakhmut sector is to cut communication routes,” he said, adding that, “thanks to constant counter-battery combat ... we can deliver supplies and evacuate our wounded.”

Ukrainian military analyst Oleksander Musiyenko, as per Reuters, said that districts were rapidly changing hands in fierce fighting that has already gone on for 15 months.

Furthermore, in a resolution adopted on Thursday, the Council of Europe has branded Russia’s forced transfer of Ukrainian children as amounting to ‘genocide.’

Calling for the safe return of the children back home to Ukraine, it said “The documented evidence of this practice matches with the international definition of genocide.”

Volodymyr Zelensky, President of Ukraine, hailed the resolution as an “important,” decision and said that it would help “hold Russia and its leaders to account”.&nbsp;

In his evening address, he called the forced transfer of Ukrainian children an element of “Russia’s attempt to erase the identity of our people, to destroy the very essence of the Ukrainian people”, he said in his evening address.

Previously, on March 17, the Hague-based International Criminal Court (ICC) issued an arrest warrant for Russian President Vladimir Putin, over Moscow’s “unlawful deportation” of children. 17 dead after Russian missiles hit Ukraine; Council of Europe says Moscow's deportation of children 'genocide'

United State's proposal for the Group of Seven (G7) countries to ban all exports to Russia was met with resistance, ahead of a summit of the bloc.

As per a Financial Times report, the European Union (EU) and Japan pushed back against the proposal during negotiations ahead of a summit of the world's most advanced economies.

According to documents seen by the Financial Times, G7 leaders are drafting a statement for their meeting in Hiroshima next month. This statement includes a US proposal for a pledge to replace the current sector-by-sector sanctions regime against Russia with a complete export ban, with a few exemptions for agricultural, medical and other products.

The pledge is reportedly prompted by Washington's frustration over the loopholes in the existing system that allow&nbsp;Russia to continue to import Western technology.

During a preparatory meeting last week, EU and Japan however said that the move isn't feasible. Speaking on the condition of anonymity, one of the officials said that from their perspective "it is simply not do-able."

The US said that it would "continue to look for ways to hold Russia accountable."

The disagreement as per FT underscores the lack of additional options available to G&amp; leaders as the Western nations seek to penalise Russia for its invasion of Ukraine that began 15 months back. Since then, a number of sanction measures designed to cut off Moscow's economy from the global markets and deprive it of Western imports of technology, machinery and finance.

Japan, EU say US plans to ban all exports to Russia 'simply not do-able'

Russia has started using its new T-14 Armata battle tanks to fire on Ukrainian positions, according to the RIA state news agency. However, the report claims that the tanks "have not yet participated in direct assault operations."&nbsp;

As per the report, the T-14 Armata battle tanks have been fitted with extra protection on their flanks, and crews have undergone "combat coordination" at training grounds in Ukraine.&nbsp;

RIA states that the tank,&nbsp;which on a highway has&nbsp;a maximum speed of 80 kilometres or 50 miles an hour, also boasts an unmanned turret.&nbsp;

Crew can remotely control the armaments from "an isolated armoured capsule located in the front of the hull," reports Reuters.

This news comes just a couple of months after the British military intelligence in January reported that Russian forces in Ukraine were reluctant to accept the first tranche of the tanks due to their "poor condition."&nbsp;

"Production is probably only in the low tens, while commanders are unlikely to trust the vehicle in combat," the British military said.

"Eleven years in development," the programme has been dogged with delays, reduction in planned fleet size, and reports of manufacturing problems, it said.

British military intelligence also claimed that any deployment of the T-14 would likely be "a high-risk decision" for Russia, taken primarily for propaganda purposes.&nbsp;

Russian media reports state that the Kremlin had ordered the production of 2,300 tanks by 2020, but this was later stretched to 2025.&nbsp;

State conglomerate Rostec, as per Interfax news agency reports, had started production of some 40 tanks in 2021, with an anticipated delivery after 2023.

Just a day earlier (April 24th) the Russia-Ukraine war crossed its 15 months mark. The current conflict started on February 24th 2022 with an order from Russian President Vladimir Putin, and over its course, has already resulted in the loss of hundreds of lives and millions in infrastructure loss.&nbsp;

Russia has started using its new T-14 Armata battle tanks to fire on Ukrainian positions, according to the RIA state news agency. However, the report claims that the tanks "have not yet participated in direct assault operations." As per the report, the T-14 Armata battle tanks have been fitted with extra protection on their flanks, and crews have undergone "combat coordination" at training grounds in Ukraine. RIA states that the tank, which on a highway has a maximum speed of 80 kilometres or 50 miles an hour, also boasts an unmanned turret. This news comes just a couple of months after the British military intelligence in January reported that Russian forces in Ukraine were reluctant to accept the first tranche of the tanks due to their "poor condition." "Production is probably only in the low tens, while commanders are unlikely to trust the vehicle in combat," the British military said. "Eleven years in development," the programme has been dogged with delays, reduction in planned fleet size, and reports of manufacturing problems, it said. British military intelligence also claimed that any deployment of the T-14 would likely be "a high-risk decision" for Russia, taken primarily for propaganda purposes. Russian T-14 Armata battle tank debuts in Ukraine

At discussions in Warsaw on Monday, Kyiv is attempting to re-open food and grain transit via Poland. As per Reuters, this is a "first step" to lifting the import restrictions after some nations stopped importing grain from Ukraine to safeguard their own agricultural markets from an influx of supplies.

This comes as Poland and Hungary on Saturday announced bans on some imports. Slovakia also announced a similar action and reportedly other nations in central and eastern Europe are also considering action.

"The first step, in our opinion, should be the opening of transit, because it is quite important and it is the thing that should be done unconditionally and after that we will talk about other things," said Ukrainian Agriculture Minister Mykola Solsky.

Polish Agriculture Minister Robert Telus,&nbsp;as per TVP Info, revealed that talks between Ukraine and Poland were due to start in Warsaw around 12:00 pm (1000 GMT) on Monday.

As per Solsky, Ukraine is also holding additional talks this week in Romania on Wednesday, and in Slovakia on Thursday.

In comments published on the Telegram messaging app by the Agriculture Ministry Solsky said that about 10 per cent of food goods Ukraine exports cross the Polish border. While deliveries to Hungary account for around six per cent of Ukraine's farm exports.

Poland's embargo, which came into effect Saturday evening, also applies to transit through the country to keep grain transport from entering the Polish market.

"The ultimate goal is not that the import ban will be in force indefinitely, but to ensure that grain from Ukraine, which is to be exported, goes (where it is headed)," said Polish Deputy Foreign Minister Pawel Jablonski while talking to radio station RMF.

Russian strike on Ukraine’s Sloviansk residential area kills 8; Moscow puts naval forces on high alert

Kyiv on Monday alleged that Russia is using so-called "scorched earth" in its assault on Ukraine's besieged Bakhmut. As per a Reuters report, Moscow's forces are pressing attacks in Ukraine's eastern Donetsk region. The aggressor Russia is reportedly focusing on two cities of Bakhmut and Avdiivka, where it is pounding Ukrainian positions with air strikes and artillery barrages.&nbsp;

Ukraine's ground forces commander Colonel General Oleksandr Syrskyi on Monday said that the defence of Bakhmut continued and that the situation is "difficult but controllable."

Syrskyi as per Ukraine's Media Military Centre, claimed that Moscow is sending in special forces and airborne assaults as a backup for the Russian mercenary Wagner group, whose members as per the Ukrainian commander are exhausted.

He said that "the enemy switched to the so-called scorched earth tactics from Syria. It is destroying buildings and positions with air strikes and artillery fire."

Scorched-earth policy refers to a military strategy wherein everything that could be useful to the 'enemy' or the opposite side is destroyed or 'scorched.

Ukraine claims that Russian forces made "unsuccessful advances" on areas west of Bakhmut and that around 10 villages and towns in the area have so far come under Russian shelling. Reportedly, Russia has also failed in its advances on Avdiivka.

However, Denis Pushilin, the Russia-installed head of the eastern Ukrainian Donetsk region on Monday, announced that he had visited Bakhmut; a move that, as per AFP, suggests Russia has made significant gains. Pushilin published a video of the visit on Telegram.

Last week Yevgeny Prigozhin, the head of Wagner, had claimed that his mercenaries had "in a legal sense" captured Bakhmut because the group had taken control of city hall. However, the Russian army had reported no such gains.&nbsp;The battle of Bakhmut as per analysts holds little strategic value but has taken on a "huge symbolic" importance.

31 children that Russia 'stole' return home to Ukraine

Ukraine’s first deputy foreign affairs minister Emine Dzhaparova will make a four-day visit to India starting Monday (April 9), making it the first official visit of a minister from Kyiv since the start of the Russian invasion.

The visit will focus on bilateral relations, exchanging views on the current situation in Ukraine, and global issues of mutual interest, officials said.

Dzhaparova is also expected to meet Minister of State for External Affairs and Culture, Meenakshi Lekhi, and Deputy National Security Adviser, Vikram Misri.

The Hindu newspaper reported that the Ukrainian minister is expected&nbsp;to invite Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi to Kyiv&nbsp;and suggest New Delhi to invite President Volodymyr Zelensky to the G20 Summit in September.

“India shares warm and friendly relations and multifaceted cooperation with Ukraine. Over the last 30 years of establishing diplomatic relations, bilateral cooperation between the two countries has made significant progress in the areas of trade, education, culture and defence. The visit will be an occasion to further mutual understanding and interests," India’s Ministry of External Affairs said in a statement.

Additionally, the minister will also request more humanitarian aid, including pharmaceuticals, medical equipment, and energy equipment to repair power infrastructure damaged during the war, the newspaper reported.

The report further states that the Urainian minister, a former journalist, will call on India to send a "strong message for peace" to Russian President Vladimir Putin, who is due to visit India in July for Shanghai Cooperation Organisation (SCO) summit and is due back in September for G20 summit.

So far, India has taken a neutral stance in the Russia-Ukraine war, and has repeatedly urged both parties to shun violence and get back to the discussion table.

India has also abstained on all resolutions passed against Russia in the various UN bodies, including at the UN General Assembly. The latest one was passed by the UN human rights council on April 4 which extended the mandate of the commission of inquiry into alleged war crimes by Russia for a year.

Despite facing pressures from US and the West to follow its sanction model, India has remained steadfast in its foreign policy, and has refused to join either faction, the latter being the Russia-China axis.

Ukrainian minister to arrive Monday on first India visit since Russian invasion; seek G20 invite for Zelensky

Russia has faced resounding defeat in three separate votes in the United Nations.&nbsp;The loss which comes over a&nbsp;year into the Russia-Ukraine war bears witness to the fact that the international community maintains its opposition to Moscow's decision to invade&nbsp;Ukraine. Vladimir Putin's nation bore defeat during votes in the 54-member UN Economic and Social Council (ECOSOC). The first "resounding defeat" was at the hands of Romania for a seat on the Commission on the Status of Women. Estonia then beat Russia in&nbsp;the bid for the UN children's agency UNICEF's executive board. Furthermore, Armenia and the Czech Republic defeated Rusia in a secret ballot for membership in the Commission on Crime Prevention and Criminal Justice.

AFP reports that after Wednesday's votes, US Ambassador Linda Thomas-Greenfield remarked that the results are a "clear signal from ECOSOC members that no country should hold positions on critical UN bodies when they are in flagrant violation of the UN Charter."

While Russia faced defeat for the above-mentioned significant seats, in the voting for members of 14 commissions, boards and expert groups that ECOSOC oversees, the nation was elected to the Commission for Social Development by acclamation. Russia has faced resounding defeat in three separate votes in the United Nations. The loss which comes over a year into the Russia-Ukraine war bears witness to the fact that the international community maintains its opposition to Moscow's decision to invade Ukraine. Vladimir Putin's nation bore defeat during votes in the 54-member UN Economic and Social Council (ECOSOC). The first "resounding defeat" was at the hands of Romania for a seat on the Commission on the Status of Women. Estonia then beat Russia in the bid for the UN children's agency UNICEF's executive board. Furthermore, Armenia and the Czech Republic defeated Rusia in a secret ballot for membership in the Commission on Crime Prevention and Criminal Justice. AFP reports that after Wednesday's votes, US Ambassador Linda Thomas-Greenfield remarked that the results are a "clear signal from ECOSOC members that no country should hold positions on critical UN bodies when they are in flagrant violation of the UN Charter." Russia loses three UN elections over Ukraine war, its ‘flagrant violation of the UN Charter’

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky on Wednesday arrived in Poland, a close ally that has provided refuge to millions of Ukrainian citizens and has assisted the Kyiv government with vital weaponry. Soon after the leader's arrival, Marcin Przydacz, a senior official with the Polish presidency, while speaking to TVN24 television said that "the president has crossed the Polish border, he is on Polish territory." The visit comes as Ukraine readies to conduct a counter-offensive to recapture its land in the east and south from Russian control in the coming weeks or months.

Reuters reports that on his first visit to Poland, Volodymyr Zelensky has been awarded the nation's highest order, called the "Order of White Eagle".

Following the meeting, the two leaders held a press conference where Duda said that Poland will if the need arises, give its "whole remaining fleet of MiG-29s to Ukraine".

"I think that in the future we will be able to transfer our whole remaining fleet of MiG-29s to Ukraine if there is still such a need," said Duda.

The Polish president said that given that the remaining fighter jets in Poland's possession had been "adapted to NATO standards", the move would require a green light from NATO allies.

He specified that Poland would be able to pass on its MiG-29s to Ukraine as they get the new South Korean FA-50 fighter jets as well as the US-made F-35 stealth jets that have been ordered.

During his latest rare trip outside of Ukraine, Zelensky will also meet with Polish Prime Minister Mateusz Morawiecki.

As per AFP, he will also deliver remarks in the historic centre of the Polish capital, Warsaw.&nbsp;

Russia-Ukraine war: Zelensky to visit Poland on Wednesday

The United States may announce a fresh $2.6 billion military aid package for war-torn Ukraine. Quoting three&nbsp;US officials in the know, Reuters reports that the military aid package to help Kyiv in its war against Russian aggression is expected to be announced on Monday and could include air surveillance radars, anti-tank rockets and fuel trucks. The list of equipment will be finalised over the weekend, and the dollar amount or the specifics of the equipment to be donated could still change, said one of the officials on the condition of anonymity.

As per the official, the final list of equipment could include half a dozen types of munitions, including tank munition.&nbsp;

Russia-Ukraine war | US to announce $2.6 billion military aid package for Kyiv

The US on Tuesday said it will stop exchanging with Russia some data on its nuclear forces. The move is a response to Moscow suspending its participation in the New START nuclear arms treaty. Since "Russia has not been in full compliance and refused to share data which we ... agreed in New START to share biannually," the US has "decided to likewise not share that data,"&nbsp;John Kirby, the National Security Council Coordinator for Strategic Communications, told reporters.

In retaliation to Russia pulling back from New START treaty, US decides to withhold nuclear data

A Japanese university student attended his graduation ceremony dressed as Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky to “express solidarity” with the country.

Wearing an olive coloured shirt and khaki pants—a symbolic attire that has become synonymous with the Ukrainian leader— the student, identified as Amiki Yomiuri, entered the campus, drawing attention from others.

Traditionally, university graduation ceremonies in Japan feature students wearing formal attire. But at Kyoto University, the students are allowed to wear whatever they want.

Notably, this was the first in-person graduation ceremony of the varsity in three years due to the COVID-19 pandemic.

"Since December, when I was growing out my beard, I was told I look like President Zelensky," Yomiuri was quoted as saying by the Japanese media.

He was also seen carrying signboards with messages of support and quotes from Zelensky's speech to US Congress in December 2022.

In the video from TV Osaka, Yomuiri said he respects Zelensky as “the real man among men.”

“We stand for Ukraine! Justice will prevail in the end, I hope so. Glory to Ukraine,” he tweeted.

He was also spotted holding a wooden rice serving spoon, called shamoji, similar to the one presented to Zelensky by Japanese Prime Minister Fumio Kishida during his visit to Kyiv last week, according to DailyMail.com.

The rice paddle is a speciality of Hiroshima, where Kishida is from. and bears a prayer for victory. However, the gift was severely criticised by the opposition lawmakers who termed it as “nonsense.”

The student also agreed with the criticism that the giving a rice serving spoon to the leader of a country at war “wasn’t appropriate”.

“Nonetheless, I´m happy if the Ukrainian people were pleased and the traditional prayer behind it was conveyed,” he was quoted as saying.

Traditionally, university graduation ceremonies in Japan feature students wearing formal attire. But at Kyoto University, the students are allowed to wear whatever they want. Notably, this was the first in-person graduation ceremony of the varsity in three years due to the COVID-19 pandemic. He was also seen carrying signboards with messages of support and quotes from Zelensky's speech to US Congress in December 2022.
