The United States on Friday (Mar 30) announced that it is set to impose fresh visa restrictions on Hong Kong officials following the crackdown on rights in the Chinese-ruled city.

The development came after a new national security law came into force.

US Secretary of State Antony Blinken released a statement saying that in the past year China "continued to take actions against Hong Kong's promised high degree of autonomy, democratic institutions, and rights and freedoms."

"In response, the Department of State is announcing that it is taking steps to impose new visa restrictions on multiple Hong Kong officials responsible for the intensifying crackdown on rights and freedoms," Blinken said in a statement.

However, he did not share details on the officials that would be targeted in the latest sanctions.

He stated that the crackdown included the passage of 'Article 23', which is a national security law that is aimed at targeting several crimes such as treason, insurrection, espionage, and theft of state secrets among others.

The announcement by Blinken case after the annual review of Hong Kong's autonomy by Washington.

"This year, I have again certified that Hong Kong does not warrant treatment under U.S. laws in the same manner as the laws were applied to Hong Kong before July 1, 1997," Blinken said.

Previously, the United States imposed sanctions and visa curbs on Hong Kong officials that Washington has accused of corrupting the rights and freedoms that distinguish the city from the rest of China.

The Biden administration on Friday revised rules aimed at making it harder for China to access US artificial intelligence (AI) chips and chipmaking tools, part of an effort to hobble Beijing's chipmaking industry over national security concerns.

The rules, released in October, seek to halt shipments to China of more advanced AI chips designed by Nvidia and others as Washington cracks down on Beijing over concerns its advancing tech sector could help boost China's military.

The new rules, which run 166 pages in length, go into effect on Thursday. They clarify, for example, that restrictions on chip shipments to China also apply to laptops containing those chips.

The Commerce Department, which oversees export controls, has said it plans to continue updating its restrictions on technology shipments to China as it seeks to bolster and fine-tune the measures.

Reacting to the summoning of an American diplomat by India over the remarks of the US on the Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal's arrest in the liquor policy case, Washington DC on Wednesday (Mar 27) reiterated its call for "fair, transparent, timely legal processes".

"We continue to follow these actions closely, including the arrest of Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal," said US State Department Spokesperson Matthew Miller while responding to questions on India summoning Gloria Berbena.

Asked about the frozen bank accounts of the opposition Congress party, he said, “We are also aware of the Congress party's allegations that tax authorities have frozen some of their bank accounts in a manner that will make it challenging to effectively campaign in the upcoming elections. And we encourage fair, transparent and timely legal processes for each of these issues."

"With respect to your first question, I'm not going to talk about any private diplomatic conversations, but of course, what we have said publicly is what I just said from here, that we encourage fair, transparent, timely legal processes. We don't think anyone should object to that. We’ll make the same thing clear privately," the spokesperson said.

The dollar climbed on Wednesday in the wake of more strong U.S. economic data, nudging the Japanese yen to a 34-year low and into the zone that drew official market intervention in 2022.

The yen traded at 151.97 per dollar in the Asia session, down about 0.2% and weaker than 151.94 where Japanese authorities stepped in during October 2022 to buy the currency and its weakest level since the middle of 1990.

For the quarter ending later this week the yen is the worst-performing major, down more than 7% on the dollar even after Japan's exit last week from negative interest rates.

Officials have been making near daily warnings against speculative moves and markets are jittery about a test of 152 per dollar as Finance Minister Shunichi Suzuki said Japan won't rule out any steps if it thinks the yen is falling too fast.

"The market is very sensitive to the 152 area," said National Australia Bank strategist Rodrigo Catril.

"If we were to break that level then recent history would suggest that intervention would be much more likely."

BOJ policymaker Naoki Tamura said on Wednesday the central bank must proceed slowly but steadily toward normalising its policies - seemingly giving the yen a little push weaker.

The move set the dollar higher more broadly, with the Chinese yuan and New Zealand dollar sold very close to four-month lows.

The yuan weakened to 7.2285 per dollar despite a strong fix of its trading band by the central bank. The New Zealand dollar <NZD=> fell 0.2% to $0.5988. New Zealand's Treasury revised its economic growth forecasts lower on Tuesday.

Australian data published in the morning showed inflation holding at a two-year low of 3.4% in February, reinforcing market wagers that the next move in interest rates would be down. The Aussie slipped 0.3% to $0.6515.

It is down 4.4% for the quarter. Other moves in Asia were kept in check as markets wait for Friday's release of U.S. core inflation data.

Overnight data showed a bigger-than-expected jump in U.S. durable goods orders in February. While that only partly made up for a large drop in January and came with sub-par consumer confidence data, it pushed the dollar up a little bit.

The euro, at $1.0825 is more or less in the middle of a range it has kept for a year and is down 1.9% for a quarter where expectations for U.S. rate cuts have been scaled back.

The Swiss franc, still reeling from a surprise rate cut in Switzerland last week, fell about 0.5% on the dollar to a four-month low of 0.9042 overnight.

It is down about 7% for the first quarter of the year. The U.S. dollar index is up 3% for the quarter to 104.4.

Sterling was steady at $1.2621 and was broadly steady for the quarter, too, down just 0.8%.

On Tuesday Bank of England policymaker Catherine Mann said she changed her mind to vote for a rate hold last week, instead of a hike, due to consumers turning more stingy. But she still believes financial markets have too many cuts priced in.

Former United States president Donald Trump on Tuesday (Mar 26) joined hands with country music singer Lee Greenwood, who is famous for the song “God Bless the USA”, to promote and sell pricey Bibles. The singer has always been present in the political rallies of the former president.

“All Americans need a Bible in their home, and I have many,” said Trump in a video shared on Truth Social in which he announced the business deal.

“It’s my favourite book. It’s a lot of people’s favourite book. Religion and Christianity are the biggest things missing from this country, and I truly believe that we need to bring them back,” he said. “It’s one of the biggest problems we have. That’s why our country’s going haywire — we’ve lost religion in our country," he said.

Trump is selling $60 Bibles in collaboration with singer Lee Greenwood. Here's why

It's being called a case of 'mental derailment'. The US President Joe Biden said he had travelled to the collapsed Baltimore Key Bridge by train 'many times'. So what's the problem? The bridge does not have any rail lines and is only commutable by car or other vehicles.

After Biden claimed that he commuted over Francis Scott Key Bridge “many, many times … either on a train or by car", he was fact-checked by social media users.

“At about 1:30 [a.m.], a container ship struck the Francis Scott Key Bridge, which I’ve been over many, many times commuting from the state of Delaware either on a train or by car,” said Biden, in his first public remarks on the tragedy

“I’ve been to Baltimore Harbor many times,” he added. “And the bridge collapsed, sending several people and vehicles into the water — into the river," he added.

Many users on X pointed out that the bridge that collapsed into the Patapsco River on Tuesday morning (Mar 26) after being hit by a massive cargo ship never had any rail lines attached to it.

Biden, who is said to have travelled more than one million miles aboard Amtrak in 36 years, was slammed for “inserting himself” in another tragedy.

It's being called a case of 'mental derailment'. The US President Joe Biden said he had travelled to the collapsed Baltimore Key Bridge by train 'many times'. So what's the problem?

It's being called a case of 'mental derailment'. The US President Joe Biden said he had travelled to the collapsed Baltimore Key Bridge by train 'many times'. So what's the problem? The bridge does not have any rail lines and is only commutable by car or other vehicles. After Biden claimed that he commuted over Francis Scott Key Bridge “many, many times … either on a train or by car", he was fact-checked by social media users. “At about 1:30 [a.m.], a container ship struck the Francis Scott Key Bridge, which I’ve been over many, many times commuting from the state of Delaware either on a train or by car,” said Biden, in his first public remarks on the tragedy “I’ve been to Baltimore Harbor many times,” he added. “And the bridge collapsed, sending several people and vehicles into the water — into the river," he added. Biden faces backlash on social media Many users on X pointed out that the bridge that collapsed into the Patapsco River on Tuesday morning (Mar 26) after being hit by a massive cargo ship never had any rail lines attached to it. Biden, who is said to have travelled more than one million miles aboard Amtrak in 36 years, was slammed for “inserting himself” in another tragedy. “So many lies! He lies just to lie,” said one X user. “There is no value to him inserting himself into this situation," he added. India has lodged a strong demarche with the United States over the US State Department's recent comments concerning the arrest of Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal. US Acting Deputy CdA Gloria Berbena was summoned by India's Ministry of External Affairs and handed over a strongly worded demarche. The summoning lasted for 45 minutes.

India's Ministry of External Affairs (MEA), in a statement, said, "We take strong objection to the remarks of the Spokesperson of the US State Department about certain legal proceedings in India."

"In diplomacy, states are expected to be respectful of the sovereignty and internal affairs of others. This responsibility is even more so in case of fellow democracies. It could otherwise end up setting unhealthy precedents. India’s legal processes are based on an independent judiciary which is committed to objective and timely outcomes. Casting aspersions on that is unwarranted," it added.

Earlier, the US State Department, in response to an inquiry from a news agency had said, "We encourage a fair, transparent, and timely legal process for Chief Minister Kejriwal."

This marked the second instance of a foreign government commenting on Kejriwal's arrest, following earlier comments from Germany.

Over the weekend, India had responded by summoning the German Deputy Chief of Mission and lodged a strong protest.

The MEA emphasised that such remarks amounted to interference in India's judicial process and undermined the independence of its judiciary.

The government of the United States announced sanctions against Chinese hackers on Monday (Mar 25) after alleging that they were targeting the critical infrastructure of the nation while working for the government spy agency of China.

The Treasury’s Office of Foreign Assets Control said that they have issued sanctions against Wuhan Xiaoruizhi Science and Technology Company Ltd. It stated that the company has been working as a front for the Chinese Ministry of State Security that has “served as cover for multiple malicious cyber operations”.

In the unsealed indictment, the United States accused China of heading a state-backed hacking programme spanning years.

US Attorney General Merrick Garland said that the hacking operation is proof of “the ends to which the Chinese government is willing to go to target and intimidate its critics”.

The US officials said that these threats were part of the cyber hacking group APT 31, which presents an “advanced persistent threat”.

US prosecutors stated that APT 31 was part of a group managed by the Chinese Ministry of State Security, the intelligence agency of the country, based in the city of Wuhan.

The list includes state-sponsored intelligence officers and contract hackers. “APT 31 has targeted a wide range of high-ranking US government officials and their advisors integral to US national security,” said the department, in a press release.

Chinese citizens Zhao, Ni, and five other hackers were charged with conspiring to carry out computer intrusions and wire fraud by the US Department of Justice.

The agency claimed that these Chinese citizens have been involved in a 14-year-long cyber operation “targeting US and foreign critics, businesses and political officials”.

“Today’s announcements underscore the need to remain vigilant to cybersecurity threats and the potential for cyber-enabled foreign malign influence efforts, especially as we approach the 2024 election cycle,” FBI Director Christopher Wray said.

Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu on Monday (Mar 25) called off his senior aides’ trip to Washington after the United States abstained from vetoing a United Nations Security Council proposal calling for a ceasefire in war-torn Gaza.

The Israeli prime minister released a statement saying that the United States inability to veto the proposal showed a "clear retreat" from its prior stance and would harm both the combat operation against Palestinian militant group Hamas as well as the endeavour to free more than 130 hostages who were still held captive in the Gaza Strip.

"In light of the change in the American position, Prime Minister Netanyahu decided the delegation would not leave," his office said.

The United Nations Security Council (UNSC), on Monday (Mar 25) passed a resolution calling for an “immediate ceasefire” in Gaza amid the ongoing war between Israel and Hamas during the month of Ramadan and an unconditional release of all hostages held in the besieged enclave.

The UNSC adopted the resolution with 14 council members voting in favour of the measure while the United States abstained.

The text demanded an “immediate ceasefire” for the ongoing Muslim holy month of Ramadan, “leading to a permanent sustainable ceasefire.”

The White House, however, denied that the abstention reflected a diversion in American policy.

The high-level delegation was scheduled to fly to Washington to hold talks around a planned Israeli military operation in the southern Gaza city of Rafah, where reportedly over a million Palestinians are seeking refuge.

Russia has accused the US of withholding intelligence regarding the ‘involvement’ of Ukraine in the deadly terror attack in Moscow.

This came after the White House on Friday (Mar 22) said it had no initial indication that Ukraine, which is fighting an invasion by Russia, was involved in a "terrible" attack on a concert hall in Moscow.

“On what basis do officials in Washington draw any conclusions in the midst of the tragedy about anyone's involvement? If the United States has or had reliable information on this matter, it must be immediately handed over to the Russian side,” asked Maria Zakharova, a spokesperson for the Russian foreign ministry.

"And if there is no such data, then the White House has no right to issue indulgences to anyone. All those involved, according to the Russian leadership, will be identified by the competent authorities," she tweeted.

Moscow terror attack: Russia alleges US hiding 'Ukrainian involvement' in incident

The United States claimed that they had warned the Russian authorities about the possibility of a terror attack targeting "large gatherings" in Moscow, earlier this month.

The statement was given by the White House hours after at least 93 people were killed outside the Russian capital in a mass shooting.

"Earlier this month, the US government had information about a planned terrorist attack in Moscow - potentially targeting large gatherings, to include concerts" and Washington "shared this information with Russian authorities," said National Security Council spokeswoman Adrienne Watson.

Watson added that US President Joe Biden's administration had complied with a long-standing "duty to warn" policy in which the nations or groups were alerted by the United States after it received intelligence reports regarding threats to either kill or kidnap multiple victims.

In a strange coincidence, just before March 7, a warning was issued by the US Embassy informing Americans to not go to concert venues.

"The Embassy is monitoring reports that extremists have imminent plans to target large gatherings in Moscow, to include concerts, and U.S. citizens should be advised to avoid large gatherings over the next 48 hours," the alert said.

The United Nations General Assembly (UNGA) on Thursday (Mar 21) unanimously adopted the first global resolution on artificial intelligence (AI). The resolution is aimed at encouraging personal data protection, monitoring AI for risks, and safeguarding human rights.

The nonbinding resolution was proposed by the United States and co-sponsored by China and 121 other nations. The officials said that it took three months to negotiate and advocate the strengthening of privacy policies.

While briefing the reporters, one of the senior administration officials said, "We're sailing in choppy waters with the fast-changing technology, which means that it's more important than ever to steer by the light of our values."

The official described the resolution as the "first-ever truly global consensus document on AI".

Several analysts have raised concerns that without proper monitoring, the development of AI could be used to disrupt democratic processes, lead to job losses, and more. This resolution is expected to tackle such issues.

"The improper or malicious design, development, deployment and use of artificial intelligence systems ... pose risks that could ... undercut the protection, promotion and enjoyment of human rights and fundamental freedoms," the measure says.

The United States Department of Justice along with 15 states filed an antitrust lawsuit against Apple on Thursday (Mar 21) over monopolising the smartphone market.

Earlier, the competitors of the iPhone maker were sued by regulators, which include Alphabet's Google, Meta Platforms and Amazon.com across the administrations of both former president Donald Trump and President Joe Biden.

"Consumers should not have to pay higher prices because companies violate the antitrust laws," Attorney General Merrick Garland said in a statement. "If left unchallenged, Apple will only continue to strengthen its smartphone monopoly."

The Justice Department stated that Apple in terms of earnings outperforms its rival companies by charging up to $1,599 for an iPhone.

The officials additionally stated that Apple levies hidden fees on various business partners, including software developers, credit card firms, and also its competitors like Google, which eventually raises consumer costs and boosts Apple's profits.

"This lawsuit threatens who we are and the principles that set Apple products apart in fiercely competitive markets. The 88-page lawsuit, filed in a US federal court in Newark, New Jersey, said it was focused on “freeing smartphone markets from Apple’s anticompetitive and exclusionary conduct and restoring competition to lower smartphone prices for consumers, reducing fees for developers, and preserving innovation for the future.”

The Justice Department along with the District of Columbia filed the lawsuit seeking changes at Apple.

An official said, "the remedy has to be tailored to the harm that we are required to prove at trial" and suggested that break-up or reduction of the size of Apple was one of the possibilities as it was noted that "structural relief is also a form of equitable relief."

A rare and unheard disorder has been detected in a man in the United States in which the faces of other people appear distorted and demonic to him even though he has always had a sharp vision.

This rare disease was detected in the man one fine day in November 2020 when he noticed, out of the blue, that the faces of people started appearing demonic to him.

The nose, ears and mouth in everyone's face appeared stretched back and deep grooves appeared on the chins, cheeks and foreheads.

“My first thought was I woke up in a demon world. You can’t imagine how scary it was,” said 59-year-old Sharrah, of Clarksville, Tennessee, as reported by NBC News.

Sharrah's one acquaintance, who taught visually impaired people, said to him that he is likely to have been suffering from prosopometamorphopsia, or PMO.

Also Read: Are you into intermittent fasting? It's linked to chances of death due to heart attack, stroke, says study

The man felt that his symptoms matched the disease and was formally diagnosed last year.

What is PMO?

PMO is an extremely rare neurological disorder in which a person suffers in his/her perception that makes other people's faces appear distorted in size, shape, size, colour or texture.

The distortions are only seen when the person, suffering from the ailment, sees the other person in real and not in photographs or on computer screens.

The case gave scientists a chance to visualise how the warped faces appeared for someone with PMO. Dartmouth College's researchers created a digital representation of what Sharrah has been seeing. The digital representation was published in The Lancet on Thursday (Mar 21).

For creating the visual images, Sharrah was asked by the researchers to describe how the photograph of people appeared different from their real-life faces.

Then, image-editing software was used by the researchers to modify the pictures and match them with the description given by Sharrah.

In some cases, the PMO symptoms get resolved after a few weeks or days and in others, it can linger for years. Sharrah added that he continues to see demonic faces.

Till now, there are less than 100 published case reports of people suffering from PMO. According to the researchers, the dysfunction in the brain network which manages facial processing leads to the disease.

In some cases, it has also been linked to migraines, epilepsy, head trauma and stroke but others have been found to suffer PMO without any structural changes in their brains.

The study’s lead author and PhD student Antonio Mello, who works in the Social Perception Lab, at Dartmouth, said that others have also approached their lab and informed about the PMO symptoms which differ significantly from Sharrah's symptoms.

Some people "have seen face distortions since they remember, since they were a child,” said Mello. "For them at least, it’s impossible to find a single event that was responsible," he added.

Watch: Gravitas: 'Flesh-eating disease' spreading at record rate in Japan Then, image-editing software was used by the researchers to modify the pictures and match them with the description given by Sharrah. Rare disorder makes this man see 'demonic' faces. Here's what it is

In a major milestone, a team of doctors successfully transplanted a genetically-edited pig (porcine) kidney into a living patient for the very first time.

The surgeons carried out the four-hour long operation on Saturday (Mar 16) on a 62-year-old man suffering from end-stage kidney disease (ESKD), said Massachusetts General Hospital (MGH) on Thursday (Mar 21).

“The procedure marks a major milestone in the quest to provide more readily available organs to patients,” the hospital said in a statement.

The hospital said that organ shortages were an occurring issue globally and over 1,400 patients were on the waiting list seeking a kidney transplant at MGH alone.

“Our hope is that this transplant approach will offer a lifeline to millions of patients worldwide who are suffering from kidney failure,” said Dr Tatsuo Kawai, a member of the team that carried out the operation.

Elucidating on the procedure carried out by the surgeons, the hospital said that the pig kidney which was used in the transplant was genetically edited to ensure harmful pig genes were removed from the organ.

It said that certain human genes were also added to it in order to make it fit for the human body.

The hospital stated the patient, Richard Slayman of Weymouth, Massachusetts, who had undergone the transplant, was "recovering well at MGH and is expected to be discharged soon".

Slayman, who also suffered from Type 2 diabetes and hypertension previously received a kidney transplant in the year 2018.

However, five years later, the organ began to fail and he had been on dialysis since then.

Slayman said that he okayed getting the pig kidney transplanted as it would not only help him but also generate hope for "the thousands of people who need a transplant to survive”.

“This health disparity has been the target of many national policy initiatives for over 30 years, with only limited success,” said Slayman’s nephrologist, Dr Winfred Williams.

“An abundant supply of organs resulting from this technological advance may go far to finally achieve health equity and offer the best solution to kidney failure – a well-functioning kidney – to all patients in need,” Williams said.

It is pertinent to note that recently pig hearts were transplanted into two patients in the United States. However, both survived only less than two months.

It was a strange coming together. The US and Japan - the country that dropped the atomic bomb and the one that bore the brunt of that catastrophe- have moved a UN resolution against nukes in space, with eye on Russia.

US and Japan, nuclear weapon launcher and survivor, call for ban on space nukes with Russia in mind

Donald Trump failed to secure a bond that would have allowed him to appeal a $454 million judgment against him in a New York civil fraud case without depositing the entire sum, his attorneys said on Monday (Mar 18).

The former US president needs to either come up with the money or post a bond in order to keep the state's authorities from seizing his properties as he appeals Justice Arthur Engoron's judgement from Feb 16 that ordered him and co-defendants to pay $464 million in penalties and interest for misstating property values to deceive lenders and insurers.

The Republican presidential candidate's attorneys argued that the judgment's sum was excessive and asked a mid-level state appeals court to postpone its execution in a court filing on Monday.

They stated that obtaining a total appeal bail would "effectively" require "cash reserves approaching $1 billion" and that doing so was "impossible."

They added that so far the defendants had approached 30 surety companies through four separate brokers in order to obtain a bond.

"Enforcing an impossible bond requirement as a condition of appeal would inflict manifest irreparable injury on Defendants," Trump's lawyers wrote.

The lawyers urged that instead, Trump be allowed to post a $100 million bond while he appeals the judgment.

If Trump loses his appeal and it turns out that he cannot afford the money, a bonding company would be responsible for any payout.

Trump's attorneys included a declaration from Gary Giulietti, an executive of the insurance brokerage firm the Lockton Companies, which Trump has hired in order to help him obtain a bond.

Giulietti in his statement wrote that a bond for the entire $464 million "is not possible under the circumstances presented." He also pointed out that many sureties would not issue bonds above $100 million and would only accept cash or securities as collateral, and not real estate.

The judgment

The order by Judge Engoron has barred Trump and his sons from conducting business in New York: Trump for three years and his sons for two.

The former US president has also been barred from applying for loans from any New York chartered or registered financial institution during this period.

"Their complete lack of contrition and remorse borders on pathological," Engoron said of Trump and his two sons during the hearing.

Donald Trump failed to secure a bond that would have allowed him to appeal a $454 million judgment against him in a New York civil fraud case without depositing the entire sum, his attorneys said on Monday (Mar 18).

They stated that obtaining a total appeal bail would "effectively" require "cash reserves approaching $1 billion" and that doing so was "impossible." They added that so far the defendants had approached 30 surety companies through four separate brokers in order to obtain a bond. The top Republican and Democrat leaders in the U.S. Congress on Tuesday said they had reached a deal to keep the government funded through the rest of the fiscal year that began in October, setting off a race to pass it before a weekend shutdown deadline.

The last sticking point was funding for the Department of Homeland Security, as a surge in migrants at the U.S.-Mexico border has become a major issue in the election rematch between Democratic President Joe Biden and his Republican predecessor Donald Trump.

Republican House Speaker Mike Johnson and Democratic Senate Majority Leader Chuck Schumer revealed the agreement in a pair of statements on Tuesday morning.

The actual legislative text of the agreement, which must be finalised before lawmakers can vote on it, is still being completed. Current House rules require that lawmakers have three days to consider legislation before bringing it to the floor.

The package was expected to cover about three-quarters of discretionary government spending, due to come in at about $1.66 trillion for the fiscal year ending Sept. 30. It contains funding for functions including the U.S. military, transportation, housing and food safety.

But more fights lie ahead as the nation's $34.5 trillion national debt continues to grow. Biden and House Republicans earlier this month laid out proposed budgets for the next fiscal year, which begins in October, that offered sharply contrasting priorities.

Johnson so far has also refused to bring up for a vote a $95 billion foreign security aid package that includes money that advocates say is urgently needed for Ukraine in its war against Russia.

The measure has been approved by the Senate with bipartisan support and is thought to have significant backing in the House if members were given a chance to vote.

Democrats and Republicans in Congress have been fighting since early last year on funding levels amid a push by hardline House Republicans to cut more spending than had been agreed to in a bipartisan deal enacted into law last June.

A United States government research team probing a group of federal employees claiming symptoms of the "Havana syndrome" ailment that first emerged in 2016 did not find any conclusive evidence of brain injury, according to a study published in a medical journal on Monday (Mar 18).

Researchers from the National Institutes of Health (NIH) also discovered no changes in most clinical measures between a set of 86 employees and their adult family members reporting unexpected health events and a matched group of healthy volunteers who had similar work assignments.

Symptoms of the enigmatic ailment were for the very first time reported by United States embassy officials in Havana, Cuba, later affecting diplomats, spies, and other personnel across the globe.

These included hearing noise and experiencing head pressure followed by headaches, migraines, dizziness, and memory lapses.

"These individuals have symptoms that are real, distressing and very difficult to treat," Dr Leighton Chan, NIH Clinical Center acting chief scientific officer and lead study author, said according to news agency Reuters.

The participants of the study included military personnel stationed in China, Vienna, Cuba, and the United States. They undertook a battery of tests including clinical, auditory, balance, visual, neuropsychological and blood testing.

They also additionally received various types of MRI scans aimed at examining the volume, structure and function of the brain.

Researchers at the NIH did discover that over 25 per cent of patients who reported symptoms went on to acquire persistent postural-perceptual dizziness, a chronic illness. They also reported noticeably higher levels of fatigue, post-traumatic stress and depression as compared to the control group.

The results of the MRI brain imaging study "should be some reassurance for patients," said Louis French, the study's investigator and deputy director of the National Intrepid Center of Excellence at Walter Reed National Military Medical Center, as he said that the researchers did not find a correlation between odd symptoms and neurodegenerative changes.

“The post-traumatic stress and mood symptoms reported are not surprising given the ongoing concerns of many of the participants,” he said.

The US State Department on Monday (Mar 18) said that it was reviewing the NIH report and that Secretary of State Antony Blinken's primary concern with regard to what the department calls anomalous health incidents (AHI) was the health, safety and security of personnel and family members.

"The Secretary remains resolute in ensuring that the Department does everything possible to ensure employees and family members who report an AHI are treated with respect and compassion and receive timely access to medical care and all benefits to which they are entitled," a spokesperson said by email.

The Group of Seven (G7) nations on Friday (March 15) issued a statement warning Iran against transfering ballistic missiles to Russia for its offensive against Ukraine or else face new sanctions.

This could include a ban on Iran Air flights to Europe, said a senior US official on Friday (March 15).

"Were Iran to proceed with providing ballistic missiles or related technology to Russia, we are prepared to respond swiftly and in a coordinated manner including with new and significant measures against Iran," the G7 leaders said in a statement.

"We call on Iran not to do so, as it would add to regional destabilization and represent a substantive material escalation in its support for Russia's war in Ukraine," the G7 said, adding that Tehran had already provided Russia with drones that it had used against civilians.

The Joe Biden administration in the United States (US) has approved the sale of MQ9B Predator drones to India, media reports said on Friday (Mar 15). The approval signalled a major win for the Narendra Modi administration, as the deal underlined the deepening strategic partnership between India and the US, a report by News18 said. The deal sees the acquisition of 31 predator drones.

The deal was originally cleared last month but faced a delay due to objections raised by US senators. However, after the 30-day objection period, the final draft of acceptance was sent to India, the report added.
