President Volodymyr Zelensky on Sunday (Apr 21) said that the approval of over $61 billion in military aid for Ukraine by the US House of Representatives is a testament to the fact that his country will not become "a second Afghanistan."

US House on Saturday (Apr 20) voted 311-112 in favour of giving Ukraine a $60.8bn military aid package&nbsp;at a time when Kyiv has been fighting against Russia's invasion over the past two years and is now facing a critical shortage of ammunition to continue its defences.

"This aid will strengthen Ukraine and send the Kremlin a powerful signal that it will not be the second Afghanistan," Zelensky said in an interview with NBC's "Meet the Press".

"The United States will stay with Ukraine, will protect Ukrainians, and... they'll protect democracy in the world," he added.

The Ukrainian leader further expressed concern that some of his own forces are also "exhausted."

"We need to replace them. But these new brigades, they have to have the equipment," he told Meet the Press.&nbsp;

Soon after the announcement, Zelensky, in a video on his social media handle, expressed gratitude stating that the US assistance would help save lives and "bring a just end" to the war with Russia.&nbsp;

"I am grateful to the United States House of Representatives, both parties and personally Speaker Mike Johnson for the decision that keeps history on the right track," he wrote in a post on X.

'US military aid for Ukraine shows country will not become second Afghanistan,' says Zelensky

Terry Anderson, a US&nbsp;journalist who was held captive by Islamist militants for almost seven years in Lebanon and came to symbolise the plight of Western hostages during the country's 1975-1990 civil war, died on Sunday at age 76, his daughter said in a statement.

The former chief Middle East correspondent for The Associated Press, who was the longest held hostage of the scores of Westerners abducted in Lebanon, died at his home in Greenwood Lake, New York, said his daughter Sulome Anderson, who was born three months after he was seized. No cause of death was given.

Kept in barely-lit cells by mostly Shi'ite Muslim groups in what was known as The Hostage Crisis, and chained by his hands and feet and blindfolded much of the time, the former Marine later recalled that he "almost went insane" and that only his Roman Catholic faith prevented him from taking his life before he was freed in December 1991.

"Though my father's life was marked by extreme suffering during his time as a hostage in captivity, he found a quiet, comfortable peace in recent years. I know he would choose to be remembered not by his very worst experience, but through his humanitarian work with the Vietnam Children's Fund, the Committee to Protect Journalists, homeless veterans and many other incredible causes," Sulome Anderson said.

The family will take some time to organise a memorial, she said.

Anderson's ordeal began in Beirut on the morning of March 16, 1985, after he played a round of tennis. A green Mercedes sedan with curtains over the rear window pulled up, three gunmen jumped out and dragged Anderson, still dressed in shorts, into the car.

The pro-Iran Islamic Jihad group claimed responsibility for the kidnapping, saying it was part of "continuing operations against Americans." The abductors demanded freedom for Shi'ite Muslims jailed in Kuwait for bomb attacks against the U.S. and French embassies there.

It was the start of a nightmare for Anderson that would last six years and nine months during which he was stuck in cells under the rubble-strewn streets of Beirut and elsewhere, often badly fed and sleeping on a thin, dirty mattress on a concrete floor.

During captivity, both his father and brother would die of cancer and he would not see his daughter Sulome until she was six years old.

"What kept me going?" he asked aloud shortly after release. "My companions. I was lucky to have people with me most of the time. My faith, stubbornness. You do what you have to. You wake up every day, summon up the energy from somewhere. You think you haven't got it and you get through the day and you do it. Day after day after day."

Other hostages described Anderson as tough and active in captivity, learning French and Arabic and exercising regularly.

However, they also told of him banging his head against a wall until he bled in frustration at beatings, isolation, false hopes and the feeling of being neglected by the outside world.

"There is a limit of how long we can last and some of us are approaching the limit very badly," Anderson said in a videotape released by his captors in December 1987.

Marcel Fontaine, a French diplomat who was released in May 1988 after three years of captivity, recalled the time cell mate Anderson thought freedom was near because he was allowed to see the sun and eat a hamburger.

In April 1987 Anderson was given a suit of clothes that his captors had made for him. "He wore it every day," Fontaine said.

A week later, however, Anderson's captors took the suit back, leaving him in despair and certain he was forgotten, Fontaine said.

Scores of journalist groups, governments and individuals over the years called for Anderson's release and his Oct. 27 birthday became an unofficial U.S. memorial day for hostages.

Anderson said he considered killing himself several times but rejected it. He relied heavily on his faith, which he said he had renewed six months before being kidnapped.

"I must have read the Bible 50 times from start to finish," he said. "It was an enormous help to me."

His sister, Peggy Say, who died in 2015, was his fiercest advocate during captivity.

She worked tirelessly for her brother's freedom. She visited Arab and European capitals, lobbied the Pope, the Archbishop of Canterbury and every U.S. official and politician available.

Under pressure from the media and the U.S. hostages' families, the Reagan administration negotiated a secret and illegal deal in the mid-1980s to facilitate arms sales to Iran in return for the release of American hostages. But the deal, known as the Iran–Contra affair, failed to gain freedom for any of the hostages.

Born Oct. 27, 1947, in Lorain, Ohio, Anderson grew up in Batavia, New York. He graduated from Iowa State University and spent six years in the Marine Corps, mostly as a journalist.

He worked for the AP in Detroit, Louisville, New York, Tokyo, Johannesburg and then Beirut, where he first went to cover the Israeli invasion in 1982.

In that war-torn city, he fell in love with Lebanese woman Madeleine Bassil, who was his fiance and pregnant with their daughter Sulome when he was snatched.

He is survived by his daughters Sulome and Gabrielle, his sister Judy and brother Jack, and by Bassil, whom Sulome Anderson called "his ex-wife and best friend."

Anderson and fellow hostages developed a system of communication by tapping on walls between their cells. Always the journalist, Anderson passed on news of the outside world he had picked up during captivity to Church of England envoy Terry Waite, being held hostage in an adjacent room in September 1990 after years of solitary confinement.

"Then the world news: the Berlin Wall's falling, communism's demise in eastern Europe, free elections in the Soviet Union, work toward multiracial government in South Africa. All the incredible things that have happened since he was taken nearly three years ago. He thought I was crazy," Anderson wrote in his 1993 book "Den of Lions."

After his release, Anderson taught journalism at Columbia University in New York, Ohio University, the University of Kentucky and the University of Florida until he retired in 2015.

Among businesses he invested in were a horse ranch in Ohio, and a restaurant. He unsuccessfully ran for the Ohio state Senate as a Democrat in 2004 and sued Iran in federal court for his abduction, winning a multimillion-dollar settlement in 2002.

More than 100 people were arrested and summons were issued against them for trespassing after an encampment was set up by the protesters at New York’s Columbia University to show their solidarity with Gaza. According to the police, among those arrested was Republican Ilhan Omar’s daughter Isra Hirsi. For 30 hours, the space on the South Lawn of the university was occupied by the demonstrators, said Mayor Eric Adams, after the arrests were made on Thursday (April 18). The university asked the New York Police Department (NYPD) for help and stated that the university suspended the students, however, they still did not leave. 🚨UPDATE🚨 THOUSANDS of students at Columbia University are on the plaza with 100s of students occupying the West Lawn pic.twitter.com/0maFuvzs0R — sebas 🇵🇸🇸🇩🇨🇩🇵🇬 (@cybersebb) April 18, 2024 × “Columbia University’s students have a proud history of protests and raising their voices,” said Adams, but added that the students do not have the right to violate the policies of the university. “We will not be a city of lawlessness,” said the mayor. Hirsi, who is an organiser of a student group which advocates for Palestinians, said that for the first time, she is being punished as a student activist in her three years at the school. "Those of us in Gaza Solidarity Encampment will not be intimidated,” Hirsi wrote. Protesting students call police officers "KKK", "baby killers" Police arrested more than 108 students and gave them summonses for trespass, which included Hirsi. Two of them also faced charges of obstructing governmental administration, as per the authorities. As per NYPD Commissioner Edward Caban, the students were peacefully arrested and did not resist and said what they wanted to stay "in a peaceful manner". However, nearly 500 other students left surrounded the police “and were telling us that we’re the KKK,” among other insults, said Caban. Another police official said that they called them "baby killers" and to "go kill ourselves". "It was very sad to see," he added. NYC Mayor Eric Adams said, "It's very troubling when you protest protesting for peace. You should not be using inflammatory comments like we saw. It was very vile." Shafik added that she authorised police to clear the encampment “out of an abundance of concern” for safety on campus. The United States, by casting a veto in the United Nations Security Council on Thursday (April 18), blocked a resolution that recommended recognition of a Palestinian state by providing it full membership in the world body.

The United States, by casting a veto in the United Nations Security Council on Thursday (April 18), blocked a resolution that recommended recognition of a Palestinian state by providing it full membership in the world body. The US vetoed a draft resolution which proposed to the 193-member UN General Assembly that "the State of Palestine be admitted to membership" of the UN. Twelve member countries of the UN Security Council voted in favour of the resolution. Meanwhile, the United Kingdom and Switzerland abstained. Also Read: Pro-Palestinian protesters block traffic on Golden Gate Bridge, airport highways in major US cities Speaking in the council, Deputy US Ambassador to the UN, Robert Wood said, "The United States continues to strongly support a two-state solution. This vote does not reflect opposition to Palestinian statehood, but instead is an acknowledgement that it will only come from direct negotiations between the parties." Palestine criticises US veto, Israel stands in support Palestinian Authority President, Mahmoud Abbas, in a statement, slammed the US veto, stating that it was “unfair, immoral, and unjustified, and defies the will of the international community, which strongly supports the State of Palestine obtaining full membership in the United Nations.” Meanwhile, speaking in the council after the voting, Palestinian UN Ambassador Riyad Mansour, said, "The fact that this resolution did not pass will not break our will and it will not defeat our determination. We will not stop in our effort." However, Israel’s Foreign Minister Israel Katz was full of praise for the US and appreciated the country's decision to veto what he said was a “shameful proposal". “The proposal to recognise a Palestinian state, more than 6 months after the largest massacre of Jews since the Holocaust and after the sexual crimes and other atrocities committed by Hamas terrorists was a reward for terrorism”, wrote Katz, on X. Watch: Israel-Palestine war: Israel hostage swap for Palestinian prisoners Israel's UN Ambassador Gilad Erdan, while addressing the 12 countries who voted in favour of the resolution, said, "It's very sad because your vote will only embolden Palestinian rejectionism even more and make peace almost impossible." The Palestinian bid for full membership of the world body came six months after the war started between Israel and Hamas in the Gaza Strip. Currently, the Palestinians are a non-member observer state after they were granted a de facto recognition of statehood by the UN General Assembly in 2012. The Security Council and two-thirds of the General Assembly need to approve their application for a full UN membership so that Palestine can achieve complete statehood. (With inputs from agencies)

The US Senate on Wednesday (April 17) quickly dismissed two articles of impeachment against Department of Homeland Security Secretary Alejandro Mayorkas, calling them "unconstitutional."

The Supreme Court allowed Idaho, United States to go ahead with the enforcement of a new law which prohibits gender-affirming care for minors on Monday (April 15).

The decision was taken by a divided Supreme Court after two lower federal courts upheld an injunction against the gender-affirming care law even though litigation over the law's constitutionality continued.

All six conservative members of the high court backed the decision. Meanwhile, three liberal justices - Sonia Sotomayor, Elena Kagan and Ketanji Brown Jackson - hinted that they may have kept the law on hold.

"Ordinarily, injunctions like these may go no further than necessary to provide interim relief to the parties," wrote Justice Neil Gorsuch, in a statement which concurred with the decision of the court.

"In this case, however, the district court went much further, prohibiting a state from enforcing any aspect of its duly enacted law against anyone," he added.

In the latest development from the ongoing conflict between Israel and Hamas, the&nbsp;Palestinian militant group is now ready to release up to 20 hostages in exchange for a six-week truce, the Times of Israel said citing Channel 12 reports.

The militant group is also seeking the release of Palestinian security prisoners in return.

According to the report, the militant group has also demanded an international guarantee in the first phase of the deal which would ensure that Israel halts the ongoing war and withdraws&nbsp;IDF (Israel Defense Forces) from Gaza.

They also seek the return of northern Gazans back to their respective homes.

An Israeli official, as per the report, said that the leader of the Palestinian militant group, Yahya Sinwar does not want an agreement and was seeking an escalation of conflict in the region.

<h2>'Hamas remains barrier to Gaza hostage deal,' says US</h2>

Meanwhile, US State Department spokesperson Matthew Miller on Monday (Apr 15) said that Israel has made significant progress in the truce deal.

However, he said that Hamas was the "barrier and the obstacle to a ceasefire in Gaza."

“There is an incredibly significant proposal that went from the United States and Egypt and Qatar and Israel to Hamas last week. And Israel moved in a significant way in submitting that proposal. And there's a deal on the table that would achieve much of what Hamas claims it wants to achieve. And they have not taken that deal," Miller told a press briefing.

“Hamas needs to take that deal and they need to explain to the world and to the Palestinian people why they aren't taking it. Because it is the Hamas, it is Hamas right now that is the barrier and the obstacle to a ceasefire in Gaza,” he added.

The United States is currently pursuing a deal that would allow a truce deal lasting at least six weeks and let more aid into Gaza, added Miller.

The militant group is also seeking the release of Palestinian security prisoners in return. According to the report, the militant group has also demanded an international guarantee in the first phase of the deal which would ensure that Israel halts the ongoing war and withdraws IDF (Israel Defense Forces) from Gaza. They also seek the return of northern Gazans back to their respective homes. An Israeli official, as per the report, said that the leader of the Palestinian militant group, Yahya Sinwar does not want an agreement and was seeking an escalation of conflict in the region. Also read: Russia concerned over escalation of tensions in Middle East, urges restraint 'Hamas remains barrier to Gaza hostage deal,' says US Meanwhile, US State Department spokesperson Matthew Miller on Monday (Apr 15) said that Israel has made significant progress in the truce deal. However, he said that Hamas was the "barrier and the obstacle to a ceasefire in Gaza." “There is an incredibly significant proposal that went from the United States and Egypt and Qatar and Israel to Hamas last week. (With inputs from agencies)

“You wouldn’t sign it?” quizzed the reporter. “No,” Trump said once again.&nbsp;

However, while speaking to the reporters, he said that the ban will quickly be "straightened out". The law passed in Arizona has placed a ban on abortion from conception and it can only be carried out to save a mother's life.

On Monday (April 8), Trump released a lengthy statement which said that the voters and states need to decide how and when abortion should be restricted.

In the statement, which was shared on his social media platform Truth Social, Trump also took credit for the US Supreme Court's historic ruling in 2022 which overturned Roe v Wade.&nbsp;

In 2016, Trump had campaigned on the appointment of justices who will oppose Roe. After becoming the president, he named three conservatives to the court who voted to reverse Roe.

However, the presumptive Republican presidential nominee remained quiet over the national ban and said that it was "up to the states to do the right thing".

"My view is now that we have an abortion where everybody wanted it from a legal standpoint, the states will determine by vote or legislation or perhaps both, and whatever they decide must be the law of the land," Trump said.

He further expressed concerns regarding the Arizona ban and said that the governor would soon "bring it back into reason".

Watch: US: Arizona makes abortion punishable by 2-5 years in prison However, the presumptive Republican presidential nominee remained quiet over the national ban and said that it was "up to the states to do the right thing". "My view is now that we have an abortion where everybody wanted it from a legal standpoint, the states will determine by vote or legislation or perhaps both, and whatever they decide must be the law of the land," Trump said. He further expressed concerns regarding the Arizona ban and said that the governor would soon "bring it back into reason". Three people were injured in a shootout which took place between rival groups near the celebration which marked the end of Ramadan, said the police in Philadelphia.&nbsp;

There was no indication from the police if the event itself, which was a celebration of the culmination of the Muslim holy month, was a target of the shooting.

"We are very, very fortunate today that we did not have more individuals shot and anyone killed," said Police Commissioner Kevin Bethel, while speaking to the reporters.

Bethel added that it was mid-afternoon when more than 1,000 people were in the park to celebrate Eid al-Fitr when the shooting took place. Nearly 30 gunshots rang out, he added.&nbsp;

"What we do know is there appear to be two factions within the park, who are now exchanging gunfire," said Bethel.

<h2>No casualties reported, three injured</h2>

According to the police, three people suffered injuries including an adult, who was hit by the bullet during the exchange of gunfire and also an armed 15-year-old suspect, who was shot by the police.

The suspect was hit in the arm and leg. Bethel said that he was admitted to a hospital and is in stable condition.

He further emphasised that a third person had also reached a nearby hospital with a gunshot wound in his hand, although it was not clear if he had received the wound in the firing. &nbsp;

Police Commissioner Kevin Bethel said that they had arrested five "young people actively engaged in gunfire" near the Eid al-Fitr celebration in the case, which included the teen, and also recovered five guns. He added that no one was killed in the shooting.

US extends 'ironclad' commitment to Israel after Iran threatens to attack

The Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) has expressed concerns over the likelihood of a potent coordinated assault in the United States that can be similar to the attack that claimed the lives of thousands at a Russian concert hall in March. The director of the FBI plans to inform a House of Representatives panel on the issue on Thursday (Apr 11).

“Looking back over my career in law enforcement, I’d be hard-pressed to think of a time where so many threats to our public safety and national security were so elevated all at once,” Christopher Wray is set to tell lawmakers during a budget hearing. “But that is the case as I sit here today.”

The targeted attack on a concert hall in Russia's Moscow on March 22, which claimed the lives of at least 144 people, is said to be the country's deadliest assault ever in nearly two decades.

Russian President Vladimir Putin has put the blame on Ukraine for the attack without citing evidence. However, a branch of the Islamic State terror group&nbsp;claimed the responsibility of the massacre.

United States officials are concerned about the risk of a potential attack by an individual or a small group influenced by the ongoing war between Israel and the Palestinian militant group Hamas in the Gaza Strip.

Wray is expected to testify before the panel.

Of increasing concern "is the potential for a coordinated attack here in the homeland, akin to the ISIS-K attack we saw at the Russia Concert Hall a couple of weeks ago,” is what Wray is expected to tell a House of Representatives panel, according to news agency Reuters.

Wray also intends to push lawmakers to revive an American surveillance program, that is set to expire in April, dubbing it as an integral tool to combat US adversaries.&nbsp;

Members of both parties blocked a modest overhaul of the program in the House on Wednesday (Apr 10) stating concerns that it did not go far enough in limiting the government's surveillance powers.

“It’s critical in securing our nation, and we’re in crunch time,” Wray plans to tell lawmakers.

Solar Eclipse 2024: The weather conditions in the United States have become a major concern for the excited eclipse watchers in the country who are waiting with bated breath to see the historical astronomical phenomenon in different parts of the country.

<h2>Solar Eclipse 2024 Today</h2>

However, their plan to watch the eclipse can be ruined&nbsp;due to the changing weather (storms and clouds) in different areas along the path of totality.

The best weather for the eclipse is likely to remain from Vermont through Maine and also in Missouri through southern Indiana. In these areas, only a few isolated clouds are likely to hover in the sky, which is not likely to obstruct&nbsp;optimal eclipse viewing. So, all the eclipse watchers can expect to see the astronomical phenomenon clearly in places like Evansville, Ind.; Carbondale, Ill.; Burlington, Vt.; and Caribou, Maine.

It is expected that the eclipse will move from south central Texas through the Ohio Valley and into New England before going to northeast Canada and will cast a seconds-long shadow of darkness.

Here's how the weather is likely to be in major cities on the path of totality:

<h2>New York City</h2>

New York is most likely to observe good weather and some clouds through which one can see and will not face complete obstruction&nbsp;of the historic solar eclipse.&nbsp;

<h2>Austin and Texas&nbsp;</h2>

Texas and Austin are likely to witness an overcast sky during the eclipse which will make it difficult for viewing. It is also likely to observe severe storms later in the day. &nbsp;

<h2>Buffalo</h2>

Earlier, the sky was looking clear in Buffalo. However, it appears fairly overcast now and the forecasters say that the&nbsp;eclipse will most likely not be visible from the region.&nbsp;

<h2>Cincinnati, Cleveland, and Columbus</h2>

The skies are going to remain cloudy in Cincinnati and Columbus but they are likely to get clearer and the eclipse should be visible to people. A better viewing opportunity will be possible from Toledo in Ohio.

In Cleveland also, the skies&nbsp;are likely to clear up&nbsp;till the time the eclipse moves through the region.

<h2>Dallas</h2>

Scattered storms and overcast skies during the eclipse have been forecasted by the National Weather Service in Dallas. The weather is likely to deteriorate in the region after the eclipse. &nbsp;“There may only be a short window (1-2 hrs) between the eclipse and strong to severe storms,” stated the National Weather Service in Dallas.

Watch:&nbsp;Parts of US declare state of emergency, huge anticipation in US over total solar eclipse

<h2>Indianapolis</h2>

The skies in Indianapolis, which lies in the path of totality, will get&nbsp;clearer and the eclipse will be easily visible.

<h2>Louisville</h2>

The conditions will remain fine in Louisville for viewing the eclipse. If there is any cloud coverage, it will be clear away before the eclipse reaches the region.

<h2>Rochester&nbsp;</h2>

There will be 80 percent cloud coverage in Rochester which is on the eclipse’s path of totality.&nbsp;

<h2>San Antonio</h2>

The weather conditions in San Antonio are also not too good and the skies are likely to be covered with clouds which will hinder the experience of viewing the solar eclipse.

Total Solar Eclipse 2024: Will weather ruin your solar eclipse watch party? Here's what the forecast says

United States President Joe Biden is set to warn China this week over its growing belligerent movements in the South China Sea during his scheduled summits with Philippine President Ferdinand Marcos Jr and Japanese Prime Minister Fumio Kishida.

According to the Financial Times report, two high-ranking US officials said that Biden is expected to voice grave concerns over the ongoing situation surrounding the Second Thomas Shoal, a disputed submerged reef within the Spratly Islands.

The officials stated that Biden would emphasise that the Sierra Madre is covered under the US-Philippine Mutual Defense Treaty and that the US president expressed “deep concern” when he had a telephonic conversation with Xi last week.

“China is underestimating the potential for escalation. We’ve tried to make that clear in a series of conversations . . . that our mutual defence treaty covers Philippine sailors and ships and by extension . . . the Sierra Madre,” the Financial Times quoted one of the officials as saying.

“China needs to examine its tactics or risk some serious blowback,” they added.&nbsp;

United States President Joe Biden is set to warn China this week over its growing belligerent movements in the South China Sea during his scheduled summits with Philippine President Ferdinand Marcos Jr and Japanese Prime Minister Fumio Kishida. According to the Financial Times report, two high-ranking US officials said that Biden is expected to voice grave concerns over the ongoing situation surrounding the Second Thomas Shoal, a disputed submerged reef within the Spratly Islands. The officials stated that Biden would emphasise that the Sierra Madre is covered under the US-Philippine Mutual Defense Treaty and that the US president expressed “deep concern” when he had a telephonic conversation with Xi last week. “China is underestimating the potential for escalation. We’ve tried to make that clear in a series of conversations . . . that our mutual defence treaty covers Philippine sailors and ships and by extension . . . the Sierra Madre,” the Financial Times quoted one of the officials as saying. “China needs to examine its tactics or risk some serious blowback,” they added. The United States called the sudden withdrawal of the Israeli military's troops from the southern Gaza Strip a "rest and refit" plan and not something which indicates any new operations.&nbsp;

White House national security spokesperson John Kirby, in an interview with ABC News, said, "As we understand it, and through their public announcements, it is really just about rest and refit for these troops ... and not necessarily that we can tell indicative of some coming new operation for these troops."&nbsp;

Earlier, the Israeli military announced that it is withdrawing troops from south Gaza and that there will be only one brigade six months after the Israel-Hamas war started in the wake of the October 7 attack by the militant group on Israel.

Speaking about the timeline of statements issued by US President Joe Biden and others over the Israel-Hamas war, Kirby said, “I’m glad you brought that timeline up because it shows the degree … the growing degree of frustration that we’ve had with the way these operations are being prosecuted and the way that Israelis are acting on the ground in terms of civilian casualties."

“So we have been increasingly frustrated. And again, that was a core message that the president delivered to Prime Minister [Benjamin] Netanyahu in their phone call this … past week … that they’ve got to do more, they’ve got to make changes,” he added.

Kirby said that Netanyahu on Sunday (April 7) “assured” Biden that he will make changes in the military operations of Israel.

US: Son stabs his mother to death since she ‘got on his nerves’: Report

In the United States, a man who is a convicted killer on death row has said that he wants to be executed so the families of the people he killed in 2016 can have justice and get closure. The man, identified as Derrick Dearman, told NBC News that he has sent letters to Gov. Kay Ivey and other officials to inform them that he is dropping his appeals.&nbsp;

In a phone interview from prison, the 36-year-old said, "Now it’s time for the victims and their families to get the justice they rightly deserve to start the closure."&nbsp;

He also said that his decision doesn't mean that other inmates on death row should do the same. "There's guys in the general population that committed way worse crimes than half the guys on death row. There's some guys here on death row, if you would let them go today, they would never commit a crime and be productive members of society," he added.&nbsp;

Dearman murdered five people at a home in Citronelle, Alabama, with a gun and an axe in August 2016. He was high on meth when he committed the crime. One of the victims, 22-year-old Chelsea Marie Reed, was five months pregnant, hence, the judges had convicted him on six counts of murder.&nbsp;

Other victims were Shannon Melissa Randall (35), Robert Lee Brown (26), Justin Kaleb Reed (23), and Joseph Adam Turner (26). He had also kidnapped Lester, along with Turner and Randall's three-month-old baby, after the murders. He surrendered after travelling to his father's home, local reports mentioned.&nbsp;

US man on death row wants to be executed so that families of victims have 'justice'

An Indian-origin man has sued a temple in the United States for&nbsp;$1 million in damages over branding his son with a hot iron rod as part of a religious ceremony last year.

Vijay Cheruvu, a resident of Texas' Fort Bend County alleged that his 11-year-old son was branded with a hot iron rod during a religious ceremony at the Sri Ashtalakshmi Hindu temple in Sugarland, Texas in August 2023.

The lawsuit filed in Fort Bend County stated that the boy suffered excruciating pain and permanent disfigurement.

Cheruvu is seeking over $1 million in damages in the lawsuit against the temple and its parent firm, Jeeyar Educational Trust (JET) USA, Inc.

“I was shocked. I didn’t know how to handle it. My primary concern is for my son’s well-being,” Cheruvu said at a press conference here.

He stated that the temple branded his son on his shoulder in the shape of the Hindu god, Vishnu.

The lawsuit alleges that more than 100 people took part in the religious ceremony at the Ashtalakshmi Temple at Synott Road in Sugar Land in August 2023, out of which, three participants were children, including Cheruvu's son.

Cheruvu's attorney, Brant Stogner, claimed that the boy, who was branded in both shoulders, suffered severe pain and permanent disfigurement and also developed an infection because of it.

The 11-year-old went to the temple along with his mother to attend the ceremony and was branded with the iron rod against his will and without the consent of his father, said Stogner.

He further said that branding, tattooing or scarring a child is illegal in Texas even with parental consent.

"We want to make sure our community is aware of this and want to make sure it doesn't happen to anybody else, anybody else's child or any child at all."

The child was not identified, however, the attorney read out an impact statement from him.

"I was so surprised. I did not know that anything was going to happen like this. I was shocked when they did it on my shoulder and it hurt so much that I almost cried," he said in part.

"They knew what they did was very wrong because they told me to keep it secret from everyone else. But I had to tell my dad when the pain got worse and it became infected," he added.

Cheruvu claimed that his son was taken to the temple by his ex-wife and&nbsp;was branded with the iron rod but the mother was not.

"He goes to see a therapist. He’s so deeply scarred, mentally scarred, and then there’s all the pain," said the father.

A live TV show host on Friday (Mar 29) created a stir when she aggressively tossed her script on air while addressing former US President Donald Trump's comments about a judge's daughter on social media.&nbsp;

MSNBC host Nicolle Wallace, during her show, said, "We need to change the conversation."

"I've reported breaking news about gag order requests due to threats against judges and their children more times than I can count today."

Wallace, along with former federal Judge Michael Luttig, MSNBC's John Heilman, Lisa Rubin, and Glenn Kirschner,&nbsp;denounced Trump&nbsp;and accused the former US president of using the "highest court in the land" to delay "every federal criminal trial."

"Donald Trump brazenly and repeatedly attacks not just judges," Wallace said.

"Judges don’t have Secret Service protecting them. What are we going to do differently, because Donald Trump sure as hell isn’t changing," she added.

After Trump shared critical social media posts about the judge's daughter, Manhattan prosecutors asked the judge to explain the terms of a gag order that was imposed on him.

The former United States president accused New York Judge Juan Merchan of accommodating his daughter’s interests as a Democratic political consultant.

He then alleged that Merchan, whose company had previously assisted President Joe Biden and other Democrats with their campaigns, had shared a picture online exhibiting her "obvious goal" of seeing Trump imprisoned.

“Judge Juan Merchan is totally compromised and should be removed from this TRUMP Non-Case immediately. His Daughter, Loren, is a Rabid Trump Hater, who has admitted to having conversations with her father about me, and yet he gagged me,” Trump wrote.

“She works for Crooked Joe Biden, Kamala Harris, Adam ‘Shifty’ Schiff, and other Radical Leftists who Campaign on ‘Getting Trump,’ and fundraise off the ‘Biden Indictments’ – including this Witch Hunt, which her father ‘presides' over, a TOTAL Conflict – and attacking Biden’s Political Opponent through the Courts. Former D.A. Cy Vance refused to bring this case, as did all Federal Agencies, including ‘Elections’," he added.

A live TV show host on Friday (Mar 29) created a stir when she aggressively tossed her script on air while addressing former US President Donald Trump's comments about a judge's daughter on social media. MSNBC host Nicolle Wallace, during her show, said, "We need to change the conversation." "I've reported breaking news about gag order requests due to threats against judges and their children more times than I can count today." Wallace, along with former federal Judge Michael Luttig, MSNBC's John Heilman, Lisa Rubin, and Glenn Kirschner, denounced Trump and accused the former US president of using the "highest court in the land" to delay "every federal criminal trial." "Donald Trump brazenly and repeatedly attacks not just judges," Wallace said. "Judges don’t have Secret Service protecting them. What are we going to do differently, because Donald Trump sure as hell isn’t changing," she added. Trump's ultimate aim, Luttig said, was to "delegitimise" the judiciary. In a surprising turn of events, the White House has told journalists to stop stealing from United States President Joe Biden's official aircraft, Air Force One.

A detailed probe into the widespread theft by the White House press corps caused a stir in the US capital on Friday (Mar 29).

“For years, scores of journalists — and others — have quietly stuffed everything from engraved whiskey tumblers to wine glasses to pretty much anything with the Air Force One insignia on it into their bag before stepping off the plane,” reported newspaper Politico.

The White House Correspondents' Association issued a stern warning to its members via an email stating that the items the journalists stole from the press cabin as souvenirs did not go unnoticed.

The US president is always accompanied by 13 journalists in his Boeing whenever he travels outside for official purposes.

Their travel expense, along with the meals and drinks served in-flight, are taken care of by the media outlets.

Little packages of M&amp;M’s chocolates with the presidential seal and the US leader's signature are handed out by the crew as memorabilia.

Items like glasses and other Air Force One-branded accessories are also available for purchase online.

However, Politico’s report noted that the press section aboard the president’s official plane was not contended by this and highlighted that sounds of plates and glassware could be heard rattling from their respective luggage as they got off.

In an instance, as mentioned in the report, a former White House correspondent who worked for a prominent newspaper once threw a dinner party where he served food on a set of gold-rimmed Air Force One plates that had been stolen over time.

The report further said that one journalist paid heed to the severe criticism from the correspondents' association and returned an embroidered pillowcase following a meeting with a press official in a park across from the White House.

“The pillowcase changed hands, and that was that.”
