Facebook had a tool to weed out fake news circulating on the social network this year but declined to deploy it for fear of offending conservatives, a report said on Monday.

The report by the online news site Gizmodo comes with Facebook under fire for allowing hoaxes and misinformation to go viral and, according to some critics, boost the efforts of Republican Donald Trump in his successful presidential run.

Facebook denied the report.

Gizmodo, citing unnamed sources said to be knowledgeable about Facebook's decision-making, said the tool was shelved after a controversy over reports saying the social network suppressed some conservative voices in its "trending topics" earlier this year.

"They absolutely have the tools to shut down fake news," Gizmodo quoted one source as saying. "There was a lot of fear about upsetting conservatives after (the uproar over) trending topics."

A Facebook statement said that the claims made in the article were "not true".

"We did not build and withhold any News Feed changes based on their potential impact on any one political party," the statement from Facebook said.

"We always work to make News Feed more meaningful and informative, and that includes examining the quality and accuracy of items shared, such as clickbait, spam and hoaxes."

Facebook chief Mark Zuckerberg has rejected the idea that bogus stories shared at the social network paved a path of victory for Trump.

"The idea that fake news on Facebook, which is a very small amount of the content, influenced the election in any way I think is a pretty crazy idea," Zuckerberg said during an on-stage chat at Technonomy, a technology trends conference in California.

In a weekend posting, Zuckerberg said dealing with hoaxes and fake news is complex.

"This is an area where I believe we must proceed very carefully," he said.

"Identifying the 'truth' is complicated. While some hoaxes can be completely debunked, a greater amount of content, including from mainstream sources, often gets the basic idea right but some details wrong or omitted."

Bogus election results

The notion of hoaxes and fake news remained a topic of debate on Monday, when internet users searching on Google were delivered a bogus report saying Trump won the popular vote in addition to the Electoral College.

The numbers on a blog called 70News, contradicting official results tallied so far by states, said Trump received 62.9 million votes to 62.2 million for Hillary Clinton.

The blog urged those petitioning for the Electoral College to switch their votes to reflect popular will to scrap their effort.

"Hey Change.org, scrap your loony petition now," the posting said.

The bogus site was listed at the top of many search queries for "final election result".

Preliminary tallies showed Clinton won roughly 700,000 more votes than Trump despite losing the states needed for an Electoral College victory.

Google seeks "to provide the most relevant and useful results for our users", a company statement to AFP said.

"In this case, we clearly didn't get it right, but we are continually working to improve our algorithms."

Lest anyone fear that Trump would find his impending ascension to the most powerful office in the world a too-dignified perch from which to freely use social media, the bombastic businessman disabused them of the notion.

Trump, who has credited the role of social media in his shock victory, had indicated he would scale back on his Twitter use as president.

"I'm going to do very restrained, if I use it at all," Trump said of the social media platform in his first sit-down interview since the election which will air in full on CBS's "60 Minutes" on Sunday night.

But even as he vowed to exercise restraint, he trumpeted the virtues of a tool that allowed him to bypass the mainstream media in getting his insurgent message to voters.

Donald Trump back to tweeting with abandon, takes dig at US publication

While the world comes to terms with Donald Trump winning the presidency, there's a lot of optimism in Russian circles about the surprise outcome of the US elections.

Even as Russian president Vladimir Putin welcomed Trump's win, his closest political advisor and political analyst Sergei Markov told The Guardian Russia may have played a role in the WikiLeaks scandal. "Maybe we helped a bit with WikiLeaks,” the pro-Kremlin analyst was quoted as saying. Russia has been openly accused of interfering in the elections in favour of Donald Trump. Russian authorities were accused of hacking Democratic party emails that were leaked to WikiLeaks before the US elections.

The Russian government also revealed today that it maintained contact with representatives from Trump and Hillary Clinton's presidential campaigns. "During this entire period, we not only sent some signals through some representatives, or private messages," Russian Foreign Ministry spokeswoman Maria Zakharova was quoted as saying by CNN.

Putin spokesman Dmitry Peskov told The Associated Press that Russian experts had contacts with people in both the Trump and Clinton campaigns. He said such contacts are "quite natural, quite normal."

The Clinton camp had repeatedly accused Trump of maintaining ties with Russia during the elections.

Makrov, however, denied that Russia interfered in the elections.

And while he hoped that US and Russia would find common ground on Ukraine and in Syria, he warned about the "macho" personalities of the two world leaders.

“Putin is a macho, Trump is also a macho. Maybe it could be a problem,” Markov, the pro-Kremlin analyst said.

Another Trump fan was optimistic that the former businessman would bring his pragmatism to politics.

A source close to the Kremlin told The Guardian, "The political space for every US president is quite narrow because a lot of the momentum is in the mentality of military people, secret services and politicians around the president. But it is obvious that Trump, as a former businessman, will be much more pragmatic and won’t be a hostage of the mistakes previously and generously made by Bush, Clinton, Bush, Obama.”

Alexei Venediktov, the editor-in-chief of Russia’s liberal Echo of Moscow radio, told Guardian that while some in the Kremlin were probably celebrating, other “more serious” people realised there were unpredictable times ahead.

Relations between the US and Russia have reached a new low over the past two years, due to differences over Syria and Ukraine.

While his policy makers are cautiously optimistic, President Putin hopes for “fully-fledged relations” after the election results were announced.

“Clearly the chances of sanctions being lifted on Russia have risen substantially,” the Guardian quoted Renaissance Capital’s global chief economist Charles Robertson as saying. “That would improve the investment climate for Russia.”

Trump drives Californians towards secession: NYT

Build a wall, make nice with Moscow, tear up free trade deals and force Washington's allies to pay more for their own security. OK, and then what?

Beyond a few broad isolationist and protectionist strokes, President-elect Donald Trump has not painted a detailed picture of his foreign policy.

Now, with just ten weeks until he takes command of the world's sole superpower, Washington's friends and foes are seeking clues to his agenda.

And if it seems vague, perhaps that's intentional. In speech after campaign speech, Trump insisted on the virtue of "the element of surprise".

In January, Trump was asked whether as president he would bomb Iran's nuclear sites instead of relying on a negotiated deal to keep them mothballed.

"I want to be unpredictable," Trump said, insisting that US voters' would support, as they eventually did, his shoot-from-the-hip style.

In the closing stages of his presidential campaign, Trump repeatedly mocked the ongoing US-backed Iraqi campaign to liberate the city of Mosul.

Why had President Barack Obama's generals flagged up the siege four months in advance, giving the Islamic State group warning on the assault?

"What a group of losers we have," he said on Saturday, as Iraqi and Kurdish forces backed by US advisers and air power closed in on the city.

"We need different thinking in this country, folks. They should have kept their mouths shut."

Generals might argue that building a coalition while preparing supply lines and refugee reception areas could not have been carried out in the dark.

Hardline rhetoric

But Trump is adamant, citing his experience negotiating property deals and luxury branding, that being unpredictable can be a plus.

"He doesn't have a foreign policy track-record to explore," wrote former CIA and NSA director Michael Hayden wrote for online journal The Cipher Brief.

"So that leaves pretty much the campaign rhetoric to rely on. And campaign rhetoric historically gets softened by the realities of office."

Trump's rhetoric is certainly aggressive.

This time last year, his prescription for the Islamic States was simple: "I would bomb the shit out of them. I'd just bomb those suckers."

But he is not a neoconservative, with grand plans to remake the world in America's image through military adventurism and coercive diplomacy.

Despite evidence that he supported it at the time, Trump insists that former president George W Bush's invasion of Iraq was a terrible mistake.

He has touted a form of great power politics, "making deals" with US rivals to unite against threats like "radical Islamic extremism."

"Wouldn't it be nice if we actually got along with Russia and China and all these countries?" Trump said in January. "Wouldn't it be nice?"

Allies like Japan, South Korea, Saudi Arabia and European NATO members will have to pay their way, however, Trump has no time for free riders.

Climate 'hoax'

Trump's presidency will apparently be much more skeptical of free trade, believing export powers like China are stealing American jobs and capital.

He has threatened to tear up existing deals like the North American Free Trade Area, forcing Mexico to pay export tariffs to pay for his border wall.

He would drive a hard bargain in talks on trans-Atlantic and trans-Pacific trade deals, and take China to task for alleged currency manipulation.

Trump has also made noises about reauthorising US agents to use torture that have spread concern among allies and intelligence leaders themselves.

Last year, the United States and around 180 countries signed a landmark deal to slow climate change, an idea Trump has dubbed "a hoax."

Iran has expressed concern that he would try to make good on a threat to rip up the nuclear agreement it signed last year with six world powers.

And Syrian refugees may no longer find safe haven in the United States, Trump having deemed them too great a risk of extremist violence.

In short, almost all of Nobel peace laureate Obama's foreign policy legacy is at risk, even his successful effort to normalize ties with communist Cuba.

But, once in the White House and advised by the National Security Council, State Department and US Trade Representative will Trump follow through?

Who knows? He's unpredictable.

Nobody really knows. His usual answer is, 'I want to be unpredictable'

(AFP)

Trump: What exactly will the new president do?

Despite sex assault allegations hounding him, fat-shaming a former beauty queen and his controversial abortion stand, a large number of women voters helped put Donald Trump in the White House.

Though his rival, Democratic candidate Hillary Clinton, clinched 54 per cent of the female vote, Trump was backed by 42 per cent of women voters, which contributed to his stunning victory, according to CNN exit polls.

Some 53 per cent of white women voters supported the Republican candidate, CNN said, the majority of them (62 per cent) non-college educated.

The results upended predictions that sexist and degrading comments Trump made against women would sway female voters, who accounted for about 52 percent of the electorate on Tuesday, in favour of a candidate that could have broken the glass ceiling.

Experts said the outcome is not surprising, and reflects an election in which issues about the economy, jobs and immigration were much higher on all voters' priority list than gender issues.

"At the heart of it is what was driving all voters," said Diane Heith, professor and chair of the Department of Government and Politics at St John's University in New York.

Heith said although the leaked Access Hollywood tape in which Trump boasted about groping women, and his disparaging comments about a former Miss Universe had made many women cringe, it was not enough to turn them against the candidate.

"There was no sisterhood created," Heith said. "The issue of how he treated women did not overshadow the attitudes these individuals already had, being disaffected and how they had been treated by the establishment elite of which Hillary was absolutely part of."

Tough to cope

Still, the real estate magnate's shock win has left many women struggling to cope with the election of a president whose misogynistic behavior was disregarded at the polls.

"More than half of white women voted for the man who bragged about committing sexual assault on tape, who said he would appoint Supreme Court justices who would overturn Roe vs Wade, who has spent 30-plus years in the public eye reducing women to their sexual attributes," wrote LV Anderson in an article in the online current affairs magazine Slate.

"White women sold out their fellow women, their country, and themselves last night," added the author. "Most white women don’t want to be part of an intersectional feminist sisterhood. Most white women just want to be one of the guys. And we will all suffer for it."

One issue of particular concern for women, both Democrats and Republicans, will be how Trump deals with abortion rights while in the White House.

Trump moved further and further to the right on abortion during his campaign, at one point, suggesting that women who seek to terminate their pregnancy should be subject "to some form of punishment" should abortion be outlawed.

He backtracked on his remarks following an outcry. But it's unclear where he really stands on the issue, especially considering his running mate Mike Pence's views on abortion.

As governor of Indiana, Pence pushed for some of the most abortion-restrictive regulations in the country and has fought to defund Planned Parenthood, which offers reproductive health services, including abortions, to mostly lower-income Americans.

'Angry white women'

"American women who are seeking reproductive freedom should be concerned about a Trump-Pence presidency," Heith said.

Juliet Williams, professor of gender studies at the University of California, Los Angeles, said Trump's shocking win could be attributed to a disconnect, both among Republicans and Democrats, when it came to women's voting.

"A narrative about this election took hold very early on and that narrative was that Trump was mobilizing the angry white man vote, with angry white men (such as) coal miners in West Virginia or unemployed auto workers in Michigan," Williams said.

"Frankly, all of us on the right and the left really should have wondered what the angry white vote means," she added.

"What we learned yesterday is that angry white women have political power too ... and if you allow yourself to forget about women, you are going to lose. This is what happened to Hillary."

Trump did well with women voters despite sex assault allegations

President Barack Obama hosted president-elect Donald Trump in the Oval Office Thursday for ensuring a smooth transition of power after the New York real estate tycoon's stunning victory in the presidential elections.

Obama described their meeting as 'excellent conversation' and he looked forward to working with him. He also vowed to "do everything we can" to help Trump succeed.

Trump arrived at his soon-to-be home on Pennsylvania Avenue at roughly 11:00 am (1600 GMT), a US official told AFP.

The US president and his successor have shared an uneasy equation, with Trump questioning Obama's origins and Obama in turn describing the celebrity businessman as "uniquely unqualified" to be president.

After Trump's win, Obama asked Americans to back Trump and said they should now be "rooting" for his success.

The president elect's Democratic rival, Hillary Clinton, urged the country to give Trump a chance. She also spoke about healing the deep divisions in American society.

"We owe him an open mind and the chance to lead," Hillary Clinton said in her concession speech on Wednesday.

On Wednesday, Trump huddled at Trump Tower in New York with a group of advisers, planning a transition strategy to take over stewardship of the world's largest economy. His team unveiled a website that highlights the human resource challenge facing the incoming administration under the headline "Help wanted: 4,000 presidential appointees."

The site also invites the public to share ideas on "Making America Great Again."

In the course of his campaign, Trump has pledged to deport illegal immigrants, ban Muslims from the country and tear up free-trade deals.

His populist rhetoric has gone down well with a majority of Americans.

Not everyone is happy, however. Thousands of demonstrators carried out marches across the countries protesting Trump's surprise win, accusing the incoming leader of racism, sexism and xenophobia.

Obama hosts Trump at White House, vows to do 'everything we can' to help him

As demonstrators marched in cities across the United States on Wednesday to protest against Republican Donald Trump's surprise US presidential election win, two incidents of violence were reported from the country. The shootings were, however, not directly related to the anti-Trump demonstrations.

Two police officers were shot early on Thursday in southwestern Pennsylvania, local media reported. One of the officers succumbed to injuries later in the day.

Police told residents to stay inside their houses as they searched for the shooter after the attack in Canonsburg, Pennsylvania, about 25 miles (40 km) southwest of Pittsburgh.

One of the officers was flown to a hospital in Pittsburgh and the other was taken by ambulance to a hospital in Canonsburg, WPXI.com reported.

In another incident, a gunman opened fire in downtown Seattle on Wednesday night following an argument and wounded five people, one man critically, not far from protests over the surprise victory of Republican Donald Trump in the US presidential election.

The shooting stemmed from "some type of personal argument", Robert Merner, assistant chief of the Seattle Police Department, told reporters.

In New York, thousands of protesters filled streets in midtown Manhattan as they made their way to Trump Tower, Trump's gilded home on Fifth Avenue. Hundreds of others gathered at a Manhattan park and shouted "Not my president."

Protesters threw objects at police in riot gear and smashed windows at a CVS drug store in Oakland, California. Police responded by throwing chemical irritants at the protesters, according to a Reuters witness.

In downtown Chicago, an estimated 1,800 people gathered outside the Trump International Hotel and Tower, chanting phrases like "No Trump! No KKK! No racist USA."

Chicago police closed roads in the area, impeding the demonstrators' path. There were no immediate reports of arrests or violence there.

"I'm just really terrified about what is happening in this country," said 22-year-old Adriana Rizzo in Chicago, who was holding a sign that read: "Enjoy your rights while you can."

In Seattle, police responded to a shooting with multiple victims near the scene of anti-Trump protests. Police said the shooting was unrelated to the demonstrations.

Protesters railed against Trump's campaign pledge to build a wall along the border with Mexico to keep immigrants from entering the United States illegally.

Hundreds also gathered in Philadelphia, Boston and Portland, Oregon, on Wednesday evening, and organisers planned rallies in San Francisco, Los Angeles and Oakland, California.

In Austin, the Texas capital, about 400 people marched through the streets, police said.

A representative of the Trump campaign did not respond immediately to requests for comment on the protests. Trump said in his victory speech he would be president for all Americans, saying: "It is time for us to come together as one united people."

Earlier this month, his campaign rejected the support of a Ku Klux Klan newspaper and said that "Mr. Trump and his campaign denounces hate in any form."

'Dreamers' fear deportation

Earlier on Wednesday, some 1,500 students and teachers rallied in the courtyard of Berkeley High School, in a San Francisco Bay Area city known for its liberal politics, before marching toward the campus of the University of California, Berkeley.

Hundreds of high school and college students also walked out in protest in Seattle, Phoenix, Los Angeles and three other Bay Area cities - Oakland, Richmond and El Cerrito.

A predominantly Latino group of about 300 high school students walked out of classes on Wednesday morning in Los Angeles and marched to the steps of City Hall, where they held a brief but boisterous rally.

Chanting in Spanish: "The people united will never be defeated," the group held signs with slogans such as "Not Supporting Racism, Not My President" and "Immigrants Make America Great."

Many of those students were members of the "Dreamers" generation, children whose parents entered the United States with them illegally, school officials said, and who fear deportation under a Trump administration.

"A child should not live in fear that they will be deported," said Stephanie Hipolito, one of the student organizers of the walkout. She said her parents were U.S. citizens.

There were no immediate reports of arrests or violence.

Wednesday's demonstrations followed a night of protests in the San Francisco area and elsewhere in the country in response to Trump's victory against heavily favored Democratic rival Hillary Clinton.

Demonstrators smashed storefront windows and set garbage and tires ablaze late on Tuesday in downtown Oakland.

Thousands take to streets of US cities to protest against Trump victory

Iran's President Hassan Rouhani said on Wednesday that the US election results would have no effect on Tehran's policies, state news agency IRNA quoted him as
saying, noting that Iran's expanding economic ties with the world were irreversible.

"The results of the US election have no effect on the policies of the Islamic Republic of Iran," Rouhani said.

"Iran's policy for constructive engagement with the world and the lifting of nuclear-related sanctions have made our economic relations with all countries expanding and irreversible."

He added that Iran's nuclear deal with six world powers has been reflected in a United Nation Security Council resolution and cannot be dismissed by one government.

US President-elect Donald Trump should stay committed to the international nuclear deal with Iran, Iranian foreign minister Mohammad Javad Zarif was quoted as saying by Tasnim news agency on Wednesday.

"The United States should fulfill its commitments in the Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action (the nuclear deal) as a multilateral international agreement," Zarif was quoted as saying while on a visit to Romania.

Rouhani said there was "no possibility" of its nuclear deal with world powers being overturned by US president-elect Donald Trump despite his threat to rip it up.

"Iran's understanding in the nuclear deal was that the accord was not concluded with one country or government but was approved by a resolution of the UN Security Council and there is no possibility that it can be changed by a single government," Rouhani told his cabinet, according to state television.

Last year's accord with world powers saw international sanctions on Iran lifted in exchange for guarantees that it would not pursue a nuclear weapons capability.
During the election campaign, Trump described the deal as "disastrous" and said it would be his "number one priority" to dismantle it.

"The United States no longer has the capacity to create Iranophobia and to create a consensus against Iran," Rouhani said.

"The constructive engagement policies of Iran towards the world, and the fact that international sanctions have been lifted, have placed the Iranian economy on a road where there is no possibility of going backwards."

Iran's Rouhani says Trump election has no effect on Tehran policies

"I'm very afraid, will there be more wars? Will America attack Muslim countries again?" asked Indonesian activist Alijah Diete as Donald Trump headed to victory in the US election.

Muslims across Asia were struggling Wednesday to accept the news that the populist politician who has made fiery anti-Islamic rhetoric a key part of his campaign was likely to become president of the world's greatest power.

He made his most controversial remarks about Islam in December last year, sparking anger among the world's 1.5 billion followers of Islam when he called for a ban on Muslims entering the United States after a mass shooting in California.

“Americans have just screwed the world yet again,” said Syed Tashfin Chowdhury, a Bangladeshi who has several close friends in the US. Thousands in the country watched in shock as the results rolled in and Facebook lit up with horrified reactions.

A senior Pakistani government official, speaking anonymously, called the news "absolutely atrocious and horrifying" while others in the country also lamented the results.

"I am disappointed to see Donald Trump winning because Hillary Clinton is a good woman, she is good for Pakistan and Muslims all over the world," said Ishaq Khan, 32, speaking at an Islamabad market.

"She was talking about world peace --- but Trump was talking about fighting against Muslims."

'Muslims are foreigners to him'

In Indonesia, the world's most populous Muslim-majority country, there was growing nervousness about how the relationship with traditional ally the United States would shape up, and how a Trump presidency would affect relations between America and the Muslim world.

"I am very concerned that the relationship between the US and Muslim countries will become tense again," said the female Muslim activist Diete, 47.

Nikken Suardini, who works for a law firm in the capital Jakarta, was concerned about the proposed Muslim ban. "If he is elected president he will block Muslims from entering the US --- well, that's just not fair."

There was also concern that tough anti-Islamic policies under Trump could fan Muslim extremism globally at a time when the world is struggling with a growing threat of Islamic militancy.

"When the United States uses hard power, extremists gain a momentum," said Zuhairi Misrawi, an Islamic scholar from moderate Indonesian Islamic organisation Nahdlatul Ulama.

"Those who will be the happiest when Trump wins are ISIS," he said, referring by another name to the Islamic State group, which is struggling to hold onto its territory in Iraq and Syria in the face of a fierce military onslaught.

Some observers were more sanguine as the 70-year-old maverick appeared heading for the White House, hoping that his populist rhetoric was aimed at winning votes and would not be translated into tough xenophobic policies if he enters the White House.

"We hope that Trump's remarks against Muslims were only to boost his campaign and he will realise that Muslims are a large population in the US," said Tahir Ashrafi, a senior Pakistani government cleric.

Others echoed the concerns that his policies would likely discriminate against American Muslims.

"His policies against Muslims will be discriminative," said Munarman, a spokesman for Indonesian hardline group the Islamic Defenders' Front. "Muslims are foreigners to him."

US Election 2016: Shock and fear among Asian Muslims over Trump win

Donald Trump, now the 45th President of the United States to America, delivered his victory speech at the Hilton Hotel in Manhattan, New York.

He was gracious in his speech, congratulating his rival Hillary Clinton for a “very, very hard-fought campaign”.

'America will no longer settle for anything less than the best. We must reclaim our country's destiny and dream big and bold and daring'

Donald Trump, now the 45th President of the United States to America, delivered his victory speech at the Hilton Hotel in Manhattan, New York. He was gracious in his speech, congratulating his rival Hillary Clinton for a “very, very hard-fought campaign”. He struck a conciliatory, rather than divisive, note, saying he would bind the wounds of division and pledged to be president for all Americans. “I pledge to every citizen of our land that I will be president for all Americans, and this is so important to me,” Trump said during his speech. “For those who have chosen not to support me in the past, of which there were a few people, I'm reaching out to you for your guidance and your help so that we can work together and unify our great country,” he added. India: Sensex crashes, falls more than 1,500 points

The US dollar sank and stock markets slammed into reverse in wild Asian trade on Wednesday as every new exit poll in the US presidential election showed the race to be a nail-biter, sending investors stampeding to safe-haven assets.

Sovereign bonds and gold shot higher while the Mexican peso went into near free fall as investors faced the real possibility of a shock win by Republican Donald Trump.

As of 0307 GMT, Trump had 139 Electoral College votes to Democrat Hillary Clinton's 109. It takes 270 to win.

Markets fear a Trump victory could cause economic and global uncertainty, preventing the Federal Reserve from raising interest rates in December, as long expected.

The scale of the scare was clear in the Mexican peso, where the dollar surged over 7 per cent in the biggest daily move since the global financial crisis.

The peso has become a touchstone for sentiment on the election as Trump's trade policies are seen as damaging to its export-heavy economy.

But the story was very different against the safe-haven yen with the dollar shedding 2.4 per cent to 102.72 yen. The euro gained 1 per cent to $1.1130.

The South Korean authorities were thought to have intervened to steady their currency and dealers were wondering if central banks globally could step in to calm nerves.

Asian stocks first rose only to retreat more than 1 percent as the session wore on and more election results flooded in, while US stock futures surrendered modest gains and recoiled more than 3 per cent.

Trump takes narrow lead

With voting completed in more than two-thirds of the 50 US states, the race was too close to call in Ohio, Florida, North Carolina, Pennsylvania, New Hampshire and Virginia, states that could be vital to deciding who wins the presidency.

Trump held slight leads in Florida and Ohio, while Fox News projected Clinton would take Virginia.

Markets have tended to favour Clinton as a status quo candidate who would be considered a safe pair of hands at home on the world stage.

"In contrast, a Trump victory would trigger massive uncertainty that would likely undermine risk assets at least initially, which in turn could preclude a Fed rate hike this year," warned Michelle Girard, chief US economist at RBS.

Sovereign bonds flew ahead, pushing yields on 10-year US Treasury notes down sharply to 1.77 per cent. It had briefly touched a six-month high around 1.8960 per cent.

In share markets, MSCI's broadest index of Asia-Pacific stocks outside Japan swung to a loss of nearly 2, while the Nikkei sank 2.2 per cent.

In commodity markets, gold climbed to $1,308.00 an ounce as the dollar slid.

Oil turned tail, with US crude shedding $1.34 to $43.63 a barrel, while Brent fell $1.24 to $44.80.

Why Donald Trump's win is making world media 'dizzy'

Asian markets were on tenterhooks on Wednesday as early state exit polls in the US presidential election showed wins for both candidates and no clear trend as yet, causing a nervous shift back to safe haven assets.

Asian stocks and US stock futures edged 0.5 per cent higher in volatile trade, while the Dollar slipped on the Yen and Euro as investors hedged against the risk of a shock win by Republican Donald Trump.

Both Trump and Democrat Hillary Clinton scored early victories in their bitter race, with Trump winning as expected in conservative Indiana, Kentucky and West Virginia and Clinton capturing liberal Vermont.

The victories in the four states were long predicted and not especially significant in a national race where opinion polls show Clinton has an edge.

Much of the action was in the currency markets where the Mexican peso has become a touchstone for sentiment on the election as Trump's trade policies are seen as damaging to its export-heavy economy.

The dollar jumped 1.2 per cent on the peso as the early results were reported, after hitting its lowest in two months overnight.

The dollar backtracked 0.7 per cent on the safe haven yen to 104.48 Yen, while the Euro rose to $1.1048. Against a basket of currencies, the Dollar was off 0.2 per cent at 97.678.

Yields on 10-year US Treasury yields inched down to 1.849 per cent, after touching a high of 1.876 per cent.

In share markets, MSCI's broadest index of Asia-Pacific stocks outside Japan was still up 0.4 per cent, but the Nikkei rose 0.8 per cent.

Wall Street had added somewhat to Monday's stellar gains with the Dow ending up 0.4 per cent. The S&P 500 gained 0.38 per cent and the Nasdaq 0.53 per cent.

Shane Oliver, head of investment strategy at fund manager AMP Capital, said the most positive outcome for US equities would be a Clinton win with a split Congress.

"Historically, since 1927 US total share returns have been strongest at an average 16.7 per cent per year when there has been a Democrat president and Republican control of the House, the Senate or both."

The return only averaged 8.9 per cent when the Republicans controlled the presidency and Congress.

In commodity markets, gold edged up to $1,278.46 an ounce as the Dollar eased.

Oil took a knock from data showing a surprisingly large rise in crude stocks. US crude eased 19 cents to $44.79, while Brent was untraded early in the Asian day.

Dollar spooked in Asia as US polls too close to call

At the time of vioting, Donald Trump appeared skeptical of a demographic he thought was secure -- his wife. It wouldn't be his second or first wife to part ways from him, but Melania seemed like a bigtime MAGA enthusiast.

She had done so much for him this election: falsely post on her website she graduated from university, deliver and write a speech written and delivered by Michelle Obama, nobly defend her husband for saying he grabbed other women's vaginas without asking permission.

It was the customary American grooming for every First Lady before her. So why did Trump appear to doubt Melania when it mattered most?

Like father, like son

By sneaking a peak at his wife's ballot, Eric Trump also showed little faith his wife would vote horribly. He appeared to believe she might suddenly Stand With Her, or conscientiously throw her vote into the garbage by voting Stein or Johnson.

Over the course of the campaign two or three Sensitive Sallies were miffed by the Trump Campaign, only because Donald has been consistently racist sexist and a xenophobe who doesn't just lie a lot but has never said anything true despite talking ceaselessly on TV since 2014.

But this week, using the family's quintessential soft touch, Eric Trump surprised all by alienating a community leader and Trump devotee, saying KKK leader David Duke "deserves a bullet".

Luckily for them, while the Trump's have insulted about everyone in the world roughly half of America still backs them! Stay tuned to see if it's the bigger or smaller half.

Like father, like son By sneaking a peak at his wife's ballot, Eric Trump also showed little faith his wife would vote horribly. US Election 2016: Trump unsure Melania Trump will vote Trump

After a crushing defeat for the Democrats at the hands of Donald Trump, the 45th President of the United States of America, the current US President Barack Obama congratulated his newly-elected successor.

Obama called Trump to congratulate him on pulling off a stunning victory against his rival Hillary Clinton, who a day before the election was said to have a 70 per cent chance of winning.

The President's office said Obama invited Trump to the White House for talks on Thursday and is due to make a statement later Wednesday about the election results.

He also called Hillary Clinton, his one-time secretary of state and fellow Democrat, to express his "admiration for the strong campaign she waged throughout the country," White House press secretary Josh Earnest said in a statement.

Earlier in the day, Trump made his victory speech at the Hilton Hotel in Manhattan, New York.

"I pledge to every citizen of our land that I will be president for every American. And that is very important to me," Donald Trump told a jubilant crowd.

"For those that have chosen not to support me in the past, of which there were a few people, I'm reaching out to you for your guidance and you help so we can work together and unify our great country."

He was gracious to his rival, saying, "Hillary has worked very hard and very hard over a very long period of time and we owe her a major debt of gratitude for her service to this country."

"Now it is time for America to bind the wounds of division."

Local media reports said Hillary Clinton had called Trump to concede the presidency but that she would not be making a concession speech on Wednesday.

A stunning victory

Trump won Florida, Ohio, North Carolina, Iowa and New Hampshire -- states that were considered to be swing states -- while his rival Hillary Clinton faltered in these key states.

Trump won Florida by 130,000 votes, which imply that third-party votes harmed Clinton in her bid to win the crucial state. Third-party candidates Gary Johnson and Jill Stein won 260,000 votes in the state.

The win in the Sunshine state provided a major impetus for Trump during his stunning success.

The final blow to Clinton came when Trump won Pennsylvania well past midnight in New York.

Trump's early numbers put Clinton on the backfoot.

Clinton won in Virginia and banked on upper Midwestern states to shore up her numbers. She managed to stay in the race with California's 55 electoral seats.

Clinton also won three out of four electoral votes in Maine.

Hillary Clinton's campaign chairman, John Podesta thanked Hillary's supporters and asked them to go home. She would not be saying anything tonight.

The other states won by Clinton are New Mexico, Illinois, Connecticut, Vermont, Massachusetts, Maryland, New Jersey, Delaware and the District of Columbia. Trump has won Missouri, Nebraska, Louisiana, Mississippi, Alabama, Kentucky, Indiana, Oklahoma, Tennessee and West Virginia. But none of these are battleground states.

South Carolina caused a minor flutter in the Trump camp as early data showed Clinton to be in the lead. However, he later surged ahead to win the state, which has traditionally been a Republican firewall.

Trump also won Texas, Wyoming, Kansas, North Dakota and South Dakota, whereas Clinton has scooped New York.

US Election 2016: Who wears the pants?

Win or lose, Donald Trump's campaign has changed the way countries in Asia view their relationships with Washington.

Final opinion polls suggested the most likely outcome is a victory for Hillary Clinton. But even Clinton, an architect of the US strategic pivot to Asia, has some work ahead of her in rebuilding trust, analysts and former officials in Asia said.

"With or without Trump, this marks the end of US leadership, in particular, moral leadership," said a former Japanese diplomat, who asked not to be identified because of the sensitivity of the topic.

"I don't think it's a question of Trump as an individual, but a question of the US society that produced this man as the Republican candidate."

Trump upended US democratic traditions during his White House campaign, drawing enthusiastic crowds where people cheered his often provocative and outrageous remarks.

He described a dark America, knocked to its knees by China, Mexico and the Islamic state.

Trump's harnessing of a populist backlash against immigration and global trade has challenged the ideal of benevolent American power that helped shape the global economy - and the forces of globalisation - since the fall of the Soviet Union in the early 1990s.

Now the United States faces a rising China, long an economic force and now becoming more assertive in geopolitics - building its military capability and ignoring an international tribunal's ruling against its claims to most of the South China Sea.

Trans-Pacific partnership

Asia is most worried about trade protectionism - exports make up a quarter of Asia's GDP and a fifth of them go to the United States.

The Trans-Pacific Partnership (TPP) trade deal, championed by President Barack Obama in part to increase US influence in Asia, was to be an essential feature of Washington's strategic pivot to Asia - an "economic NATO".

It now looks dead in the water. Both Clinton and Trump oppose the deal, which would set up a free trade zone among 12 countries that excludes China.

With US allies such as Japan, South Korea, Taiwan and Singapore among the biggest winners of an open trade regime, a more isolationist and protectionist stance will cost Washington influence in Asia.

Ironically, it would be China, the subject of many of Trump's tirades, that could emerge the big winner as uncertainty over Washington's future commitment to Asia pushes countries into dealing more closely with Beijing.

"If the US pulls out of TPP, that will certainly increase China's influence in Asia," said Kanti Bajpai, Professor of Asian Studies at the Lee Kuan Yew School of Public Policy in Singapore.

"Already, US criticism of domestic issues in Thailand, the Philippines, and Malaysia has alienated those countries and caused them to lean towards Beijing. Pulling out of the TPP will help China geopolitically."

Philippine President Rodrigo Duterte has been particularly hostile towards Washington over its criticism of his lethal anti-drugs campaign, announcing a "separation" from the United States during last month's visit to China.
Malaysian Prime Minister Najib Razak came back from a visit to China last week with $34 billion worth of deals and an agreement to buy four Chinese naval vessels.

Security concerns

China has long been in Trump's sights, with promises to declare it a currency manipulator and impose punitive tariffs on imports. But any such moves could also hurt Asian exporters who ship components there for assembly and export to the United States, at a time when global trade is already weakening.

Gareth Leather, senior Asia economist at Capital Economics, said the Philippines, Taiwan and South Korea were the emerging Asia economies most vulnerable to a Trump presidency.

"Perhaps the biggest risk to the region's economies, however, stems not from Trump's trade policies, but from his foreign policy," Leather said.

Trump has created doubts over his commitment to security alliances, suggesting Japan and South Korea need to pay more for a US military presence and that they should even develop their own nuclear capability to counter China and North Korea.

Clinton, who was secretary of state when the Obama administration launched its Asia pivot, is expected to maintain Obama's foreign policy, with some seeing her as being more hawkish.

The divisive election campaign has caused severe damage to the reputation of the US in Asia, creating doubts over economic & security ties

"I don't think it's a question of Trump as an individual, but a question of the US society that produced this man as the Republican candidate." Trump upended US democratic traditions during his White House campaign, drawing enthusiastic crowds where people cheered his often provocative and outrageous remarks. Trans-Pacific partnership Asia is most worried about trade protectionism - exports make up a quarter of Asia's GDP and a fifth of them go to the United States. Pulling out of the TPP will help China geopolitically." Philippine President Rodrigo Duterte has been particularly hostile towards Washington over its criticism of his lethal anti-drugs campaign, announcing a "separation" from the United States during last month's visit to China. Malaysian Prime Minister Najib Razak came back from a visit to China last week with $34 billion worth of deals and an agreement to buy four Chinese naval vessels. Security concerns China has long been in Trump's sights, with promises to declare it a currency manipulator and impose punitive tariffs on imports. The divisive US presidential campaign has already done a lot of damage to the reputation of the United States in Asia, regardless of the election outcome, according to some analysts. "The broader question is whether the United States can assert global leadership," said Jesper Koll, CEO at fund manager WisdomTree Japan. "All my Chinese friends say, 'We thought we would run the world in 20 years. Now it's going to be in January'. This is not a joke. It's the natural state of development," Koll said (Reuters)

Asia sees changed US relationship, whoever wins

The US Supreme Court on Monday rejected an 11th-hour move by the Democratic Party in Ohio seeking to prevent Donald Trump supporters from carrying out certain actions that could be considered voter intimidation.

The legal battle, followed across the country because of its potential implications, had stemmed from Trump's assertions on the campaign trail, without providing evidence, that the election was likely to be "rigged" and that his supporters should watch polling sites on Tuesday.

Fearing this call would lead to Trump supporters intimidating voters, particularly minorities who are more likely to support Democrat Hillary Clinton, the Ohio Democratic Party filed a lawsuit and initially won their case in federal court on Friday.

US District Judge James Gwin had issued a ruling barring activities including following, questioning or photographing voters or their vehicles.

The Trump campaign appealed and won, with the Sixth Circuit US Court of Appeals in Cincinnati on Sunday suspending Gwin's order, saying the Ohio Democratic Party had not sufficiently substantiated their arguments.

On Monday, the shorthanded Supreme Court, with eight justices instead of the usual nine as Republicans have blocked President Barack Obama's nominee to replace the late conservative justice Antonin Scalia, sided with the appeals court.

In keeping with protocol, the high court is reluctant to intervene just before a national election.

Supreme Court Justice Ruth Bader Ginsburg said in a statement that she voted to deny the Democratic party's case because Ohio already has laws in place to stymie voter intimidation.

Trying to block or harass voters at the polls harkens back to the intimidation of black voters in modern US history, especially in the formerly segregated South.

After a bruising presidential campaign that has divided the country, thousands of independent observers will be fanning out Tuesday to ensure free and fair polling.

The US Justice Department said it would send more than 500 people to 28 states to observe the voting.

US Democrats lose suit seeking to bar voter intimidation

Ryan Lochte is to Michael Phelps in swimming what Hillary Clinton is to Donald Trump in polarising Americans. No major party nominee save for Trump has had such strong negative opinions since opinion polling began.

While the cause for voters’ distaste for the Republican nominee is clear, the strong degree of displeasure with secretary Clinton seems more elusive. Other candidates have committed blunders, been mired in scandal, held lengthy tenures, lied and changed views for political expediency, but rarely has an American politician been so reviled by so many, even within her own party. What is so different for Hillary Clinton?

First, the usual suspects: the Benghazi incident, regardless of her level of involvement, recklessness in using her email server, voting for the 2003 invasion of Iraq, achieving power because of her husband—disregarding her own accomplishments—and staying with her husband, for which she has been accused of everything from Machiavellian calculus to anti-feminism to Stockholm syndrome. There are the Wall Street speech fees and the Clinton Foundation donations, especially by foreign nationals, her biased judgment favoring rich donors, the accusations that she is either too liberal or too conservative, her being a woman and, finally, that she has been in politics too long and it is time for a change.

Perceived Inevitability

Each reason may put off some voters, and taken together they partly explain the polarization on display in the polls, but this is not the whole story. Many of these criticisms are not new and as recently as 2013 her approval rating was 67% and her negatives were as low as 26%—comparable to Barack Obama’s in 2008, according to The Washington Post/ABC poll.

There is one cause the media has largely ignored: her perceived inevitability in 2016. The early decision by party leaders to rally behind a candidate long before the first vote was cast in the Iowa caucus has made voters see her as chosen not by them, but by élites in smoke-filled rooms.

Frustrated leftists tried to rally around Bernie Sanders, an independent who surprised with his performance but never rose beyond a minority protest against the organized and disciplined Clinton campaign, even after a nigh-miraculous upset in the Michigan primary.

Centrist Democrats who would have preferred a more conservative choice also felt excluded from the process. Consider one demographic supporting Sanders: poor whites, including lifelong Democrats, in the heart of coal country, felt betrayed by the Obama administration’s aggressive approach to environmental regulation and saw Clinton as a continuation of his current policies, and thus voted for a left-wing candidate they might otherwise have never considered.

Obama 2.0

First, internal party conflict and then a “circular firing squad” of 17 Republican candidates allowing the rise of Trump have left many conservative Democrats and swing-voters without a viable alternative, choosing the lesser of two undesirables. A less divisive Republican nominee or a stronger opponent in the primaries would have made more Americans think of her as their choice rather than the establishment’s next-in-line. Would people be as anti-Hillary had she beaten Joe Biden in the primaries and been leading Bobby Jindal in the general election?

Add Obama’s popularity and anyone unhappy about electing Obama 2.0 can easily feel disenfranchised, particularly after Senator Sanders struggled to implicitly criticize the Obama administration and the Republican Party failed to rally around an alternative. In a world of Yelp reviews, reality-TV voting and instant social media feedback, voters have come to expect a feeling of empowerment. Factor in the echo-chamber effect of the blogosphere and Google and Facebook algorithms, and a Republican or a Sanders supporter may wonder how anyone could vote for Hillary at all.

Democracy is now more than ever about a feeling of empowerment, and many voters who think of her as an heir who has not earned their votes will fear she is not beholden to them, but to other identity groups, donors or party élites.

Anti-Hillary is not only about Hillary or her policies: They may well be good reasons, but not the primary ones. It is about the system she represents. Why is Hillary Clinton so unpopular?

Republican candidate Donald Trump might have just lost a vote from within his family. The morning of the crucial Election Day, Eric Trump tweeted a picture that appeared to be the vote for his father, Donald Trump.

“It is an incredible honor to vote for my father! He will do such a great job for the USA! #MakeAmericaGreatAgain,” the proud Trump scion tweeted.

But the vote is likely to be disqualified as New York is among the 18 states that have laws restricting the taking of photographs in voting booths or of completed ballots.

Last week, a Manhattan federal court judge ruled that the state law barring voters from taking photographs of marked ballots also applies to people sharing pictures of them on social media.

Eric Trump was not visible in the tweet himself but another tweet showed him leaving the polling site minutes after. The tweet was removed after a publication, Daily News inquired about the violation of law. The photograph could earn him a fine of $1000.

US election 2016: Eric Trump violates law, tweets Election Day ballot selfie

A Nevada judge on Tuesday rejected Republican presidential candidate Donald Trump's request for records from a Las Vegas polling place that the campaign said had allowed people to vote after a deadline last week.

Republican presidential candidate Donald Trump on Monday filed a lawsuit against the registrar of voters in Clark County, Nevada over keeping a polling station open beyond closing time on Friday, the final night of early voting.

The Trump campaign complained that the polling station in a Hispanic neighbourhood in Las Vegas had been "improperly kept open on the last night of early voting" and "accommodate people who were not in line when polls closed".

However, the law in Nevada, a key battleground state, allows people to cast their ballots if they are already waiting when the polls close. To close the polling centre for people who turned up before the cut off time would be tantamout to depriving them of their fundamental right to vote.

"Nothing happened that wasn't supposed to happen," Dan Kulin, a spokesman for Clark County told NBC News. "Voters who were in line by the scheduled closing time were allowed to vote."

Nevada judge rejects Trump request for order over early voting

In Southwest Miami, a district heavily populated with Latinos from several central and South American countries, Hillary Clinton supporters gathered for a pep talk before hitting the streets to canvass for votes in what every single one of them consider the most important presidential election ever.

Volunteers across Florida made a last-minute push to get voters to the polls ahead of Election Day on Tuesday, pitting Republican

Donald Trump against Democrat Hillary Clinton

The get-out-the-vote organizer tells the volunteers what's at stake.

"It's arguably the most important county in this election. We need Miami-Dade to vote for Hillary Clinton," he said. Across town in the the outskirts of Wynwood, Miami's art district, a massive mural depicts Donald Trump as a pig with a message reading, "When pigs fly."

Latino voters could have an outsized influence in Tuesday's election. Early voting data shows a jump in the number of Hispanic voters this year, especially in the key swing states of Nevada and Florida -- and Clinton would likely be the biggest beneficiary.

"We are seeing that in the numbers. We are seeing that particularly here with expanded voter registration here in Florida. We are also seeing it with early turnout to the polls. They are breaking records, not only here in Miami and Florida breaking records for early voter turnout but hispanic and latino turnout is coming in," said Elbert Garcia, the director of "Florida`s Voice", an immigration advocacy organisation.

In Florida, the Clinton campaign estimates early Latino voting is up 139 per cent, or more than twice as much, compared to 2012, according to a field report dated Wednesday.

Despite the surge in early voting, there is no certainty about which candidate people chose for president. There is also no guarantee that the higher Latino turnout rate will continue on Election Day and that they and other minority voters will make enough of a difference to swing Florida and other states.

But even within the minority, there is could be a divide in South Florida where Cuban-Americans, who historically side with Republican candidates, could side with Trump.

In Miami's Little Havana, dueling Clinton and Trump rallies took place Monday in front of a cafe, with supporters of both sides waving signs at on-coming traffic and arguing with each other.

"They (Latinos) are letting themselves be heard with the vote for the first time," said Ania Fresna, a Clinton supporter that says Cubans will side with Clinton.

"We will be winners tomorrow. We will drink champagne, we will eat papa frita (French Fries) and pollo (chicken) for Hillary," added Clinton supporter Carman Santos.

But Trump supporters are convinced that Cubans will continue to side with the more conservative Trump.

"I am as a woman Latina, and I don't think he (Donald Trump) has anything against Latinos. I think that he has a very good point of view which is the United States needs a boundary. It's time that everyone comes in the right way," said Linnette Lemar.

Polls show Clinton and Trump in a virtual dead heat in Florida.

"It's arguably the most important county in this election. We need Miami-Dade to vote for Hillary Clinton," he said. Across town in the the outskirts of Wynwood, Miami's art district, a massive mural depicts Donald Trump as a pig with a message reading, "When pigs fly." Latino voters could have an outsized influence in Tuesday's election. (Reuters)

White House candidate Donald Trump was bundled off stage by security officers Saturday after an apparently false gun scare during a campaign appearance.

US media cited law enforcement sources reporting that no gun had been found after a cry of alarm in the crowd, and Trump swiftly resumed his speech in Reno, Nevada.

The 70-year-old Republican tycoon reappeared just minutes after being led away by three Secret Service officers, who shielded his body with their own.

Trump rushed off stage, returns to finish speech

The state-owned media was seen aggressively pushing for Trump and showed reports that Clinton had the backing of 'oligarchic' corporations

As the race for the White House is hotting up, the Russian state-owned media is devoting most of its time elaborating Republican presidential candidate Donald Trump's allegations that his rival Democract candidate Hillary Clinton is corrupt and the "rigged elections". "Clinton has a choice. Either she gets the presidency or she goes behind bars," pro-Kremlin journalist Dmitry Kiselyov said during his flagship Sunday program on the state-controlled Vesti channel, news agency PTI reported. The state media did little to hide its preference in the upcoming US election, telling viewers that Clinton had the full backing of the US security services, "oligarchic" corporations and the media. Several other reports highlighted concerns about Clinton's health, linked her to sex scandals and suggested that the Democratic Party is "panicking" over recent polls, PTI said. However, the Russian President Vladimir Putin has repeatedly denied claims that the Kremlin would like to see Trump win the elections. But he did not fail to point out the string similarities between their positions on major foreign policy issues, including Syria and Ukraine. The Russian media is widely covering the presidential battle and is pushing for Trump's candidacy aggressively, according to a European Union official. (WION with inputs from PTI)

Russian media backs Trump, questions US democracy

Equity investors froze Friday at the prospect of a tight finish to the US presidential race, with the US S&P 500 (Standard and Poor's 500) sliding for the ninth straight session, its longest fall since 1980.

Investors took refuge in safe havens ahead of the weekend that could bring more surprises affecting the hot race between Democrat Hillary Clinton and Republican Donald Trump, and amid concerns a Trump victory could bring sharp shifts in US economic policy.

Gold prices rose, the dollar dropped and US bond yields fell despite solid US jobs market and trade data that pointed ever more to a rate hike by the Federal Reserve in December.

Tokyo stocks lost 1.3 per cent, London fell 1.4 per cent, and Paris and Frankfurt bourses slipped 0.8 percent and 0.7 percent, respectively, as caution reigned.

On Wall Street, losses were lighter, with selling coming at the end of the session, leaving just one trading day before the November 8 vote.

The three key indices all lost about 0.2 per cent, putting the S&P 500 down 3.1 per cent since its slide began.

"Not good, but not as bad as it sounds," given the relatively modest loss for such a streak, said Howard Silverblatt of S&P Global.

And Chris Low of FTN Financial said, "The last time the market was at this level was back in early July, right after the terrible Shanghai selloff.

"If we break through these levels technically, it could be a difficult month or two after that."

Clinton, who has promoted mostly continuity with the political, economic and tax policies of President Barack Obama, still leads Trump in the race. But the separation between the two has narrowed to two percentage points and the outcome of the vote could depend on a handful of swing states the candidates are battling for.

"Investors are clearly nervous or worried that there might be a big surprise Tuesday. That's the reason why the market's been drifting down," said Hugh Johnson of Hugh Johnson Advisors.

US economy shows strength

A solid US October jobs report gave more support for the Federal Reserve to raise rates in December. The economy added 161,000 jobs last month and the unemployment rate dipped to 4.9 per cent.

Fed Vice Chair Stanley Fischer said in a speech that the labor market is in a "powerful" recovery and that inflation is picking up, while not speaking directly to the Fed's next policy meeting in five weeks.

While this would normally strengthen the case for a Fed rate hike in December, much still hinges on Tuesday's vote, said John Higgins at Capital Economics.

"US monetary policy would be expected by many to remain looser for longer in the event of a win for Trump," he said.

Pound up on Brexit politics

The British pound though powered higher on Thursday's London court ruling that the British government would need parliamentary approval to officially move to pull out of the European Union.

The pound pushed up to $1.2519, its highest level in a month.

"The High Court ruling has introduced a whole new set of political uncertainties," Rabobank analyst Jane Foley told AFP.

"However, since most of these are seen as reducing the chances of a bitter divorce from the European Union's single market, the pound is better supported."

Oil prices meanwhile fell again amid talk Saudi Arabia may raise output again to bring prices down if Iran fails to agree to OPEC production cuts.

World stocks choke on US election fears, pound powers on

The states have been advised to boost security of voting and election systems to counter potential cyber threats

US federal and state authorities are beefing up cyber defences against potential electronic attacks on voting systems ahead of the Election Day on November 8. There has been no specific intelligence warning about a cyber threat but concerns remain that hackers from Russia and other actors could disrupt the process by spreading political misinformation online or perhaps tamper with voting. Homeland security department officials plan to hold a media briefing on Friday to discuss the agency's efforts with states to boost the security of their voting and election systems. All but two states have accepted help from the department to counter the cyber threat. The DHS will provide assistance in probing and scanning voter registration and election systems for vulnerabilities. Ohio has asked a cyber protection unit of the National Guard, a reserve force within the US military, for assistance to protect the state's systems. Officials say chances that a hack could alter election outcomes are remote but the states need to be vigilant after the FBI detected breaches in voter registration databases in Arizona and Illinois. The potential for violence around the election has loomed in the background of the campaign for months. Voter intimidation reported at polling sites so far prompted Democrats to accuse Trump of a "campaign of vigilante voter intimidation" in four states on Monday. But local authorities surveyed by Reuters on Thursday in five states - Ohio, Pennsylvania, Arizona, Wisconsin and Florida - said they were not increasing election-related law enforcement personnel or resources above 2012 levels. US intelligence agencies warn states against election fraud

A week short of the presidential poll in the US, Hillary Clinton has released a new advertisement. Building up on the deluge of sexual harassment accusations against Donald Trump, the ad highlights his attitude towards women. In her speeches and social media engagement, Clinton has been steadily building a case against Trump on the basis of the accounts of his alleged victims as well as own statements.

As much as fourteen women have gone on record to say that they were sexually harassed by Trump at some point in their lives. The Republican candidate also has an upcoming hearing for a child rape case against him. On a recent TV show, Trump’s campaign manager Kellyane Conway refused to acknowledge on the rape case as a serious concern. She has also predicted that Trump will win as the undecided voter has now decided against Clinton. FBI Director James Comey’s announcement about the existence of a new batch of emails with a connection to Clinton’s server seems to have rocked her campaign trail a bit.

Will leveraging herself as an upholder of women’s rights and dignity give Clinton the much-needed thrust to outscore her Republican counterpart? How does Clinton’s own track record on this issue during her husband’s presidency play out now?

I have a mixed opinion on this one. The cases about sexual harassment are indeed hampering his prospects but mainly only in cases of undecided voters. It's sad but one continues to see many Trump women supporters persistently cheering for him despite his misogynistic views and actions. However, one needs to realise that it is the swing states and swing voters who can make or break the Nov 8 election. It is in this context women voters can make a huge difference and showcase their power as an electoral base. As Michelle Obama said, "High time women stand up and say, enough is enough!"

However, one needs to realise that it is the swing states and swing voters who can make or break the Nov 8 election. It is in this context women voters can make a huge difference and showcase their power as an electoral base. As Michelle Obama said, "High time women stand up and say, enough is enough!" Nilanjana Roy, Novelist @nilanjanaroy There has been an attitudinal shift in the society. It is difficult to get away with impunity. People like Trump are increasingly being held accountable for their misdemeanours. Victim shaming is not all that rampant and those indulging in it are getting called out. Yes, Hillary is hawkish. But that’s how most politicians are. This is a time in the history of the USA where somebody like her is needed. A purely leftist candidate will not be able to handle a fast polarising world. Rana Safvi, Historian @iamrana Yes, I think the harassment charges are going to significantly mar Trump’s prospects. Atiya Zaidi, Publisher @atiyaz Ultimately, and sadly, not much. Vidyut, Blogger, Entrepreneur @vidyut It is a toss-up. But I think Trump is a lot like (Narendra) Modi. His core voter base is unlikely to be bothered by bad revelations about him.
