Some parts of Kansas and Missouri in the United States faced volatile weather on Wednesday night (Mar 13) as storms brought massive chunks of hail into the city.

The National Weather Service issued a severe thunderstorm warning for the Kansas City metro area and added that the area is likely to witness a storm which will bring hail as big as softballs or baseballs.

“If you are in this warning, get away from windows and shelter inside now!!!” posted the National Weather Service on X, formerly known as Twitter.

The weather service stated that the storm had earlier produced “softball-sized hail". Taking to X, the National Weather Service said that traffic has been halted for the time being in one part of Interstate 70 because of the weather.

The National Weather Service issued various tornado warnings in the areas around Topeka as severe thunderstorm warnings were issued for northeast of Kansas City in Missouri.

Senior meteorologist at AccuWeather, Alex Sosnowski said that the predicted hail appeared like “gorilla hail” due to its potential of being huge in size.

What is gorilla hail?

The term “gorilla hail” has been coined by Reed Timmer, who is a storm chaser and claims to be an extreme meteorologist, said Sosnowski.

The term has been given because some hail, falling in north-central Kansas and north-central Missouri, can be as big as a baseball, he said.

SpaceX CEO Elon Musk extended his support to former president Donald Trump in denouncing a potential ban on the Chinese app TikTok, which is popular among the youth in the US.

Lawmakers have been discussing a measure which will force Chinese company ByteDance to sell TikTok in the US by September 30. President Joe Biden said he would sign the bill if it is cleared by US Congress.

In the wake of legislation likely to be passed by Congress this week, Musk took to his social media platform X, formerly Twitter, and said the bill will amount to "censorship and government control".

“This law is not just about TikTok, it is about censorship and government control! If it were just about TikTok, it would only cite “foreign control” as the issue, but it does not,” he wrote on X.

Musk also re-shared a post of Representative Thomas Massie, who had spoken up against the potential TikTok ban, calling it a 'Trojan horse' that will only empower the president to ban not only apps but also websites.

What did Trump say about the TikTok ban?

Musk's comments follows Trump's opposition to the TikTok ban.

Trump noted that lots of kids 'will go crazy' without the Chinese-owned video-sharing platform which is being seen as a national security threat for the US due to alleged links to the Communist Party as well as concerns over user data sharing and privacy.

Trump, who himself in 2020 tried to ban TikTok, also said that if the proposal is implemented, it will give unfair advantages to Facebook owner Meta.

"There's a lot of good and there's a lot of bad with TikTok, but the thing I don't like is that without TikTok, you're going to make Facebook bigger, and I consider Facebook to be an enemy of the people, along with a lot of the media," he told CNBC.

The United States has announced a new military package worth $300 million for Ukraine after figuring out some cost savings in its contracts.

The new military aid package was announced by the United States on Tuesday (Mar 12) although the military has remained overdrawn and requires at least $10 billion for replenishing all the weapons which it had provided Kyiv from its stocks amid its ongoing war with Russia.

United States National Security Advisor Jake Sullivan said that the funding was being provided to Ukraine after making unanticipated cost savings from Pentagon contracts and these funds will be used for artillery rounds and munitions for High Mobility Artillery Rocket Systems (HIMARS).

"This ammunition will keep Ukraine's guns firing for a period, but only a short period," said Sullivan, while speaking to the reporters, and added that it may only be helpful to Ukraine for a couple of weeks.

Pentagon Press Secretary Major General Pat Ryder said that the aid package included artillery rounds and anti-aircraft missiles.

He added that giving weapons to Ukraine through contract savings is a one-time situation and not a sustainable way to provide funding to Kyiv.

Russian President Vladimir Putin on Wednesday (Mar 13) warned the West that the country was technically prepared for nuclear war and that if the United States sent its troops to Ukraine, it would lead to a significant escalation.

Speaking days ahead of the March 15-17 election in which Putin is certain to clinch victory and remain in power for the next six years, the Russian president said that the nuclear war scenario was not "rushing" up and as of now there is no need of using nuclear weapons in Ukraine.

"From a military-technical point of view, we are, of course, ready," said Putin, while speaking to Rossiya-1 television and news agency RIA when asked if the country was prepared for a nuclear war.

"(In the United States) there are enough specialists in the field of Russian-American relations and in the field of strategic restraint," said Putin.

"Therefore, I don't think that here everything is rushing to it (nuclear confrontation), but we are ready for this," he added.

Ex-Donald Trump adviser Peter Navarro has been ordered to report to prison this month, his lawyers said in a court filing, which could make him the first senior member of the former president's administration to do so for efforts to overturn his 2020 defeat.

Navarro, who served as Trump's trade adviser, is due on March 19 to begin his four-month sentence for defying a subpoena from the U.S. House of Representatives committee that investigated the Jan. 6, 2021, Capitol attack, his lawyers revealed in a court filing late on Sunday.

They are asking a federal appeals court in Washington to pause the sentence while Navarro appeals his conviction. His defence team indicated they would ask the U.S. Supreme Court to intervene if his request is denied.

Navarro, 74, was found guilty of contempt of Congress last September for refusing to turn over documents or sit for an interview with the Democratic-led House committee that investigated the Capitol riot, a failed attempt by Trump supporters to overturn Trump’s defeat in the 2020 election. He was sentenced in January.

Navarro, a China hawk who also advised Trump on the response to the COVID pandemic, has claimed Trump invoked the legal doctrine of executive privilege, which shields some presidential records and communications from disclosure.

A federal judge found that Trump had not formerly invoked the privilege.

Steve Bannon, a onetime top strategist to Trump, was also sentenced to four months in prison for defying a subpoena from the Jan. 6 panel, but a judge has allowed him to remain free while he appeals.

Steve Bannon, a onetime top strategist to Trump, was also sentenced to four months in prison for defying a subpoena from the Jan. 6 panel, but a judge has allowed him to remain free while he appeals.

Doctors got a nasty surprise when a man, who had visited the hospital complaining about migraines, was found to have an infestation of parasitic worms in his brain.

Doctors got a nasty surprise when a man, who had visited the hospital complaining about migraines, was found to have an infestation of parasitic worms in his brain. It was found that the 52-year-old man was infected with Taenia solium's larvae, which is a tapeworm that generally infects pigs. The parasite can also infect people who consume uncooked or partially cooked pork or the poop which contains the eggs of the worm. As reported by the New York Post, the man sought medical help after an increase in the frequency of his aggressive headaches in the past four months. In the scans, it was revealed that he had multiple cysts on both sides of his brain which eventually were found to be pork tapeworm eggs. Also Read: South Korea orders striking doctors back to work as emergency units turn away patients It was reported that the man contracted the illness after he ate undercooked bacon. The doctors were able to find the cause after they were told about his ''lifelong preference for soft bacon.'' Microscopic eggs are likely to have entered the man's intestine which leads to the development of a tapeworm. He was diagnosed by the doctors as suffering from parasitic infection neurocysticercosis, which refers to a condition in which the parasite lays eggs and infects various regions of the body. Historically unusual case leaves doctors shocked The American Journal of Case Reports recently published the details of the ailment of the man. ''It is historically very unusual to encounter infected pork in the United States, and our case may have public health implications,'' wrote researchers. The patient was admitted to the intensive care unit and was injected with corticosteroid dexamethasone four times every day to decrease the swelling in his brain. He was also administered albendazole and praziquantel for two weeks which is used for treating worm infections. After some time the cysts disappeared and there was improvement in his migraines. Watch: South Korea to revamp working conditions for young doctors, Seoul announces new measures ''A 52-year-old man with a medical history of migraine headaches, complicated type 2 diabetes mellitus, and obesity presented with a 4-month change in his migraines becoming severe, worse over his occiput bilaterally, and unresponsive to abortive therapy," the details of the case read. "His exposure history was unremarkable except for a habit of eating undercooked bacon, by which he would have developed neurocysticercosis via autoinfection. Neuroimaging and serology confirmed a diagnosis of neurocysticercosis and he was treated accordingly with antiparasitic and anti-inflammatory medications,'' it added. (With inputs from agencies)

The United States Department of Justice has started a criminal investigation into the Boeing jet door blowout case which had created a gaping hole on the Alaska Airlines aeroplane in January, reported the Wall Street Journal on Saturday (Mar 9).

The newspaper, citing documents, said that some passengers and crew members, which included pilots and flight attendants who had boarded the January 5 flight, were contacted by the investigators.

Alaska Airlines' plane door blew out seven minutes after it took off from Portland, Oregon which forced the pilots to make an emergency landing.

Since the incident, Boeing has remained under scrutiny. In an official statement, Alaska Airlines said, “In an event like this, it’s normal for the DOJ to be conducting an investigation. “We are fully co-operating and do not believe we are a target of the investigation.”

DOJ to look into Boeing's previous settlement

According to the Wall Street Journal, the investigation will also assist the Department in reviewing whether Boeing complied with an earlier settlement which resolved a federal investigation of its 737 Max aircraft's safety after two deadly crashes in 2018 and 2019.

Boeing had agreed to make a payment of $2.5 billion, which included a $244 million fine, in 2021 to settle the investigation into the crashes of flights which were operated by Lion Air and Ethiopian Airlines.

Two employees were also blamed by the company for deceiving regulators regarding flaws in the flight-control system.

In a letter to Congress, Boeing also acknowledged that it is not able to find records for work done on Alaska Airlines plane's door panel.

“We have looked extensively and have not found any such documentation,” Ziad Ojakli, Boeing executive vice president and chief government lobbyist, said in a letter to Sen. Maria Cantwell.

The company claimed its “working hypothesis” was, the records of removal and reinstallation of the panel on the 737 MAX final assembly line in Washington were never created, even though the systems of Boeing required it.

After the letter was sent, a contentious Senate committee hearing was held in which Boeing as well as the National Transportation Safety Board argued over whether there has been co-operation from the company in the investigation.

Jennifer Homendy, chairman of the safety board, testified for two months that Boeing repeatedly did not agree to identify employees who had worked on door panels on Boeing 737s and no documentation was provided by them regarding the repair job which included removing and reinstalling the door panel.

“It’s absurd that two months later we don’t have that,” said Homendy. “Without that information, that raises concerns about quality assurance, quality management, safety management systems” at Boeing, he said.

United States President Joe Biden on Saturday (March 9) expressed regret over using the term "illegal" while speaking about the suspected killer of Laken Riley during his State of the Union address.

Later, former president and Biden's 2024 GOP rival Donald Trump blasted the immigration policies of the Democrat and held him responsible for the death of Laken Riley, while speaking at a rally attended by the family and friends of a Georgia nursing student.

The US president expressed regret over his comments after he faced criticism from some of his party members for using the term in the context of people who have arrived or are living in the country illegally.

“I shouldn’t have used illegal, it’s undocumented,” said Biden, in an interview with MSNBC’s Jonathan Capehart which was recorded in Atlanta.

The comment was made by Biden on Thursday night (Mar 7) while speaking about a bipartisan border security deal which did not go through after Trump opposed it.

Then, Trump ally US Rep Marjorie Taylor Greene shouted at the president to say Laken Riley's name, who was a Georgia woman and was killed last month, further saying that she was killed "by an illegal."

"By an illegal, that's right," responded Biden and asked how many people are being killed by "legals."

The United States has dispatched a military ship laden with humanitarian aid to war-torn Gaza, Central Command (CENTCOM) said on Sunday (March 10).

This comes after US President Joe Biden announced during his State of the Union address that the US military will build a temporary aid port on Gaza's Mediterranean coast to provide humanitarian aid to the besieged Palestinian enclave via sea.

General Frank S. Besson left Joint Base Langley-Eustis in Virginia "less than 36 hours after President Biden announced the U.S. would provide humanitarian assistance to Gaza by sea," CENTCOM said in a statement.

The logistics support vessel is "carrying the first equipment to establish a temporary pier to deliver vital humanitarian supplies," it said.

There is no port infrastructure in Gaza. The US plans to use Cyprus initially, which is offering a procedure for screening of cargoes that will include Israeli officials, eliminating the need for security checks in Gaza.

An Israeli official said Tel Aviv "fully supports the deployment of a temporary dock" on Gaza’s coast and the operation would be carried out "with full coordination between the two parties."

"The head of the Mossad, David Barnea, met yesterday (Friday) with the head of the CIA, Bill Burns, as part of the ceaseless efforts to advance another hostage release deal," Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu's office said in a statement on behalf of the Mossad.

"Contacts and cooperation with the mediators continue all the time in an effort to narrow the gaps and reach agreements," said Mossad.

The statement comes amid mediators scrambling to secure a new ceasefire deal in the Gaza war before Ramadan which could begin as early as Sunday, depending on the lunar calendar.

"At this stage, Hamas is entrenching its positions like someone who is not interested in a deal and is striving to inflame the region during Ramadan at the expense of Palestinian residents of the Gaza Strip," it said.

Mossad also stated that Hamas was aiming for unrest in the area to worsen during Ramadan.

Israeli officials have stated that the conflict between the warring sides would come to an end only with the defeat of the Palestinian militant group Hamas.

The UFO office of the Pentagon has been developing sensor kits for collecting data on unidentified objects in real time.

Acting head of the All-Domain Anomaly Resolution Office (AARO) Tim Phillips said that the sensors are aimed at understanding unidentified anomalous phenomena (UAP), which is a new term for UFOs which includes mysterious objects in the sky, underwater or space.

Phillips said that his office has been working with academia and government laboratories to create a highly portable sensor kit called the "Gremlin System" which can collect data across different spectra, as per a report published in DefenseScoop.

Phillips said that the Gremlin System has already shown how it can detect a wide range of phenomena occurring in space.

"It's picking up a lot of bats and birds. We're learning a lot about solar flaring," said Phillips to media reporters.

"We're really starting to understand what's in orbit around our planet and how we can eliminate those as anomalous objects," he added.

The AARO director claimed that these Gremlin System sensors can be used for surveillance of sensitive sites for airspace intrusions and keep a watch on US satellites in orbit.

"If we have a national security site and there are objects being reported that trend within restricted airspace, or within a maritime range, or in the proximity of one of our spaceships, we need to understand what that is. And so that's why we're developing a sensor capability that we can deploy in reaction to reports," said Phillips.

President Joe Biden, in his State of the Union speech on Thursday (Mar 7), is expected to announce that the US Army will build a port on Gaza's Mediterranean coast so that humanitarian assistance can be delivered via sea, said senior administration officials cited in American media.

The officials further stated that the Palestinian militant group Hamas was delaying the new hostage deal with Israel as it did not agree on releasing sick and elderly hostages that it had held captive.

In his speech to Congress, Biden will announce that he has ordered the U.S. military "to undertake an emergency mission to establish a port in Gaza, working with like-minded countries and humanitarian partners," one of the officials said.

The temporary port would enable "hundreds of additional truckloads" of humanitarian aid to be delivered to Palestinians living in the war-torn besieged enclave every day, said the official, further adding that the US would coordinate security with Israel.

It also would work with the United Nations and humanitarian aid organisations that "understand the distribution of assistance within Gaza," stated the official, adding that initial supplies would come from Cyprus.

US airdrops fresh round of humanitarian aid in Gaza; 36,800 meals delivered

The United States on Tuesday (March 5) carried out a fresh round of airdrop of humanitarian aid to Palestinians in war-torn Gaza, delivering over 36,800 meals.

The first airdrop was made on Saturday where humanitarian aid was dropped over the coast of southwestern Gaza.

The situation in the besieged Palestinian enclave is dire, with over 2.3 million people displaced due to the ongoing Israeli offensive. As per the Hamas-controlled Health Ministry in Gaza, at least 15 children died in one hospital alone. There are also reports of people dying of malnutrition.

Gaza truce talks to reconvene next week

Meanwhile, Hamas on Thursday (March 7) announced that its delegation left Cairo and discussions on a Gaza ceasefire and hostage release are set to reconvene next week.

The latest development raises questions if the mediators would be able to ink a ceasefire deal before the start of the Muslim holy month of Ramadan.

Despite an impasse over Hamas' phased process demand, Egyptian officials have not ruled out the possibility of a deal before Ramadan, expected to begin Sunday evening (Mar 10).

Earlier on Saturday, a US senior official said that Israel has 'more or less' agreed to a deal proposing a six-week ceasefire in its war against the Palestinian militant group Hamas in the Gaza Strip.

The Biden administration official further added that it was now up to Hamas to fully agree to the release of the most vulnerable hostages for the agreement to be put into effect.

"There's a framework deal. The Israelis have more or less accepted it," the Biden administration official said.

The releasing of balloons into the skies of Florida, United States is likely to be banned if the state's littering laws are tightened successfully.

If the legislation passes, those found intentionally releasing a balloon into the sky in Florida will be fined.

This is part of an effort being made towards changing laws in at least eight states of the United States with the aim to protect turtles, dolphins, birds and other wildlife from the danger of either being eaten up or getting entangled in fallen balloons.

Law to impose a fine of up to $150 for releasing balloons

According to the new law, the intentional releasing of balloons has been banned which makes the littering offence punishable with fines of up to $150. Children below the age of six would remain exempted.

The change has passed through the legislature of the state and has reached the desk of Florida Governor Ron DeSantis. If DeSantis signs the legislation, it will go into effect on July 1.

Restrictions have already been placed by Arizona, California, Connecticut, Kentucky, Maine, Maryland, Tennessee and Virginia on the outdoor release of balloons.

Balloons harming wildlife and nature

The balloons, especially those which are filled with helium and can float long distances, have been known to maim and kill wildlife. According to the experts, they should remain inside where they cannot harm animals.

Generally, balloons are mistaken as food by the animals. Consuming them can fill up the stomachs of animals, however, they do not get digested which makes it impossible for them to absorb nutrients.

Once the animals fail to take in nutrients, they slowly starve to death with a stomach which is filled with latex or mylar.

The balloons are able to float on the surface in lakes and oceans which tempts animals, who are finding food.

Sea turtles are especially vulnerable to such conditions are they reach the surface to breathe and eat and sometimes eat balloons thinking they are jellyfish, as per the US Fish and Wildlife Service.

The strings which are attached to the balloons also face the chance of getting tangled around birds which either asphyxiates them or ties them to a single spot till they die of hunger.

Few of those balloons are marketed as biodegradable, however, they still take years to break down which puts animals' lives at risk, as per the University of Michigan.

Metallic mylar balloons also float onto power lines which cause thousands of power outages every year.

United States President Joe Biden on Friday (Mar 1) said that the country will start airdropping food and supplies as part of humanitarian aid into Gaza in the days ahead.

Speaking with Italy's Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni in an Oval Office meeting, he called the killing of more than 100 people in Gaza a "tragic and alarming event".

On Thursday (Feb 29), a huge crowd of people in North Gaza rushed towards food aid trucks after which the Israeli forces guarding those trucks opened fire at them.

"The loss of life is heartbreaking. People are so desperate that innocent people got caught in a terrible war unable to feed their families, and you saw the response when they tried to get aid in," Biden said.

He added, "And we need to do more in the United States, will do more. In the coming days, we’re going to join with our friends in Jordan and others in providing airdrops."

"In addition to expanding deliveries by land, as I said, we're gonna -- we're gonna insist that Israel facilitate more trucks and more routes to get more and more people the help they need. No excuses because the truth is, aid flowing to Gaza is nowhere nearly enough," the US president further said.

"Now, it's nowhere nearly enough. Innocent lives are on the line, and children's lives on the line and we won't stand by and let -- until they -- until we get more aid in there. We should be getting hundreds of trucks in, not just several. I won't stand by and we won’t let up," he added.

US to start airdropping food, supplies into Gaza in days ahead: Biden

In a dramatic moment, as the 2024 presidential campaign gathers steam, both current United States President Joe Biden and former president Donald Trump visited the southern border on Thursday (Feb 29).

The two presidential election candidates visited the border to address the issue which has for decades confounded the administrations of both parties - immigration.

Moments after Trump started speaking in Eagle Pass, Biden got a briefing regarding the issue from the border officials.

Later, Biden thanked border agents and stated that he would get them more resources “come hell or high water".

“It’s long past time to act,” he claimed, further stating that border control “desperately” needs more resources.

Making a direct appeal to Trump, Biden asked him to jointly appeal the Congress to pass the bill, which was tanked after it was opposed by Trump and his allies.

"I understand my predecessor is in Eagle Pass today. What I would say to Mr Trump, instead of playing policy with this issue, instead of telling members of Congress to block this legislation, join me or I'll join you in telling the Congress to pass this bipartisan border security bill," Biden said.

"We can do it together, you know, and I know it's the toughest, most efficient, most effective border security bill this country's ever seen. So, instead of playing politics with the issue, why don't we just get together and get it done," he added.

Biden calls bipartisan border bill 'a win for Americans'

Biden said that the bipartisan border bill is “a win for the American people,” and called it a “truly bipartisan initiative".

He appealed to the Senate to reconsider the bill and asked senators to “set politics aside”.

Biden claimed that it's "long past time to act," adding that House Speaker Mike Johnson "needs to put this bill on the floor".

"The majority of Democrats and Republicans in both houses support this legislation, until someone came along and said, don't do that, it'll benefit the incumbent," said Biden. "That's a hell of a way to do business in America for such a serious problem. We need to act," he added.

Hitting back at Biden's appeal, Trump's national press secretary Karoline Leavitt, in a statement, said, "Instead of shifting the blame on everyone but himself, Joe Biden should take responsibility for the border crisis, deaths, and destruction that his policies have caused, say Laken Riley’s name, and use his executive power to shut the border down today."

Trump, in his remarks, said that the death of 22-year-old Riley, a graduate nursing student who was killed while she was jogging near the University of Georgia this month, was “barbaric”.

Also Read: Donald Trump calls on Joe Biden to undergo cognitive test Making a direct appeal to Trump, Biden asked him to jointly appeal the Congress to pass the bill, which was tanked after it was opposed by Trump and his allies. Biden calls bipartisan border bill 'a win for Americans' Biden said that the bipartisan border bill is “a win for the American people,” and called it a “truly bipartisan initiative". China has been producing robotic dogs capable of shooting at a mass scale.

These dogs, which are four-legged machines, are being used as novelty electronic pets or to carry out mundane tasks like carrying a discus for a track and field athlete.

The Chinese military has shared footage through state media which showed some of these dogs as being armed and placed among live military exercises.

However, critics have dismissed the video as propaganda, while stating that the build of these robots will make them ill-suited to tackle the recoil of standard firearms, and it will also be impossible to fire with a trained soldier's speed and precision.

However, others have acknowledged the potential of this new technology, stating that it can revolutionise future warfare.

Several units of the robotic dogs were bought by the US Marine Corps to evaluate the Chinese-made robotic dogs' combat effectiveness last year.

And although the results of the evaluation conducted were not made public, a study conducted by Chinese scientists said that these robotic dogs are likely to outshoot even seasoned troops, in terms of handling firearms.

The study “demonstrates the feasibility of a legged strike platform”, wrote lead scientist Xu Cheng and his team, in a peer-reviewed paper which was published in the Chinese Journal of Engineering.

According to the research done by the Chinese team, the US military may not be able to use these dogs in the best way on the battlefield.

For long, the university has been sanctioned by the United States because of its close ties with the Chinese military.

As part of the study, the team of Xu placed a 7.62mm machine gun on a robotic dog. The gun, which was used, was capable of firing 750 rounds per minute, even though the model's specifications were not mentioned.

The weapon also had a shock-absorbing mount, automatic reloading system and optoelectronic sight.

Then, the robotic dog fired 10-round bursts at a human-sized target, which was standing at a distance of 100 metres (328 feet).

If the target was a person's chest, most of the bullets would have hit the heart and the regions close to it.

United States President Joe Biden said that his annual medical examination ended well on Wednesday (Feb 28) as he joked about how doctors felt that he looked too young.

This came at a time when there has been increasing scrutiny over his old age as he plans to fight the November elections.

The White House informed that a summary of the test results will be released by the Walter Reed military medical facility outside Washington later.

"They think I look too young," Biden said to the reporters when speaking about the medical exam.

"No, there is nothing different from last year," when the exam results declared him fit for duty, added Biden, while speaking at the White House.

Biden took a helicopter ride to reach the medical centre where he spent just over two and a half hours. He exited the medical centre donning sunglasses and saluted the naval officers before leaving in his motorcade.

The White House claimed that Biden's longtime doctor, Kevin O'Connor was "happy with how everything went", and added that the assessment included a team of 20 physicians.

In the investigation, he was cleared of illegally retaining classified documents in his garage and home, but added that he would come across to a jury as a "well-meaning, elderly man with a poor memory."

In a fierce counterattack to the investigation in a press conference at the White House, Biden said that his memory was "fine" and slammed the special counsel for saying that he does not remember when his son Beau died of cancer.

The Biden administration is "doing everything" it can to improve the H-1B visa process, the White House said on Wednesday (Feb 29) amid worries over delays in the visas issued in large numbers by IT firms, mainly from India.

A White House spokesperson also said that the backlog in 'green card' for permanent residency, and other issues related to the country's legal immigration system, were all being worked upon.

"One of the steps, if we look at the H-1B visa process, we have taken action to improve that and the process and backlog for lawful permanent residents (green card) who are eligible to become US citizens," White House Press Secretary Karine Jean-Pierre told reporters at her daily news conference.

The H-1B visa is a non-immigrant visa which permits companies based out of the United States to hire foreign nationals for specialised jobs that require advanced technical or theoretical training. A large number of these visas are lapped up every year by big Indian tech firms.

Jean-Pierre informed that efforts were being made to streamline the visa process, responding to concerns raised by a section of Indian Americans who were sceptical of Biden's efforts addressing the woes of legal immigrants as the US president was doing for illegal immigrants.

Biden on Thursday (Feb 29) will head to the southern border with Mexico in Texas.

"Just last month, for example, as a part of our efforts to strengthen the integrity of our immigration system and reduce the potential for fraud, the DHS [Department of Homeland Security] published a final rule relating to H-1B visa," Jean-Pierre said.

The rapidly spreading wildfires in Texas, United States on Tuesday (Feb 27) forced the authorities to give immediate evacuation orders in small towns and close down a nuclear facility as dry grass, warm temperatures and strong winds fuelled the fire in the state's rural area of Panhandle.

Wildfires in Texas: Immediate evacuation ordered, operations at nuclear weapons facility halted

Soft-landing a craft on the moon is difficult. There's no nation or private firm that will dispute it. Everyone who has tried has learnt lessons the hard way. Ample testimony to this fact is how America, the pioneer of space technology with multiple Apollo-series manned moon landings is celebrating the latest partial success by private firm Intuitive Machines. Lunar lander Odysseus, made by Texas-based Intuitive Machines, managed to soft-land near the Lunar South Pole on Friday (Feb 23). America's last manned moon mission was the Apollo 17 in 1972 and since then, America hasn't landed on the moon — be it man or robot... In recent years, the US has been working towards setting up a long-term presence of humans on the moon. As part of this, NASA has been funding American private firms, in what is known as the Commercial Lunar Payload Services (CLPS) programme. NASA pays companies to ferry different kinds of experiments to the moon, the private firm would be tasked with building, launching and operating the spacecraft. Also Read: US spaceship Odysseus may have 'tipped over' on Moon surface, likely 'fractured' landing equipment Earlier this year, a similar private Mission Peregrine One by American Firm Astrobotic ended up in failure, while travelling from the earth to the moon. That's where Intuitive Machines has succeeded. Their craft has soft-landed on the moon and is operational. Literally - there's an American moon landing, more than 50 years after Apollo 17. However, there's a catch. The robotic craft Odysseus appears to have landed tilted. Perhaps, it broke a leg while landing. It does qualify as a soft landing, but the craft's operational capabilities could be impacted in some way or the other. Recently, the Japanese Space Agency JAXA also soft-landed its Smart Lander for Investigating Moon(SLIM) craft. With that, Japan became the 5th nation to land a craft on the moon, but even SLIM had a tilted landing. It hampered some of the operations of the craft. However, Japan managed to get images of their craft on the moon using their toy-based robotic rovers. So Far, the American firm hasn't shared images of their Odysseus landed on the moon. Moon landings are never easy. A host of private firms and Government agencies failed in recent years. Here are the notable ones: In April 2019, Beresheet, a private mission from Israel had hard-landed on the moon and was destroyed on impact. In September 2019, the Indian space agency's Chandrayaan-2 had a hard landing and was destroyed on impact. In March 2023, Hakuto-R, a private moon landing mission from Japan crash-landed on the moon. In August 2023, Russia's Luna-25 lander crash-landed on the moon, owing to a failed manoeuvre. It was a mission by the Russian space agency Roscosmos. However, the biggest success in recent years has been India's Chandrayaan-3 which soft-landed flawlessly on August 23, 2023. This was of course a mission by the Indian government space agency ISRO. Indian space agency officials described it as a "feather-like soft-landing". This was India's second attempt at lunar landing and it delivered on all planned objectives and much more. The success of Chandrayaan-3 demonstrated the determination of ISRO teams, who worked for four years to perfect the flawless mission by performing thousands of simulations and ground tests. Chandrayaan-3 highlights The Vikram lander touched down perfectly near the Lunar south pole, as planned. It was the first craft to soft touch down near the lunar south pole ISRO shared multiple images of the lander and rover on the Lunar surface. The lander ramp was deployed and rover Pragyan traversed the moon. All scientific equipment performed their roles and sent the data back to Earth. Watch: Odysseus moon landing: Historic mission reaches lunar surface Before the planned end of the mission, ISRO performed a hop test with its lander and tested a crucial technology where a craft can fire its engines to vertically take off from the moon's surface. From the moon's orbit, the Chandrayaan-3 propulsion module was steered back towards Earth. This is essential to return from the moon and bring back samples to earth. Learning lessons from one failed landing, ISRO delivered a textbook success mission with Chandrayaan-3 and made 1.4 billion Indians proud and amazed the world. ISRO is now working on Chandrayaan-4. ISRO is also working with the Japanese space agency JAXA - a mission known as LUPEX (Lunar Polar Exploration). LUPEX will be launched on a Japanese rocket. It will comprise an Indian moon lander and a Japanese robotic rover.

United States President Joe Biden, in yet another gaffe, left the audience baffled after he called his Chinese counterpart Xi Jinping the ‘head of Russia’ before correcting himself.

“He (Obama) wanted me to get to know (then Vice President) Xi Jinping because it was clear he was going to be the head of Russia (corrects himself) uuuh China and we were having problems with Russia at the time and other countries as well. So what he (Obama) said was get to know him (Jinping), he is going to be there," the US president said.

While speaking in the East Room of the White House during the Annual National Governors’ Association, Biden also reiterated his claim of travelling 17,000 miles with Xi Jinping which has previously been debunked by various local news outlets.

"He (Obama) couldn't because he was the President, so I travelled 17,000 miles with him throughout the country, in our country and in China as well. We were in the Tibet plateau and he turned to me and said: Can you define America for me? And I looked at him and suggested that I can in one word: Possibilities,” he added.
